[0001] The invention relates to a device for splitting wood with a frame to which a vertically movable splitting knife and a counter plate serving as a support for the wood to be split are attached, wherein the splitting knife movement defines a splitting axis which coincides with a vertical axis of the device, and wherein the device is equipped with at least one arm designed as a wood-splitting holding or catching element for supporting wood splits that tip to the side after a splitting operation has been carried out and in particular for preventing them from tipping over uncontrollably in a way that would endanger the operator.
