Description

BACKGROUND field

[0001] In computer technology, a two-rack-unit (2U) enclosure may require two one-rack-unit (1U) input / output modules (IOMs). The nominal height of the 1U enclosure may be specified as 44.45 millimeters (mm). The 1U IOM may have an external height of 41 mm. Due to the thickness of the sheet metal and clearance requirements, the internal height of the 1U IOM may be closer to 38.7 mm. In a system requiring four Open Compute Project (OCP) host bus adapters (HBAs) (with a height of 11.5 mm) per 1U IOM, additional space may be needed for function-critical features (such as ejector handles, HBA guide structures, and other connectors). These additional space considerations may necessitate stacking two HBAs to fit all four HBAs on the front panel of the 1U IOM.Such a stacked HBA and IOM layout may require specific cable connections between the motherboard and the HBAs, which can lead to problems with airflow, cable management, and assembly.

[0006] The following description is intended to enable the person skilled in the art to produce and use the aspects and examples and is given in connection with a specific application and its requirements. Various modifications of the disclosed aspects are readily apparent to the person skilled in the art, and the general principles defined herein can be applied to other aspects and applications without departing from the spirit and scope of this disclosure. Therefore, the aspects described here are not limited to those shown but have the broadest possible scope consistent with the principles and features disclosed herein.

[0007] As described above, current form factor requirements for 1U IOMs and HBAs may necessitate stacking HBAs to overcome the technical challenge of fitting stacked OCP HBAs into a 2U form factor chassis. Based on the dimensions described above, a system requiring four OCP HBAs per 1U IOM, for example, might require stacking two pairs of HBAs to fit all four HBAs into the form factor of a single 1U IOM. The layout of the stacked HBAs within a 1U IOM may require specific cable connections between the motherboard and the HBAs. The cables used in such connections may interfere with or obstruct airflow to the HBAs, and the location and tolerance of the connectors to the HBAs may be critical for ensuring a reliable interface between the HBAs and the connectors.

[0008] The disclosed aspects provide a system that enables both a reliable interface between the HBAs and the connectors and ensures airflow through the HBAs. The system can include a mounting assembly with a bracket and a pair of rails, allowing two HBAs to be installed in a stacked format by using the same reference plane to attach the bracket to the rail pair. The bracket can have features (e.g., openings) that can align with elements (e.g., tabs and notches) on the rails to facilitate connection of the bracket to the rails. The bracket can be a cable holder, and the rails can be guide rails for inserting the HBAs. The bracket can be attached to or connected to mounted cable assemblies via connecting elements (as shown below in relation to the Fig. (described) and can also be attached to the rails by placement, insertion and sliding movements (as described below in relation to the Fig. (described).

[0009] The bracket can comprise a first part and a second part, as shown below in relation to the Fig. described. The bracket may have cable connection openings in the first part through which cable assemblies can be inserted, as described below. Fig. described. The bracket may also have openings on each side or segment of the first section. The rails may include alignment features for mounting, including tabs and notches located at the ends of the rails. The tabs and notches may be positioned or placed in alignment with the openings on each side or segment of the first section of the bracket, as described below. Fig. described. In addition, the rails may have posts with connecting receptacles (e.g., threaded holes) that are recessed on the top of the posts and that allow connecting components (e.g., screws) to attach the bracket to the rails from the second part of the bracket, as described below in relation to the Fig. described.

[0010] With the described aspects, the bracket can be placed against the tabs at the ends of the rails and pushed downwards to rest in the notches behind the tabs. The openings on the bracket and the tabs on the rails can be aligned so that the movement of placing and pushing the bracket down results in the bracket locking into a fixed position with the rails, as shown below in relation to the Fig. described. In another aspect, a bracket may include a tray (such as a cable tray) that projects from one side of the bracket, with the tray being able to support a set of mounted cables, as described below. Fig. DESCRIBED. The tray may protrude from the rear of the bracket and ensure that the supported set of mounted cables does not obstruct the path of airflow over the components in or associated with the bracket assembly, including the HBAs.

[0011] In another aspect, the bracket or mounting assembly can be housed or installed in an enclosure into which multiple HBAs can be inserted. The side of the enclosure into which the HBAs are inserted can be referred to as the "front" of the enclosure, while the opposite side of the front can be referred to as the "back" of the enclosure. Thus, the "front" of all components inside the enclosure can be considered the side closest to or facing the front of the enclosure, while the "back" of all components inside the enclosure can be considered the side closest to or facing the back of the enclosure (i.e., facing away from the front of the enclosure). The term “rear isometric view” can refer to a perspective taken from the rear of the chassis or component, while the term “front isometric view” can refer to a perspective taken from the front of the chassis or component. A component for the purposes of this disclosure may include, but is not limited to: a bracket, including its various sections, segments, areas, regions, and parts; a cable set; a rail; and an HBA.

