Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present invention relates to laptop computers, and in particular, to laptop computer displays. Background Art
[0002] In a dedicated workplace, computer display real estate is at a high premium. Professionals often use computers with large displays and multiple displays, often in a side-by-side arrangement, on their work desks. This enables multiple different applications to be displayed simultaneously and can increase productivity, particularly when multitasking.
[0003] Laptop computers are often used when traveling or working outside a dedicated workplace. Laptop computers are small, lightweight portable computers that generally have a clamshell housing and a compact display portion hingedly attached to a keyboard portion.
[0004] While easy to transport, laptop computers by their nature have small displays, which makes them difficult to work on efficiently and ergonomically. In most modern laptop computers, the display will take up substantially all of the upper portion of the laptop, meaning that the display size cannot be significantly increased without increasing the size of the laptop itself.
[0005] Several attempts have therefore been made to increase the size of the laptop computer display real estate by other means. In most cases, this has involved the use of a peripheral display. However, the problem with such peripheral displays is that they are bulky and not user friendly. As an illustrative example, when traveling and in crowded environments, it is generally not feasible to transport and set up a peripheral display for use next to a laptop computer.
[0006] There are some laptop computers that have multiple displays. The problem with such laptop computers is that they are generally more expensive, and are still generally limited in the amount of display space they provide.
[0007] Therefore, there is a clear need for improved laptop computer display devices.
[0008] It will be clearly understood that if a prior art publication is referred to herein, this reference does not constitute an admission that the publication forms part of the common general knowledge in the art, in Australia or any other country. Summary of the invention
[0009] The present invention is directed to a display system for a laptop computer that may at least partially overcome at least one of the above-mentioned disadvantages or provide consumers with a useful or commercial choice.

[0221] Preferred features, embodiments and variations of the present invention can be discerned from the following detailed description, which provides sufficient information for those skilled in the art to carry out the invention. The detailed description should not be construed as limiting the scope of the preceding summary of the invention in any way. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0222] Figure 1 A front view of a laptop computer display system 100 is depicted in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. Figure 2 A rear view of the display system 100 is shown, and Figure 3 A side view of the display system 100 is depicted. The terms front, back, side, etc. are used relatively herein, and the front generally refers to the front side (viewing side) of the display system 100 when in use.
[0223] The laptop computer display system 100 is configured to be releasably attached to a display of a laptop computer and includes an auxiliary display that can be used with the laptop computer. The laptop computer display system 100 thus allows a user to upgrade a laptop computer to include an auxiliary display in an easy to use and elegant manner and without requiring any permanent modification to the laptop computer.
[0224] exist Figures 1 to 3 , the auxiliary display is retracted and therefore not shown.
[0225] The laptop computer display system 100 includes a body 105 including a laptop computer display holder portion 110 configured to receive and hold a laptop computer display. The body 105 and the laptop computer display holder portion 110 formed therein are rigid, and the laptop computer display holder portion 110 includes an inner surface 110a that substantially conforms to the exterior of the laptop computer display and is thus positioned proximate to the exterior of the display when installed.
[0226] A plurality of retainer portions 115 extend inwardly from the peripheral edge of the laptop display retainer portion 110. The retainer portions 115 define small flanges that extend inwardly from the peripheral edge of the laptop display retainer portion 110 and, in use, extend over the edge of the laptop display. Thus, the laptop display retainer portion 110 can be pressed onto the laptop display so that the retainer portions engage the front of the display, thereby retaining the laptop display retainer portion 110 to the laptop computer.
[0227] The laptop display system 100 also includes a display portion 120 positioned directly behind the laptop display holder portion 110 and including an auxiliary display therein that can slide up and down between a retracted (stowed) position and an extended (display) position. The auxiliary display is described in more detail below.
[0228] Figure 4 Depicted is a side cross-sectional view of the laptop computer display system 100 through the center of the laptop computer display system 100. The secondary display has been removed for clarity.
[0229] The display portion 120 includes an auxiliary display channel 120a defined directly behind the laptop computer display holder portion 110 and configured to receive an auxiliary display. The front of the channel 120a is defined by the inner (rear) surface 110a of the display holder portion 110.
[0230] The channel 120a includes: a guide (not shown) for guiding the auxiliary display between a retracted (stowed) configuration and an extended (display) configuration; and a retainer (not shown) for retaining the auxiliary display in each of the retracted (stowed) configuration and the extended (display) configuration.
[0231] The channel 120a includes an opening 120b at its upper end through which the auxiliary display can extend. The sides and bottom of the channel 120a are closed, and the upper portion of the auxiliary display can close the opening 120b in the retracted configuration.
[0232] The guide may include a protrusion in the channel 120a to engage with a corresponding channel in the display (or its housing), or vice versa. The retainer may similarly include a protrusion that may form a flange or other retaining member to hold the display in one of its positions.
[0233] Now back to Figure 2 and Figure 3, the rear surface 105a of the body 105 of the laptop computer display system 100 is convex and smooth, and in use substantially replaces the outer housing of the laptop computer's display. This enables the laptop computer with the display system 100 installed to be used and transported in a retracted (stowed) configuration, much like without the display system 100 installed.
[0234] As explained below, other than being slightly thicker, when the secondary display is not in use, the laptop computer display system 100 does not in any other way alter the appearance or function of the laptop computer on which it is mounted, other than providing the additional functionality described herein. It should also be noted that the laptop computer display system 100 can be much thinner than depicted, and thus can minimally impact the laptop computer, but is shown in this manner for clarity.
[0235] Figure 5a A front view of the laptop computer 500 is depicted, opened without the laptop computer display system 100 installed. Figure 5b A front view of an open laptop computer 500 is depicted with the laptop computer display system 100 installed and in a retracted (stowed) state.
[0236] from Figure 5a and Figure 5b It can be seen that the front view of the laptop computer 500 is substantially unchanged with the laptop computer display system installed (when in the retracted (stowed) state).
[0237] Figure 6a A side view of a laptop computer 500 is depicted, opened without the laptop computer display system 100 installed. Figure 6b A side view of an open laptop computer 500 is depicted with the laptop computer display system 100 installed and in a retracted (stowed) state.
[0238] from Figure 6a and Figure 6b It can be seen that the side view of the laptop computer 500 when open is only minimally altered with the laptop computer display system installed, i.e., the upper portion of the laptop computer is slightly thicker when in the retracted (stowed) state.
[0239] Figure 7a A side view of a closed laptop computer 500 is depicted without the laptop computer display system 100 installed. Figure 7b A side view of a closed laptop computer 500 is depicted with the laptop computer display system 100 installed and in a retracted (stowed) state.
[0240] from Figure 7a and Figure 7b It can be seen that the side view of the laptop computer 500 when closed is only minimally altered with the laptop computer display system installed, ie, being slightly thicker when in the retracted (stowed) state.
[0241] The laptop computer 500 can be used in the same manner as if the laptop computer display system 100 was not installed. Therefore, when not in use, the laptop computer display system 100 does not cause inconvenience, so that the laptop computer display system can remain on the laptop computer even when not in use. When the auxiliary display is to be used, the auxiliary display can be slid out into place and used.
[0242] Figure 8 A front view of an open laptop computer 500 is depicted with the laptop computer display system 100 installed and in an extended (display) state. Fig. 9 A side view of an open laptop computer 500 is depicted with the laptop computer display system 100 installed and in an extended (display) state. Fig.10 A side view of the laptop computer display system 100 is depicted with the auxiliary display partially extended to illustrate the mechanism.
[0243] from Figure 8 It can be seen that the usable display area is significantly increased because the secondary display 125 is provided directly above the primary display 505 of the laptop computer 500, thereby essentially extending the primary display 505 of the laptop computer 500.
[0244] The auxiliary display 125 includes a wireless interface that couples the auxiliary display 125 to the laptop computer 500. The auxiliary display 125 also includes a battery that is configured to power the auxiliary display. Therefore, no wires are required between the auxiliary display 125 and the laptop computer 500.
[0245] In some embodiments, the secondary display 125 includes a tablet computer. In such cases, the tablet computer can be removed from the laptop computer display system 100 and used independently of the laptop computer 500.
[0246] A tablet computer (or more generally, display 125) adapted to be received in channel 120a may be provided within a housing. The housing may include protrusions or channels configured to engage with corresponding protrusions or channels in channel 120a.
[0247] Such configurations enable laptop computers and tablet computers to be off-the-shelf hardware, which enables users to purchase laptop computers and tablet computers according to their needs and potentially even at different points in time.
[0248] The tablet computer may be engaged with the housing in a manner similar to the manner in which the laptop computer display holder portion 110 engages with the laptop computer display, for example, formed to the tablet computer and including the retaining portion 115 .
[0249] By providing a display that can slide outward and upward, the existing display of the laptop computer has several benefits. First, unlike a side-by-side display, it can be used in a compact environment. In extreme cases, the laptop computer display system 100 can be used when working side by side with others without interfering with the other person's space. An example of such use is on airplanes and public transportation.
