Description

[0001] This application claims priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2017-0169635, filed on December 11, 2017. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONField of the invention

[0002] The present invention relates to a back cover coupled to a rear surface of a display panel and to a display device incorporating the same. Discussion of the related field

[0003] In today's information-driven society, the importance of display devices as a medium for transmitting visual information is becoming increasingly important. To achieve significant positions in the future, requirements such as low power consumption, slimness, reduced weight, and high image quality must be met.

[0004] Display devices can be classified into self-emissive display devices such as a cathode ray tube (CRT) display device, an electroluminescent display device (EL) display device, a light-emitting diode (LED) display device, a vacuum fluorescent display device (VFD), a field emission display device (FED) and a plasma display panel (PDP), and non-emissive display devices such as a liquid crystal display device (LCD).

[0005] Among these various types of display devices, the liquid crystal display device, which is a device that displays an image using the optical anisotropy of liquid crystals, exhibits better visibility than the CRT display device and lower average power consumption than a CRT display device with the same screen size. For these reasons, the liquid crystal display device is attracting considerable attention.

[0006] A liquid crystal display device is a device configured to place a light source under a liquid crystal display panel, and to apply an electric field to the liquid crystals to control the arrangement of the liquid crystals, thereby adjusting the transmittance of the light emitted by the light source to realize an image. In contrast, an organic light-emitting display device is a device configured to apply current to a self-emissive fluorescent organic compound to realize an image. An organic light-emitting display device is applied to various types of electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets.

[0007] Meanwhile, curved panels have been adopted in display devices in recent years. For this purpose, a back cover is provided on the rear surface of the display panel. However, the display panel may be damaged due to thermal expansion if the display device is manufactured to meet current trends such as high image quality, slimness, and the provision of a thin front bezel.

[0008] US 2013 / 0 170 157 A1 describes a backplane for a flexible display of a flexible display terminal. The backplane has a plurality of split plates spaced apart from each other. A connecting part made of a flexible material is arranged between the split plates to deform the flexible display.

[0009] US 2016 / 0 357 052 A1 describes a foldable display device comprising a display panel and a backplate on a surface of the display panel. The backplate comprises a folding area and unfolding areas on both sides of the folding area, wherein the backplate comprises at least two opening patterns in the folding area.

[0010] JP H09-50 241 A describes an image forming apparatus comprising a rear plate on which an electron emission element is mounted, a front plate arranged to oppose the rear plate and on which an image forming element is mounted on which an image is formed by irradiation with an electron beam emitted from the electron emission element.

[0011] WO 2015 / 100404 A1 describes a flexible electronic component and a flexible support connected to the flexible electronic component. The flexible support is configured to support the flexible electronic component but also to limit the local bending of the flexible component. The flexible support defines a plurality of articulation points configured to facilitate movement of the article. The plurality of articulation points are arranged such that the article has a desired bending range. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0032] Hereinafter, exemplary embodiments of an organic light-emitting display device according to the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings so that the present invention may be easily implemented by those skilled in the art. In the drawings, the same elements are denoted by the same reference numerals even though they are shown in different drawings. In the following description of the present invention, a detailed description of well-known functions and configurations contained herein will be omitted when it may obscure the subject matter of the present invention. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that some features in the drawings may be exaggerated, reduced, or simplified for ease of description, and that the drawings and components therein are not always shown to actual scale.

[0033] In a display device 200 according to the present invention, a display panel is a flexible display panel 210 (see Fig. 9) that can be bent or curved in at least one direction. A glass substrate that can be bent to a predetermined curvature may also be used.

[0034] If a thin-film transistor array substrate is used, the display panel 210 includes a pixel array unit, an encapsulation layer, and a land unit. The pixel array unit includes a plurality of pixels with organic light-emitting devices provided in pixel regions defined by pixel drive lines including gate lines and data lines to display an image according to a signal supplied to the pixel drive lines. The encapsulation layer is provided to prevent moisture from entering each pixel. The encapsulation layer is configured to cover the pixel array unit. A gate drive circuit (not shown) is provided in the vertical non-display region of the flexible substrate to supply a gate signal (or a scanning signal) to the gate lines. The gate drive circuit is formed during the process of manufacturing a thin film transistor of each pixel to be connected to each gate line.