[0012] The terms “cable set”, “cable assembly”, “cable assembly set”, “assembled cables”, “cable set” and “assembled cable set” are used interchangeably in this disclosure and refer to a cable set which may include multiple cables enclosed by different sheaths and connected at one end with terminal openings.

[0013] The terms “assemble”, “attach”, “fasten”, and “place” are used interchangeably in this disclosure and refer to placing two components next to each other in such a way that they touch in at least one area. The terms “fix” and “lock” refer to two components that not only touch but require movement (e.g., releasing a fastener or moving a component in a certain direction) so that the two components are separated and do not touch in any area.

[0014] The terms “rail” and “guide rail” are used synonymously in this disclosure and refer to a flat bar or series of bars designed to guide a component such as an HBA into a position that allows the HBA to be properly attached to a cable set.

[0015] Fig. shows a bracket 100 in an isometric rear view according to one aspect of the present application. Fig. The bracket 100 is viewed from a rear side 180 of the bracket 100. The bracket 100 can comprise a first section 110 (e.g., a flat piece that can be placed or positioned vertically in a chassis) containing a first segment 112 with a first opening 114, a second segment 122 with a second opening 124, and a third segment 170. The first segment 112 can also include a first cable connection opening 116 and a second cable connection opening 118, arranged in opposite directions to the first opening 114 (e.g., above and below the first opening 114 if the first section 110 is in a vertical position with respect to the floor). Similarly, the second segment 122 can include a third cable connection opening 126 and a fourth cable connection opening 128, arranged in opposite directions to the second opening 124 (e.g.,above and below the second opening 124, when the first section 110 is positioned in a vertical position relative to the ground).

[0016] The bracket 100 can also include a third opening 150, into which a first cable set is or can be inserted, and a fourth opening 152, into which a second cable set is or can be inserted. The term "opening" generally refers to a space, area, or gap and may or may not be surrounded or defined by a continuous edge. For example, the third opening 150 is surrounded by a continuous edge, while the fourth opening 152 is not. An object can be inserted or placed through an opening.

[0017] The second section 130 can be connected to the first section 110 at a perpendicular angle: in a first area 136, which adjoins the first segment 112 of the first section 110 and a fourth segment 132 of the second section 130; and in a second area 146, which adjoins the second segment 122 of the first section 110 and a fifth segment 142 of the second section 130.

[0018] The first section 110 can also include a central area 120. The first opening 114, the second opening 124, and the third segment 170 can be located or arranged within the central area 120 of the first section 110. The third segment 170 can include a plurality of openings 162, 164, 166, and 168. While the openings 162-168 in Fig. While depicted as rectangular with rounded corners or curved sides, the openings 162-168 can be of any shape, including rectangular, oval, square, or any concave or convex polygonal shape with straight or curved lines. The third segment 170 can be located in the middle section 120 of the first part 110. The third segment 170 can abut the first segment 112, the second segment 122, the third opening 150, and the fourth opening 152 of the first section 110.

[0019] The rear isometric view of the bracket 100 in Fig. may depict an oblique view from an upper rear portion of an enclosure in which the bracket is located or installed, with the front of the enclosure corresponding to the location where the HBAs are to be inserted (as shown below in relation to Fig. (shown).

[0020] Fig. shows a bracket 102, which is the bracket 100 from Fig. corresponds to an isometric front view according to one aspect of the present application. Fig. The bracket 102 is viewed from a front 182 of the bracket 102, in an oblique view from a lower front part of the bracket 102.