[0250] Additionally, documents, code, and other line-based content may be viewed by extending the display vertically so that a large number of lines may be displayed simultaneously in a continuous manner.
[0251] Because the secondary display is stowed behind the primary display of the laptop computer in a parallel plane, the display system can be made compact. In some embodiments, only the thickness of the upper display portion of the laptop computer is changed to facilitate stowing the secondary display 125. In some embodiments, the thickness may be increased by no more than 15 mm. In other embodiments, the thickness may be increased by no more than 5 mm.
[0252] Another advantage of embodiments of the present invention, but equally important, relates to ergonomics. Specifically, extending the display vertically elevates at least a portion of the viewing area, which has significant ergonomic benefits for users of laptop computers.
[0253] Fig.11a An exemplary configuration of a user 1100 is depicted using a laptop computer 500 without the laptop computer display system 100. The user 1100 looks down at the display, which puts stress on his neck.
[0254] Fig.11b An exemplary configuration of a user 1100 using a laptop computer 500 with a laptop computer display system 100 is depicted. The user 1100 is able to look forward at the display, which reduces the strain on his neck. A more ergonomically positioned auxiliary display 125 may even be selected as the primary workplace for the user 1100.
[0255] Although the above embodiments describe the auxiliary display as a tablet computer with its own power supply and wireless connectivity, skilled artisans will readily appreciate that the laptop display system 100 may alternatively comprise a simple display connected to the laptop computer by wires for power and signals.
[0256] The laptop display holder described above is depicted with a holder portion (lug) extending around the peripheral edge of the laptop display holder portion. In an alternative embodiment, the lower edge of the laptop display holder can be opened from below and have a single lip, lug, etc. on the upper and side edges so that the laptop display holder can be slid onto the laptop screen from above. In such a case, a simple clip / latch can be used at the bottom to prevent the holder from sliding off.
[0257] Fig.12 A front view of a laptop computer display system 1200 is depicted in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. Fig.13 A side cross-sectional view of the laptop computer display system 1200 is depicted through the center of the laptop computer display system 1200. Fig.13 Removed secondary display.
[0258] Display system 1200 is similar to display system 100 and includes a secondary display, but is releasably engaged with a laptop computer's display by sliding over the laptop computer's display from above.
[0259] Laptop computer display system 1200 includes a body 1205 including a laptop computer display holder portion 1210 configured to receive and hold a laptop computer display. Body 1205 and laptop computer display holder portion 1210 formed therein are rigid, and laptop computer display holder portion 1210 includes an inner surface 1210a that substantially conforms to the exterior of a laptop computer display, much like display system 100.
[0260] As an alternative to the holder portion 115, a lip 1215 extends around the upper and side edges of the laptop display holder portion 1210. The lip 1215 acts as a small flange that extends inwardly and, in use, extends over the upper and side edges of the laptop display. Thus, the laptop display holder portion 1210 can be slid down and over the laptop display so that the lip 1215 engages the front of the display at its top and sides, thereby retaining the laptop display holder portion 110 to the laptop.
[0261] A flexible (or pivoting) retainer 1220 (optional) is provided at the lower end of the display holder portion 1210 to releasably retain the display in the display holder portion 1210. Similarly, one or more magnetic or ferrous metal retainers 1225 (optional) are provided in the inner surface 1210a of the display holder portion 1210 to engage with magnetic or ferrous metal in the back of the laptop computer.
[0262] Laptop computer display system 1200 also includes display portion 120 as outlined above with respect to system 100 .
[0263] Display system 1200 can more evenly distribute the weight on the laptop computer display because the entire top and side surfaces of the laptop computer display are clamped, rather than just at the tabs. The slide-up installation (and similarly, slide-off removal) of system 1200 does not have any "snap-on" (or "snap-off") action, which can reduce the likelihood of the laptop computer display screen being damaged or cracked during installation, use, or removal, particularly for thinner laptop computer displays.
[0264] The display system can be made of a rigid material (much more rigid than the display system 100) because installation or removal does not require the display system to be bent or flexed. In particular, the display system can be made of very rigid plastic or even metal.
[0265] Although not explicitly described, a skilled artisan will readily appreciate that the slide-up laptop computer display retention mechanism described above may be used with other embodiments, and that different laptop computer display retention mechanisms may be interchanged.
[0266] Fig.14 A laptop computer display system 1400 is depicted installed on a laptop computer 500 according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0267] Laptop display system 1400 is similar to system 100 or 1200, but where the auxiliary display does not have its own power supply or wireless interface. In such a case, a universal serial bus (USB) cable 1205 couples the laptop 500 to the housing of the display system 1400, and then internally to the auxiliary display. Such a configuration is particularly beneficial because it enables the use of very small cables (e.g., USB-C) to power and provide signals on the auxiliary display, and the internal cables are hidden and therefore cannot get tangled up in things.
[0268] The skilled person will readily appreciate that such a configuration is also suitable for use with a tablet computer and an auxiliary display having its own power supply and / or wireless interface. In such a case, the cable can be used to charge the tablet computer, or maintain the charge in the tablet computer.
[0269] Depending on the size of the laptop computer and the laptop computer display system, as well as the viewing angle, it may be desirable to be able to adjust the angle between the laptop computer display and the secondary display.
[0270] Fig.15 A laptop computer display system 1500 is depicted installed on a laptop computer 500 according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0271] Laptop display system 1500 is similar to system 100, but wherein the secondary display can be angled relative to the laptop display. This can be accomplished using a torque hinge, a plurality of predefined support members that each support the secondary display at a different angle, or any suitable mechanism.
[0272] Auxiliary displays are generally lighter, but add additional weight to the laptop computer's display and thus the laptop computer's torque hinge. In some cases, it is necessary to provide additional support to the laptop computer's display.
[0273] The display system 1500 includes a support arm 1505 that can extend outwardly from the rear of the display system 1500 to support the display. The support arm can take a variety of forms, including a stand, a kickstand, etc. The support arm 1505 can help prevent the laptop from tipping over due to the additional weight of the auxiliary display, and can also remove stress from the hinges of the laptop and thereby prevent the hinges from wearing out or alternatively prevent the hinges from inadvertently opening.
[0274] In other embodiments, other types of locking mechanisms can be used to lock the angle of the laptop computer with the additional weight of the auxiliary display. This can include a locking member on the body 105 that engages with a locking member of a corresponding housing mounted on the keyboard portion of the laptop computer.
[0275] In some embodiments, a laptop display system is provided that operates much like an auxiliary display. One benefit of such a configuration is that the auxiliary display can be stowed or detached with the laptop. However, in these scenarios, it is desirable to include some form of laptop holder portion so that the weight of the laptop can be used to prevent the stand (and therefore the auxiliary display) from tipping over.
[0276] Fig.16A laptop computer display system 1600 is depicted for use with laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.
[0277] Laptop computer display system 1600 includes a stand 1605 including a base member 1610 from which extends an upwardly extending support member 1615. The auxiliary display 125 is supported by the support member 1615.
[0278] Compared to system 100, the auxiliary display 125 is supported by a stand 1605 directly above and behind the display of the laptop computer 500, rather than being supported by the laptop computer itself. Such a configuration is beneficial in that the display of the laptop computer 500 can be moved independently of the auxiliary display 125, and the weight of the auxiliary display 125 does not need to be supported by the laptop computer 500.
[0279] Preferably, the base member 1615 is releasably engageable with the base of, or a housing thereon, the laptop computer 500. Thus, the weight of the laptop computer 500 is used to provide stability to the stand 1605 and the auxiliary display 125 while allowing the stand 1605 to be relatively lightweight.
[0280] The auxiliary display 125 is depicted as being attached to the front side of the upwardly extending support member 1615, however, a variety of alternative configurations may be used. As an illustrative example, the auxiliary display 125 may be attached to the rear of the upwardly extending support member 1615, or even extend upwardly from the top of the upwardly extending support member 1615.
[0281] Similarly, the auxiliary display 125 can be attached to the support member 1615 in a variety of ways. As an illustrative example, the auxiliary display 125 can be slidably attached to the support member 1615 so that the auxiliary display 125 can slide up and down relative to the support member 1615. Alternatively, the auxiliary display 125 can be hingedly attached to the support member 1615, for example, so that the support member folds 1615 over the display 125 to protect the display 125. Also alternatively, the auxiliary display 125 can be releasably coupled to the upper portion of the support member 1615, for example, using a retainer and a flange.
[0282] The base member 1610 and the support member 1615 can also be attached in a variety of ways. As an illustrative example, the base member 1610 and the support member 1615 can be hingedly attached so that they can be folded together for compact storage. Similarly, the base member 1610 and the support member 1615 can be releasably coupled to each other to form the stand 1605.
[0283] The base member 1610 and the support member 1615 can be stowed together with the laptop computer 500, the auxiliary display 125, or can be stowed separately. In one embodiment, the base member 1610 and the support member 1615 can be used to provide a stowed housing for the auxiliary display 125 when not in use. In another embodiment, the base member 1610 and / or the support member 1615 can be stowed in the housing of the laptop computer 500 or the housing of the auxiliary display 125.
