Description

TECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This document describes a method and a control arrangement. In particular, a method and a control arrangement are described for operating the electrically assisted steering of a vehicle, enabling the activation or deactivation of the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle.

[0002] In particular, the present invention relates to a method and a control arrangement for adjusting an electrically assisted steering system of a vehicle. Furthermore, the invention relates to a computer program and a computer-readable medium for causing a computer to execute such a method, as well as to an electrically assisted steering system with such a control arrangement and a vehicle with such an electrically assisted steering system. BACKGROUND

[0003] The operation of a vehicle's steering wheels can be electrically assisted by an electric power assisted steering (EPAS), sometimes referred to as electric power steering (EPS), or electrically assisted hydraulic power steering (EAS). This increases the force applied by the driver to the steering wheel. This reduces the driver's physical effort when steering the vehicle, thereby improving road safety.

[0004] It is therefore important that the EPAS / EPS / EAS system is reliable and that it always works when the vehicle is in operation.

[0005] There is therefore a need for further improvement of a vehicle’s EPAS / EPS / EAS system.

[0006] DE 10 2018 112 322 A1 discloses a power steering device configured to apply a steering assist force to a steering mechanism. The power steering device comprises an electric motor for generating the steering assist force, which can be stopped based on predetermined conditions. EP 3 006 307 B1 discloses an electric steering device for assisting a steering operation. The electric steering device stops generating a steering assist force when an electric ignition of a vehicle is deactivated and a vehicle speed is higher than a threshold value. DE 10 2013 208 864 A1 discloses a control system for a power steering system that, in the case of an automatic start-stop system of a vehicle drive engine, can deactivate the drive of the power steering system until the vehicle drive engine is restarted. DE 10 2013 018 070 A1 discloses a method for controlling stopping modes of a motor-driven power steering system. When stopping the motor-driven power steering, the method takes into account a vehicle speed which is detected by a vehicle speed sensor mounted in the vehicle. SHORT DESCRIPTION

[0007] It is therefore an object of this invention to improve the EPAS / EPS / EAS system of a vehicle.

[0008] Activating the EPAS / EPS / EAS system is unnecessary when the vehicle is stationary, for example, when parked with the engine idling, or when the vehicle is in a workshop. The EPAS / EPS / EAS system then consumes unnecessary resources.

[0009] Some of the sensors used to detect driver input to the steering wheel are based on magnetic measurements. The EPAS / EPS / EAS system is therefore sensitive to interference from magnetic fields. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the system is not disturbed by any magnetic fields near the vehicle, such as magnetic flashlights or other magnetic devices that might be used by a mechanic / driver, for example, in a workshop or when the vehicle is stationary.

[0010] The solution according to the invention is achieved by a method and by a control arrangement for adjusting an electrically assisted steering of a vehicle having the features of patent claim 1 or patent claim 8, by a computer program having the features of patent claim 11, by a computer-readable medium having the features of patent claim 12, by an electrically assisted steering system having the features of patent claim 13 and by a vehicle having the features of patent claim 14. Advantageous further developments emerge from the subclaims.

[0011] According to a first variant of the invention, the above-mentioned object is achieved by the method implemented in a vehicle control system for electrically assisted steering of the vehicle. The method includes the step of obtaining information indicating whether electrically assisted steering is required for the vehicle. The method also includes determining, based on the obtained information, whether the electrically assisted control (steering) of the vehicle should be activated or deactivated.

[0012] According to a second variant of the invention, the above is achieved by a control arrangement of a vehicle for controlling an electrically assisted steering system of the vehicle, wherein the control arrangement is configured to obtain information indicating the need for electrically assisted steering of the vehicle. The control arrangement is also configured to determine activation or deactivation of the electrically assisted steering system of the vehicle based on the obtained information.

[0013] By obtaining information regarding the need for electrically assisted steering of the vehicle, it becomes possible to determine in advance whether the driver needs / desires electrically assisted steering or not, and the vehicle's electrically assisted steering can be deactivated if no need / desire exists. If it is anticipated that the driver needs / desires electrically assisted steering, the electrically assisted steering can be activated.

[0014] One advantage of this solution is that the electrically assisted steering can be deactivated in situations where it is unnecessary, such as when the vehicle is in a workshop or in similar situations. Unwanted activation of the electrically assisted steering by a magnetic device or a technician is avoided, thus improving safety. By deactivating the electrically assisted steering when it is not needed, energy is saved. The service life of the electrically assisted steering components is also extended.

