Abstract
Description
[0001] The invention relates to a battery, in particular a traction battery, for a motor vehicle. The battery has a number of battery cells. Furthermore, the invention relates to a high-voltage system having such a battery and to an electrically powered motor vehicle having such a battery. Furthermore, the invention relates to an arrangement for mechanically and electrically contacting a plurality of battery cells of such a battery. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for producing such a battery.
[0002] A battery, particularly a lithium-ion battery (Li-ion battery), typically comprises several battery cells that are electrically connected in series and / or parallel to one another by means of cell connectors. In particular, the battery cells are arranged side by side for a space-saving design and combined into so-called (cell) modules. However, the invention is not limited to this type of battery. Rather, any other type of battery may be the subject of the invention.
[0003] Particularly in electrically powered motor vehicles, a traction battery has a comparatively high energy storage capacity, thus providing a correspondingly long range for the user of the motor vehicle. However, if the energy storage densities of the battery or battery cells are high, for example due to an internal short circuit or overcharging of the battery cell, a self-reinforcing chain reaction can occur, which is referred to as thermal runaway. During thermal runaway, on the one hand, a correspondingly high amount of heat energy is released in a short period of time, and on the other hand, an additional gas is produced in the affected battery cell, particularly due to decomposition of the electrolyte, which creates high internal pressure in the battery cell.
[0004] As a result, the battery cell can deform, and the resulting chemical reactions can quickly lead to a rise in temperature to high values, potentially damaging neighboring battery cells. Alternatively, or additionally, heat transfer to the respective neighboring battery cell, for example, via cell connectors, can also trigger thermal runaway (propagation) in this battery cell.
[0005] A traction battery for an electrically powered motor vehicle is known from DE 10 2019 208 571 B3. The battery has a number of battery cells and a number of devices for detecting thermal runaway. The devices are each thermally coupled to a battery cell. Each of the devices can be designed as a thermistor, wherein a change in the electrical resistance resulting from the change in the electrical resistance of a thermistor is detected by a device. Each of the thermistors can be designed as a PTC thermistor.
[0006] WO 2011 / 109389 A2 discloses a system for monitoring a battery having a plurality of cells. A plurality of positive temperature coefficient (PTC) devices are configured to detect a relative temperature at a respective one of the plurality of cells. The PTC devices can be electrically connected in series.
[0007] It is an object of the present invention to provide a battery, in particular a traction battery, for a motor vehicle, which has a small number of components for contacting at least one battery cell of the battery. Further, corresponding objects of the present invention relate to a motor vehicle and a high-voltage system with a battery, an arrangement for contacting battery cells of a battery, and a method for producing a battery.
[0008] A contacting arrangement and a battery with the contacting arrangement are proposed. Furthermore, the battery can be part of a motor vehicle, in particular a road vehicle. Specifically, the battery can be a traction battery of the motor vehicle, i.e. the battery forms an energy storage device for the traction system of the motor vehicle. In particular, the battery can be part of a high-voltage system. A “high-voltage system,” particularly in motor vehicles, is understood to mean an electrical system operated with alternating voltages above 30 V or with direct voltages above 60 V. Furthermore, a method for producing such a battery is proposed. Configurations of the battery and of the method correspond to one another. Therefore, if a feature of a configuration of the battery is described, this implies that the battery can be manufactured accordingly.
[0009] The proposed contacting arrangement serves to contact at least one of the battery cells of a battery. The contacting arrangement comprises a circuit board, which has at least one electrical contact for electrically contacting a terminal of one of the plurality of battery cells of the battery and at least one mechanical contact area for mechanically contacting one of the plurality of battery cells. The circuit board therefore fulfills at least two functions, which is why the number of required components is low overall.