[0284] The base member 1610 and the support member 1615 need not extend across the entire width of the laptop computer 500. Instead, the base member 1610 and the support member 1615 may each include a pair of arms at each side of the laptop computer. Alternatively, openings may be provided in the stand 1605 to reduce weight and material.
[0285] In an alternative embodiment, at least a portion of the stand may be integral with the housing or casing of the laptop computer. Thus, the stand may support not only the auxiliary display, but also the display of the laptop computer in a fixed arrangement.
[0286] Fig.17 A laptop computer display system 1700 is depicted for use with a laptop computer in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.
[0287] The laptop computer display system includes an auxiliary display 125, which may include a tablet computer capable of operating with or independently of the laptop computer.
[0288] The first and second panel members 1705, 1710 are coupled to the auxiliary display 125, for example, through the housing of the auxiliary display 125 or through a panel that is magnetically coupled to the auxiliary display 125. The first and second panel members 1705 and 1710 are substantially the same size as the auxiliary display 125 and are configured to protect the front and back of the auxiliary display 125, respectively. Specifically, the first panel member 1705 folds up onto the front of the auxiliary display 125, and the second panel member 1710 folds down onto the back of the auxiliary display 125.
[0289] The first and second panel members 1705 , 1710 may include magnets to hold the panel members 1705 , 1710 in a closed configuration around the auxiliary display 125 .
[0290] The first and second panel members 1705, 1710 can also be locked relative to each other. Specifically, the first and second panel members 1705, 1710 can be locked at an angle of 90 degrees relative to each other (or near). Similarly, the first panel 1705 and the display 125 can be locked at an angle of about 180 degrees relative to each other, that is, so that the auxiliary display 125 is located directly above the first panel member 1705.
[0291] Such a configuration enables the secondary display to be supported above a work surface and used much like the system 1600. Specifically, the second panel member 1710 functions like the base member 1610 and the first panel member functions like the support member 1615, with the laptop supporting the second panel member 1710.
[0292] The second panel member 1710 may include a retainer (e.g., a magnet or a clip) to allow the second panel to engage with the base of the laptop computer to prevent the laptop computer display system from sliding out from under the laptop computer and tipping over. The retainer may engage directly with the base of the laptop computer or through a housing coupled to the base of the laptop computer.
[0293] Fig.18 A laptop computer display system 1800 is depicted for use with laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.
[0294] Laptop computer display system 1800 is similar to laptop computer display system 1600, but wherein support member 1815 is hingedly attached to the upper end portion of the display of the laptop computer. Such a configuration also enables stand 1805 to support the display of the laptop computer and creates a connection between stand 1805 and laptop computer 500.
[0295] The stand 1805 includes a base member 1810 from which an upwardly extending support member 1815 extends when in use. The support member 1815 is attached to the rear of the display of the laptop computer (or its housing) and lies flush with the laptop computer display when not in use. When needed, the support member 1815 folds outwardly about the upper pivot joint 1820 and is thus used to support the display of the laptop computer 500 much like a kickstand.
[0296] Additionally, the base member 1810 can engage with the housing of the laptop computer below the keyboard portion and extend outwardly from the housing to engage with the upwardly extending support member 1815. In such cases, the outer housing of the laptop computer can include a channel for receiving the base member 1810, and the base member 1810 can slide into and out of the channel.
[0297] Similarly, the base member and support member described above can be engaged with the housing of a laptop computer and stored in the housing. As an illustrative example, the base member and support member can be folded into (or otherwise engaged to create) a single substantially planar portion.
[0298] In with Fig.18 In an embodiment similar to that described in , the auxiliary display can be folded outwardly about 270 degrees from the rear of the laptop computer display about an upper pivot joint 1820 (which can include a hinge) so that the auxiliary display is above the laptop computer display. The support member 1815 can then extend outwardly therefrom.
[0299] The base member and support member outlined above may be engaged directly to one another, or may be engaged to one another using one or more fasteners (not shown). In such cases, they may be locked together at a specific angle (e.g., a right angle) or at one of a plurality of angles. Where a plurality of angles is possible, such a configuration enables the auxiliary display to be positioned at a specific angle when desired by the user.
[0300] In some embodiments, as an alternative to a kickstand-like arrangement, a locking mechanism may lock the display portion of the laptop relative to the base of the laptop to prevent the weight of the auxiliary display from exerting pressure on the hinges of the laptop. In such cases, stabilizers may extend from the base of the laptop to prevent the laptop from tipping over backwards by increasing the footprint of the laptop.
[0301] Fig.19 Laptop computer display system 1900 is depicted for use with laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. Display system 1900 is similar to system 1500.
[0302] The display system includes a base member 1905 that extends outwardly from the base of the laptop computer to stabilize the laptop computer by increasing the size (footprint) of its supporting base. The base member 1905 is substantially planar, but may include openings, etc. in other forms.
[0303] The hinges of the laptop computer 500 may not be able to support the weight of the auxiliary display 125, and therefore may tilt backward due to the weight, or otherwise be susceptible to increased wear due to the additional weight.
[0304] Therefore, a locking mechanism 1910 is provided at the hinge of the laptop computer to lock the base and display portion relative to each other, thereby reducing the weight of the hinge. The locking member 1910 can take any suitable form, and in one embodiment includes a locking member that prevents the display portion from moving relative to the base portion.
[0305] In cases where the hinges of laptop computer 500 are sufficiently strong, base member 1905 may be used without a locking mechanism.
[0306] Fig. 20 A side view of a laptop computer display system 2000 is depicted for use with a laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. Fig.21 A side view of system 2000 is depicted in a stowed / transport configuration.
[0307] The laptop computer display system 2000 includes an auxiliary display 125 which, in use, is supported by a stand portion comprising first and second panel members 2005, 2010. The first panel member 2005 extends downwardly from the second panel member 2010 which is coupled to the rear of the auxiliary display 125, thereby supporting the auxiliary display 125 in an elevated position.
[0308] The first panel member 2005 includes a magnetic coupling member 2015, which is configured to connect the upper portion of the first panel member 2005 to the upper portion of the rear of the laptop computer 500 (i.e., behind the screen of the laptop computer 500) to provide stability to the stand portion (and prevent the stand portion from tipping over).
[0309] The magnetic coupling 2015 is hingedly attached to the first panel member 2005 to enable the coupling 2015 to be connected to the laptop computer 500 opened at different angles.
[0310] The first panel member 2005 also includes a gripping member 2020 in the form of a rubber mount. The gripping member 2020 prevents the first panel member from sliding on a smooth surface, such as a table, and provides comfort to the user if the first panel member is supported directly on the user's legs.
[0311] The clamping member 2020 is depicted at the end of the first panel member 2005. However, in other embodiments, the clamping member 2020 is provided at the joint / hinge of the first panel member 2020 so that the first panel member 2005 can be folded so that the joint / hinge and therefore the clamping member 1820 abuts a support surface.
[0312] The first panel member 2005 acts as a stand for the auxiliary display 125 when used with the laptop computer 500. Fig. 20 , and acts as a protective cover for the auxiliary display 125 when in the stowed / transport configuration, such as Fig.21Specifically, the first panel member 2005 is folded to cover the front of the auxiliary display 125, and folded back to the back, where the first panel member is coupled (eg, by magnets, using hook and loop fasteners, etc.) to the second panel member 2010.
[0313] The first and second panel members 2005, 2010 may automatically become rigid and lock together when opened to 180 degrees (ie straight). This may be achieved using a magnet and slot arrangement.
[0314] The height of the first panel member 2005 may be adjustable, for example by folding or by a sliding arrangement. This enables the system to be adjusted to various height screens and screen angles.
[0315] Such a configuration is particularly convenient because it enables the auxiliary display 125, which may include a tablet computer, to be transported and used independently of the laptop computer 500, and easily converts the auxiliary display to a stand for use with the laptop computer 500. Thus, no external stand needs to be carried or used.
[0316] In contrast to several of the systems outlined above, the laptop computer 500 does not support the weight of the auxiliary display 125 in the system 1800, but rather merely provides counterbalance to the components supporting the auxiliary display 125. Therefore, the system 1800 is less likely to wear out or otherwise adversely affect the hinges or other components of the laptop computer 500.
[0317] The auxiliary display 125 can be attached to the second panel member 2010 in a variety of ways. As an illustrative example, the auxiliary display 125 can be assembled in a press-fit arrangement in a housing (shell) defined by the second panel member 2010. Alternatively, the auxiliary display 125 can be built into the second panel member 2010, or permanently (or semi-permanently) attached to the second panel member.
[0318] The secondary display 125 can be larger or smaller than the laptop computer 500. In contrast to many other systems, a larger secondary display 125 (e.g., 15" or 17") can be easily coupled to a smaller laptop computer (e.g., 13"). In such cases, the secondary display 125 (and associated panel components) will simply extend beyond the edge of the laptop computer 500.
