Abstract
A magnetless and brushless, internally excited synchronous machine (202) comprising: - a rotor (102) comprising: - a first set of windings (104) configured to generate a rotor magnetic field, wherein the first set of windings are direct current (DC) field windings; and - a second set of windings (106) electrically coupled to the first set of windings (104), wherein the second set of windings are polyphase alternating current (AC) receiver windings; - a stator (108) comprising: - a third set of windings (110), wherein the third set of windings are polyphase alternating current (AC) transmitter windings;and- a fourth set of windings (112) arranged to generate a stator magnetomotive force (MMF), wherein the fourth set of windings are multiphase alternating current (AC) field windings,- wherein the third set of windings (110) and the fourth set of windings (112) are designed to receive alternating current (AC) from at least one current source,- wherein alternating current (AC) is induced in the second set of windings (106) on the basis of the alternating current (AC) supplied to the third set of windings (110),- wherein the alternating current (AC) induced in the second set of windings (106) is rectified and transmitted as direct current (DC) to the first set of windings (104) to internally excite the synchronous machine (202), and- wherein an alignment of the rotor magnetic field with the stator MMF upon excitation of the synchronous machine (202) Rotation of the rotor (102) causes;
