Description

Field of the invention

[0001] The present invention relates to a neurodrill template trainer system for training a drilling procedure in neurosurgery, and more particularly for providing a constraint on flat and curved bones to evaluate the performance of the procedure. Background and prior art of the invention

[0002] Neurosurgery is the newest surgical specialty, requiring effective training and education to develop precise skills. Drilling is an important task performed to access the deeper structures of the brain by removing the bone flaps of the outer skull. During various surgical procedures, drilling is also performed on internal bones and is usually performed under magnification. Neurosurgical drilling tools have evolved significantly from hand-operated drills to high-speed electric / pneumatic drills. These high-speed drills should be operated with high precision and control. Any error in operating the drill can lead to devastating consequences, as they are forced against the surface at rates of hundreds of thousands of revolutions per minute. Therefore, effective training is required to prevent drill bits from slipping and tearing the meninges and to protect critical structures from damage.

[0003] Standard drilling practice is performed with the naked eye on flat and curved bones, and advanced training is conducted under a microscope with defined magnification. A defined workstation for performing the drilling task is essential for precise training in neurosurgery. Therefore, training requires operation in a narrow and restricted area to limit hand and tool movements. There is no standard procedure for marking and evaluation for drilling in neurosurgery.

[0004] US 5954687 A provides a burr hole ring with catheter for use as an injection port, relates to a burr hole ring with a catheter for use as an injection port, and comprises a modified burr hole ring adapted to engage the skull at a burr hole drilled therein. The interior of the burr hole ring defines a fluid reservoir accessible by a needle or stylet inserted through a septum positioned over the top of the burr hole ring. The reservoir is in fluid communication with the central lumen of a catheter. The assembly comprises a fluid flow path suitable for transferring fluids to or from a selected location on, near, or in the brain. A filter layer may be provided to prevent contamination of the drug infusion site.

[0005] US 20100041004 A1 provided a surgical burr drilling simulator relating to a system, method, and apparatus for simulating a medical procedure, including a haptic mechanism controllable to provide feedback to a user operating a medical device. In one embodiment, a pair of three-degree-of-freedom haptic devices are coupled to provide six-degree-of-freedom measurements and force / torque feedback to the user. The six-degree-of-freedom haptic device may be configured to provide different resolutions for different degrees of freedom depending on simulation requirements. In one embodiment, a load cell is used to provide higher resolution to an extent determined to be more critical for realistic simulation.

[0006] US 6328565 B1 disclosed a training method and device for dental drill identification, which relates to a drill block adapted for identifying and training dental personnel and utilizes a block and a cover. The block has a surface with a number of holes sized to hold a number of dental drills. Each hole has indicia representing characteristics of the drill disposed in the hole. The characteristics include drill sizes and shapes, colors, grits, part numbers, and the like. By placing the characteristics of each drill near the drill itself, individuals can readily learn and / or become accustomed to the drill characteristics, making drill identification easier in the future.

[0007] US 4821716 A discloses drilling an opening into the skull, and relates to an apparatus and method for drilling a hole in a human skull at an angle of substantially 90° to a plane defined by a tangent to the surface of the skull at the opening. The apparatus comprises a first tubular guide for directing a drill at the proper angle, the first guide being supported on the skull by a plurality of leg members. The invention further comprises a hand-operated rotary drill device adapted for insertion into the tubular guide. A second guide of reduced diameter relative to the first tubular guide is insertable into the first guide upon completion of the drill hole to allow entry of a catheter into the ventricular portion of the patient's brain. The method of the invention comprises positioning the first drill guide on the patient's skull, inserting the rotary drill into it to prepare a drill hole extending at an angle of substantially 90° to a plane tangential to the surface, replacing the drill with a catheter guide insertable into the drill guide, and inserting a catheter through the second guide through the drill hole and into a ventricular portion of the patient's brain.

[0008] US 5,578,036 A discloses a substantially circular template used in neurosurgical procedures. US 7,827,701 B2 discloses a triangular and a circular template used in neurosurgical procedures. US 2012 / 0 289 964 A1 discloses a device for use in neurosurgical procedures.

[0009] However, the current state of the art shows that trainers for surgical high-speed drilling under the microscope are lacking.

[0010] Thus, the present invention provides novel templates for providing a closed, confined environment for practicing drill training under a neurosurgical microscope. Said template is provided with markings for drill holes in a defined, confined area and with different template angles to accommodate the surface of flat and curved bones. Object of the invention