[0319] The magnetic coupling 2015 may engage with corresponding magnets of the laptop computer 500. Alternatively, the magnetic coupling 2015 may include a ferrous metal portion configured to magnetically couple to magnets of the laptop computer.
[0320] While some laptops include magnets along their upper screen portions, in some embodiments, magnets and / or a ferrous metal strip are attached to the back of the laptop via adhesive.
[0321] The magnets may be spaced along the width of the laptop and / or holder, wherein removal of the magnetic holder may be performed by sliding the holder or a portion of the holder relative to the laptop. Such a configuration may be less likely to cause damage to the laptop when removing the system 2000.
[0322] In some embodiments, the magnet / ferrous metal strips have an interlocking pattern, such as sawtooth, diamond, square, etc., to provide slip protection in several directions when attached. The interlocking pattern prevents the magnets from slipping relative to each other (laterally), requiring the magnets to be separated in a direction opposite to the force from the magnets.
[0323] In some embodiments, the magnets in the magnetic coupling 2015 can be user-adjustable to align with the magnets of a particular laptop computer. Similarly, the magnetic coupling can be curved to conform to the specific shape of the laptop computer, and / or have hooks configured to extend over the top of the laptop computer to provide protection from sliding down.
[0324] Fig. 22 A front view of a laptop computer display system 2200 is depicted in an open configuration according to one embodiment of the present invention. Fig.23 A rear view of the system 2200 is depicted in an open configuration according to one embodiment of the present invention. Fig.24 A side view of a system 2200 for use with a laptop computer 500 is depicted in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.
[0325] The laptop computer display system 2200 includes an auxiliary display 125 which, when used with the laptop computer 500, is supported by a stand including a panel member 2205. The panel member 2205 extends downwardly from the auxiliary display 125, thereby supporting the auxiliary display 125 in an elevated position.
[0326] The display 125 includes a magnetic coupling in the form of a hinged member 2215a and a magnet 2215b that is configured to couple a lower portion of the display 125 to an upper portion behind the laptop computer 500 (i.e., behind the screen of the laptop computer 500) to provide stability to the stand (and prevent the stand from tipping over).
[0327] Hinge member 2215a is hingedly attached to display 125 to enable magnet 2215b to be connected to laptop computer 500 opened at different angles. Magnet 2215b is further slidable along track 2215c to enable magnet 2215b to be positioned at various positions along the width of track 2215c.
[0328] The panel member 2205 includes hook and loop fastening members 2220a, and the display 125 includes corresponding hook and loop fastening members 2220b. The hook and loop fastening members 2220a, 2220b enable the display 125 and the panel member 2205 to be releasably coupled so that the panel member 2205 supports the display 125 vertically.
[0329] The hook and loop fastening members 2220a, 2220b are relatively wide, so that they can engage with each other in various positions (i.e., where only portions of the hook and loop fastening members 2220a, 2220b engage with each other), thereby enabling the display 125 to be supported at various heights. In an alternative embodiment not illustrated, the user can preset the desired height of the auxiliary display for future use, for example, by adjusting the position or length of the strap 2225 and / or adjusting the position of a flange on or near the hook and loop fastening member 2220b. Adjusting the position of this flange helps the user guide or constrain the position of the hook and loop fastening members 2220a, 2220b relative to each other, thereby allowing the user to preset the height for future use.
[0330] A flexible strap 2225 couples the display 125 and the panel member 2205. The strap enables the panel member 2205 to be folded over the front of the display 125 and acts as a protective cover for the secondary display 125. Closure members 2230a, 2230b hold the system in the stowed / transport configuration and may include hook and loop fasteners, magnets, etc.
[0331] Much like system 2000, system 2200 is particularly convenient because it enables the auxiliary display 125, which may include a tablet computer, to be transported and used independently of laptop computer 500, and easily converts the auxiliary display into a stand for use with laptop computer 500. Thus, no external stand needs to be carried or used.
[0332] The display 125 is directly coupled to the panel member 2205 via a strap 2225. In the case where the display 125 is a tablet computer or a stand-alone display that includes its own protective housing, one end of the strap 2225 can be directly coupled to the back of the tablet computer or protective housing, for example, using an adhesive. In such cases, the strap 2225 and the hook and loop fastening member 2220b can be attached to simplify installation. In other embodiments, the hook and loop fastening member 2220b and the display holder to which the strap 2225 is attached can be used to hold a tablet computer or display screen.
[0333] Although not illustrated, panel member 2205 may include a clamping member similar to the clamping members described above to prevent panel member 2205 from sliding on a smooth surface.
[0334] Although system 2200 utilizes magnets to hold system 2200 to the laptop, a skilled artisan will readily appreciate that other mechanisms may be used, including complementary hook and loop fasteners, one portion of which attaches to the laptop using adhesive or even a small lip or flange that engages the upper edge of the laptop display to prevent the system from tipping over. Indeed, in some embodiments, a different retention mechanism may be used, including a combination of magnets and a lip, wherein the magnets hold the lip in place, thereby providing a more stable system in the event of a crash. In other embodiments not illustrated, the bottom of the auxiliary display may act as a lip or flange that touches the top of the laptop display to help prevent the system from tipping over.
[0335] Similarly, while hook and loop fasteners are used to couple the display 125 to the panel member 2205, a skilled artisan will readily appreciate that other mechanisms, including magnets, may be used.
[0336] Advantageously, the system 2200 is simple and cost-effective to manufacture and does not require bulky parts, such as a stand that provides balance. Additionally, because the system 2200 supports its own weight, the system does not apply stress to the hinges of the laptop computer.
[0337] Fig.25 A side view of a laptop computer display system 2500 is depicted for use with laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. System 2500 is similar to system 2000, but includes an enlarged base and is not connected to laptop computer 500.
[0338] Specifically, the first and second panel members 2505, 2510 support the auxiliary display 125 in an elevated position. Unlike the first panel member 2005, the first panel member 2505 folds to form a base portion 2510 to provide stability to the display system 2500.
[0339] The first panel member 2505 can be folded into a plurality of configurations, so that the first panel member 2505 extends upward at different heights. Such configurations are useful because the system 2500 can be used with laptop computers 500 of different sizes and screens that open to different angles.
[0340] Magnets embedded in the first panel member 2505 may be used to retain the panel member in one of the different configurations.
[0341] System 2500 folds up and collapses in a similar manner as system 2000 for stowage.
[0342] Although a relatively small and simple base 2510 is depicted, it will be readily apparent to the skilled person that other configurations may be used. In addition, although the physical connection to the laptop computer is not depicted, in other embodiments, a magnetic coupling, such as that described in system 2000, may be used.
[0343] Fig.26 A side view of a laptop computer display system 2600 is depicted for use with laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. System 2600 is similar to system 2000, but includes a base member 2605 coupled to a lower portion of first panel member 2005.
[0344] The base member 2605 includes a panel on which the laptop computer 500 is positioned in use. Such a configuration provides additional stability over the system 2000.
[0345] System 2600 folds for storage / transportation in a similar manner as system 2000 , but with base member 2605 further folded over second panel member 2010 .
[0346] The base member 2605 includes a retractable cable 2610 for connecting the laptop computer to the auxiliary display 125. The cable 2610 can be used to power or recharge the auxiliary display, and / or provide display signals to the auxiliary display. In an alternative embodiment (not illustrated), the cable can extend directly from the auxiliary display 125 to the laptop computer. When not needed, this cord can be retracted into the auxiliary display 125 or a housing associated therewith. Alternatively, the cord can be folded into a section of the first panel member 2005 or the second panel member 2010 or the auxiliary display 125.
[0347] The cable 2610 runs through the base 2605, the first panel member 2005 and the second panel member 2010 to reach the auxiliary display.
[0348] Fig. 27A side view of a display system 2700 is depicted in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. System 2700 is similar or identical to system 2000, but is reconfigured to support an auxiliary display 125 in a non-elevated position independent of a laptop computer 500.
[0349] Specifically, the first panel member 2005 is foldable such that the first and second panel members 2005, 2010 define an A-frame to support the auxiliary display at an angle.
[0350] Such a configuration is particularly useful where the auxiliary display 125 is a tablet computer, as it enables the auxiliary display to be transported in a secure manner (transport configuration), used with the laptop computer 500 (extended configuration), and used in a standalone manner (A-frame) without the need to carry any additional elements or stands.
[0351] Fig.28 Depicted is a side view of a display system 2800 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.
[0352] System 2800 is similar to system 2600, but includes a stationary stand 2805. Stationary stand 2805 includes a base from which an upwardly extending support extends.
[0353] The auxiliary display 125 is coupled to the first and second panel members 2005, 2010 received in the fixed stand 2805. The auxiliary display 125 is coupled to the first and second panel members 2005, 2010 and can be similar or identical to the system 2000, and thus, for example, in an office, the system 2800 can provide a more fixed arrangement in which the system 2000 can be used. In other words, when in the office, the system 2000 can be used with the fixed stand 2805, and when not in the office, the system 2000 can be used without the fixed stand 2805.