[0035] Furthermore, the flexible display panel 210 includes a top polarizing film attached to a top surface thereof if the display panel 210 is a flexible organic light-emitting display panel. However, the top polarizing film may be omitted to maintain the flexibility of the flexible display panel 210. A very thin metal plate may be attached to the back surface of the flexible substrate. The metal plate may be made of an Invar material.

[0036] In addition, the display device 200 may further include a touch screen (not shown) that provides an interface for user touch. The touch screen may be attached to the flexible display panel 210, or may be mounted according to an in-cell touch scheme during the process of forming the pixel array unit in the flexible display panel 210, or may be provided through a patterning process.

[0037] At least one pad unit is provided on the edge of at least one side of the flexible display panel 210, such that it is individually connected to each of the pixel drive lines provided in the pixel array unit. The pad unit is connected to a panel drive circuit unit. Preferably, the panel drive circuit unit is incorporated in a controller. The pad unit connects the panel drive circuit unit to the exterior of the display unit of the flexible display panel 210.

[0038] Fig. 1 is a plan view showing a back cover according to a first embodiment of the present invention, and Fig. 2 is a partially enlarged view showing a connecting unit of the Fig. 1 shows the back cover.

[0039] Based on Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, a back cover 100 includes a plurality of unit plates 110 and a connecting unit 120 for connecting each unit plate 110 and another unit plate adjacent thereto.

[0040] Each unit plate 110 is a thin plate made of aluminum material. The unit plates 110 are arranged at the rear surface of the display panel 210 to support the display panel 210. Furthermore, each unit plate 110 may have a heat dissipation function to absorb heat generated by the display panel 210 and dissipate the absorbed heat to the outside.

[0041] The connecting unit 120 connects the unit plates 110, which are arranged so as to be spaced apart from each other, to each other. The connecting unit 120 connects the unit plates 110 such that the display panel 210 is supported by the unit plates 110.

[0042] At least one connecting unit 120 is arranged between a first unit plate 111, which is one of the unit plates 110, and a second unit plate 112, which is another of the unit plates 110, arranged parallel to the first unit plate 111 and adjacent to the first unit plate 111 while being spaced apart from the first unit plate 111. Of course, the first unit plate 111, the second unit plate 112, and the connecting unit 120 are integrally formed by cutting a portion of the base material defined between the unit plates 110 in the vicinity of the connecting unit 120 from a single base material through a stamping process. Alternatively, the connecting unit 120 may be manufactured separately from the unit plates 110 and coupled to the unit plates 110.The connecting unit 120 may be made of a different material than the material of the unit plates 110 or may have a different structure than the structure of the unit plates 110.

[0043] As in Fig. As shown in Fig. 2, the connecting unit 120 includes a first protruding member 121 connected to the first unit plate 111, a second protruding member 122 connected to the second unit plate 112, and a first elastic member 123 for connecting the first protruding member 121 and the second protruding member 122. Here, the first protruding member 121 and the second protruding member 122 are remaining portions of the connecting unit 120, excluding the first elastic member 123 formed in a "U" shape. Each of the first protruding member 121 and the second protruding member 122 protrudes from a corresponding one of the unit plates 110 in a sectional shape approximating an "L."

[0044] The first protruding member 121 and the second protruding member 122 are arranged to oppose each other. This is because it is possible to stably transmit a force therebetween when tensile or compressive stress occurs between the first protruding member 121 and the second protruding member 122 in a horizontal direction, that is, in a first direction D1, which is the direction in which the first protruding member 121 and the second protruding member 122 oppose each other. Alternatively, the first protruding member 121 and the second protruding member 122 may be arranged so as not to oppose each other.