[0010] The at least one electrical contact serves for the electrical connection to a pole (i.e. an electrical connection, in particular a positive pole) of one of the plurality of battery cells. If the contacting arrangement is part of a battery, the electrical connection to the pole is established. Preferably, the circuit board has a plurality of electrical contacts and each of these electrical contacts is designed to be connected to a respective pole of one of the plurality of battery cells, wherein several of the electrical contacts and preferably all of these electrical contacts serve for the electrical contacting of different battery cells. This means that the poles of a corresponding number of several of the battery cells are each connected to one of the electrical contacts. With a corresponding design of the battery, this electrical connection is established in each case.In particular, the arrangement of the electrical contacts of the circuit board is coordinated with the arrangement of the battery cells and the positions of the battery cell poles in such a way that electrical contact with the common circuit board is possible. This does not preclude the possibility of multiple groups of battery cells, each of whose poles is electrically contacted via a common circuit board. For example, there are two stacks of battery cells arranged side by side, with at least one common circuit board provided for contacting on opposite sides of these two stacks.
[0011] A temperature sensor is arranged on the at least one mechanical contact region of the contacting arrangement for detecting a temperature or for detecting a change in the temperature of the battery cell contacted by the mechanical contact region. The temperature sensor can be designed differently depending on the embodiment. It is preferred that the temperature sensor is a thermistor, i.e. an electrical resistance of the temperature sensor changes depending on the temperature. A thermistor with a positive temperature coefficient (PTC), i.e. a PTC thermistor, is particularly preferred. This allows such PTC thermistors to be connected electrically in series, wherein, for example, each of the series-connected thermistors is thermally coupled to a different battery cell. Each of the thermistors therefore monitors a temperature change of the battery cell assigned to it.If the temperature of one of the battery cells rises, this increases the electrical resistance of the associated thermistor, and this is detected as an increase in the electrical resistance of the electrical series connection of thermistors. The advantage of such a circuit is that the associated battery cells can be monitored jointly to determine whether a significant temperature increase occurs in any of these battery cells. Not only in this exemplary embodiment, a measure can be taken based on a detected temperature increase, such as the electrical shutdown of the battery or at least one of the battery cells.
[0012] Since there is a temperature sensor in the mechanical contact area of the circuit board, this is thermally coupled to the battery cell with which the contact area is in mechanical contact. It is preferred that the heat transfer from the mechanically contacted battery cell to the temperature sensor is good through the use of suitable materials, such as a pad or paste with good thermal conductivity. The temperature sensor can be arranged on the circuit board in different ways and can basically be arranged on either side of the mechanical contact area or be integrated into the circuit board. However, if the sensor is mounted on the surface of the circuit board, i.e. using so-called SMD (Surface Mounted Device) technology, it is preferred that the temperature sensor is mounted on the side facing away from the battery cell. This protects the temperature sensor from the effects of excessive localized forces. In other words, it is preferable for the mechanical contact area of the circuit board to be in full contact with the surface of the battery cell.
[0013] The aforementioned dual function of the circuit board—namely, electrical and mechanical contact—also includes the thermal coupling of the temperature sensor to a battery cell due to the presence of the temperature sensor in the mechanical contact area. A further function of the circuit board is to electrically connect the temperature sensor to an electrical circuit that enables the evaluation of the sensor signals and / or the monitoring of the temperatures occurring at the temperature sensor. Optionally, not only the electrical connection of the temperature sensor to this electrical circuit can be part of the circuit board, but at least another part of the electrical circuit can also be implemented in and / or on the circuit board. For example, logic that evaluates the resistance of the temperature sensor and possibly other temperature sensors thermally coupled to other battery cells of the battery can be implemented as part of the circuit board. If the circuit board has a plurality of mechanical contact areas, each with a temperature sensor, at least the electrical connections of all of these temperature sensors can be part of the circuit board. The electrical connections include, in particular, the electrical contacts to the respective temperature sensor and electrical conductor tracks in and / or on the circuit board.
[0014] In summary, it is proposed in particular: A battery, in particular a traction battery, for a motor vehicle with a plurality of battery cells and with a contact arrangement for contacting the battery cells, wherein - the contacting arrangement comprises a printed circuit board which has at least one electrical contact for electrically contacting a pole of one of the plurality of battery cells and at least one mechanical contact area for mechanically contacting one of the plurality of battery cells, - the at least one electrical contact is electrically connected to a pole of one of the plurality of battery cells, - a temperature sensor is arranged on the at least one mechanical contact area for detecting a temperature or for detecting a change in the temperature of the battery cell contacted by the mechanical contact area.