[0354] Although not illustrated, the system 2800 may include power connectivity for providing power to the laptop computer 500 and / or the auxiliary display 125 .
[0355] Fig.29 A side view of a display system 2900 is depicted in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. Display system 2900 is similar to display system 2800, but includes an adjustable stand 2905 and an adjustable riser 2910.
[0356] Adjustable stand 2905 is similar to stand 2805, but the height of the vertical member is adjustable. This enables stand 2905 to be adjusted according to the size of laptop computer 500 and the angle of laptop computer 500 relative to stand 2905.
[0357] The riser 2910 is configured to lift the back of the laptop to allow air to flow under the laptop 500 and to raise the screen of the laptop 500. The height of the riser 2910 is also adjustable, enabling the user to configure the angle and height of the laptop 500 according to his or her preferences.
[0358] The riser 2910 is configured to elevate the rear of the base portion of the laptop computer, thereby angle the base of the laptop computer relative to the base portion.
[0359] This type of configuration is particularly useful when an external keyboard will be used.
[0360] Fig.30 Depicted is a side view of a display system 3000 in an extended configuration, according to one embodiment of the present invention. Fig.31 Display system 3000 is depicted in a stowed / transport configuration. Display system 3000 is similar to display system 2000, but wherein support member 3005 acts as a housing for auxiliary display 125, which can slide in and out of the housing.
[0361] The height of the support member 3005 is adjustable in the extended configuration because the support member 3005 can be folded to a desired height. When folded, the lower portion of the support member 3005 becomes a horizontal base 3005a. Although depicted as folded inward (toward the laptop computer 500), the lower portion of the support member 3005 can be foldable inward, foldable outward, or foldable inward or outward.
[0362] A closure 3010 is provided at the upper end of the housing to retain the auxiliary display 125 when in the transport / stowage configuration.
[0363] The secondary display 125 may be completely removed from the housing and supported by the support member 3005 in the absence of the laptop computer 500 .
[0364] Fig.32 The display system 3000 is depicted in a configuration without the laptop computer 500. Specifically, the panel member 2010 is engaged with the magnetic coupling 2015, much like the laptop computer 500 described above.
[0365] Such a configuration is useful if the auxiliary display 125 is used separately from the laptop computer 500 or is used alongside the laptop computer, as it enables the cover to act as a stand for the auxiliary display 125 .
[0366] Fig.33Depicted is a side view of a display system 3300 in an extended configuration according to one embodiment of the present invention. Display system 3300 is similar to display system 3000, but wherein support member 3005 is pivotally attached to laptop display holder portion 3010. Support member 3005 thereby essentially acts as a kickstand.
[0367] The holder portion 3010 is similar to the holder portion 110 and is configured to receive and hold the display of the laptop computer 500. The support member 3005 is coupled to the laptop computer display holder portion 3010 by a pivot member 3015, which enables the support member to pivot relative to the laptop computer 500.
[0368] In the stowed / transport configuration, the laptop computer 500 is closed, the auxiliary display 125 is retracted into the support member 3005, and the support member 3005 is pivoted against the laptop computer, thereby enabling the laptop computer 500 and system 3300 to be placed into a conventional laptop computer bag or sleeve.
[0369] The support member 3005 and the laptop display holder portion 3010 may include magnets to lock together. In use, when the auxiliary display 125 is lifted out of the support member, the support member 3005 will break away from the back of the laptop display holder portion 3010, causing the support member 3005 to hang vertically (due to gravity). Such a configuration allows the system to be operated quickly and with one hand.
[0370] In some embodiments, the support member 3005 that receives the auxiliary display 125 has an opening at its rear. The auxiliary display 125 can be removed from the support member 3005 and reinserted rearwardly so that the screen of the auxiliary display 125 can be seen and accessed through the opening. Such a configuration enables the auxiliary display 125, which may include a tablet computer, to be used when the laptop computer is closed.
[0371] The opening may be defined in any suitable manner, including defining the opening between opposing rails, and it is advantageous to provide an opening that is as large as possible.
[0372] In some embodiments, the laptop computer can be operated when the laptop computer is closed. In such cases, the auxiliary display can include a touch screen or tablet computer that the user interacts with, thereby interacting with the computer.
[0373] Such a configuration is particularly useful on public transportation because the user can still interact with the laptop, and later (e.g., when they get home or arrive at the office), they can reverse the secondary display 125, open the laptop and use it in normal dual-screen mode.
[0374] Fig.34 A side view of a laptop computer display system 3400 is depicted for use with a laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. System 3400 is similar to system 3300, but wherein the secondary display 125 is supported by a flange 3405 of a support member 3410.
[0375] The flange 3405 includes a channel in which a lower portion of the auxiliary display 125 is received.
[0376] When in use, the flange 3405 is folded outwardly from the support member 3410 so that when retracted, the flange lies in the same plane as the support member 3410.
[0377] Thus, when not in use, the system 3400 can be attached to a laptop computer with minimal disruption, and folded outward and used when needed.
[0378] The flange 3405 may include a gripping portion for gripping the lower edge of the auxiliary display (e.g., a rubber member). Alternatively or in addition, the auxiliary display may include a portion (or its cover may include a portion) connected or otherwise engaged with the flange 3405 for stability.
[0379] Fig.35 A side view of a laptop computer display system 3500 is depicted for use with laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. System 3500 is similar to system 3400.
[0380] The flange 3505 is coupled to the laptop display holder portion 3010 by a sliding member 3510. The sliding member 3510 includes a slot through which the auxiliary display can extend to engage with the flange 3505. Thus, the sliding member 3510 not only serves to elevate the flange 3505, but also acts as a support for the auxiliary display 125, thereby preventing the auxiliary display from tilting backward or forward.
[0381] The flange 3505 folds outwardly from the sliding member 3510 and is therefore quasi-compact when not in use.
[0382] Finally, a kickstand 3515 is provided on the lower portion of the laptop computer display holder portion 3010 to support the laptop computer screen and the auxiliary display 125. Although not illustrated, the kickstand 3515 may include a gripping member (e.g., rubber) or surface at its base.
[0383] Fig.36Depicted is a side view of a laptop computer display system 3600 for use with laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.
[0384] System 3600 is similar to display system 2600 with a flange of display system 3400 .
[0385] When not in use, the system 3600 can be folded and stored in a compact (nearly flat) manner. In some embodiments, an auxiliary display can be received between the panel member 2005 and the base member 2605. In such cases, a clamping surface can be provided on its interior to assist such functions.
[0386] Fig.37 Depicted is a side view of a laptop computer display system 3700 for use with laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.
[0387] System 3700 is similar to display system 3300 , but has a laptop computer display holder portion 3705 that houses first and second auxiliary displays 3710a , 3710b that are configured to extend outwardly from each side of the laptop computer display holder portion 3705 .
[0388] Such a configuration enables four screen usage, namely, the screen from the laptop, the auxiliary screen 125 above the laptop, and the first and second auxiliary displays 3710a, 3710b on each side of the laptop.
[0389] like Fig.37 As shown in FIG. 3 , the first and second auxiliary displays 3710a, 3710b can not only slide out from the laptop display holder portion 3705, but can also be angled inward to provide a comfortable viewing experience.
[0390] The system 3700 is shown in an extended configuration, but when retracted, the first and second auxiliary displays 3710a, 3710b slide into the laptop computer display holder portion 3705, the auxiliary displays slide down into the support member 3005, and the support member 3005 folds against the laptop computer display holder portion 3705.
[0391] Fig.38A side view of a laptop computer display system 3800 for use with a laptop computer 500 is depicted in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. System 3800 is similar to a combination of system 2600 and system 3000, wherein an extendable base includes retractable members 3805a, 3805b, and a support member 3810 extends upwardly from the extendable base. The support member 3810 and the extendable base member 3805a comprise panels of a sleeve or bag that can be opened and closed about a pivot point. Closures, such as zippers, fasteners, etc. extending around three unconnected edges of the panels, are used to hold the panels in a closed configuration. The laptop computer 500 can be stored in an enclosure defined by the panels.
[0392] The panels may include padding or protective material to protect against impacts and may include handles or straps (not shown).
[0393] The extendable base includes an outer lip and end of the retractable member 3305b to prevent the laptop from sliding off the base.
[0394] Fig.39 A side view of a laptop computer display system 3900 is depicted for use with laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. System 3900 is similar to a combination of system 3700 and system 3800.
[0395] Fig.40 A side view of a laptop computer display system 4000 is depicted for use with a laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.
[0396] System 4000 is similar to system 3900, but does not have auxiliary display 125. Specifically, a simple support member 4005 is used instead of support 3810.
[0397] Fig.41 Depicted is a side view of a laptop computer display system 4100 for use with a laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.
[0398] System 4100 is similar to system 3800 , but wherein auxiliary display 125 folds downward and inward for storage / transportation. Specifically, pivot joint 4105 couples support member 4110 and panel member 2010 .
[0399] Fig.42 Depicted is a side view of a laptop computer display system 4200 for use with a laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.