[0045] The first elastic member 123 is curved to one side to form a sectional shape of an "Ω" in the direction in which the first protruding member 121 and the second protruding member 122 face each other. If the strength of the stress occurring between the unit plates 110 increases, the width of the first elastic member 123 may be increased to withstand the stress.

[0046] The angle θ between the first protruding member 121 and the first elastic member 123 may be at least less than 90 degrees. This is because it is possible to withstand tensile or compressive forces more easily than when the angle θ is 90 degrees or more.

[0047] Fig. 3 is a comparative view showing another embodiment of the Fig. 2 shows the connection unit.

[0048] In Fig. 3 it can be seen that the areas of the first protruding element 121 and the second protruding element 122, which are connected to the first unit plate 111 and the second unit plate 112, respectively, are larger than in the Fig. 2 shown connection unit.

[0049] Between each protruding member and a corresponding one of the unit plates, there is a reinforcing member 125 integrally provided to withstand the stress exerted on the first protruding member 121 and the second protruding member 122 when the intensity of the stress is further increased. The reinforcing member 125 is formed by increasing the area of the portion of each protruding member that starts to protrude from a corresponding one of the unit plates. Consequently, the reinforcing member 125 can withstand higher stress. In addition, the reinforcing member 125 can prevent damage to the connecting unit due to its plastic deformation. Even in this embodiment in which the reinforcing members 125 are provided, the angle between the first protruding member 121 and the first elastic member 123 can be less than 90 degrees.

[0050] Fig. 4 is a comparative view showing another embodiment of the Fig. 2. The same reference numerals as used above refer to the same parts.

[0051] Based on Fig. 4, the connecting unit 120 includes a first protruding member 121, a second protruding member 122, and a first elastic member 1231.

[0052] The connecting unit 120 is configured such that the angle between the first protruding element 121 and the first elastic element 1231 is 90 degrees. This configuration can be applied when the stress is higher or when the width of the deformation due to thermal expansion is smaller than in the Fig. 3 shown embodiment.

[0053] If the connecting unit 120 has a sectional shape that approximates a “U”, the width thereof that absorbs tensile or compressive forces may be smaller than in the Fig. 3, while the lengths of the connections between the respective protruding elements 121 and 122 and the first elastic element 1231 can be increased, thereby increasing the width of the deformation due to thermal expansion. On the other hand, if the length of the first elastic element 1231 connected to the protruding elements 121 and 122 is minimized, the width of the deformation can be minimized. Thus, the width of the deformation can be small, while the rigidity for supporting the display panel 210 can be increased if the heat emission state does not reach a desired range.

[0054] Fig. Fig. 5 is a comparative view showing another embodiment of the connecting unit of Fig. 2 shows.

[0055] Based on Fig. 5, a connecting unit 1201 includes a first protruding member 121, a second protruding member 122, a first elastic member 1232, and a second elastic member 124.

[0056] The first protruding member 121 protrudes from the first unit plate 111 and is bent toward the second protruding member 122. The end of the first protruding member 121 is connected to the first elastic member 1232, which is curved. The first elastic member 1232 is formed in a shape approximating a "9" and is connected to the second elastic member 124, which is opposite to the first elastic member 1232. The second elastic member 124 is formed in a shape approximating a "6" and is arranged to be symmetrical to the first elastic member 1232. The second elastic member 124 is connected to the second protruding member 122, which protrudes from the second unit plate 112, to form a connecting unit 1201.

[0057] If the length of the connecting unit 1201 is increased as described above, it is possible to easily adapt to a larger increase or decrease in the gap between the first unit plate 111 and the second unit plate 112. Therefore, this embodiment can be applied to a display panel that generates high-temperature heat.

[0058] In addition, the sectional area or the sectional width of the first protruding member 121 and / or the second protruding member 122 and / or the first elastic member 1232 and / or the second elastic member 124 may be changed to adjust the width of the connecting unit 120 necessary to adapt to the thermal expansion.