[0015] Furthermore, a contacting arrangement for a battery with the aforementioned features is proposed. The features of embodiments of the battery described below also apply accordingly to embodiments of the contacting arrangement, insofar as they relate to them.
[0016] In one embodiment of the battery, a plurality of battery cells form a stack of battery cells, wherein the circuit board extends along the plurality of battery cells. In this embodiment of the battery or in a corresponding embodiment of the contacting arrangement, the circuit board has a plurality of electrical contacts for electrically contacting a respective pole of one of the plurality of battery cells of the stack and a plurality of mechanical contact regions for mechanically contacting a respective battery cell of the plurality of battery cells of the stack. Each of the plurality of electrical contacts is electrically connected to a pole of one of the battery cells of the stack, and each of the plurality of mechanical contact regions is mechanically connected to one of the battery cells of the stack. In particular, in this way, each of the battery cells in the same stack can be mechanically and electrically contacted by a common circuit board, i.e., one pole of the respective battery cells is electrically connected to the circuit board, and a mechanical contact area containing a temperature sensor is mechanically connected to the same battery cell. However, other configurations are also possible for battery cell stacks. For example, a pair of circuit boards can mechanically and electrically contact the battery cells of the stack. For example, the next but one battery cell in the stack can be mechanically and electrically contacted by the same circuit board.
[0017] The electrical contacting of at least one battery cell of the battery by means of the circuit board is not intended to conduct the main load currents during charging and discharging of the battery cell via the circuit board. Rather, it is preferred that the electrical contacting via the circuit board serves to compensate for any differing electrical charge distribution of the batteries. This process is referred to as "balancing." Balancing is achieved in particular by an electronic circuit, which is usually part of a battery management system. It is intended to ensure the uniform electrical charge distribution of all galvanic cells within a battery that are similarly constructed but electrically different due to manufacturing tolerances and aging. In particular, in one embodiment of the battery, so-called passive balancing is implemented, in which an electrical resistor is connected in parallel to the battery cell if necessary. In another embodiment, so-called active balancing can be achieved via the electrical contact of the battery cell pole established by means of the circuit board and via corresponding electrical contact of the poles of other battery cells. In any case, it is optionally possible for the circuit board to have, in addition to the electrical contact of the respective battery cells, other parts of the electrical and / or electronic circuit for carrying out the balancing. In particular, the circuit board can have at least one electrical fuse for limiting the currents flowing during balancing and / or at least one controllable electrical switch, the closing of which can carry out the balancing. The electrical resistance required for passive balancing can also be provided on the circuit board.
[0018] The circuit board is preferably designed as a flexible circuit board. This has the advantage that a mechanically low-stress arrangement can be created. In this embodiment, the at least one mechanical contact region is preferably formed on an arm of the flexible circuit board, wherein the arm extends from a main part of the flexible circuit board to the mechanical contact region and wherein the mechanical contact region is / is pressed against a surface of the mechanically contacted battery cell by a holder of the contacting arrangement. This enables, in particular, a special embodiment in which only a part of the arm, which has the mechanical contact region, is in contact with the surface of the mechanically contacted battery cells. In contrast, the main part of the flexible circuit board can be located at a distance from the surface of the contacted battery cells. In this case, the extension of the arm is preferably angled at least twice, starting from the main part of the flexible circuit board, so that a displacement of the mechanical contact area relative to the main part of the flexible circuit board is possible without damaging the circuit board. Such a displacement can occur, for example, if the distances between adjacent battery cells change during charging and discharging of the battery or during other operation, for example, due to ambient temperature changes.
[0019] If the circuit board is designed as a flexible circuit board, the electrical contact for electrically contacting a pole of a battery cell can also be designed in a region of the circuit board that is movable relative to the main part of the circuit board due to the flexibility of the circuit board and in this way enables and / or facilitates the electrical contacting of the pole.