[0015] By activating the electrically assisted steering when the need / desire for its use is predicted, the proposed method is not disruptive to the driver and is even unnoticeable, preventing the electrically assisted steering from being unavailable when the driver requests or desires it. This avoids driver disruption.

[0016] This provides an improved EPAS / EPS / EAS system for the vehicle, which not only reduces costs for the vehicle owner but also improves safety.

However, these embodiments are embodied and implementable in various forms and are not limited to the examples given herein; rather, these illustrative examples are provided so that the disclosure is exhaustive and complete.

[0020] Further objects and features will become apparent from the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings. It is to be understood, however, that the drawings are for illustrative purposes only and not limiting of the embodiments provided herein; reference is made to the accompanying claims in this regard. Furthermore, the drawings are not necessarily to scale unless otherwise indicated; they are for illustrative purposes only, illustrating the basic structures and methods described herein.

[0021] Fig. 1 shows a scenario with a vehicle 100.

[0022] The vehicle 100 may comprise means of transport in the broadest sense, for example, it may be a truck, a passenger car, a motorcycle, a tractor, a bus, a bicycle, a train, a tram, an aircraft, a watercraft, etc.

[0023] The vehicle 100 has an electrically assisted steering system 200 as shown in Fig. 2 is shown.

[0024] The electrically assisted steering system 200 is configured for electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100.

[0025] Movements of the driver on the steering wheel are detected by sensors and the EPAS / EPS / EAS system 200 provides electrically assisted steering on the steering column of the vehicle 100, thereby supporting the driver's movements.

[0026] The vehicle 100 may include an actuator 210 that may be configured to adjust the direction of travel of the vehicle 100.

[0027] Furthermore, the electrically assisted steering system 200 may include an electric motor 220, ie, an electric machine configured to effect electrically assisted vehicle steering. The electric motor 220 may, for example, include an electric servo unit.

[0028] Furthermore, the electrically assisted steering system 200 may include a hydraulic transmission base 230, which in turn may be configured to act on the vehicle actuator 210, either permanently or temporarily, according to different embodiments.

[0029] The electrically assisted steering system 200 may also include one or more sensors 240 configured to determine (measure) a sensor value indicative of a vehicle condition of the vehicle 100, such as steering torque, electrical torque, angular velocity, and / or angle. The position of the sensor 240 shown in the figure is merely an arbitrary example.

[0030] The vehicle state of the vehicle 100 can be, for example, stationary, driving, parked, etc.

[0031] Sensor 240 may, for example, be configured to determine whether vehicle 100 is stationary or not and / or the steering angle / speed / acceleration of actuator 210, depending on the embodiment. Furthermore, sensor 240 may be configured to detect whether the transmission is in neutral or not.

[0032] In some embodiments, the sensor 240 may be configured to detect the steering torque of the steering wheel of the vehicle 100; the presence / absence of a human driver in the cab; the activity of the human driver, etc.

[0033] The electrically assisted steering system 200 also has a control arrangement 250 of the vehicle 100 for adjusting the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100.

[0034] The control arrangement 250 is configured to receive sensor information, signals, and / or other information regarding the requirements of an electrically assisted steering system for the vehicle 100.

[0035] Based on the information obtained, the control arrangement 250 determines whether the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 is activated or deactivated.

[0036] This makes it possible to deactivate the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 if, based on the information obtained, it is estimated that electrically assisted steering is not required or desirable, or vice versa. This allows the electrically assisted steering to be deactivated when this is appropriate or desired, for example, when the vehicle 100 is in a workshop or at a car wash, etc. On the other hand, the electrically assisted steering can also be deactivated when electrically assisted steering is not required or desired by the driver, for example, when the vehicle 100 is stationary and the driver is not moving the steering wheel. This saves energy. By deactivating the electrically assisted steering when it is not required, the service life of the components involved is extended. If the vehicle 100 has both an electrically assisted steering system and a hydraulically assisted steering system, the hydraulically assisted steering system may remain active even if the electrically assisted steering system is deactivated, depending on the embodiment.

[0037] Accordingly, the control arrangement 250 is configured to predict whether electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 is desired or will soon be desired and to (re-)activate the electrically assisted steering when needed. The control arrangement 250 can operate in such a way that this is not noticed by the driver, so that the driver is not disturbed and is also not consciously aware that, in some embodiments, the electrically assisted steering is temporarily deactivated. This avoids driver irritation due to deactivation.

