Abstract
Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONField of the invention
[0001] The present invention relates to a glove box for a vehicle, particularly to a glove box that rotates in a manner that moves the glove box toward a driver's seat when the glove box opens. Description of the related prior art
[0002] Generally, an automobile interior features a dashboard located in front of the driver. The dashboard houses gauges, control switches for operating the vehicle, an audio system, a glove box, and the like. The glove box is located on the passenger side of a vehicle and is typically used to store simple items that a driver may want to access while driving. The glove box is concealed inside the dashboard when closed and exposed when opened by the user's hand.
[0003] A conventional glove compartment, for example as in Fig. 1, comprises a body 20 with a storage space 22 therein, which is placed inside a dashboard 10 and coupled to the dashboard 10 in a pivotable manner by a hinge structure 30. The glove box is generally installed to face the front passenger seat and move in a longitudinal direction of the vehicle when closing and opening it. For this reason, the driver must lean toward the front passenger seat to retrieve something from the glove box. This causes inconvenience to the driver. Furthermore, if the driver leans toward the glove box, it is difficult for the driver to keep his or her eyes on the road, and this may lead to a traffic accident.
[0004] In addition, the conventional glove box opens by a user unlocking a locking device 24. During the unlocking operation, the body 20 of the glove box is ejected from the instrument panel 10. Since the glove box is configured to open only by the unlocking operation, it is inconvenient for a user sitting in the driver's seat to use the glove box.
[0005] Therefore, for a long time, there has been a desire for a glove box that can be used more conveniently and safely by a driver while the driver is sitting in the driver's seat.
[0006] Furthermore, DE 198 29 363 A1 describes a glove compartment with a box-shaped body that can be extended and retracted through an opening in a dashboard by means of a guide rail with a rack formed along one side of the guide rail and a drive unit driving a pinion. The guide rail has a linear section and a section curved out of the horizontal plane.
[0007] The foregoing is intended merely to assist in understanding the background of the present invention and is not intended to imply that the present invention falls within the scope of the prior art already known to those skilled in the art.
[0008] Accordingly, the present invention was made in consideration of the above-mentioned problems encountered in the prior art. The present invention provides a glove box for a vehicle that provides a driver with convenient access to the glove box without requiring the driver to lean toward the passenger's side. As such, the use of the glove box is more convenient, and the risk of traffic accidents is reduced.
[0009] The present invention provides a glove compartment for a vehicle having the features of claim 1.
[0010] According to various embodiments, the guide rail is provided with a slot-shaped groove extending in a direction in which the guide rail extends. Furthermore, a guide projection retractable into the slot-shaped groove may be formed in the opening.
[0011] According to various embodiments, the linear portion of the guide rail extends from the opening in the direction in which the box-shaped body is retractable, and the curved portion curves from one end of the linear portion in a direction toward a driver's seat. According to various embodiments, the end of the linear portion from which the curved portion extends is relatively far from the opening.
[0012] According to various embodiments, the glove box is further provided with a support rail extending from the opening to a lower portion of the box-shaped body. Furthermore, a front end of the support rail is provided at a lower portion of the box-shaped body and may be curved along the same curvature as the curved portion of the guide rail.
[0013] According to various embodiments, an upper hinge protrusion is provided at an upper end portion of the box-shaped body, and a locking bar corresponding to the upper hinge protrusion is provided in the opening. As such, the linear movement of the box-shaped body moving along the guide rail can be limited by the locking bar, and the box-shaped body can rotate about the upper hinge protrusion after the linear movement is limited.
[0014] In accordance with various embodiments, the upper hinge projection is disposed near one side of the curved portion of the guide rail.
[0015] In accordance with various embodiments, a lower hinge projection is provided at a lower end portion of the box-shaped body, and the locking bar may extend to the lower end portion of the box-shaped body to correspond to the lower hinge projection.
[0016] In accordance with various embodiments, the locking bar is provided with locking grooves which correspond respectively to the upper and lower hinge projections.
