Description

[0001] The invention relates to a method for painting a component of a vehicle brake, in particular for painting a component of a commercial vehicle brake, wherein the component has a recess which extends in the direction of a longitudinal axis and which has an inner surface which is to be kept free of paint.

[0002] Vehicle brakes, especially commercial vehicle brakes, are exposed to environmental influences throughout their service life and are therefore at risk of corrosion. To ensure sufficient operational reliability, vehicle brakes, especially commercial vehicle brakes, must typically demonstrate their corrosion resistance through testing measures such as salt water spray tests.

[0003] To improve the corrosion resistance of vehicle brake components, they are coated with corrosion-inhibiting paints. One common method is cathodic or cataphoretic dip painting (CDP), an electrochemical process in which paint particles are deposited on the component in an immersion bath under the influence of an electric field.

[0004] The invention relates in particular to such cataphoretic dip coating processes, but is also applicable to other processes.

[0005] The invention relates in particular to the painting of brake callipers of commercial vehicle brakes, but is in principle also applicable to all components that have recesses with inner surfaces that must be kept free of paint. Description page 2 (fair copy) and 2a

[0006] The recesses that are to be kept free of paint, for example, should not contain any paint because they have to adhere to narrow dimensional tolerances, for example as guide holes that would be impaired by painting. In the prior art, it was therefore necessary either to remove any paint from the recesses after painting or to close the recesses from the outside. This was achieved by attaching operating devices, such as sealing washers, to the front side and clamping them axially against the front side. A disadvantage of these attempts was that the work involved was high and the sealing washers attached from the outside always covered part of the end faces of the components, so that after the painting process and the removal of the operating devices to close the recess, there were unpainted areas on the front side that then did not have the required corrosion resistance.

[0007] DE 10 2019 004 282 A1 is considered the closest prior art. This document discloses a mask for masking an end section of a cylinder bore in a crankcase during thermal coating. The use of the mask in a vehicle brake is not disclosed.

[0008] The invention is therefore dedicated to the task of improving the corrosion resistance of components of a vehicle brake by providing an improved method for painting them.

[0009] The invention solves the underlying problem by the method described above comprising the following steps: Providing the component, inserting a sealing plug into the recess of the component, wherein the sealing plug has a sealing surface, and the sealing surface within the recess, relative to the longitudinal axis, is brought into sealing contact with the inner surface in the radial direction, and painting the component after the sealing plug has been inserted

[0010] The invention follows the approach that the sealing plug exerts its sealing effect exclusively inside the recess by radially engaging the inner surface of the recess when inserted. In particular, according to the invention, there is no axial sealing against the end-face outer surfaces of the recess. This further development of the sealing plug and the concentration on sealing in the radial direction on the inner surface of the recess prevents the creation of so-called blind spots on the outer surface of the vehicle brake during painting. Corrosion cannot subsequently occur at such spots, thereby significantly improving the corrosion resistance of the vehicle brake components.

[0011] The method is accordingly advantageously further developed in that the component has an end face into which the recess is made, and the sealing plug is inserted into the recess in such a way that it is spaced from the end face in the inserted state.

[0012] In In a further preferred embodiment, the end face described above is a first end face, and the component further comprises a second end face, wherein the recess extends from the first end face to the second end face through the component, wherein the component is preferably a brake caliper, and the sealing plug is inserted into the recess such that, in the inserted state, it is spaced apart from the first end face and from the second end face.

[0013] InIn another preferred embodiment, a sliding sleeve is arranged inside the recess. This sliding sleeve has a sliding surface, which in turn forms part of the inner surface of the recess. Typically, such sliding sleeves are pressed into the recesses. The method is advantageous over the prior art because the pressing in of the sliding sleeves can now also take place before painting. The sealing plug reliably prevents paint from penetrating the recess and unintentionally depositing on the sliding sleeve.

[0014] In a preferred development, the sealing plug is inserted in such a way that, in the inserted state, it rests sealingly against the sliding surface of the sliding sleeve, preferably over its entire surface, with at least one sealing surface.

[0015] If the sealing plug has several sealing surfaces, these are collectively referred to as a sealing surface arrangement.

[0016] In a further preferred embodiment, the sealing surface is a first sealing surface, and the sealing plug further comprises at least one second sealing surface which is arranged on the sealing plug at a distance from the first sealing surface in the longitudinal direction, wherein the sealing plug is inserted in such a way that it is also brought into sealing contact with the inner surface with the second sealing surface within the recess, in the radial direction with respect to the longitudinal direction.

[0017] Further preferably, the sliding sleeve is a first sliding sleeve, and a second sliding sleeve is further arranged inside the recess, said second sliding sleeve having a second sliding surface that forms part of the inner surface of the recess. Preferably, the sealing plug is then inserted such that, in the inserted state, it rests sealingly against the second sliding surface of the second sliding sleeve, preferably over its entire surface.