[0059] Fig. 6 is a plan view of a back cover according to a second embodiment of the invention.

[0060] Based on Fig. 6, a back cover 100 according to the second embodiment of the present invention is configured such that a plurality of unit plates have different sizes.

[0061] For example, a first unit plate 111 and a second unit plate 112 located to the right of the first unit plate 111 and adjacent to the first unit plate 111 have the same size, a third unit plate 113 located below the first unit plate 111 and adjacent to the first unit plate 111 has a smaller width, and a fourth unit plate 114 connected to the bottom of the second unit plate 112 has a larger width. In other words, a first gap 115 between the first unit plate 111 and the second unit plate 112 and a second gap 116 between the third unit plate 113 and the fourth unit plate 114 are not aligned with each other. That is, the deformation of a joint unit 120 between the first unit plate 111 and the second unit plate 112 and the deformation of a joint unit 120 between the third unit plate 113 and the fourth unit plate 114 do not occur on the same line. Consequently, the angles or times at which the respective unit plates are bent differ from each other. As a result, it is possible to further improve fatigue resistance than in the first embodiment in which gaps are formed as shown in FIG. Fig. 1 are arranged so that the same number of columns and rows are realized. In addition, it is possible to increase the fatigue resistance of the display panel while more effectively adapting to the thermal expansion of the display panel if the back cover 101 is configured such that the number of spaces in which the unit plates are deformable in the horizontal direction is equal to the number of spaces in which the unit plates are deformable in the vertical direction, and that connecting units 120 are connected to some of all the unit plates adjacent to the spaces. That is, as shown in Fig. 6, the back cover may be configured such that four gaps are formed in the horizontal direction and two gaps are formed in the vertical direction to uniformly transmit tensile or compressive stress to the respective unit plates via the connecting units 120.

[0062] Fig. 7a and Fig. 7b are comparative views showing the state in which the back cover according to the embodiment of the present invention is deformed due to its thermal expansion, as compared with the prior art.

[0063] Fig. Fig. 7a shows the state in which the back cover according to the embodiment of the present invention is deformed or moved due to its thermal expansion, and Fig. Figure 7b shows the state in which a conventional back cover having a wave pattern formed in its center is deformed or moved due to its thermal expansion. Fig. 7a and Fig. 7b shows the deformation due to thermal expansion at the same temperature (about 60 °C).

[0064] Based on Fig. Figure 7a shows that the surface of the back cover has the same, uniform, or similar color, indicating that the amount of deformation or movement is small or insignificant. Furthermore, it can be seen that a height change in the z-axis direction cannot be confirmed with the naked eye. Numerically, the back cover was deformed downward by approximately 0.00079096 mm in the z-axis direction.

[0065] In Fig. Figure 7b shows that the color of opposite ends of the back cover surface is completely different from the color of the center portion of the back cover surface. Visually, it can be confirmed that the back cover has deformed significantly. Furthermore, a height change in the z-axis direction can be confirmed. Numerically, the back cover has deformed downward by 6.6824 mm in the z-axis direction.

[0066] Consequently, according to the present invention, the back cover is subjected to compression deformation as a result of an increase in the length of the display panel due to thermal expansion of the display panel, making it possible to securely support the display panel. Furthermore, the back cover is hardly deformed in the z-axis direction, making it possible to support the display panel without damaging the display panel.

[0067] Fig. 8a, Fig. 8b, Fig. 8c are comparative views showing that the rigidity of the back cover according to the embodiment of the present invention is increased depending on the number of connection units.

[0068] Fig. Figure 8a shows an example in which three connecting units are provided between a pair of unit plates, Fig. Figure 8b shows an example in which four connecting units are provided between a pair of unit plates, and Fig. 8c shows an example in which five connecting units are provided between a pair of unit plates.

