Abstract
Description
Technical FieldVarious embodiments generally relate to a radio device, a radio transmission device, and a radio system.BackgroundOne concept under investigation is to enable control of a device by simply targeting with a control device. Ultrawideband (UWB) technology attempts to achieve this using a so-called 3D-AoA (Angle of Arrival). The UWB solution is based on an advanced UWB chip capable of operating at least three separate antennas simultaneously.US 2017 / 0 195 855 A1 discloses a method for estimating a position of a terminal, comprising identifying direction information of a received signal when a connection is established between a terminal and an access point (AP), receiving information about an air pressure sensor from the terminal, and calculating the position of the terminal based on the direction information and the information about the air pressure sensor of the terminal.US 2021 / 0 286 044 A1 discloses a self-positioning system which is configured to estimate the direction of arrival of a radio wave tracking beacon signal arriving from an non-stationary tracking beacon unit at an antenna array of the vehicle, to estimate the Euclidean distance between the self-positioning system and the tracking beacon by using radio frequency wireless communication between the self-positioning system and the tracking beacon unit, and to determine position data identifying a three-dimensional position of the self-positioning system with respect to the tracking beacon unit on the basis of the estimates of the direction of arrival and the Euclidean distance.Brief Description of the InventionA radio transmission apparatus according to claim 1, a radio apparatus according to claim 9, a radio transmission apparatus according to claim 10, a radio system according to claim 11 and a method of controlling a radio apparatus according to claim 19 are provided. It is understood that basic characteristics of the devices also apply to the methods and vice versa. For the sake of brevity, a duplicate description of such characteristics may therefore be omitted.Currently, there are only a very limited number of UWB ICs on the market that are capable of detecting and utilizing 3D-AoA.It may be desirable to provide a way to use UWB for wirelessly controlling devices without having to use 3D-AoA technology. In various embodiments, a simpler (one-dimensional) AoA is combined with pressure sensor information (for providing a height) and inclination sensor information (e.g., from an accelerometer) to determine the device to which it is pointed.Illustratively described, the one-dimensional AoA may be used to determine a relative azimuth position between a controller and a target device, and pressure sensors included in both the controller and the target device may be used to determine a difference in elevation between the controller and the target device. In combination with a distance between the controller and the target device that can be derived from the UWB signals exchanged between the controller and the target device, an elevation angle at which the target appears from the location of the controller can be determined. By comparing the elevation angle with an inclination of the control device as a reference angle, it can be determined whether the elevation angle of a predetermined target device coincides with the reference angle. If this is confirmed, the control device can begin controlling the targeted device.FIGS. 4A to 4D and FIG. 5 show an application scenario with a control device, also referred to as radio transmission device 200, and three targeted devices A, B, and C, also referred to as controlled devices or as radio devices 100.In a case where all the radio apparatuses 100 that can be achieved by the control signals of the radio transmission apparatus 200 are arranged in different horizontal positions around the radio transmission apparatus 200 (in other words, in different azimuth angles), as illustrated in FIGS. 4A and 4B, for example, the one-dimensional AoA alone may be sufficient to detect the target apparatus among the radio apparatuses 100: the radio apparatus 100 to which the radio transmission apparatus 200 is directed has a "zero-degree incident angle".In a case where two or more of the radio devices 100 are "stacked", i.e., have the same azimuth angle, the one-dimensional AoA may not be sufficient to decide which of the radio devices 100 is pointed to. Such a situation is illustrated in FIGS. 4C, 4D and 5.In various embodiments, atmospheric pressure information is used to solve this problem. Each of the radio devices 100 and the radio transmission device 200 includes a sensor configured to measure atmospheric pressure at the respective device location. The pressure measurement is converted into height information and finally into a height difference between the radio transmission device 200 and each of the radio devices 100.Some currently available pressure sensors, e.g., Infineon's DPS310 pressure sensor, are capable of detecting a 10 cm or less change in elevation, which is sufficient for typical wireless device control. In order to be able to determine the device on which the device is shown, an angle with respect to a horizontal plane (which is orthogonal to the direction of gravity) is relevant in which the radio transmission device is arranged when the radio device 100 is shown. If this angle, also referred to as a reference angle α ref matches an angle at which the radio device 100 is "viewed" from the location of the radio transmission device 200, the radio device 100 to which is shown is identified. In the example illustrated in FIG. 5, the radio device 100 to which the radio device 200 is shown is device B, therefore, the reference angle α ref, at which the radio transmission device 200 is held in the direction of aiming, corresponds to the angle α B. The other two angles α A and α C do not correspond to the reference angle α ref.In order to determine the angle α at which a respective radio device 100 is seen from the radio transmission device 200, information