[0038] In various embodiments, different criteria and / or devices may be used to determine whether or not electrically assisted steering is required. Electrically assisted steering may always be desired unless an explicit signal is given requesting deactivation of electrically assisted steering, depending on the embodiment.

[0039] In other embodiments, the electrically assisted steering system can be deactivated as soon as the vehicle 100 is stationary and the steering angular velocity of the actuator 210 is less than a threshold value with respect to the steering angular velocity. On the other hand, the electrically assisted steering system can be activated when it is detected that the vehicle 100 is moving and / or when the steering angular velocity / acceleration of the actuator 210 exceeds a threshold value with respect to the steering angular velocity / acceleration, or when the transmission is in neutral, or when a request for activation of the vehicle's electrically assisted steering system is present, or when a request for deactivation of the vehicle's electrically assisted steering system is not received.

[0040] In further embodiments, the electrically assisted steering may be deactivated when the vehicle 100 is stationary and the steering angular velocity of the actuator 210 is less than a threshold value therefor and there is no (active) driver in the vehicle 100 and / or when the vehicle 100 is in a workshop or in a similar predetermined position where electrically assisted steering is not desired, etc.

[0041] Fig. Figure 3 shows an example of components in the vehicle interior of vehicle 100 according to one embodiment. Information regarding the electrically assisted steering requirements for vehicle 100 can be determined, for example, using one or more sensors 240 of vehicle 100, a special electrically assisted steering request unit 310, a tachograph of vehicle 100, a transceiver 320 configured to receive wireless signals, etc.

[0042] The sensor 240 can be configured to determine whether the vehicle 100 is stationary. The sensor 240 can include, for example, a speedometer, an accelerometer, a position and speed sensor based on satellite-based positioning from, for example, GPS, a radar / lidar / camera measurement of the distance to one or more objects in the surrounding area, a wheel speed sensor, camera monitoring under the vehicle 100 or the surrounding area, or the like, such as monitoring based on the movement of a driver's mobile phone or location monitoring of the driver. The sensor 240 can detect that a parking brake of the vehicle 100 is activated, thereby indicating that the vehicle 100 is stationary.

[0043] In some embodiments, the sensor 240 may be configured to determine the steering angular velocity and / or acceleration of the actuator 210. The sensor 240 may include a torque sensor and a torque and angle sensor, a lateral acceleration sensor, a yaw rate sensor, a gyroscope, or the like.

[0044] In some embodiments, sensor 240 may be configured to detect that the transmission is in neutral. Such a sensor 240 may include a transmission indicator according to some embodiments or a camera that can be used to determine whether the transmission is in neutral or not.

[0045] In further embodiments, the sensor 240 can be configured to determine whether the driver of the vehicle 100 is in the driving position in the vehicle and / or driver activity can be detected. It can be assumed that the absence of the driver (or the absence of driver activity) in combination with the vehicle 100 being stationary means that no electrically assisted steering is required. The sensor 240 can, for example, have a camera directed toward the driver's seat, which can be used to determine whether the driver is in his seat or not. If the driver is in his seat, it can be detected whether the driver's eyes are open or not and / or whether the driver is holding the steering wheel or not.Other solutions for detecting driver presence / activity may include a weight sensor in the driver's seat; detection of whether the mobile phone (or a sensor / location tracker on / in the driver's body) is in the cabin; an infrared sensor for detecting the driver's body heat; detection of whether the hands are on the steering wheel; a noise detector and noise analysis software configured to detect snoring from the driver; camera / image analysis for detecting the driver's presence, etc.

[0046] This information can be combined with data from a tachograph, depending on the embodiment, in vehicles 100 with a tachograph. If the tachograph indicates a high time / period of sleep on the part of the driver, it can be concluded that electrically assisted steering is not required.

[0047] In some embodiments, the information indicating the need for electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 may include a specific request for activation / deactivation of the electrically assisted steering, for example, by means of a specially provided electrically assisted steering request unit 310 with which the driver or another person can explicitly request activation / deactivation of the electrically assisted steering.

[0048] In some embodiments, the specific request to activate / deactivate the electrically assisted steering can be received via a wireless transmission from the transceiver 320. This allows a workshop employee to deactivate / activate the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100, for example, via a smartphone app, which has ergonomic advantages for the workshop employee and provides a convenient way for them to ensure that the electrically assisted steering is deactivated.