[0069] The Fig. 8a, Fig. 8b and Fig. The back covers shown in Figure 8c were tested under the same condition. A first unit plate, placed on the left side, is fixed, and the end of a second plate, placed on the right side, is pulled to measure a tear length, which can be used to determine the handling efficiency of the back cover.

[0070] Fig. Figure 8a shows that the breaking length obtained by a tensile test carried out under the condition where three connecting parts are provided is 0.024635 mm, which is larger than the breaking lengths in the other cases.

[0071] Fig. Figure 8b shows that the breaking length obtained by a tensile test carried out under the condition that four connecting units are provided is 0.01802 mm. Furthermore, Fig. 8c, that the breaking length obtained by a tensile test carried out under the condition that five connecting units are provided is 0.0146 mm.

[0072] It can be seen that the tensile strength increases while the number of connecting units decreases. Since the tensile strength increases under the same tension while the number of connecting parts decreases, it is possible to easily accommodate the thermal expansion of the display panel, but the rigidity for supporting the display panel is reduced. Therefore, it is necessary to select the number of connecting units based on this, taking handling efficiency into account.

[0073] Fig. 9 is a comparative view schematically showing a display device including a back cover according to the present invention.

[0074] Based on Fig.9, a display device 200 according to the present invention includes a display panel 210, a back cover 100, and an adhesive unit 220.

[0075] As the display panel 210, a bendable OLED or LED panel may be used.

[0076] The back cover 100 is coupled to the rear surface of the display panel 210. The back cover 100 is attached to the display panel 210 via the adhesive unit 220. The adhesive unit 220 is arranged at unit plates 110 arranged at the outer edge of the back cover 100. That is, the adhesive unit 220 is attached to the back cover 100 along the edge of the rear surface of the display panel 210. This is because it is possible to prevent slippage from occurring between the display panel 210 and the back cover 100 at least at the edge thereof, even if the display panel 210 and the back cover 100 are bent in the state where the display panel 210 and the back cover 100 are coupled to each other.Furthermore, since sliding between the display panel 210 and the back cover 100 is prevented during bending of the display panel 210 and the back cover 100, it is possible to prevent an increase in the size of the front frame area. Of course, a portion of the center region of the back cover may also be attached to the display panel via the adhesive unit.

[0077] Furthermore, a heat dissipation plate 230 is provided on the rear surface of each unit plate 110 of the back cover 100. The heat dissipation plate 230 dissipates heat generated by the display panel 210, which is absorbed by the back cover 100 made of an aluminum material, to the outside, thereby achieving heat dissipation. Consequently, through heat dissipation, it is possible to reduce deformation of the back cover 100 due to its thermal expansion, thereby making it possible to increase the service life of the display panel 210.

[0078] The previously described back cover according to the first or second embodiment can be used as the back cover 100. Thus, when the overall length of the back cover 100 is increased as a result of the bending of the display panel 210, the connecting units 120 are compressed, thereby reducing the distance between the first unit plate 111 and the second unit plate 112. On the other hand, when the overall length of the back cover 100 is reduced, the connecting units 120 are stretched, thereby increasing the distance between the first unit plate 111 and the second unit plate 112.

[0079] Consequently, the back cover 100 can support the rear surface of the display panel 210 at the time of bending of the display panel 210 and prevent damage to the display panel 210 due to abnormal deformation. Furthermore, it is possible to reduce the size of a front frame to realize a slim front frame product or a front frameless product.

[0080] As is apparent from the above description, the display device according to the present invention has the following effects.

[0081] First, the connecting unit connects the unit plates together at the back surface of the scoreboard while deforming them to adapt to the thermal expansion of the scoreboard, making it possible to stably support the scoreboard.

[0082] Secondly, the total length of the back cover is elastically variable even if the display panel is bent concavely or convexly, which makes it possible to make the front frame of the display panel sufficiently slim.

[0083] Thirdly, the heat dissipation plate is also provided, which makes it possible to reduce the thermal expansion of the display panel.