about a distance d between the radio transmission device 200 and the respective radio device 100 may be required. The UWB radio signals (whose frequency may be in a range from about 3.5 GHz to about 10 GHz) used to control the radio devices 100 include ultra-short pulses that enable determination of the line-of-sight distance d between a transmitter and a receiver. A request from a transmitter to a receiver can be followed by an immediate response of the receiver to the transmitter. From the time elapsed between the transmission of the request by the transmitter and the reception of the response in the transmitter and using additional information about a response time (the time required for the receiver to transmit the response), the distance d between the transmitter and the receiver can be determined. This technique is known in UWB radio technology as UWB ranging, and is provided by the UWB integrated circuit (IC) AoA, so it will not be explained here in detail. As shown in FIG. 5, the following equations apply to the configuration shown and described above: (the controlling device) and the radio device 100 (the controlled device). The distance d may be different for the radio devices A, B, and C. d is determined by the UWB ranging with the integrated circuit (IC) AoA UWB.h A= the calculated height (height above ground) at which the radio device 100 (in this case A, but analogously applies to B, C, CTRL) is located.sin α A= sine of the angle between the horizontal and the shortest connecting line between the radio transmission device 200 (CTRL) and the radio device 100 (in this case, A, but applies in the same way to B, C).Thus, in general, an elevation angle α can be determined at which a radio device 100 is seen from a radio transmission device 200: wherein h is the elevation at the location of the radio device 100, h is Ref the elevation at the location of the radio transmission device 200, and d is the (shortest, line-of-sight) distance between the radio device 100 and the radio transmission device 200.In various embodiments, additional information, namely the inclination of the radio transmission device 200 when it is directed at the targeted radio device 100, is provided by an inclination sensor in the radio transmission device 200.Inclination sensors are frequently used in mobile devices as part of an acceleration sensor. The radio transmission device (the control device) may be equipped with an integrated acceleration sensor. Typically, such an accelerometer may be used to determine when an operating system of the radio communication device 200 is to transition between a sleep state and an active state, or vice versa. When the control device is directed at A, B or C, it is inclined by an angle α ref to the horizontal. This angle α ref can be easily derived from the acceleration value. Finally, α ref may be compared to α A, α B, α C to determine which of the radio devices 100 (A, B, or C) is the target. In various embodiments, this solution may enable the implementation of point and trigger use cases using readily available AoA UWB ICs.Moreover, this solution has the potential to locate a target more accurately than a pure 3D-AoA.In addition, the number of antennas in the radio transmission device 200 and the radio devices 100 can be reduced. For example, two antennas may be provided to allow one-dimensional azimuth angle to be determined, and a third antenna, which would optionally allow 3D-AoA information to be provided, may be omitted. The determination of the elevation angle, the distance d, and for which of the radio devices 100 the elevation angle α coincides with the reference angle α ref may be performed for each of the radio devices 100 either in the radio transmission device 200 or in the radio device 100, or one or more of the determination operations may be performed in the radio transmission device 200 and one or more of the determination operations may be performed in the respective radio device 100.FIG. 1 shows a schematic illustration of a radio device 100 according to various embodiments. The radio device 100 comprises a radio receiver 108 configured to receive radio signals from a radio transmission device 200 (the radio transmission device 200 is illustrated in FIG. 2 and described below in the corresponding description). The radio receiver 108 may include two antennas that enable one-dimensional determination of an angle of incidence (in other words, an angle at which the radio signal is received). The two antennas may be arranged to define an azimuth angle, i.e., an angle in a plane orthogonal to a gravity direction. The radio device 100 also comprises a radio transmitter 106 configured to transmit radio signals. The radio receiver 108 and the radio transmitter 106 may be configured as is known in the art for a radio device 100 configured to determine the one-dimensional angle of incidence (AoA).The radio device 100 also includes a pressure sensor 110 configured to detect the atmospheric pressure, e.g., an Infineon pressure sensor DPS 310 or a similar sensor. Both the radio receiver 108 and the radio transmitter 106 may be controlled by a processor 102.The processor 102 may be configured as is known in the art with respect to fundamentally controlling the radio receiver 108 and the radio transmitter 106, but may also be configured for other functions as described herein. The following description of a configuration of the processor 102 may correspond to a first embodiment. The processor 102 may be configured to, in various embodiments, instruct the radio transmitter 106 to transmit a radio signal R to the radio transmission device 200 upon receipt of a radio signal request Q from the radio transmission device 200.In various embodiments, the processor 102 may be further configured to instruct the radio transmission device 200 to provide device information I, wherein the device information I may include or consist of a device identification and the air pressure (or a value derived therefrom, such as the height above the theoretical ground level of zero meters). The