[0049] The control arrangement 250 may include or be connected to a database 330 in which various threshold values and / or sensor comparison values may be stored.

[0050] Fig. 4 shows an example of a method 400, implemented in a control arrangement 250 of a vehicle 100, for setting an electrically assisted steering system of a vehicle 100. The method 400 relates to the provision of electrically assisted steering when requested by the driver and the deactivation of the electrically assisted steering when not requested and / or in situations where the vehicle 100 is stationary and where the electrically assisted steering may cause an accident, for example, in a workshop, etc.

[0051] To correctly adjust the electrically assisted steering, method 400 includes a number of steps 401-402. Some specific modifications of the described method steps 401-402 may be performed in only some embodiments. The described steps 401-402 may be performed in a different chronological order than that specified. Method 400 may include the following steps: Step 401 involves obtaining information indicating whether electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 is required.

[0052] The information obtained in step 401 may, in some embodiments, indicate that electrically assisted steering is not required when the vehicle 100 is stationary and a steering angular velocity of the actuator 210 is less than a steering angular velocity threshold. The steering angular velocity threshold may, for example, be set to 0.15 rad / s, 5 degrees / s, or a comparable range.

[0053] The vehicle 100 may be considered stationary when it is moving at a speed less than a vehicle speed threshold, for example, slower than 3 km / h; or when the vehicle speed is 0 km / h. In some embodiments, the vehicle 100 may be considered stationary when a parking brake of the vehicle 100 is applied.

[0054] The information obtained in step 401 may indicate that electrically assisted steering is not required when the vehicle 100 is stationary and the steering angular velocity of the actuator 210 is less than a limit threshold value with respect to the steering angular velocity and when the transmission is in neutral, depending on the embodiment.

[0055] The information obtained in step 401 may indicate that electrically assisted steering is not required if either the vehicle 100 is stationary and the steering angular velocity of the actuator 210 is less than a limit threshold for the steering angular velocity and either a specific request for deactivation of the electrical steering assistance of the vehicle 100 has been received or a specific request for activation of the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 has not been received.

[0056] In some embodiments, the information obtained in step 401 may indicate that electrically assisted steering is not required if, over a period of time corresponding to a threshold, it is confirmed that the vehicle 100 is stationary and the steering angular velocity of the actuator 210 is less than a threshold value for the steering angular velocity. The threshold value for the period of time may be a few seconds, such as selected from an interval of 1-20 seconds, such as 5 seconds or about 10 seconds, etc. (non-limiting examples). This provides the advantage of avoiding excessive deactivation of the electrically assisted steering, for example, when stopping the vehicle 100 before entering a highway, or when, in a critical / busy environment, the driver frequently stops and checks the surroundings in the rearview mirror / through the windows and / or via an image from a rear-facing camera. This avoids driver irritation.

[0057] The information obtained in step 401 may, according to some preferred embodiments, indicate that electrically assisted steering is required when the vehicle 100 is in motion or the steering angular velocity of the actuator 410 exceeds a steering angular velocity threshold.

[0058] The information obtained in step 401 may indicate that electrically assisted steering is required when either the vehicle 100 is in motion, or the steering angular velocity of the actuator 210 exceeds a steering angular velocity threshold, or when the transmission is in neutral, or when a request to activate the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 is received, or when a request to deactivate the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 is not received.

[0059] Step 402 includes determining whether to activate or deactivate the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 based on the information obtained in step 401.

[0060] In some preferred embodiments, a determination may be made in step 402 to deactivate the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 if the information obtained in step 401 indicates that the electrically assisted steering is not required.

[0061] In step 402, it may be determined to activate the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 if the information obtained in step 401 indicates that electrically assisted steering is required, depending on the embodiment.

[0062] By deactivating the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 when electrically assisted steering is not required or desired by the driver, resources can be conserved and the service life of the electrically assisted steering devices can be extended. Deactivating the electrically assisted steering when the vehicle 100 is stationary also prevents the electrically assisted steering from being activated in an undesired manner, for example, when the vehicle is in a workshop or similar environment.

[0063] Fig. 5 shows an example of a control arrangement 250 of a vehicle 100 for adjusting the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100, whereby the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 is activated or deactivated.

[0064] The control arrangement 250 can execute the method 400 according to at least some of the method steps 401-402 for determining the activation or deactivation of the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100.

