Description

[0001] The invention relates to a rinsing station with at least one movable discharge unit and to a method for rinsing at least one movable discharge unit using the rinsing station for a device for producing a three-dimensional object from solidifiable material in a construction space, which object can be discharged from a discharge nozzle of the discharge unit in a working position, wherein fluid solidifiable material can be discharged from the discharge unit in a rinsing position in a rinsing process, according to the preamble of claim 1. Devices and methods are known from EP 1 886 793 A1, WO 2012 / 171647 A1 and WO 2013 / 017278 A1 with which three-dimensional objects from solidifiable material are produced in a construction space.Materials that are either already fluid in their initial state or can be liquefied under the influence of elevated temperature are produced by dispensing droplets onto a slide using at least one dispensing unit with a dispensing nozzle. Either the dispensing unit and / or the slide are movable, thus allowing the sequential and additive application of fluid material to the slide. After being applied to the slide, the material is then solidified by lowering the temperature, thus forming the three-dimensional object layer by layer.

[0002] Comparable devices are known from the documents US 2017 / 0050388 A1, US 2019 / 0118258 A1 or US 2015 / 0343688 A1.

[0003] US 2020 / 061920 A1 discloses auxiliary material handling units for additive manufacturing (AM), methods for handling auxiliary material of an AM system, and active printhead cleaning devices. An auxiliary material handling unit (AMHU) comprises a material displacer having at least one inlet opening through which auxiliary material is received from an AM system, wherein the material displacer displaces the auxiliary material away from the at least one inlet opening. A method for handling auxiliary material of an AM system comprises receiving auxiliary material from the AM system in a material displacer having at least one inlet opening, wherein the material displacer displaces the auxiliary material away from the at least one inlet opening. The displaced auxiliary material can be collected in a collecting container. An active printhead cleaning device actively cleans auxiliary material from an AM printhead and feeds the auxiliary material to an AMHU.An AM process using multiple print heads includes depositing material with a first print head to produce a part, and depositing auxiliary material with a second print head during the deposition of material with the first print head. The deposited auxiliary material can be picked up and displaced by a material displacer having at least one inlet opening.

[0004] A particular disadvantage of the known devices and methods, however, is that the materials used can be thermally damaged during longer breaks in the manufacturing process. In order to prevent material from becoming embedded in the object during the manufacturing process and thus potentially negatively affecting the visual and material-specific properties, two methods are currently used to discharge material, or possibly degraded material, from the discharge unit, in particular its discharge nozzle. Firstly, material can be flushed out of the discharge unit into a waste area inside or outside the build space until freshly melted material is available at the discharge nozzle. Secondly, material can be incorporated into a sacrificial object in order not to exceed the residence time of the critical material in the discharge unit. The incorporation of the material into the sacrificial object is timed in such a way that as little degraded material as possible is created by not exposing the material to high temperatures for too long.

[0005] Both solutions are used in commercially available devices and processes, but have the disadvantage that they only discharge material without simultaneously counteracting potential contamination of system-critical components, such as the discharge nozzle, which shortens the service life of these components. Material residues can be transferred from the discharge nozzle to the component, which in turn can negatively impact its material-specific and visual properties. At least with the sacrificial object method, there is also increased material consumption, which increases the build time and thus also increases production costs.

[0006] The invention is therefore based on the object of specifying a rinsing station with at least one movable discharge unit and a method for rinsing at least one movable discharge unit using the rinsing station for a device for producing a three-dimensional object from solidifiable material in a construction space, by means of which the production process is optimised and in which material is always provided at the outlet of the discharge unit, while at the same time increasing the service life of system-critical components.

[0007] This object is achieved by a rinsing station having the features of claim 1 and by a method having the features of claim 11.

[0008] The rinsing station and method according to the invention have the advantage that the discharge nozzle of the discharge unit is maintained in a condition suitable for production throughout the entire manufacturing process of the object(s). This allows for any material change at any time during production, thereby avoiding delays in manufacturing. Furthermore, at least partially degraded material can be disposed of as needed to avoid or prevent undesirable material quality and thus qualitative defects in the object(s). At the same time, the quality of the material being processed can be increased. In principle, however, a material change is possible at any time by rinsing the discharge unit.