[0020] In one embodiment of the contacting arrangement or the battery, the holder is supported on a dimensionally stable element of the contacting arrangement and is designed to be removable from the dimensionally stable element. This makes it possible to easily remove the holder at any time after the battery has been put into operation. In particular, this embodiment makes it possible to gain access to the temperature sensor on the mechanical contact area of the circuit board after removing the holder. For example, a defective temperature sensor can be replaced in this way. The dimensionally stable part can, for example, be a holding frame that supports, fixes and / or holds various components of the contacting arrangement in position, in particular also in one of the embodiments of the battery with a stack of battery cells described above and below. For example, the holding frame can serve as a support for several of the holders, each of these holders pressing one of the mechanical contact areas against a surface of a mechanically contacted battery cell.
[0021] Alternatively or additionally, the holder can have an elastically deformable element and be arranged on the mechanical contact area such that the mechanical contact area is pressed against the surface of the mechanically contacted battery cells due to a deformation of the deformable element. Due to the elasticity of the elastic, deformable element, the mechanical contact of the mechanical contact area and thus the thermal contact of the temperature sensor is permanently ensured. In particular, the contact is maintained in the event of vibrations or the effects of thermal expansion or thermal contraction during temperature changes. The elastically deformable element can be a spring element (for example, a leaf spring or helical spring) and / or be made of an elastic material, for example, a foam.In addition, the holder can have a dimensionally stable region which, for example, forms a contact surface for the elastically deformable element. The elastically deformable element can be located on the side of the mechanical contact region or on the opposite side, as viewed from the dimensionally stable region. It is also possible for there to be an elastically deformable element on each side of the dimensionally stable region. A preferred embodiment is one in which the holder has a dimensionally stable region which engages with the dimensionally stable element (e.g. the holding frame), and an elastically deformable element made of an elastic material such as foam is located between the dimensionally stable region of the holder and the mechanical contact region of the circuit board. The element made of the elastic material is then in direct contact with the mechanical contact region of the circuit board. In this way, the forces acting on the mechanical contact area are low, meaning it is particularly protected against damage.
[0022] Embodiments and exemplary embodiments of the present invention are described below with reference to the accompanying drawings. The individual figures of the drawings show schematically, not to scale, the illustrated parts and components: Fig. 1 a battery with a plurality of battery cells and a circuit board, Fig. 2 the circuit board and two of the battery cells Fig. 1, Fig. 3 a partial view of an embodiment of a contacting arrangement for contacting battery cells, showing details of the mechanical contacting of a battery cell, Fig. 4 a plan view of an embodiment of a part of a printed circuit board with a mechanical contact area, Fig. 5 a partial representation of a further embodiment of a contacting arrangement for contacting battery cells, wherein details of the mechanical contacting of a battery cell are shown, Fig. 6 an electrical circuit with a plurality of PTC thermistors, which are arranged in particular on a common printed circuit board, wherein the PTC thermistors are used to detect a temperature increase in each case to an associated, in Fig. 6 not shown battery cell, and Fig. 7 a road vehicle with a high-voltage system, part of which is a battery.
[0023] In the figures, identical reference numerals designate not only structurally identical parts but also different configurations of a part. Furthermore, features of the illustrated embodiments may be omitted or combined with features of other embodiments.
[0024] The Fig. The battery 1 shown in Figure 1 has a plurality of battery cells 3 that form a stack. The structure and manufacture of such battery cell stacks is known and will not be described in detail here. The number of battery cells that form the stack can vary depending on the embodiment. The four battery cells 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d shown are merely a simplified exemplary embodiment. In addition, the battery 1 has at least one printed circuit board 4, which is preferably a flexible printed circuit board. The printed circuit board 4 serves to electrically contact at least one of the plurality of battery cells 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d and also serves to mechanically contact at least one of the plurality of battery cells 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d. In particular, all of the battery cells of at least one of the plurality of battery cells 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d of the stack can be contacted both mechanically and electrically by means of the printed circuit board.More generally, at least all battery cells in a stack of battery cells whose electrically contactable terminals are located on the same side of the stack can be contacted using the same circuit board. Preferably, at least these battery cells are also mechanically contacted by the same circuit board in order to thermally couple at least one temperature sensor per mechanical contact area to the respective battery cell.