processor 102 may be further configured to instruct execution of an action according to the control information received from the radio transmission device 200.FIG. 2 shows a schematic illustration of a radio transmission apparatus 200 according to various embodiments. The radio transmission device 200 may include a radio transmitter 206 configured to transmit radio signals to a radio device 100.The radio transmission device 200 may further include a radio receiver 208 configured to receive radio signals and a pressure sensor 210 configured to determine the atmospheric pressure at a location of the radio transmission device 200. The radio transmitter 206, the radio receiver 208, and the pressure sensor 210 may be similar or identical to those described above for the radio device 100. In particular, the radio receiver 208 of the radio transmission apparatus 200 can also be configured for one-dimensional AoA determination as described above. The radio transmission device 200 may further include a sensor 220 configured to determine an inclination angle of the radio transmission device 200. The inclination angle of the radio transmission device 200 during intended control of a targeted radio device 100 may be referred to as a reference angle α ref. The inclination angle (and in particular the reference angle α ref) can be measured with respect to a horizontal plane, as shown in FIG. 5.The sensor 220, also referred to as a tilt sensor 220, may be part of an accelerometer, which is often present in smart mobile devices, e.g., mobile phones, in various embodiments. Alternatively, the sensor 220 may be configured to allow only determination of the angle of inclination, or configured to sense other additional parameters instead of or in addition to acceleration. The radio transmission device 200 may further include a processor 202. The processor 202 may be configured to instruct the radio device 100 to send a request Q for an immediate response R, determine a distance d to the radio device 100 using the response R, receive from the radio device 100 device information I including or consisting of an atmospheric pressure value at the location of the radio device 100 and a device identification, determine an elevation angle α between the radio transmission device 200 and the radio device 100 using the determined atmospheric pressure of the received atmospheric pressure or the value derived therefrom and the determined distance d to the radio device 100, compare the inclination angle α ref with the elevation angle α, and instruct, if the inclination angle α ref matches the elevation angle α, control information matching the device identification, transmitting to instruct the radio device 100 to perform an action. The above-described radio apparatus 100 according to a first embodiment and the radio transmission apparatus 200 according to a first embodiment may together form a radio system 300 according to a first embodiment.A radio system 300 according to various embodiments is illustrated, for example, in FIG. 3.FIG. 6 shows a sequence of processes according to various embodiments and in particular according to the first embodiment. Currently active elements are marked filled with dots.Illustration a) of FIG. 6 shows how the processor 202 of the radio transmission device 200 instructs the radio transmitter 206 to transmit a radio signal to the radio device 100. The radio signal may be configured as a trigger signal T that serves to place the radio device 100 from a standby mode to an active mode. The radio signal may simultaneously contain a request Q for an immediate response R. In illustration a), it is further illustrated that the radio receiver 108 of the radio device 108 receives the radio signal (the trigger T and the request Q) and forwards it to the processor 102.Illustration b) of FIG. 6 shows how the processor 102 processes the received request Q and sends the immediate response R via the radio transmitter 106.In various embodiments, device information I may be provided as payload for the response R, as shown in representation b). Alternatively, other channels may be used to transmit at least some of the device information I to the radio transmission device 200. For example, the device information I may be provided (at least partially) via Bluetooth ®, as an optical signal or via another transmission channel between the radio device 100 and the radio transmission device 200.The device information I may include or consist of a device identification (e.g., an address, a type, etc.), the pressure detected by the pressure sensor 110, the corresponding altitude value, or other signal representing the altitude at the location of the radio device 100, and a response time corresponding to an elapsed time period between the reception of the radio signal request Q and the transmission of the response radio signal R.Illustration c) of FIG. 6 illustrates processing of the information received from the radio device 100 in the processor 202 of the radio transmission device 200 using additional information from the pressure sensor 210 of the radio transmission device 200.The processor 202 may determine the distance d between the radio device 100 and the radio transmission device 200 from the time between the transmission of the request signal Q and the reception of the response signal R in consideration of the response time (the delay) in the radio device 100, as described above. The processor 202 may further determine the elevation angle α between the radio transmission device 200 and the radio device 100.Illustration d) of FIG. 6 shows the ascertainment of the inclination α ref of the radio transmission device 200 with the aid of the inclination sensor 220.Illustration e) of FIG. 6 shows the comparison of the inclination α ref of the radio transmission device 200 with the elevation angle α between the radio transmission device 200 and the radio device 100. Because the angles are coincident, a control signal C is generated by the processor 202 and transmitted from the transmitter 206 to the radio device 100. The