[0400] System 4200 is similar to system 3800, but wherein magnetic coupling 2015 is coupled to panel member 2010, rather than support member 3810. This enables the height of magnetic coupling 2015 to be easily adjusted with auxiliary display 125, which is particularly useful when laptop computer 500 is elevated at a greater angle.
[0401] Fig.43 Depicted is a side view of a laptop computer display system 4300 for use with a laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.
[0402] System 4300 is similar to system 3800 , but wherein a mouse or trackpad support 4305 extends outwardly (laterally) from a retractable member 3805 b of the base to support a mouse 4310 for use with a laptop computer 500 .
[0403] Fig.44 Depicted is a side view of a laptop computer display system 4400 for use with a laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.
[0404] System 4400 is similar to system 3800, but wherein a non-extendable base 4405 and a keyboard 4410 are provided at the front of the base 4405. In use, the laptop computer 500 is raised at an angle by the adjustable riser 2910, thereby providing access to the keyboard 4405 at the front of the laptop computer.
[0405] The keyboard 4410 can be placed on the base 4405, supported by a flange of the base 4405, clamped to a portion of the base 4405, or received in a holder of the base 4405, the size and shape of which can be designed for the keyboard. Similarly, the keyboard 4410 can be integrated into the base 4405.
[0406] The keyboard 4410 may include a touchpad. Alternatively, a touchpad associated with the system may be provided.
[0407] Such a configuration combines the ergonomics of an elevated laptop screen with the comfort of a flat keyboard.
[0408] Fig.45 Depicted is a side view of a laptop computer display system 4500 for use with laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.
[0409] System 4500 is similar to system 4400, but wherein keyboard 4410 is extendable from the front of base 4405. Support member 3810 is coupled to base 4405 via adjustable bracket 4505, which constrains the opening level of support member 3810 relative to base 4405. The bracket can be adjusted to support support member 3810 at a desired angle, for example, using hook and loop fasteners or using retractable brackets.
[0410] This enables the support member 3810 to be opened more or less than 90 degrees (with respect to the base 4405). Thus, the stabilizer 4510 extends outward from the rear of the base 4405 to prevent the system 4500 from tipping over backwards.
[0411] Although in Fig.45 Only a single riser 2910 is depicted, but in other embodiments, multiple risers 2910 may be provided to lift the laptop computer 500 from the base 4405. In such cases, the entire base of the laptop computer 500 may be lifted from the base 4405 to provide additional airflow under the laptop computer 500, or to simply elevate the laptop computer 500.
[0412] Similarly, the riser 2910, keyboard 4410, and stabilizer 4510 are all optional features, and in other embodiments, the riser 2910, keyboard 4410, and / or stabilizer 4510 may be omitted.
[0413] Although Fig.45 The embodiment in is shown as allowing the auxiliary display 125 to slide upward from the interior of the support member 3810, but in other embodiments, the auxiliary display 125 can be folded from the interior of the support member 3810, that is, folded around a pivot point at or near the uppermost portion of the support member 3810 when opened. Similarly, a folding mechanism with height selection can be provided in a manner similar to system 2200, that is, using flexible straps, hook and loop fastening members or magnets, etc. to allow the display to rotate upward and let the user select the height of the display. However, those skilled in the art will readily appreciate that there are a variety of ways to allow the display to be moved between the transport / stowed configuration and the extended configuration, and optionally allow the user to select the height of the auxiliary display relative to the laptop computer display.
[0414] Similarly, although an adjustable bracket 4505 is depicted, in alternative embodiments, a torque hinge, locking hinge, or similar device may be used to control or maintain the opening angle of the housing.
[0415] Fig.46 Depicted is a side view of a laptop computer display system 4600 for use with laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.
[0416] System 4600 is similar to system 4500 , but wherein a foot 4605 extends downwardly from each of the corners of base 4405 .
[0417] The legs 4605 are retractable (telescopic) and / or capable of being folded into the base 4405 for storage / transportation.
[0418] The feet 4605 enable the system 4600 to be lifted, for example, when placed on a table. This enables the user to use the system while standing at the table, and retract the feet 4605 to sit down, thereby providing a simple transition between sitting and standing, which is generally considered to be beneficial to ergonomics.
[0419] Fig.47a A side view of a laptop computer display system 4700 is depicted for use with laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. Laptop computer display system 4700 is similar to system 4500, but with keyboard 4410 on base 4405 and without an auxiliary screen.
[0420] The system includes a first spacer element and a second spacer element 4705 on each side of the keyboard 4410. When the laptop computer is closed and stowed above the keyboard 4410 in the housing defined by the support member 3810 and the base 4405, the spacer elements 4705 elevate the laptop computer 500 from the keyboard.
[0421] Figure 47b A front view of a portion of the laptop computer display system 4700 is depicted with the support member 3810 removed for clarity and with the laptop computer 500 closed and stowed over the keyboard 4410. Fig.47b It can be seen that spacer elements 4705 are provided on the edges of the base 4405 and define a keyboard receiving portion therebetween. The spacer elements 4705 are slightly higher than the keyboard 4410 and therefore the laptop is supported above the keyboard in a spaced arrangement.
[0422] The spacer element 4705 further acts as a retainer configured to retain the front edge of the base of the laptop computer such that the rear of the base of the laptop computer is elevated from the base member 4405 and the display of the laptop computer is supported in a raised position by the upper member 3810.
[0423] In some embodiments, the upper member 3810 can include a flange (not shown) configured to support the back of the base of the laptop computer 500 or the display of the laptop computer 500. Such a configuration can reduce the weight on the hinges of the laptop computer 500. In some embodiments, the position of the flange can be adjustable to accommodate a wide range of laptop computer sizes and positions.
[0424] although Fig.47a The illustration in FIG. 4 shows a spacer element 4705 having a rectangular cross-section, but in other embodiments, the spacer element 4705 can taper rearwardly so that the back of the spacer element 4705 is lower than the front of the spacer element 4705. For this purpose, the spacer element 4705 can have a triangular or any other suitable cross-section. Such a configuration can be used to support a laptop computer at an angle.
[0425] In some embodiments, one or more additional spacer elements may be provided at the rear of the base 4405 to support the laptop in a horizontal position. In such cases, the additional spacer elements may also serve as storage compartments or pockets to store items such as cables. Similarly, longer spacer elements may extend from the front to the rear of the housing to enable storage of a keyboard, trackpad, and or a variety of other items.
[0426] In some embodiments, the keyboard 4410 is releasably retained on the front of the base member 4405, for example using magnets, hook and loop fasteners, etc. Such a configuration can be beneficial in preventing the keyboard 4410 from moving during transport or use.
[0427] In use, the system 4700 increases ergonomics by elevating the laptop screen and by providing an external keyboard 4410. When stowed and transported, the keyboard 4410 is protected from the laptop 500 by a spacer 4705.
[0428] exist Fig.47a 4405 and the support member 3810 to form an enclosure. However, the bracket 4405 can be inside or outside the enclosure if desired.
[0429] Fig.48 A side view of a laptop computer display system 4800 is depicted for use with laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. Laptop computer display system 4800 is similar to system 4700, but has a slide-out keyboard 4410 that slides out from the front of base 4405.
[0430] System 4800 includes a retainer 4805 configured to retain the front edge of the base of the laptop computer such that the rear of the base of the laptop computer is elevated from the base member 4405 and the display of the laptop computer is supported in an elevated position by the upper member 3810 and the foldable flange 4810.
[0431] The foldable flange 4810 not only supports the back of the base of the laptop computer 500, but also opens holes for airflow in the support member 3810. This can help prevent the laptop computer from overheating.
[0432] While many laptop computers have vents or heat sinks behind or near the base of the laptop computer, in cases where the vents or heat sinks are located elsewhere, the size and location of any openings may be moved to accommodate the location of the vents or heat sinks.
[0433] In alternative embodiments, the base may include other types of retainers for retaining the front edge of the laptop computer 500 , such as retaining grooves and / or non-slip surfaces to prevent the laptop computer 500 from sliding off the base 4405 .
[0434] Fig.49 A side view of a laptop computer display system 4900 is depicted for use with laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. Laptop computer display system 4900 is similar to systems 4700, 4800.
[0435] As with systems 4700, 4800, system 4900 includes first and second panel members 4905, 4910 that include panels of a sleeve or bag that can be opened and closed about hinges 4915. A skilled person will readily appreciate that the sleeve or bag is configured to house a laptop computer 500 for transport or storage.
[0436] Hinge 4915 enables the first (top in closed configuration) panel member 4905 to be folded 360 degrees so that the first panel member is below the second (bottom in closed configuration) panel member 4910, as shown in FIG. Fig.49 This raises the second panel member 4910 and exposes the interior of the second panel member 4910, thereby enabling the second panel member to function much like a table.