[0018] InIn further preferred embodiments, the recess has one or more further sliding sleeves, and the sealing plug is designed such that it also rests against those sliding surfaces, preferably over its entire surface, when inserted.

[0019] Alternatively or in addition to sealing directly on the sliding surfaces of the sliding sleeves, a preferred embodiment of the method provides that the first and second sealing surfaces of the sealing plug are spaced apart from one another in such a way that they enclose the sliding sleeve or sliding sleeves between them.

[0020] Preferably, in the inserted state, at least one of the sealing surfaces lies sealingly against an end section of the sliding sleeves in the direction of the longitudinal axis.

[0021] In a further preferred embodiment, at least one of the sealing surfaces adjacent to the sliding sleeves, axially spaced or adjacent, lies sealingly against the recess.

[0022] In a further preferred embodiment of the invention, the sealing plug has a base body made of an elastically deformable material, preferably silicone or a silicone-containing material. This choice of material offers the advantage that the sealing plug has very good elastic deformation properties and can also be easily cleaned and reprocessed for reuse after use.

[0023] Further preferably, the base body of the sealing plug is designed as a hollow body with a longitudinal axis and is preferably open at one or both ends in the direction of its longitudinal axis. The hollow body design facilitates the radial compression of the sealing plug and thus its insertion into the recess. An open sealing plug, particularly if it is open in both directions, improves the flow of the coating agent in a dipping process and helps prevent unwanted carryover of coating agent and / or other liquids necessary for the painting process into subsequent processing steps, such as subsequent dipping baths. The (coating and / or other) agent can flow through the sealing plug, while the inner surface of the recess, which must be kept clear, is still protected by the sealing plug. The sealing plug preferably has a taper around the recess, particularly preferably a conical taper. The taper prevents unwanted accumulation of fluid in the area of the recess and thus improves its drainage.

[0024] In a further preferred embodiment, the sealing plug is stiffened in the region of at least one of its ends, wherein the sealing plug preferably has a material thickening and / or a support ring, and wherein, during the insertion step, the stiffened end is preferably also inserted into the recess. This improves the hold of the sealing plug within the recess during the dipping process or during painting. As mentioned at the beginning, the invention demonstrates its advantages particularly in dipping painting processes, but the protective effect of the sealing plug also occurs in spray painting processes.

[0025] In a further preferred embodiment, the method further comprises the steps: Removing the sealing plug after the painting step, cleaning the sealing plug of paint residues, and preparing the sealing plug for reuse in a further pass of the process.

[0026] The reuse of operating materials, such as the sealing plug described here, contributes to the sustainability of the manufacturing process and makes a contribution to environmental compatibility.

[0027] The invention is described above in a first aspect with reference to the method according to the invention

[0028] The invention is described in more detail below with reference to preferred embodiments and the accompanying figures. Herein: Fig. 1 shows a component of a vehicle brake, prepared for painting in the method according to the invention, Figs. 2-7 show preferred embodiments of the sealing plug according to the invention for use in the method according to the invention, and Fig. 8 shows a schematic flow diagram of an embodiment of the method.

[0029] Fig. 1 shows a section of a commercial vehicle 1, a component 3 of a braking system of the commercial vehicle 1, namely a brake caliper. In the present exemplary embodiment, the component 3 is manufactured as a cast part, but could also be a component manufactured in another way. It has a base body 4, into which several recesses 5 are made. The recesses 5 are designed, for example, as bolt guides for receiving and linearly guiding bolts for brake pad adjustment. In the Fig. 1In the left part of the component 3, a sealing plug 7 is inserted into one of the recesses 5. A handling section 8 protrudes from the recess 5. One or more recesses 10, in this case two opposite ones, are provided on the handling section 8, by means of which the handling section 8 can be compressed to facilitate insertion and removal of the sealing plug 7 into and from the recess 5.

[0030] The sealing plug 7 is held in the recess 5 by means of a clamping force in the radial direction, essentially frictionally. This will be discussed in more detail in the following figures using several different embodiments.

[0031] The Fig. 2-7show various embodiments of the sealing plug 7, which agree with one another in essential basic principles. All sealing plugs have a substantially cylindrical basic shape and are made of a silicone-containing material, in particular silicone. The sealing plugs 7 each have a sealing surface arrangement 11, which can be composed differently in the different variants. What the sealing surface arrangements 11 have in common, however, is that, due to a slight oversize of the sealing plugs 7, they bear sealingly in the radial direction against an inner surface 9 of the recess 5 and exert a clamping force in the radial direction relative to a longitudinal axis L, which holds the sealing plug 7 frictionally in the recess 5.