[0021] Fig. shows a mounting assembly 200 with a bracket that corresponds to the bracket 100 of Fig. corresponds to, and a set of pre-assembled cables 220 in an isometric rear view according to one aspect of the present application. In Fig. The mounting assembly 200 is viewed from a rear view, which represents the rear 180 of the mounting 100. The mounting assembly 200 can contain a set of cables 220, which are inserted through the fourth opening 152 (unlabeled) of the mounting 100 and secured to the mounting 100 through the second cable connector opening 118 and the fourth cable connector opening 128. [0022] Fig. shows a mounting assembly 202 with a bracket that corresponds to the bracket 100 of Fig. corresponds to, and two sets of mounted cables 210 and 220 in an isometric rear view, including a gap 230 for airflow over the first set of mounted cables 210, in accordance with an aspect of the present application. The mounting assembly 202 may comprise: a first set of cables 210 inserted through the third opening 150 (unlabeled) of the mounting 100 and secured to the mounting 100 by the first cable connector opening 116 and the third cable connector opening 126; and a second set of cables 220 inserted through the fourth opening 152 (unlabeled) and secured to the mounting 100 by the second cable connector opening 118 (partially visible) and the fourth cable connector opening 128 (as shown above in Fig. (shown). When the first cable set 210 is inserted through the third opening 150 (unlabeled), the mounting assembly 202 can have a gap 230 between the inserted first cable set 210 and the second part 130 of the mounting 100. The mounting assembly 202 can thus allow airflow through both the gap 230 and the openings 162-168, providing cooling for the mounting assembly 202 and any components in the same housing that require cooling, such as the inserted HBAs 610 and 612, which are shown below in relation to Fig. are shown.

[0023] Fig. shows a mounting assembly 204, which corresponds to the mounting assembly 202 of Fig. This corresponds, in a rear view, to one aspect of the present application. The mounting assembly 204 has both the gap 230 and the openings 162-168 for airflow over and around the cable sets 210 and 220, which can provide cooling for the mounting assembly 204 and components such as cables 210 and 220 and HBAs 610 and 612.

[0024] Fig. shows a mounting assembly 206, which is made from the mounting assembly 202 Fig. This corresponds, from an isometric front view, to an aspect of the present application. The mounting assembly 206 has both the gap 230 and the opening 162-168 for airflow over and around the cable assemblies 210 and 220, which can provide cooling for the mounting assembly 206 and components such as cables 210 and 220 and HBAs 610 and 612. Fig. The mounting assembly 206 is seen from the front, showing the front 182 of the mounting 100.

[0025] Fig. shows a mounting assembly 208, which is made from the mounting assembly 202 Fig. This corresponds, in a front view, to one aspect of the present application. The mounting assembly 208 has both the gap 230 and the openings 162-168 for airflow over and around the cable sets 210 and 220, which can provide cooling for the mounting assembly 208 and components such as cables 210 and 220 and HBAs 610 and 612.

[0026] Fig. shows a mounting assembly 300, which includes the mounting bracket 100 (as in Fig. and two sets of assembled cables 210 and 220 (as in Fig. and comprises a pair of guide rails 310 and 330, in an isometric view from the rear and before the mounting bracket 100 is attached to the guide rails 310 and 330, according to one aspect of the present application. The term “end” in relation to the guide rails can refer to the end of the guide rail facing the mounting bracket, with the end referring to the end of the respective guide rail that is farther from the front of the chassis and closest to the rear of the chassis, as described above.

[0027] The pair of guide rails can comprise: a first rail 310 having a first tab (not visible) projecting from a first end (not visible) of the first rail 310 into a central region of the first rail 310, the first tab being able to have a first notch (not visible); and a second rail 330 having a second tab 332 projecting from a second end 360 of the second rail 330 into a central region of the second rail 330, the second tab 332 being able to have a second notch 334. The first end of the first rail 310 and the second end 360 of the second rail 330 refer to the end of the rails 310 and 330 that is closest to the bracket 100 or the rear of the chassis in which the bracket assembly 300 is housed. The middle sections of the rails 310 and 330 can refer to the same plane that runs parallel to the second part 130 of the bracket 100, approximately in a region near a middle section of the guide rails 310 and 330 in the vertical direction, e.g. in alignment with the second opening 124 of the second segment 122 of the first part 110.

[0028] The first rail 310 may further have a third tab projecting from the first end of the first rail 310 below the central region of the first rail 310, wherein the third tab may have a third notch (not shown). The second rail 330 may furthermore have a fourth tab 336 projecting from the second end 360 of the second rail 330 below the central region of the second rail 330, wherein the fourth tab may have a fourth notch 338.

[0029] The first end, the first tab and the first notch of the first rail 310 are in Fig. They are not visible, but appear at the same location on the first rail 310 as the second end 360, the second tab 332, and the second notch 334 of the rail 330. Similarly, the first end, the third tab, and the third notch of the first rail 310 are in Fig. not visible, but appear at the same place on the first rail 310 as the second end 360, the fourth tab 336 and the fourth notch 338 of the second rail 330.

[0030] The bracket 100 is to be attached to the guide rails 310 and 330 when the front face 182 of the first section 110 of the bracket 100 is positioned against the ends of the guide rails 310 and 330 such that: the first tab is inserted into the first opening 114 (not shown); the second tab 332 is inserted into the second opening 124 (via a movement indicated by a dashed line 350); a bottom surface of the first segment 112 touches or rests on a top surface of the third tab (not shown); and a bottom surface 184 of the second segment 122 touches or rests on a top surface of the fourth tab 336 (via a movement indicated by a dashed line 352).