[0009] If necessary, the temperature of the discharged material can be influenced so that it is discharged at a predetermined temperature, for example, to optimize or, preferably, reduce the volume occupied by the discharged or disposed material. From an environmental perspective, this has the advantage of reducing the volume of material to be disposed of.

[0010] For the productivity and cost-efficiency of the overall system, it is advantageous that the connection of the discharge nozzle with the opening of the closure component and the connection of the closure component to the disposal container are designed to create a condition in the disposal container that reduces the volume of the discharged fluid, solidifiable material. This condition is thermally optimized or achieved by pressure.

[0011] Advantageously, the discharge nozzle and the opening of the closure component have a coordinated geometry designed to reduce adhesion of discharged material to the discharge nozzle and to enable a largely thread-free separation of the discharge nozzle from the closure component. The coordinated geometry of the discharge nozzle and the opening of the closure component consists of suitable geometric shapes, advantageously conical shapes.

[0012] Further improvements result from the features of the subclaims.

[0013] With the preferred use of multiple discharge units, the control system is designed to advantageously simultaneously enable the production of the three-dimensional object by means of at least one discharge unit in the build space and the discharge of the fluid, solidifiable material, which may already be partially degraded, into the disposal container by means of at least one discharge unit. This advantageously reduces the construction time of the objects as well as the residence time of the material.

[0014] A first design of the rinsing station, which is advantageous for the service life of the entire system and for the material-specific properties of the material discharged during the construction process, provides that when the discharge nozzle is separated from the opening of the closure component of the disposal container, any material still adhering to the discharge nozzle is simultaneously removed from the disposal container. This contributes favorably to the quality of the material contained in the object and thus to the quality of the manufactured objects.

[0015] A design of the rinsing station which is advantageous for the productivity of the overall system in order to shorten the production time provides that the first movement mechanism is designed to remove the discharge unit from the construction space and, after discharging the fluid, solidifiable material outside the construction space, to introduce the discharge unit into the construction space.

[0016] A design of the rinsing station that is advantageous for the productivity and cost-efficiency of the overall system provides for the closure component to have multiple openings and be designed to allow multiple discharges of fluid, solidifiable material into the disposal container. This also advantageously reduces the construction times of the objects to be manufactured.

[0017] Further advantageous configurations of the rinsing station for the productivity and cost-efficiency of the overall system provide for the storage of several disposal containers in a container magazine that can be integrated into the device. Using a separating unit that can be integrated into the device, the disposal containers can be separated and transferred to a disposal container holder, which is connected to a support arm arranged on a pivoting and linear movement mechanism that can be integrated into the device. The second movement mechanism comprises the pivoting and linear movement mechanism. This advantageously optimizes disposal in terms of both time and quantity.

[0018] An additional design of the rinsing station that is advantageous for the function as well as productivity and cost efficiency of the overall system provides that the closure component is integrated into the disposal container holder.

[0019] A design of the rinsing station that is advantageous for the function as well as the productivity and cost efficiency of the overall system preferably provides that the first movement mechanism comprises a lifting mechanism that forms a free space under the discharge nozzle, which allows the disposal container to be placed in different positions under the discharge nozzle with the pivoting and linear movement mechanism, corresponding to the number of openings of the closure component.

[0020] A design of the rinsing station that is advantageous for the operation and maintainability of the overall system preferably provides that the pivoting and linear movement mechanism can be arranged on a pivotable cover plate of the device.

[0021] An additional design of the rinsing station that is advantageous for the productivity and cost efficiency of the overall system preferably provides that completely filled disposal containers can be transported to a disposal facility connected to the device by means of the pivoting and linear movement mechanism.

[0022] A design of the rinsing station and the method that is advantageous for the service life of the entire system and for the material-specific properties of the material discharged during the construction process provides that when the discharge nozzle of the discharge unit is separated from the opening of the closure component of the disposal container, any remaining material discharge is simultaneously wiped off at the discharge nozzle.

[0023] An advantageous embodiment of the method for the productivity and cost efficiency of the overall system provides that when using a closure component with several openings, a multiple discharge of fluid solidifiable material is carried out into the disposal container.

[0024] According to the method, when using several discharge units, the production of the three-dimensional object can advantageously take place simultaneously by means of at least one discharge unit in the construction space and the discharge of the fluid solidifiable material can take place by means of at least one discharge unit in the rinsing position.