[0025] Fig. Figure 2 shows a side view or sectional view of two battery cells 3a, 3b, each of which has a pole 5a, 5b to be electrically contacted at its top in Fig. 2. A printed circuit board 4 is also arranged on this side, which extends along the surfaces of the battery cells 3a, 3b. The battery cells 3a, 3b are part of a stack of battery cells, which contains further Fig. 2. In this case, it is preferred that the circuit board also extends along the surfaces of the other battery cells.
[0026] The circuit board 4, which is designed as a flexible circuit board, has an arm 14a, 14b for the mechanical contacting of each of the battery cells 3a, 3b, which arm 14a, 14b is angled at at least two points along its length from a main part 10 of the circuit board 4. The angled length shown in Fig. 2 is to be understood merely schematically. An angled course is also to be spoken of when the arm 14 is curved and / or the angle is less or more than 90 degrees. In this case, the at least two bends are in opposite directions, ie it is fundamentally possible that after two consecutive bends in opposite directions, the arm runs in a plane parallel to the main part 10. In the embodiment of the Fig. 2 (and also the Fig. 3 and Fig. 4) This is the case. However, the invention is not limited to this. For example, the surface of a battery cell may extend in a plane inclined to the main plane of the circuit board, and in this case, the free end of the arm preferably extends in this inclined plane.
[0027] Coming back to the concrete Fig. In the embodiment shown in Figure 2, each of the two arms 14a, 14b has a mechanical contact area 19a, 19b, which rests against the surface 23a, 23b of the respective battery cell 3a, 3b. A temperature sensor 7a, 7b is arranged at each of these contact areas 19a, 19b and is thus thermally coupled to the surface 23a, 23b.
[0028] Furthermore, the circuit board 4 has an electrical contact for each of the battery cells 3a, 3b, which Fig. 2 is not shown in detail. Via this electrical contact, the circuit board is electrically connected to the respective pole 5a, 5b of the battery cell 3a, 3b. Electrical lines, in particular conductor tracks, run on (i.e., on and / or in) the circuit board 4, via which the poles 5a, 5b and the temperature sensors 7a, 7b are each connected to other components of an associated electrical circuit. All or a number of these other components can also be arranged on the circuit board 4.
[0029] Fig. 3 shows similar to Fig. 2 a side view or sectional view, but only the area on the surface 23 of a single battery cell 3 is shown. The arm 14 of the circuit board 4 runs as in Fig. 2. Its mechanical contact area 19 is in contact with the surface 23. In the specifically illustrated embodiment, a temperature sensor 7 is arranged on the side of the mechanical contact area 19, with this side being opposite the surface 23 of the battery cells 3. To improve the thermal coupling of the temperature sensor 7, it is connected to the mechanical contact area 19 via a thermally conductive material 21. Optionally, a thermally conductive material can also be present between the mechanical contact area 19 and the surface 23. Fig. 3 further comprises a dimensionally stable element 11 on which a holder 13 is supported, for example a Fig. 3 The part of the holder 13 shown above is located in a recess of the dimensionally stable element 11, while the holder 13 presses the mechanical contact area 19 against the surface 23 via an elastically deformable element 15 arranged therebetween. The temperature sensor 7 is located, for example, in a recess of the elastically deformable element 15. A lower part of the holder 13 is wider than the recess of the dimensionally stable element 11 and thus enables support.
[0030] Fig. Figure 4 shows a design of the printed circuit board 4. The size of the printed circuit board 4 is merely for illustration purposes and is to be designed in practice according to the requirements of battery construction. The flexible printed circuit board 4 has a recess 8, forming an arm 14 which has a mechanical contact area 19 at its free end, in which the temperature sensor 7 is arranged. Fig. 4 is a top view. If the printed circuit board 4 shown is, for example, rotated 90 degrees to the horizontal of the Fig. 4 is rotated, a Fig. 2, Fig. 3 and Fig. 5 corresponding view. Therefore, the Fig. 4, as already explained, extend at least twice angled, so that the surface of the battery to be mechanically contacted is, for example, in a plane parallel to the plane of the figure of the Fig. 4 can be found.