[0437] An adjustable riser 4920 is provided on the interior of a second panel member 4910 in the form of a folding panel member. The adjustable riser 4920 is attached to the back of the second panel member 4910 and is foldable so that the end of the adjustable riser 4920 engages with a retainer 4925. Different retainers 4925 are provided to enable the adjustable riser 4920 to engage with different retainers 4925, thereby providing an adjustable height. Although a specific adjustable riser is depicted, it will be readily understood by the skilled person that the adjustable riser can take many forms and fold in other ways to provide an adjustable height for the laptop to rest on. In addition, the adjustable riser can have the following dual purpose: when in a closed configuration, it can serve as a divider / partition between a laptop and items such as a keyboard, a touchpad, a mouse, accessories, etc., to help prevent items from sliding and scratching each other against the laptop. In such cases, the adjustable riser can additionally have a section for clamping / holding specific items such as a keyboard, a touchpad, a mouse, etc.
[0438] Finally, a retainer 4805 is provided at or adjacent the front of the second panel member 4910 to retain the front of the laptop computer 500. The retainer 4805 may take any suitable form and any suitable location, including being defined by the inner edge of the front of a zipper of a closed sleeve or bag.
[0439] Fig.50 A side view of a laptop computer display system 5000 is depicted for use with laptop computer 500 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. Laptop computer display system 5000 is similar to system 4900, but wherein first panel member 5005 acts as an adjustable riser.
[0440] Specifically, the system 5000 includes first and second panel members 5005, 5010 that include panels of a sleeve or bag that can be opened and closed about a hinge 4915. The first panel member 5005 folds to define first and second sub-members 5005a, 5005b.
[0441] In use, the sleeve / bag is opened and the laptop is removed from the sleeve / bag. The first panel member 5005 is folded along a predefined fold line and the front of the first panel member engages with a retainer 4925 of a plurality of retainers on the second panel member 5010. By engaging with different retainers 4925, the resulting "risers" can have different heights.
[0442] The laptop is then placed on the riser (ie, the folded first panel member 5005 ) such that the front of the laptop engages the retainer 4805 in front of or adjacent to the second panel member 4910 to retain the front of the laptop 500 .
[0443] In other embodiments, the housing / cover is used to store the keyboard and / or trackpad (or the like) instead of the laptop computer. In such cases, the housing / cover provides a convenient way to carry the keyboard and trackpad in a protective housing to avoid damaging them, while also acting as a laptop stand, thereby alleviating the need to carry a separate laptop stand. In such cases, the keyboard and / or trackpad can slide out of the housing (similar to the manner described above), or simply be stored in a recess defined by the housing and removed for use. In other embodiments, the housing / cover is used to store the laptop computer, keyboard, and trackpad / mouse. In such cases, the housing / cover has suitable recesses, dividers, and / or retainers to prevent items from sliding and also to prevent them from scratching each other.
[0444] Fig.51 Depicted is a side view of a tablet computer system 5100 for use with a secondary display 125 in the form of a tablet computer, according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0445] The auxiliary display 125 may be slidably attached to the support member 3810 so that the auxiliary display may be raised and lowered.
[0446] In an alternative embodiment, the secondary display 125 can be folded about a pivot joint, like system 4100, rather than sliding up.
[0447] The tablet computer system 5100 enables the secondary display 125 to be converted into an ergonomic laptop-like arrangement, wherein the secondary display 125 is elevated, thereby providing a more ergonomic viewing angle.
[0448] System 5100, like the other systems described above, can be modified to include an extendable mouse or keyboard support, or a balancer to prevent system 5100 from tipping over.
[0449] The auxiliary display 125 may include a tablet computer that acts as a computer with its own operating system. In other embodiments, the auxiliary display 125 may be a simple display to which a phone, tablet computer, or other computing device is coupled. In some embodiments, in the case of a tablet computing device, its touch screen may act as a numeric keypad when resting on the base 4405 or placed in front of the system 5100 while coupled to the auxiliary display 125.
[0450] Fig.52A side view of a laptop computer display system 5200 for use with laptop computer 500 is depicted in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. Laptop computer display system 5200 is similar to system 4800, but wherein the height of keyboard 4410 is adjustable.
[0451] Specifically, the keyboard 4410 slides out from the front of the base 4405 and can be extended in the vertical direction using the scissor mechanism 5205. The scissor mechanism 5205 enables the user to adjust the height of the keyboard to a desired height.
[0452] Such a configuration is particularly useful on a taller table, where the base 4405 rests on the edge of the table and the keyboard 4410 is able to extend downward below the surface of the table.
[0453] Fig.53 A side view of a laptop computer display system 5300 for use with laptop computer 500 is depicted in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. Laptop computer display system 5300 is similar to system 4800, but has first and second adjustable support members 5305,5310.
[0454] The first and second adjustable support members 5305, 5310 are slidably and hingedly attached to the support member 3810 and the base 4405. When not in use, the first adjustable support member 5305 rests flush against the support member 3810 and the second adjustable support member 5310 rests flush against the base 4405.
[0455] To enable adjustment of the angle of the laptop display system 5300 relative to a support surface such as a table, a desk, or even the user's thighs, the first adjustable support member 5305 slides downward relative to the support member 3810 and the second adjustable support member 5310 pivots downward about a pivot point at the front of the base 4405. Fig.53 Such a configuration is illustrated in .
[0456] The first and second adjustable support members 5305, 5310 can similarly be used to provide additional support to the laptop display system 5300. In such cases, the first adjustable support member 5305 can pivot outward about its upper edge (adjacent to the upper edge of the support member 3810) and the second adjustable support member 5310 can slide rearwardly parallel to the base 4405. In such cases, the adjustable support members 5305, 5310 function much like the stabilizer 4510.
[0457] In other embodiments, the adjustable support members can pivot and slide independently of each other. In certain embodiments, the adjustable support members can fold open and connect to provide a platform under the laptop computer to elevate the display system.
[0458] Although Fig.52 and Fig.53 An auxiliary display is not included, but the skilled person will readily appreciate that an auxiliary display may be incorporated into the housing as outlined above. Similarly, features such as an adjustable support and keyboard arrangement may be incorporated into the housing. Fig.52 and Fig.53 The features of may be combined with other embodiments including bags, housings or sleeves.
[0459] While some of the above embodiments include an integrated keyboard, in other embodiments a separate keyboard may be desirable, for example, for use directly on a lap or table in front of the display system.
[0460] Fig.54 A portable keyboard 5400 is depicted for use with a computing system such as a laptop or tablet computer, according to one embodiment of the present invention.
[0461] The keyboard 5400 includes a body 5405 on which a plurality of keys 5410 are centrally provided on an upper surface thereof. A touch pad is provided on the upper surface of the body, the touch pad including a touch sensor portion 5415a on one side of the body 5405 and a button portion 5415b on the opposite side of the body 5405.
[0462] Such a configuration enables the keyboard 5400 to be used comfortably on a table or thigh surface. Unlike keyboards that have a touch pad on one side and keys on the other side, the keyboard 5400 can be centered in front of the user (e.g., on the user's legs) with the keys centered. Similarly, when using a touch pad, the user's hands can be positioned on each side of the keyboard 5400 (one hand on the touch sensor portion 5415a on one side of the body 5405, and the other hand on the button portion 5415b on the other side of the body 5405), which is ergonomic and provides balance to the keyboard 5400, especially when used on the knees or thigh surfaces.
[0463] The keyboard 5400 includes an adjustable support 5420 on the underside of the body 5405 to enable adjustment of the angle and height of the keyboard 5400.
[0464] Fig.55a Draws Fig.54 5400, showing the adjustable support 5420 in a retracted configuration. In such a retracted configuration, the adjustable support 5420 abuts against the underside of the body 5405 of the keyboard 5400.
[0465] Fig.55b A side view of the keyboard 5400 is depicted, showing the adjustable support 5420 in a partially extended configuration, thereby tilting the keyboard 5400 rearwardly relative to the support surface.
[0466] Specifically, the front support legs 5420 a of the adjustable support 5420 extend downwardly from the underside of the main body 5405 , such that the support surface 5420 b of the adjustable support 5420 is angled relative to the main body 5405 .
[0467] Fig.55c A side view of the keyboard 5400 is depicted, showing the adjustable support 5420 in another partially extended configuration, thereby tilting the keyboard 5400 forward relative to the support surface.
[0468] Specifically, the rear support legs 5420 a of the adjustable support 5420 extend downwardly from the underside of the main body 5405 , such that the support surface 5420 b of the adjustable support 5420 is angled relative to the main body 5405 .
[0469] Fig.55d A side view of the keyboard 5400 is depicted, showing the adjustable support 5420 in a fully extended configuration, thereby elevating the keyboard 5400 relative to a supporting surface.
[0470] Specifically, the front and rear support legs 5420 a , 5420 b of the adjustable support 5420 extend downward from the lower side of the main body 5405 , thereby raising the support surface 5420 b of the adjustable support 5420 relative to the main body 5405 .
[0471] Although not illustrated, keyboard 5400 may include various other features, such as a soft surface and / or a gripping surface and / or a leg curve on the bottom of keyboard 5400 to conform to the user's legs.