control signal C is configured to match the radio device 100, e.g., its type that can be determined from its identification, and a desired action. Moreover, the control signal C may be accompanied by a device identification to ensure that only the desired radio device 100 receives the control signal C.The term "type" in this context may refer to a general type of (controllable) radio device, e.g., whether the radio device 100 is a speaker, a lamp, a television, a radio, a switch, etc., and / or a more specific type, e.g., a television of a particular model of a particular manufacturer, etc.The desired action may be any type of action that is radio controllable, e.g., turning output on / off, dimming, adjusting, selecting from a menu, etc.In various embodiments, the processor 202 may be further configured to control a display of the radio transmission device 200 to display a menu corresponding to the type of the radio device 100.In the case of a mismatch between the inclination α ref of the radio transmission device 200 and the elevation angle α, no control signal would be transmitted to the radio device 100.In the example illustrated in FIG. 5, the radio device B would be the only device in which the inclination α ref of the radio transmission device 200 coincides with the elevation angle α, in this case the elevation angle α B. Thus, the control signal C would be configured to match device B (with respect to a device ID provided with the control signal C and a type of control signal), and not to one of devices A or C.As described above, the processor 202 of the radio transmission device 200 and the processor 102 of the radio device 102 may be configured differently from that described above for the first embodiment to distribute the determination processes differently thereto. In a second embodiment, the radio device 100 may include a processor 102 configured to, upon receiving a radio signal from the radio transmission device 200, instruct the radio transmitter 106 to transmit to the radio transmission device 200 a request for an immediate response, determine a distance d to the radio transmission device 200 using the response, receive from the radio transmission device 200 device information I including or consisting of an atmospheric pressure value at the location of the radio transmission device 200 or a value derived therefrom, determine an elevation angle α between the radio transmission device 200 and the radio device 100 using the determined atmospheric pressure, the received atmospheric pressure or the value derived therefrom, and the determined distance d to the radio device 100, instruct device information I to provide to the radio transmission device 200, wherein the device information I may include or consist of a device identification ID and the elevation angle α, and instruct to perform an action according to control information C received from the radio transmission device 200.In a second embodiment, the radio transmission device 200 may include a processor 202 configured to, upon receiving a radio signal request Q from the radio device 100, instruct the radio transmitter 206 to transmit a radio signal R to the radio device 100, instruct to provide device information I to the radio device 100, wherein the device information I includes or consists of the determined atmospheric pressure or a value derived therefrom, receive from the radio device 100 device information I including or consists of an elevation angle α between the radio transmission device 200 and the radio device 100 and a device identification ID, compare the inclination angle α with the elevation angle α ref and, if the inclination angle α matches the elevation angle α ref instruct, To transmit control information C corresponding to the device identification ID to instruct the radio device 100 to perform an action. In various embodiments, a radio system 300 may include a radio device 100 according to the second embodiment and a radio transmission device 200 according to the second embodiment.FIG. 7 shows a sequence of processes according to various embodiments and in particular according to the second embodiment.Illustration a) of FIG. 7 illustrates how the processor 202 of the radio transmission device 200 instructs the radio transmitter 206 to transmit a radio signal to the radio device 100. The radio signal may be configured as a trigger signal T that switches the radio device 100 from a standby mode to an active mode. In illustration a), it is further illustrated that the radio receiver 108 of the radio device 100 receives the radio signal (the trigger T) and forwards it to the processor 102.Illustration b) of FIG. 7 illustrates that the processor 102 processes the received trigger signal T and instructs the radio transmitter 106 to transmit an immediate response R request Q to the radio transmission device 200. In illustration b), it is further illustrated that the request Q is received by the radio receiver 208 of the radio transmission device 200 and forwarded to the processor 202, and that the processor 202 requests from the pressure sensor 210 a pressure value (or more generally a value representing the height of the radio transmission device 200).Illustration c) of FIG. 7 shows that the processor 202 instructs the radio transmitter 206 to transmit the instant response R to the radio device 100. That is, in this second embodiment, the radio device 100 is configured to initiate the measurement of the distance d by requesting and receiving the immediate response signal R. The time elapsed between the sending of the request Q and the receipt of the response R serves as a basis for obtaining the distance d between the radio device 100 and the radio transmission device 200 as described above. In illustration c), it is further illustrated that the response signal R is received by the radio receiver 108 of the radio device 100 and forwarded to the processor 102.In various embodiments, the device information I may be provided as described above in connection with FIG. 6, e.g., as a payload for the response R as