[0017] In accordance with various embodiments, the drive unit of the actuator is a motor which performs one forward rotation and one reverse rotation, and the box-shaped body is extendable from or retractable into the instrument panel in accordance with a direction of rotation of the pinion.
[0018] In accordance with various embodiments, a glove box for a vehicle having the above-described structure includes a box-shaped body dispensable or retractable through an opening formed in an instrument panel, and an actuator configured and arranged to move the box-shaped body (i.e., dispense and retract the box-shaped body).
[0019] According to various embodiments, the box-shaped body is provided with a rack configured to extend along a guide rail, and the actuator is provided with a pinion gear meshing with the rack. When a rotational force is transmitted from the actuator by means of a drive unit, the box-shaped body moves along the guide rail to be dispensed or retracted through the opening.
[0020] With this structure, the driver can use the glove box without directly opening or closing the glove box (i.e., by simply pressing the actuator to open and close it, which is in contrast to conventional locking devices that must be manipulated to open it and which further require a user to slide the glove box into the dashboard and press the locking device to close it).
[0021] Furthermore, since the guide rail provided for the box-shaped body is designed to curve in a direction toward the driver's side, the glove box is ejected while swinging in a direction toward the driver's side. Accordingly, the glove box of the present invention can be used conveniently.
[0022] As a result, the driver's comfort is increased and the risk of having a car accident is reduced.

[0031] Fig. 2 is a diagram illustrating a glove box for a vehicle in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 are graphical representations that illustrate the functioning of the Fig. 2 illustrated glove compartment, and Fig. 5 is a diagram showing a guide rail and an actuator of the type shown in Fig. 2 illustrated glove compartment. Fig. 6 is a diagram showing a lower portion of a box-shaped body of the Fig. 2 illustrated glove compartment, and Fig. 7 is a diagram illustrating the operation of the glove box in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.
[0032] As in Fig. 2-6, an embodiment of a glove box for a vehicle in accordance with the present invention includes: an opening 120 formed in an instrument panel 100; a box-shaped body 200 retracted through the opening 120 and provided with a guide rail 220 and a rack 226; the guide rail 220 includes a linear portion 222 extending in a direction along which the box-shaped body 200 is extendable and retractable, and a curved portion 224 extending and curving from one end of the linear portion 222, the rack 226 being formed along one side of the guide rail 220; and an actuator 300 having a pinion 322 meshing with the rack 226 and a drive unit 320 transmitting a rotational force to the pinion 322.
[0033] In accordance with preferred embodiments, the body 200 is box-shaped in shape and is referred to herein as a box-shaped body 200. A box-shaped structure is generally understood to be a three-dimensional shape with rectangularity. However, the structure of the present body is not limited to rectangular structures and may, for example, be rounded along the corners. In general, the body has a three-dimensional structure with a depth in which objects can be stored.
[0034] Because the glove compartment is located on the passenger side of the dashboard, it's difficult for a driver to use the glove compartment while sitting in the driver's seat. This means that since the glove compartment is far from the driver's seat, the driver must lean toward the passenger's side. This is uncomfortable for the driver and increases the likelihood of a traffic accident because the driver is distracted from looking at the road while using the glove compartment.
[0035] As in Fig. 2 and Fig. As illustrated in Fig. 7, when the glove box is opened and ejected, the glove box 200 not only moves in the longitudinal direction but also rotates in a manner that accommodates the driver's seat, thereby solving the above-mentioned problems. That is, since the glove box 200 accommodates the driver's seat, the driver can use the glove box 200 more conveniently and safely.
[0036] The structure of the glove box 200 will be described in detail below. The glove box 200 includes the box-shaped body 200, which is used for storing items therein, and the actuator 300.