[0031] Following the above placement and insertion movements, the holder 100 is further secured to the guide rails 310 and 330 as the holder 100 is pushed downwards, such that: the first opening 114 is in the first notch (not shown); the second opening 124 is in the second notch 334; the underside of the first segment 112 is in the third notch (not shown); and the underside 184 of the second segment 122 is in the fourth notch 338. The result of the placement, insertion, and sliding movements is described below in relation to the Fig. described.

[0032] The first rail 310 can also include a first post 320 with a first connection receptacle 322 incorporated into the first post 320, and the second rail 330 can also include a second post 340 with a second connection receptacle incorporated into the second post 330. Each connector receptacle can be a receptacle or opening into which a connection component or element can be inserted, screwed, or twisted, e.g., a threaded hole or threaded insert into which a screw can be inserted, screwed, or twisted.

[0033] After the bracket 100 has been attached to the guide rails 310 and 330 as described above, the bracket 100 is further attached to the guide rails 310 and 330 when a first connecting component 324 is inserted through the fifth opening 134 into the first connecting receptacle 322 (indicated by a dashed line 326) and a second connecting component 344 is inserted through the sixth opening 144 into the connecting receptacle 342 (indicated by a dashed line 346), so that the bracket 100 is locked in a fixed position with the guide rails 310 and 330.

[0034] Fig. shows a mounting assembly 400, which corresponds to the mounting assembly 300 of Fig. This corresponds to an isometric rear view after the bracket 100 has been attached to the guide rails 310 and 330, according to one aspect of the present application. In the bracket assembly 400, a first side (front 182) of the first part 110 was positioned against the ends of the guide rails 310 and 330, such that the first tab (not visible) is inserted into the first opening 114 (not visible) and the second tab 334 into the second opening 124. Furthermore, the bracket 100 is pushed downwards such that: the first opening 114 (not visible) rests in the first notch (not visible); the second opening 124 rests in the second notch 334; the first segment 112 (not visible) rests in the third notch (not visible); and the second segment 122 rests in the fourth notch 338.

[0035] Fig. shows a mounting assembly 402, which corresponds to the mounting assembly 400 of Fig. This corresponds to an isometric and zoomed-out rear view, including a housing 404 in which the mounting assembly 400 is located or installed, according to one aspect of the present application. The housing 404 may comprise: a bottom or underside 410 to which the pair of guide rails 310 and 330 can be attached; and a front 412 into which HBAs and other component cards can be inserted.

[0036] The weight of the cable assembly 210 can cause it to sag or bend downwards towards the underside 410 of the housing 404. In some embodiments, the cable assembly 210 can be supported by a support extending from the rear of the bracket, as shown below with respect to Fig. described.

[0037] Fig. Figure 1 shows a bracket 500 with a tray 510 in a first isometric view from the rear and slightly above the bracket 500, according to one aspect of the present application. The tray 510 can extend from a second side (rear 180) of the bracket 500. The tray 510 can support a set of cables (e.g., 210) that are inserted through the third opening 150, as shown below with reference to Fig. shown. The tray 510 can be manufactured as part of the manufacture of the bracket 500. The tray 510 can be made from a sheet of metal rigid enough to support the weight of some, all, or part of a cable set, as shown below in relation to Fig. described.

[0038] Fig. shows a bracket 502, which is the bracket 500 from Fig. This corresponds, including the tray 510, in a second isometric view from the rear and slightly below the bracket 502, according to one aspect of the present application. In the bracket 502, the tray 510 is shown projecting from the first part 110 at a perpendicular angle, leaving the openings 162-168 unobstructed. The tray 510, in its perpendicular orientation, also allows air to flow freely through the openings 162-168, providing cooling for the bracket assembly and any components connected to the bracket assembly that require cooling, such as the inserted HBAs 610 and 612, which are shown below in relation to Fig. The tray 510 can protrude from the first part 110 on the back 180 at a perpendicular or near-perpendicular angle (i.e., greater or less than a perpendicular angle by a predetermined amount).

[0039] Fig. shows a mounting assembly 504 with a bracket that corresponds to the brackets 500 and 502 of the Fig. , including the shell 510, with two sets of mounted cables 210 and 220 inserted into the bracket 504, from a first isometric rear view, which corresponds to the view of Fig. similarly, in accordance with an aspect of the present application.