illustrated in illustration c).The device information I may include or consist of the pressure detected by the pressure sensor 210, the corresponding altitude value, or another signal representing the altitude at the location of the radio transmission device 200, and the response time (in this case, the response time of the radio transmission device 200).Illustration d) of FIG. 7 illustrates processing of the information received from the radio transmission device 200 in the processor 102 of the radio device 100 using additional information from the pressure sensor 110 of the radio device 100.The processor 102 may determine the distance d between the radio device 100 and the radio transmission device 200 as described above from the time elapsed between the transmission of the request signal Q and the reception of the response signal R in consideration of the response time (the delay) in the radio transmission device 200. The processor 102 may further determine the elevation angle α between the radio transmission device 200 and the radio device 100.Illustration e) of FIG. 7 shows that the processor 102 instructs the radio transmitter 106 to transmit the determined elevation angle α to the radio transmission device 200, where they are received in the radio receiver 208 and forwarded to the processor 202. In illustration e), the ascertainment of the inclination α ref of the radio transmission device 200 with the aid of the inclination sensor 220 is also illustrated.Illustration f) of FIG. 7 shows the comparison of the inclination α ref of the radio transmission device 200 with the elevation angle α between the radio transmission device 200 and the radio device 100. Because the angles are coincident, a control signal C is generated by the processor 202 and transmitted from the transmitter 206 to the radio device 100. The control signal C is configured to match the radio device 100, e.g., its type that can be determined from its identification and a desired action. Moreover, the control signal C may be accompanied by a device identification to ensure that only the targeted radio device 100 receives the control signal C. Other features of the control signal C may correspond to those described above in connection with FIG. 6.Given that the pressure sensors 110, 210 may resolve small height differences of about 10 cm, the height resolution at a considerable distance from the radio transmission device 200 may be finer than hands-free targeting by a user. In such an environment of use, the radio transmission device 200 may be provided with an optical guide, e.g., a laser or a directional LED. The optical guidance may be activated at the radio transmission device 200, e.g. manually by pressing a key, or e.g. automatically when the radio transmission device 200 is activated. The optical guide may provide a visually recognizable signal at the target location. This allows the user to adjust his destination until the desired device is displayed.FIG. 8 shows a flow diagram 800 of a method for controlling a radio device according to various embodiments. The method may include: determining respective atmospheric pressures at a location of the radio device and at a location of a radio transmission device (810); determining a distance between the radio device and the radio transmission device using a requesting radio signal and a response to the radio signal exchanged between the radio device and the radio transmission device (820); determining an elevation angle between the radio transmission device and the radio device using the atmospheric pressures and the determined distance (830); determining an inclination angle of the radio transmission device (840); comparing the inclination angle to the elevation angle (850); and if the inclination angle matches the elevation angle, sending control instructions from the radio transmission device to the radio device (860).Various examples are explained below:Example 1 is a radio device comprising a radio receiver configured to receive radio signals from a radio transmission device, a radio transmitter, a pressure sensor configured to determine the atmospheric pressure, and a processor configured to, upon receiving a radio signal request from the radio transmission device, instruct the radio transmitter to transmit a radio signal to the radio transmission device, instruct to provide device information to the radio transmission device, wherein the device information includes or consists of a device identification and the atmospheric pressure, and instruct to perform an action according to control information received from the radio transmission device. In Example 2, the subject matter of Example 1 can optionally include that the device information further includes a response time corresponding to a time period that passes between receiving the radio signal request and transmitting the radio signal. In Example 3, the subject matter of Example 1 or 2 can optionally include that the device information is provided as payload information of the transmitted radio signal and / or as separate transmission. In Example 4, the subject matter of Example 3 can optionally include that the separate transmission is a transmission of another radio signal or a transmission over another transmission channel. In Example 5, the subject matter of Example 4 can optionally include that the other transmission channel comprises at least one of a group of transmission channels, the group consisting of Bluetooth® WLAN, and optical or near infrared transmission. In Example 6, the subject matter of any one of Examples 1 to 5 can optionally include that the control information received from the radio transmission device is received by the radio receiver. In Example 7, the subject matter of any one of Examples 1 to 6 can optionally include that a frequency of the radio signals is in a range from about 3.5 GHz to about 10 GHz.In Example 8, the subject matter of any one of Examples 1 to 7 can optionally include that the radio signals are ultra-wideband (UWB) signals.Example 9 is a radio transmission device.