[0037] The guide rail 220, which extends in the longitudinal direction, is installed on the outer surface of the box-shaped body 200. For example, as shown in Fig. 3, the guide rail 220 may be disposed along an upper outer surface of the box-shaped body 200. Alternatively, the guide rail 220 may be disposed along a lower outer surface of the box-shaped body 200 (not shown). As shown, the guide rail 220 includes the linear portion 222 and the curved portion 224 extending continuously from one end of the linear portion 222. When the box-shaped body 220 is ejected from the instrument panel 100, the guide rail 220 guides the box-shaped body 200 outward (i.e., away from the instrument panel 100) and toward the driver's seat. The box-shaped body 200 moves along the linear portion 222 of the guide rail 220 so as to be linearly discharged at an early stage of discharge from the box-shaped body 200, and thereafter moves along the curved portion 224 of the guide rail 220 so as to perform a rotational movement toward the driver's seat.
[0038] Here, the opening 120 indicates the inside of the instrument panel and is not necessarily limited to a portion of the instrument panel which is opened and closed by the extension and retraction of the box-shaped body 200.
[0039] More specifically, the linear portion 222 of the guide rail 220 extends from the opening 120 in a direction along which the box-shaped body 200 is retracted and discharged, and the curved portion 224 extends and curves from one end, at a distal end from the opening 120, of the linear portion 222 and toward the driver's seat.
[0040] That is, the box-shaped body 200 is projected sufficiently far away from the instrument panel 100 so as to be exposed to the outside (i.e., so that an internal volume thereof is exposed) after moving along the linear portion 222 of the guide rail 220, and is then rotated toward the driver's seat by moving along the linear portion 222 and then the curved portion 224 of the guide rail 220. As a result, the driver in the driver's seat can use the glove box easily, comfortably, and safely.
[0041] Preferably, as in Fig. 2, the guide rail 220 is installed at a portion of the box-shaped body 200 which is closer to the driver's seat, and more preferably, the guide rail 220 is arranged at an upper end or a lower end of the box-shaped body 200.
[0042] The effect of the present invention can be achieved regardless of the location where the guide rail 220 is provided for the box-shaped body 200. However, it is preferable that the guide rail 220 be positioned such that the distance between the center of rotation of the box-shaped body 200 and the driver's seat is small. Such a location is more preferable due to the resulting larger radius of gyration. In particular, the closer the guide rail 220 is to the driver's seat, the larger the radius of gyration around which the box-shaped body 200 can rotate toward the driver's seat.
[0043] In addition, due to the many circuits intended to perform different functions, which may be installed on both sides of the box-shaped body 200 in the instrument panel 100, and due to the structural requirements in the construction of a body of the vehicle, the locations where the guide rail 220 and additional components (such as the drive unit 320) are installed may be limited.
[0044] In the structure in which the guide rail 220 is installed closest to the driver's seat, the length of the guide rail 220 is reduced, the radius of gyration of the box-shaped body 200 is increased, and the limitation on the installation location is eliminated.
[0045] As further explained in Fig. As shown in Figures 3-5, the rack 226 is formed along one side of the guide rail 220. The actuator 300 includes the pinion 322, which meshes with the rack 226, and the drive unit 320, which transmits the rotational force to the pinion 322.
[0046] That is, since the rack 226 is formed along one side of the guide rail 220, and the drive unit 320 is connected to the pinion 322, which meshes with the rack 226, the rotational force from the drive unit 320 is transmitted as a linear force to the rack 226 via the pinion 322. This allows the rack 226 to perform a linear movement. In this way, the box-shaped body 200 slides in and out of the opening 120.
[0047] Furthermore, the guide rail 220 and the drive unit 320 have a rack and pinion structure, which generates less friction and efficiently transmits the driving force. With this structure, the box-shaped body 200 can be consistently ejected and retracted by the rotational force transmitted from the drive unit 320.
[0048] As in Fig. 3-5, a slot-shaped groove 228 is formed in the guide rail 220 in a manner that extends along the direction along which the guide rail 220 extends. A guide projection 122 (see Fig. 5) may be installed in the opening 120 to be drawn into a portion of the slot-shaped groove 228.