[0472] Similarly, the keyboard 5400 may include magnets to allow easy attachment to and detachment from a bag (e.g., a laptop bag or sleeve) or attachment to and detachment from one or more of the above display systems when in use or stowed. The adjustable supports 5420 enable the user to adjust the keyboard 5400 in a variety of ways, thereby providing an ergonomic keyboard even when used on the thigh surface or other surface. This enables the keys to be directly in front of the user, with the keyboard centered in front of the user (rather than offset), which in turn helps balance on the user's thigh surface. In addition, two-handed use of the touchpad (one hand for moving on the tactile sensor and one hand for the buttons) can reduce or avoid finger fatigue.
[0473] As outlined above, certain embodiments define a housing that can accommodate a laptop computer and / or a display screen and accessories such as a keyboard and / or a mouse or trackpad. In some embodiments, a folding panel is defined on the base of such a housing to support the housing above a surface.
[0474] Fig.56 A front view of a housing 5600, such as the housings described above, is depicted having first and second legs 5615 to support the housing above a support surface. The legs 5615 include first and second panel members 5615a, 5615b defining an inverted A-frame for supporting the housing 5600.
[0475] The first and second panel members 5615a, 5615b may be foldable into a variety of configurations, for example, to provide a variety of heights. When not in use, the first and second panel members 5615a, 5615b are folded against the underside of the housing 5600.
[0476] Although the housing 5600 is shown in a closed configuration, a skilled person will readily appreciate that the housing can be supported by the first and second legs 5615 even when open, such as when a laptop computer or display is being used therein, and can thus function much like a small table.
[0477] The feet of the housing 5600 may be incorporated into the other embodiments described above. As an illustrative example, the adjustable support member 5310 may include foldable feet on its lowermost surface. This will provide additional versatility to the system 5300, as it will also optionally function as a small table.
[0478] In some embodiments, the primary and secondary displays can be viewed as a single larger display. This not only has the benefit of having a larger work area, but the laptop's camera 510 is centrally located in this display area.
[0479] Fig.57 A video conference background with Figure 1 An exemplary configuration of the display system 100 of a laptop computer 500 is shown.
[0480] It can be seen that the video conference image 5705 is split across the primary and secondary displays of the laptop computer. This positions the camera 510 centrally in the video conference image and directly adjacent to the eyes of the other user.
[0481] Such a configuration enables video conferencing to be provided in a manner that facilitates providing eye contact between users without requiring video manipulation, which has several potential problems, including those related to the interpretation of emotions and body language.
[0482] Although the camera 510 is Fig.57 In the example of , camera 510 is positioned directly below the eye, but camera 510 may be positioned directly above the eye, or at the eye.
[0483] In some embodiments, the participant's face may be automatically positioned relative to the camera 510. In such cases, software on the laptop may use facial recognition to identify the participant and automatically move the face to position the participant's eyes relative to the position of the camera.
[0484] In some embodiments, the user of the laptop can set parameters, such as how close he or she wants the eyes (or another part of the face) to be to the camera.
[0485] In other embodiments, the user may manually move the participants' faces using drag and drop or any other suitable user interface.
[0486] While the edges of the laptop computer case including the camera 510 are relatively thick, in other embodiments the display may extend substantially to the edge of the case, resulting in only a very small strip of non-display area between the primary and secondary displays.
[0487] While the above embodiments illustrate secondary displays extending vertically above a primary (laptop) display, in other embodiments, the secondary displays may extend outward from the sides of the laptop in a side-by-side arrangement. Similarly, the displays may slide out from one another in a nested arrangement in either or both horizontal and vertical directions. In one embodiment, a first display may slide out from behind a primary (laptop) display (e.g., vertically), after which one or more other displays may slide out from behind the first display (e.g., horizontally).
[0488] Similarly, while several of the above embodiments illustrate a secondary display that slides out from the housing of the display system, in other embodiments, other configurations may be used, including fold-out and flip-up arrangements.
[0489] In some embodiments, the auxiliary display is provided in a portrait mode (i.e., its longest side in the vertical direction). As mentioned above, this is particularly useful for code and documents with many lines. In some of these embodiments, the housing may have the ability to move the auxiliary display (e.g., by rotating) between landscape mode or portrait mode.
[0490] In certain embodiments, the display system may include multiple auxiliary displays, including displays that slide out in at least two different directions (eg, sideways and upward).
[0491] In some embodiments, the auxiliary display is configured to recognize when it is in the retracted configuration and automatically turns off or enters a sleep mode. Similarly, the auxiliary display can be configured to automatically turn on when it is opened.
[0492] In some embodiments described above, the keyboard is shown as sliding out of the housing. In some embodiments, a multi-directional sliding arrangement can be provided, wherein the keyboard and / or touch pad slides out of the housing and then slides left or right to allow the keyboard and / or touch pad device to be comfortably positioned.
[0493] In some embodiments, the keyboard / touchpad support may be removable from the housing to provide comfortable support for the keyboard / touchpad, for example, on the user's thigh surface. In such cases, the keyboard / touchpad may be slidable relative to the support to allow the keyboard to be comfortably positioned. The support may include flanges, tracks, slots, and / or magnets to guide and hold the keyboard / touchpad in place.
[0494] While the laptop computer and the auxiliary display may include their own batteries or power sources, in some embodiments, the housing of the display system includes a rechargeable battery for at least partially powering the auxiliary display and / or the laptop computer.
[0495] The housing of the display system may be rigid and also serve to protect the laptop computer, much like a hard shell laptop computer case.A protective hard shell housing may be provided over the keyboard portion of the laptop computer.
[0496] Because the display system can fit snugly and tightly around the laptop computer and the auxiliary display, the display system can be manufactured to fit specific models of laptop computers and displays / tablet computers. Thus, different sized display systems can be provided to fit different laptop computers, displays and / or tablet computers.
[0497] The display system may include an integrally formed main body including a laptop computer display holder and a display channel. The display system may include an integrally formed auxiliary housing for an auxiliary display engaged with the display channel. In such cases, different main bodies and auxiliary housings may be selected according to the desired laptop computer and auxiliary display combination, and the different main bodies and auxiliary housings may be engaged with each other in a modular manner (i.e., different main bodies and auxiliary housings may be engaged with each other in the same manner).
[0498] In an alternative embodiment, an auxiliary housing may be provided in which the auxiliary display is permanently or semi-permanently attached. This enables the auxiliary housing to be made independent of the display technology ultimately used.
[0499] In some embodiments, the secondary display is held in place by a gripping rubber / soft plastic cover around the edges, by magnets present within the housing and / or the secondary display, and / or by any other suitable means.
[0500] In some embodiments, the housing can be designed to be able to clamp and utilize several different models of auxiliary displays. This can be performed, for example, by using adhesives; engaging with magnets or ferrous metal already in the auxiliary display; or simply clamping the lower edge of the display. A conversion kit can be provided so that the user can attach his or her own auxiliary display.
[0501] Several embodiments described above utilize a magnet coupling mechanism. A skilled artisan will readily appreciate that any suitable combination of magnets and ferrous metals may alternatively be used, including by reversing the positions of the magnets and ferrous metal elements and / or utilizing matching magnets.
[0502] The body 105 can be integrally formed of a rigid plastic. In some embodiments, ABS plastic can be used. In other embodiments, polycarbonate can be used. Such materials are generally strong, lightweight, and impact resistant. In some embodiments, a textured fabric or other material can be applied to the rigid plastic to give the body a different look or texture.
[0503] The system may include a variety of accessories not illustrated, such as a powered fan, lights, and even side pockets, pockets, etc. As an illustrative example, a pocket may be provided to house a keyboard for use with the system.
[0504] Advantageously, the display system described herein is easily mounted on a laptop computer and can minimally change the characteristics of the laptop computer when the auxiliary display is in a retracted (storage) configuration. Thus, the display system can be semi-permanently attached to the laptop computer and used only when needed.
[0505] Because some display systems cover the back of the laptop computer's display and engage with the perimeter of the laptop computer's display, the force may be equally distributed across the entire laptop computer's display. For example, a clamping member that is attached to part of the display is more likely to damage the display and is unsightly.
[0506] The auxiliary display is easy to use, and in some embodiments can simply slide up into place, and use directly, i.e., without the need to connect any wires. Similarly, the display system can simply be pressed onto the laptop, and thus clipped onto the laptop.
[0507] Embodiments enable the secondary display to be aligned with the top of the laptop computer display, thereby providing a nearly continuous viewing area. The laptop computer's primary display can be configured to extend continuously to the secondary display, thereby providing functionality much like a larger display.
[0508] The secondary display may include a tablet computer that enables the user to select a technology that suits his or her needs. The tablet computer may be removable from the display system for use independent of the laptop computer.
[0509] Certain embodiments enable the user to tilt the auxiliary display to an angle and also lock it in place so it does not have to be precisely aligned (parallel) with the laptop display. In some embodiments, the auxiliary display can be positioned between 70 and 120 degrees relative to the horizontal plane (or laptop base). This further increases the ergonomics of the system.
