Description

Technical area

[0001] The present invention relates to compositions for dental hygiene and dental prevention and treatment. In particular, the present invention relates to natural compositions for preventing or alleviating gingivitis, as well as compositions for use in a method for treating and / or preventing gingivitis. Background of the invention

[0002] Studies have shown that many people have problems with their gums, making effective dental and oral hygiene, as well as the prevention and treatment of gingivitis and other dental problems, of considerable importance in everyday life. Periodontal inflammation (periodontitis, gum disease) is by far the most common disease in Germany. This is according to data from a recent oral health study: 52% of people over the age of 35 are affected by periodontitis, and among seniors, the figure rises to 90%. Periodontitis is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide. In Germany, approximately 11.5 million people suffer from a severe form of this widespread disease (Micheelis, W. et al., Third German Oral Health Study (DMS III): Results, Trends and Problem Analyses Based on Population-Representative Samples in Germany 1997. Deutscher Ärzte-Verlag, Cologne 1999).

[0003] It's worth noting that conventional toothpastes can contain a number of ingredients that are harmful to health. Although toothpaste isn't usually swallowed, its ingredients are absorbed through the oral mucosa and thus enter the bloodstream particularly quickly. This is particularly aggravated by the polyethylene glycols sometimes contained in toothpastes, as these promote the permeability of the oral mucosa, allowing harmful substances to be absorbed more easily.

[0004] Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS or SDS) is particularly controversial because it is considered allergenic and a skin irritant. Its use can lead to or promote the development of small, painful mouth ulcers (canker sores). Titanium dioxide, which is used to whiten toothpaste, is also not considered safe, as it is suspected of being harmful to health, mutagenic, and carcinogenic. Parabens, which are very similar in structure to the female sex hormone estrogen, are similarly concerning, leading to fears that they can disrupt people's hormonal balance. There are also concerns about the substance chlorhexidine, which inhibits caries bacteria. With prolonged use, this substance not only discolors teeth brownishly, but is also suspected of disrupting the natural oral flora. The anti-cavity ingredient cetylpyridinium chloride is classified as a strong mucosal irritant. The antibacterial agent triclosan can trigger contact allergies and has shown harmful effects on the hormonal system in animal studies.

[0005] Another key ingredient in many toothpastes is fluoride. When swallowed regularly in small amounts, fluoride has no noticeable acute toxic effect. However, chronic fluoride intake can be harmful and lead to a condition called fluorosis, which initially manifests as harmless discoloration of the tooth enamel and can lead to, among other things, skeletal and especially joint problems.

[0006] Abrasives can also be problematic because they can damage tooth enamel. Dental care products with an RDA (relative dentin abrasion) above 80 should therefore be avoided.

[0007] Furthermore, several commonly used ingredients are considered environmentally harmful or at least ecologically questionable. For example, common toothpastes can also contain microplastics, particularly in the form of polyethylene and / or polypropylene.

[0008] Known from the prior art is document WO 2022 / 082218, which discloses dermatological compositions that may contain, among other ingredients, cinnamon oil, myrrh oil, and red clover extract, as well as their applications, particularly with regard to improving damaged skin as a result of a bacterial infection or, more generally, as a result of environmental influences such as sunlight (UV radiation). Furthermore, an example of a mouthwash solution is disclosed that contains, among other ingredients, cinnamon- and peppermint-based flavors and fluoride. Fluoride is used, in particular, to prevent caries.

[0009] Document DE 10 2005 019 653 A1 discloses plant extracts that can be used to treat halitosis, gingivitis, or periodontitis. In particular, the function of the cosmetic and pharmaceutical compositions is to inhibit the enzyme methionine gamma-lyase (METase). The disclosed plant extracts include, for example, red clover extract, but also cinnamon oil, which can function as an aromatic oil. Furthermore, binding agents or consistency regulators, such as montmorillonite clays, may be present. Furthermore, a preferred pH range between 7.5 and 9 is disclosed, which can be achieved by adding acid.

[0010] Document WO 2012 / 174091 A2 discloses body care compositions that may contain, among other ingredients, flavonoids, which may be obtained, for example, by extraction from red clover. Furthermore, the compositions may contain certain plant extracts with antibacterial properties, such as cinnamon oil, in a concentration range between 0.0001 and 30 wt.%.

[0011] Document US 2022 / 0331344 A1 discloses oral compositions comprising at least one botanical extract of a psychotropic macrofungus and at least one mouthfeel enhancer. For example, the document describes methods and materials for the manufacture of dissolvable lozenges, disclosing cinnamon oil, among others, as a suitable mouthfeel enhancer.