[0049] This structure allows the box-shaped body 200 to perform linear movement and rotational movement. The slot-shaped groove 228 is formed to extend along the direction in which the guide rail 220 extends, and the guide projection 122, which is retracted into the slot-shaped groove 228, is provided in the opening 120.
[0050] In a state where the rack 226 formed along one side of the guide rail 220 and the pinion 322 connected to the drive unit 320 mesh with each other, the box-shaped body 200 is output and retracted by the rotational force from the drive unit 320. At this time, since the guide projection 122 is retracted in the opening 120 and the slit-shaped groove 228, the box-shaped body 200 can move along the guide rail 220, and the meshing between the pinion 322 and the rack 226 can be maintained.
[0051] When the box-shaped body 200 is ejected to a predetermined extent, the movement of the box-shaped body 200 is limited by the guide projection 122 and the slot-shaped groove 228. That is, the guide projection 122 prevents the box-shaped body 200 from slipping out of the opening 120.
[0052] That is, since the guide projection 122 formed in the opening 120 is retracted and fixed in the slit-shaped groove 228, when the driving force is transmitted from the drive unit 320 to the actuator 300, the box-shaped body 200 can move steadily along the guide rail 220.
[0053] In addition, as in Fig. 6, a support rail 240 may further extend from the opening 120 in a direction in which the box-shaped body 200 is retracted and dispensed, and has an end portion provided below the box-shaped body 200. The end portion of the support rail 240 preferably has the same curvature as the curved portion 224 of the guide rail 220. A support projection 124 may be provided to be retractable in a portion of the support rail 240 that is near the opening 120.
[0054] The support rail 240 prevents the box-shaped body 200 from being decoupled from the instrument panel 100, supports the box-shaped body 200 so that the box-shaped body 200 can remain in the opening 120, and helps enable smooth movement of the box-shaped body 200.
[0055] The number of support rails 240 provided below the box-shaped body 200 is not particularly limited, and a plurality of them may be provided so that the box-shaped body 200 can be more stably supported in the opening 120 even when heavy objects are placed in the box-shaped body 200.
[0056] According to the present invention, the box-shaped body 200 is ejected by a predetermined length by moving along the linear portion 222 of the guide rail 220, and then rotated by moving along the curved portion 224 of the guide rail 220. Accordingly, by using the support rail 240 having the same curvature as the curved portion 224 of the guide rail 220, the box-shaped body 200 can move more stably along the guide rail 220 and the support rail 240.
[0057] In addition, as in Fig. 5 and Fig. 6, an upper end portion of the box-shaped body 200 may be provided with an upper hinge projection 260, and a locking bar 126 corresponding to the hinge projection 260 may be formed in the opening 120. As the box-shaped body 200 moves along the guide rail 220, it eventually abuts the locking bar 126 and thereafter rotates around the hinge projection 260. The hinge projection 260 is disposed in the vicinity of one side of the curved portion 224 of the guide rail 220.
[0058] In addition, a lower hinge protrusion 280 may be provided on the bottom of the box-shaped body 200, and the locking bar 126 may extend to the bottom of the box-shaped body 200 to correspond to the lower hinge protrusion 280.
[0059] The locking bar 126 may be provided with locking grooves 128 corresponding to the hinge projections 260 and 280 formed at the upper end portion and the lower end portion of the box-shaped body 200, respectively.
[0060] In order for the box-shaped body 200 to rotate toward the driver's seat, the upper hinge projection 260 and the lower hinge projection 280 are preferably formed on one side of the box-shaped body 200 so that the box-shaped body 200 can rotate about the hinge projections 260 and 280. Since the box-shaped body 200 rotates along the curved portion 224 of the guide rail 220, the upper hinge projection 260 is preferably installed near one side of the curved portion 224 of the guide rail 220. With this configuration, the box-shaped body 200 can rotate through the curved portion 224 of the guide rail 220 and the hinge projections 260, 280.
[0061] However, since the locking bar 126 is formed corresponding to the hinge projection in the opening 120, when the box-shaped body 200 is ejected, the hinge projection 126 abuts against the locking bar 126 after the box-shaped body 200 moves rectilinearly for a predetermined length, thus limiting the movement of the box-shaped body 200. Thereafter, the box-shaped body 200 rotates around the hinge projections 260, 280 after the rectilinear movement is limited.
[0062] It is preferable that the upper end portion of the box-shaped body 200 is provided with the upper hinge protrusion 260, and the lower end portion of the box-shaped body 200 is provided with the lower hinge protrusion 260. If only one of the upper end or the lower end of the box-shaped body 200 is provided with the hinge protrusions 260 or 280, when the rectilinear movement of the box-shaped body 200 is limited by the locking bar 126, the box-shaped body may twist upward or downward, and as a result, the smooth rotational movement cannot be achieved.
[0063] For this reason, the locking bar 126 is preferably formed to extend from the upper end to the lower end of the box-shaped body 200 to correspond to both the upper hinge projection 260 and the lower hinge projection 280. With this structure, when the box-shaped body 200 is ejected, the hinge projections 260 and 280 come into contact with the locking bar 126. Alternatively, the locking bar 126 may have a different structure. For example, instead of the structure in which the locking bar 126 extends from the upper end portion to the lower end portion of the box-shaped body 200, a plurality of locking bars 126 may be provided in a manner to respectively correspond to the hinge projections 260 and 280 in the opening 120.
[0064] The locking bar 126 may be provided with the locking grooves 128 corresponding to the hinge protrusions 260 and 280, respectively. Since the locking bar 126 is provided with the locking grooves 128 corresponding to the hinge protrusions 260 and 280, when the box-shaped body 200 is ejected and the hinge protrusions 260 and 280 come into contact with the locking bar 126, the box-shaped body 200 can rotate smoothly due to the locking grooves 128.
[0065] That is, during the ejection of the box-shaped body 200, the movement of the box-shaped body 200 is limited by the hinge protrusions 260 and 280, which respectively penetrate into the locking grooves 128. Since the rotational movement is performed in a state where the hinge protrusions 260 and 280 are received in the locking grooves 128, the box-shaped body 200 can rotate smoothly and stably.
[0066] In addition, in accordance with various embodiments, the drive unit 320 of the actuator 300 is a motor capable of forward rotation and reverse rotation, and allows the box-shaped body 200 to be output and retracted with the rotational direction of the pinion 322.
[0067] As the drive unit 320 of the actuator 300, a reversible motor capable of forward and reverse rotation is preferably used to cause the box-shaped body 200 to be dispensed and retracted in accordance with a user's operation. That is, the direction of movement of the box-shaped body 200 along the guide rail 220 is changed depending on the direction of rotation of the pinion 322 meshing with the rack 226 of the guide rail 220.
[0068] An operation switch for actuating the drive unit 320 from the actuator 300 is provided inside the vehicle, preferably at a location where the operation switch can be easily operated by a driver sitting in the driver's seat. Accordingly, with a simple manipulation of the operation switch by the driver sitting in the driver's seat, the drive unit 320 is triggered, and the box-shaped body 200 is output to rotate toward the driver's seat.
[0069] The operation switch can be located anywhere as long as the driver can operate it easily. Any conventional system can be used as a system that operates the drive unit 320.
[0070] As in Fig.As illustrated in Figure 7, the glove box of the invention moves to rotate and approach the driver's seat when it opens. Accordingly, the glove box provides increased comfort to the driver and further reduces the likelihood of accidents occurring while a driver is using the glove box. Furthermore, since the box-shaped body 200 is extended and retracted by the driving force from the drive unit 320, the driver can comfortably use the glove box without having to physically extend or retract the box-shaped body 200.
[0071] Although a preferred embodiment of the present invention has been disclosed for illustrative purposes, those skilled in the art will recognize that various changes, additions and substitutions are possible without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims.