[0065] The control arrangement 250 is configured to obtain information regarding the requirements for the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100. Furthermore, the control arrangement 250 is configured to determine an activation or deactivation of the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 based on the information obtained.

[0066] In some embodiments where the obtained information indicates that electrically assisted steering is not required when the vehicle 100 is stationary and the steering angular velocity of the actuator 210 is less than the steering angular velocity threshold, the control arrangement 250 may be configured to deactivate the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 by deactivating the electric motor 220, which is configured to perform electrical assistance of the steering of the vehicle 100, when the obtained information indicates that electrically assisted steering is not required. Deactivating the electric motor 220 may, for example, involve suspending any electrically generated torque, thereby precluding any auxiliary torque from acting on the vehicle actuator 210.

[0067] In some embodiments where the information obtained indicates that electrically assisted steering is required when the vehicle 100 is in motion or the steering angular velocity of the actuator 210 exceeds the steering angular velocity threshold, the control arrangement 250 may be configured to activate the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 by activating the electric motor 220 when the information obtained indicates that electrically assisted steering is required.

[0068] The control arrangement 250 may include a receiving circuit 510 configured to obtain information regarding the requirements for electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 from, for example, the sensor 140, the steering request unit 310, the tachograph of the vehicle 100, the wireless transceiver 320, and / or the database 330.

[0069] The control arrangement 250 further comprises a processor circuit 520 configured to adjust the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100, wherein it is determined whether the electrically assisted steering of the vehicle 100 is to be activated or deactivated by executing the described method 400 according to at least some of the steps 401-402.

[0070] Such a processor circuit 520 may include one or more processor components, e.g., a central processing unit (CPU), a processing unit, a processor, an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), a microprocessor, or other processor logic capable of interpreting and executing instructions. The term "processor circuit" as used herein may thus describe a processor circuit comprising multiple processor circuits, for example, one or more or all of those listed above.

[0071] Furthermore, the control arrangement 250 may comprise a memory 525 in some embodiments. The memory 525, if present, may comprise a physical device used to store data or programs, i.e., sequences of instructions, either temporarily or permanently. According to some embodiments, the memory 525 may comprise integrated circuits with silicon-based transistors. The memory 525 may, for example, comprise a memory card, a flash memory, a USB memory, a hard disk, or another volatile or non-volatile storage device for storing data, such as a ROM (read-only memory), a PROM (programmable read-only memory), an EPROM (erasable PROM), an EEPROM (electronically erasable PROM), etc., depending on the embodiment.

[0072] Furthermore, the control arrangement 250 can have a signal transmission circuit 530. The signal transmission circuit 530 can be configured to transmit control signals for activating or deactivating the electronically assisted steering of the vehicle 100.

[0073] The above-described method steps 401-402 to be executed in the control arrangement 250 can be implemented by one or more processor circuits 520 in the control arrangement 250 of the vehicle 100, in cooperation with a computer program product for executing at least some of the functions according to steps 401-402. Thus, a computer program product with instructions for executing steps 401-402 in the control arrangement 250 can execute the method 400 with at least some of the steps 401-402 for obtaining information in step 401 that indicates requirements regarding the electric steering assistance for the vehicle 100 and for determining the activation or deactivation of the electric steering of the vehicle 100 in step 402 based on the information obtained in step 401, when the computer program is loaded into the one or more processor circuits 520 of the control arrangement 250.The described steps 401-402 may thus be performed according to a computer algorithm, machine-executable code, a non-transitory computer-readable medium, or with software instructions programmed into suitable programmable logic, such as processor circuits in the control arrangement 250.

[0074] The above-mentioned computer program product may, for example, be provided in the form of a data carrier carrying the computer program code for executing at least some of the steps 401-402 according to some embodiments when the code is loaded into the one or more processor circuits of the control arrangement 250. The data carrier may, for example, be a hard disk, a CD-ROM, a memory stick, an optical storage device, a magnetic storage device, or another suitable medium, such as a disk or tape, carrying machine-readable data. The computer program product may further be provided as computer program code on a server, and it may be downloaded into the control arrangement 250, for example, via the Internet or an Internet connection.

[0075] The term "and / or" as used here includes any and all combinations of one or more of the listed quantities. The term "or," as used here, is to be understood in the sense of a mathematical OR, i.e., an inclusive operation, not in the sense of a mathematically exclusive OR (XOR), unless expressly stated otherwise.