[0032] For all embodiments, the recess 5 extends from a first end face 19 to a second end face 21 through the component 3, and the sealing plugs 7 are inserted into the recess 5 in such a way that the sealing plugs 7 do not rest on the end faces 19, 21 on both end faces 19, 21, but are spaced apart from them.

[0033] The sealing plugs 7a-7e according to the Fig. 2-6 each have a hollow cylindrical base body 25 which has at least one end a passage opening 17 or at least one radial recess 29 for draining painting agent, in particular to prevent unwanted carryover of painting agent and / or other liquids necessary for the painting process into subsequent processing steps.

[0034] The sealing plugs 7a-7e according to the Fig. 2-6At the end opposite the handling section 8, they have a reinforcement in the form of a material thickening 27. On the side of the handling section, one or more engagement elements, for example tabs, are preferably provided to facilitate the removal of the sealing plug after painting. Preferably, the sealing plug has one or more tabs in the region of the handling section, which are designed to facilitate the removal of the sealing plug after painting.

[0035] In all exemplary embodiments, at least one sliding sleeve, namely a first sliding sleeve 13a and a second sliding sleeve 13b, is inserted, in particular pressed, into the recess 5. The sliding sleeves 13a, 13b each have a sliding surface 15, which forms part of the inner surface 9 of the recess 5.

[0036] The following section discusses the design differences and different functions of the various sealing plugs 7a-7f.

[0037] The sealing plug 7a according to Fig. 2has a plurality of sealing surfaces 11a-11e, which are designed to seal the recess 5. Thus, the sealing plug 7a has a total of three sealing surfaces 11a, 11c, 11e, which bear sealingly directly against the inner surface 9 of the recess 5, wherein the sealing surfaces 11a, 11e each bear next to the sliding sleeves 13a, 13b on the inner surface 9 of the recess 5 and enclose the sliding sleeves 13a, 13b between them. The sealing surface 11a bears directly adjacent to the sliding sleeve 13a, while the oppositely arranged sealing surface 11e is arranged at an axial distance from the sliding sleeve 13b. However, a different design is entirely conceivable, as will also become apparent from the further exemplary embodiments.Between the sealing surfaces 11a and 11b and between 11d and 11e, at least one support surface is preferably arranged, in particular aligned perpendicular to the sealing surfaces, which support itself on the sliding sleeve and position the sealing plug within the recess 5.

[0038] The sliding sleeve 13a is further in sealing engagement with a sealing surface 11b, specifically in an end section 23a of the sliding sleeve 13a. Likewise, a sealing surface 11d of the sealing surface arrangement 11 is in sealing engagement with the sliding sleeve 13b in an end section 23b of the sliding sleeve 13b.

[0039] Between the sealing surfaces 11b, 11d, a further sealing surface 11c is arranged, which also ensures individual sealing of the sliding sleeves 13a, 13b in respective cavities with the sealing surface 11a on the one hand and with the sealing surface 11e on the other hand.

[0040] The sealing plug 7b according to Fig. 3differs in this respect from the sealing plug according to Fig. 2 that the sealing surface arrangement 11 has a slightly smaller number of sealing surfaces. The sliding sleeves 13a, 13b are also enclosed by two terminal sealing surfaces 11a, 11f, with the sealing surface 11a as in Fig. 2 is designed and arranged, while the sealing surface 11f is in sealing contact with a chamfer 31 in the recess 5. As can be seen from Fig. 3 As can also be seen, the chamfer is slightly recessed relative to the end face 19 of the component 3, so that in this embodiment, too, the sealing plug, and in particular the sealing surfaces 11a-11f, are spaced from both end faces 19, 21. The wooden cylindrical base body 25 according to Fig. 3 is uniformly formed throughout on its inside, has Fig. 3 left end section has a radial recess 29 for the removal of paint.

[0041] Adjacent to the sealing surface 11a, the sealing plug 7b has an additional sealing surface 11b, which in an end section 23a is in sealing contact with the sliding sleeve 13a, as shown in Fig. 2 already described.

[0042] The Fig. 4 The sealing plug 7c shown is, with regard to the arrangement of its sealing surfaces 11a-11f, corresponding to the sealing plug 7b according to Fig. 3 Therefore, to avoid repetition, reference is made to the above explanations regarding identical reference numerals. In contrast to the sealing plug 7b of the Figure 3 the sealing plug 7c has a Fig. 4 The left end, i.e., the end opposite the handling section 8, has a support ring 32 for additional stiffening. The support ring 32 stabilizes the base body 25, preferably in addition to the material thickening 27, or alternatively, and increases the radial clamping effect within the recess 5.

[0043] The sealing plugs 7a to 7c protect on both sides of the recess 5 against the penetration of paint up to the sliding sleeves 13a, 13b.

[0044] As a variant of these embodiments, which are particularly suitable for complete immersion of the component 3 in a painting bath, or for all-round painting of the component 3 using other methods, Fig. 5 a sealing plug 7d is presented, which is also suitable for such processes in which the entire component 3 is to be painted.