[0012] Document DE 10 2010 040 567 A1 discloses cosmetic agents and compositions comprising microcapsules that are low in or free of formaldehyde. Among other ingredients, cinnamon oil is disclosed as a long-lasting fragrance, red clover extract as a source of isoflavones or isoflavone glycosides, and yarrow extract as a usable plant extract. Furthermore, the cosmetic compositions can contain, for example, antimicrobial, antiperspirant, skin-lightening, moisturizing, and / or anti-caries or anti-tartar active ingredients.

[0013] The document DE 10 2005 014 687 A1 discloses compositions which in particular comprise human beta-defensin 2 as an antimicrobial active ingredient. The compositions are in particular selected from cosmetic and / or pharmaceutical compositions, washing and / or cleaning agents, water treatment agents and cooling lubricants. Red clover extract is disclosed as a possible source of isoflavones or their glycosides. Yarrow is named as an example of a plant extract. Furthermore, peppermint oil, cinnamon oil and myrrh extract are disclosed, as well as the use of organic or inorganic thickeners in amounts of up to 2 wt.% in total with respect to the total composition. In this context, montmorillonite clays are disclosed, among others, as representatives of the phyllosilicates, which can be used as binders and consistency regulators. In addition, substances such asα- and β-hydroxycarboxylic acids are added to regulate the pH of the composition.

[0014] Furthermore, document DE 102018 126 513 A1 discloses oral or dental care cleansers containing at least one mineral of plant origin. Examples of extracts mentioned in this context include chamomile, yarrow, peppermint, cinnamon, horsetail, and myrrh. Clay minerals such as montmorillonite and kaolin are also described, preferably comprising between 10 and 40% by weight of the total composition. Furthermore, a basic pH value is to be maintained on the treated surfaces, particularly tooth surfaces, by leaving the plant oil as a protective layer on the (tooth) surface, thus protecting it from negative acid influences.

[0015] Considering the multitude of substances that are harmful to health, the increasing importance of environmentally friendly and sustainable products, as well as the prevalence of gum problems, there is a clear need for toothpastes that are safe and sustainable, while at the same time enabling effective prevention and treatment of gum problems, especially gingivitis, preferably without the disadvantages described above.

[0016] A technical object of the invention is therefore to provide a toothpaste composition which is harmless to health and sustainable, and which at the same time enables effective prevention and treatment of gum problems, especially gingivitis.

[0017] The object is achieved by a toothpaste composition according to claim 1. Further advantageous embodiments of the present invention are the subject of the dependent claims. Summary of the invention

Detailed description

[0048] Due to health and environmental concerns and current trends, it was important to develop an oral care product whose ingredients are formulated to have an anti-inflammatory and pH-stabilizing effect, ideally produced entirely sustainably and from natural ingredients, preferably without artificial flavor enhancers, artificial abrasives, and artificial preservatives.

[0049] In particular, patients whose oral hygiene is normal to above-average, but whose periodontal health remains suboptimal despite proper care and regular dental visits, should be helped to reduce or improve these symptoms. Professional athletes, whose hyperacidity is always a major concern and thus inflammatory parameters in the oral cavity also play a role, should also be provided with a product that alleviates such inflammatory processes. In the normal dental care sector, there are products that, while user-friendly, contain some ingredients that do not primarily have therapeutic value.Furthermore, most commercially available products contain ingredients that, while pleasant in taste and sometimes provide a refreshing sensation for the user, are not free from artificial flavors and flavor enhancers, contain sugar, and are not always sustainably produced. The primary goal of this development was to provide a sustainable product that is plant-based, free of artificial flavors and preservatives, and also has positive effects in terms of anti-inflammatory properties, tartar reduction, and caries protection.

[0050] In a first aspect, as described above, there is provided a toothpaste composition comprising (i) 0.01 to 1 wt%, preferably 0.025 to 0.5 wt%, more preferably 0.05 to 0.2 wt%, of cinnamon oil, and (ii) 0.003 to 0.3 wt%, preferably 0.005 to 0.1 wt%, more preferably 0.01 to 0.05 wt%, of Trifolium pratense (meadow clover / red clover) extract.

[0051] In one embodiment, the cinnamon oil is Cinnamomum zeylanicum oil.

[0052] In a further aspect, a toothpaste composition as defined in the first aspect is provided for use in a method of treating and / or preventing gingivitis.

[0053] In preferred embodiments, the application comprises a usual and regular, preferably twice daily, oral application, wherein the application preferably takes place over a period of at least 14 days.

[0054] In one embodiment of the second aspect, the method for treating and / or preventing gingivitis comprises increasing the pH value in the oral cavity. ExamplesExample 1:
