The work system has an energy storage device (11) and a gear shift transmission (15). The traction unit has a traction motor (21). The gear shift transmission (15) provides at least two gear steps (16, 17) which have an overlap range with respect to a travel speed of the work machine (2). The traction motor (21) can be driven via energy from the work system to move the work machine (2). The method comprises: identifying (I) a gear shift situation; detecting (II) a traction power parameter of the traction unit (21); detecting (III) a system power parameter of the work system; implementing (IV) a gear shift process from one of the two gear steps (16, 17) to the other of the two gear steps (16, 17) taking into account the system power parameter, the traction power parameter and the overlap range.