[0031] In addition, the circuit board 4 has Fig. 4 has a printed circuit board region 6, which in the specifically illustrated embodiment is designed as an extension of the main part 10 of the printed circuit board 4 and extends to a free-end end region in which an electrical contact 2 for electrically contacting a pool of a battery cell is located. Instead of the design as an extension, similar to the mechanical contact region, the electrical contact can be provided on an arm or projection, which is partially surrounded by a recess in the printed circuit board. With the printed circuit board 4 of Fig. 4, for example, both mechanical and electrical contacting can be carried out using Fig. 2, each for a battery cell. The narrow design of the arm 14 and the circuit board area 6 enables low-stress mechanical contact of the battery cells for the main part 10 of the circuit board 4.
[0032] Fig. 5 shows a variant of the design from Fig. 3. Only the differences are explained. The holder 13 is designed as a holder that can be removed from the dimensionally stable element 11. For this purpose, the receptacle of the dimensionally stable element 11 for receiving the holder 13 has a recess 26, 27 on opposite side walls, into which a locking projection 24, 25 of the holder 13 extends in the mounted state of the holder 13 and prevents accidental disassembly of the holder 13. For example, from the side that corresponds to the viewing direction of the Fig. 5, the locking projections 24, 25 can be deformed towards the main axis of the holder 13 and in this way be released from the recesses 26, 27, so that the holder 13 in the illustration of the Fig. 5 can be removed upwards from the dimensionally stable element 11. As with the Fig. 1 to 4 and 6 are arbitrarily chosen as top, bottom, right and left and in practice do not have to correspond to the corresponding sides or orientations in the Earth's gravitational field. Fig. Figure 6 shows an electrical circuit with two circuit sections. The upper circuit section has a first temperature sensor, namely a thermistor Rn with a negative thermal coefficient. The thermistor Rn can be connected to an evaluation device via terminals 28, 29 in a known manner. The thermistor Rn is arranged, for example, on the same circuit board as the other thermistors to be described below. Fig. 6. The first temperature sensor (the thermistor Rn) makes it possible, for example, to measure a temperature characteristic of the entire battery at a suitable location on the circuit board. The lower circuit section comprises a series connection of several temperature sensors, namely thermistors Rp1, ... Rpi, each of which has a positive temperature coefficient. The index i runs from 1 up to the total number of thermistors Rp connected in series. Each of the thermistors Rp can be thermally coupled to one of the battery cells. If even the temperature of just one of the battery cells rises significantly, the electrical resistance of the thermistor Rp thermally coupled to this battery cell increases, so that the electrical resistance of the entire circuit of thermistors increases accordingly. This can be evaluated in a conventional manner via the electrical connections 30, 31.In particular, at least those in . Fig. 6 schematically shown electrical lines and connections 28 to 31 on the circuit board. Therefore, if, for example, in the Fig. 2 shown arrangement of the temperature sensor 7a of the thermistor Rp1 from Fig. 6 and the temperature sensor 7b is the thermistor Rp2 from Fig. 6, for example, the electrical connection extends from the thermistor Rp1 to the thermistor Rp2 along the arm 14a to the main part 10 of the circuit board 4 and from this main part 10 of the circuit board 4 via the arm 14b to the thermistor Rp2. The same applies to the other electrical connections between different thermistors Rp.
[0033] The Fig. The road vehicle 40 shown in Figure 7 has a high-voltage system 42. Components of the high-voltage system 42 are, in addition to a battery 1, for example the Fig. 1, in particular the usual components known from motor vehicle construction, such as electrical connections and parts of an electric traction system. As an example, Fig. 7 shows two traction units 43, 44, each of which, for example, has at least one electric motor to generate traction. In general, at least one drive train can be part of an electric traction system of a road vehicle configured as a high-voltage system.