[0045] The sealing plug 7d has a sealing surface arrangement 11 formed on the side of the sealing plug 7d opposite the handling section 8, where it has a sealing surface 11a and two further sealing surfaces 11g, 11h. The sealing surface 11a serves for additional sealing, as a slip-preventing device, and / or for centering. The sealing surface arrangement 11 further has the sealing surfaces 11g, 11h, by means of which the sealing plug 7d primarily and directly seals against the sliding surfaces 15.

[0046] From the right side, an open gap 33 remains in the recess 5 after insertion of the sealing plug 7d, so that material could theoretically penetrate there, but not up to the sliding surfaces 15. The sealing plug 7d is also spaced from both end faces 19, 21, even when it is fully inserted.

[0047] The Fig. 6The sealing plug 7e shown differs in this respect from the previous embodiments of the Figures 1 to 4 that the base body 25 of the sealing plug 7e not only rests against sliding sleeves 13a, 13b in an end area, but that the sealing surface arrangement 11, as in Fig. 5 each has sealing surfaces 11g, 11h which, preferably over the entire length of the sliding sleeves 13a, 13b, i.e. over the entire surface, are in sealing contact with the sliding surfaces 15 thereof and in this way prevent an unwanted coating of the sliding surfaces 15 within the recess 5. On the side of the sealing plug 7e facing the handling section 8, the sealing surface arrangement 11, in contrast to Fig. 5 again has a conical sealing surface 11f sealing the chamfer 31. As in Fig. 2 the sealing plug 7e has a passage opening 17 at its end opposite the handling section 8.

[0048] While in the Figures 2 to 6Each one-piece sealing plug 7a-7e is shown in Fig. 7A sealing plug 7f is presented, which is formed from a first plug part 35a and a second plug part 35b. The plug parts 35a, 35b are operatively connected to one another by clamping means, for example by means of a spindle 37 and a clamping nut 39, which is supported against a disk 43, and can generate a clamping force by means of the clamping means. The clamping movement is transmitted via sleeves 41, 42 embedded in the plug parts 35a, 35b. Clamping the sealing plug 7f within the recess 5 causes the plug parts 35a, 35b, made of an elastically deformable material, in particular a silicone-containing material or silicone, to be moved against the sliding sleeves 13a, 13b and to be compressed in the axial direction when a sufficient clamping resistance is reached. The axial compression movement causes the material to deflect in the radial direction, which then generates the radial sealing and clamping force according to the invention within the recess 5. The sealing plug 7f according to . Fig. 7 is spaced apart from the two end faces 19, 21 and does not touch them. Thus, the sealing plug 7f can also be used according to Fig. 7 the component 3 can be completely painted from the outside, while the recess 5 or its inner surface 9, including the sliding surfaces 15 of the sliding sleeves 13a, 13b, can be kept completely free of paint.

[0049] Using the procedure scheme according to Fig. 8 Finally, the use of sealing plugs 7 according to the Figures 1 to 7 in the process according to the invention.

[0050] A first step 101 represents the start of the method. At the start of the method 101, in a step 103, a component of a vehicle brake, in particular a brake caliper for a commercial vehicle brake, and a sealing plug 7, for example one of the sealing plugs 7a-7f, are provided.

[0051] In a next method step 105, the sealing plug 7 is inserted into a recess 5 of the component 3, wherein the component 3 has an inner surface 9 that must be kept free of paint. The sealing plug 7 is inserted such that its sealing surface arrangement 11, which has at least one sealing surface 11a-11h, bears radially against the inner surface 9 within the recess 5, thereby sealing the recess 5 in a paint-tight manner. In a next step 107, the component 3 is then painted. During painting, the sealing plug 7 is held frictionally in place by the clamping force of the material elastically deformed in the recess 5.

[0052] After painting, the sealing plug 7 is removed from the recess 5, for example by compressing the sealing plug 7 at its handling section 8, whereby the base body 25 of the sealing plug 7 at least partially collapses and can be pulled out of the recess 5. If a sealing plug 7f according to Fig. 7 is used, the radial tension can be reduced by loosening the clamping devices 37, 39 until removal is possible.

[0053] After the sealing plug 7 has been removed from the component 3, the component can be passed on in the production process and the process can be terminated in a step 111.

[0054] However, for the sealing plug 7, the process does not have to be finished at this point: In a next process step 113, the sealing plug 7 is preferably cleaned of paint residues, so that in a subsequent process step 115, the sealing plug 7 thus prepared can be made available again for a process run and fed back to process step 105.

[0055] As long as the sealing plug 7 remains free of damage and its elastic deformability is sufficiently maintained, the sealing plug can be used many times in the process according to the invention. List of reference symbols (part of the description)