[0025] The invention will now be explained in more detail using exemplary embodiments. Description of preferred embodiments

[0026] Before describing the invention in detail, it should be noted that it is not limited to the specific components of the device and the specific method steps, as these components and methods may vary. The terms used herein are intended solely to describe particular embodiments and are not intended to be limiting. Furthermore, when the singular or indefinite articles are used in the description or claims, this also refers to the plural of these elements, unless the overall context clearly indicates otherwise.

[0027] Fig. 1 shows a device 1 for producing a three-dimensional object 13 from solidifiable material in a build space 14. Materials which, under the influence of elevated temperature, are either already present as a fluid in their initial state or can be liquefied, are produced by dispensing droplets by means of at least one dispensing unit 2 with a dispensing nozzle 12 onto a specimen slide 15 arranged below the dispensing unit 2, wherein either the dispensing unit 2 and / or the specimen slide 15 is movable and thus allows the sequential and additive application of fluid material to the specimen slide 15. After its application to the specimen slide 15, the material is then solidified, e.g., by lowering the temperature, and in this way forms the three-dimensional object 13 layer by layer.

[0028] The device 1 may also be capable of discharging the material drop by drop, but also of discharging it in strand form from the discharge unit 2.

[0029] The Fig. 1 The device 1 shown has three discharge units 2, each of which can be in a working position or a rinsing position, and with which, in the working positions, either a selective discharge of material by one discharge unit 2 or a simultaneous discharge by several discharge units 2 downwards into the construction space 14 (not further designated or shown) and onto one or more object carriers 15 (not further designated or shown) located therein is possible. If necessary, a support material can also be discharged by one of the discharge units 2.

[0030] Also shown are parts of a rinsing station, such as a support arm 5 and a disposal container 6, which can be arranged, for example, on a pivoting cover 3 of the device 1 and serve to discharge fluid, solidifiable material from a discharge unit 2, which is in a rinsing position, into disposal containers 6 in a rinsing process, which in turn can be temporarily stored in a container magazine 4 before use. The fluid, solidifiable material can be at least partially degraded by corresponding residence times or external influences such as a certain temperature profile in the construction space, but this does not have to be the case. In principle, simply a request for a change of material is sufficient to dispose of material if necessary.

[0031] Fig. 2 shows a perspective detailed view of section A of the Fig. 1 . In addition to the three discharge units 2, the container magazine 4 for the disposal containers 6, into which fluid, solidifiable material can be discharged, and the pivoting cover 3, on which the above-mentioned parts of the rinsing station can be arranged, can be seen.

[0032] The parts shown are a support arm 5, which can be attached to a pivoting and linear motion mechanism 8, and a disposal container 6 for discharged material, which can be connected to the support arm 5. Arranging the pivoting and linear motion mechanism 8 with the support arm 5 on the pivoting cover 3 of the device 1 has the advantage that the entire mechanism can be pivoted upward, for example, during servicing, to provide optimal access for service personnel, for example, to the discharge units 2. A different arrangement within the device 1 is also possible.

[0033] In Fig. 3 is a perspective front detail view of the device from Fig. 1 shown with three discharge units 2 and the pivoting and linear movement mechanism 8, which is shown without the pivotable casing cover 3 to which it can be arranged. The discharge units 2 can be mounted in a lifting mechanism 7, which allows the discharge units 2 to be lifted or moved from their working position in the installation space 14 into the rinsing position, if transfer from the installation space 14 is desired. This facilitates the placement of a disposal container 6 beneath the discharge unit 2, in particular beneath its discharge nozzle 12, wherein the disposal container 6 can be placed beneath the discharge unit 2 in the rinsing position by means of the support arm 5 to which it can be fastened and by means of the pivoting and linear movement mechanism 8 that can be arranged on the pivotable casing cover 3 of the device 1.

[0034] Fig. 4 shows another perspective rear detail view of the device from Fig. 1 without the discharge units 2 with the pivoting and linear movement mechanism 8 and the support arm 5 arranged thereon. The other end of the support arm 5 can be connected to a closure component 10, which covers the disposal container 6 (not shown here). The connection of the closure component 10 to the disposal container 6 can be made, for example, by means of a disposal container holder 9 ( Fig. 5 ) which can be connected directly to the end of the support arm 5 and holds the closure component 10 and the disposal container 6 connected thereto and, if necessary, connects them to one another. In the latter case, the connection can be made, for example, by pressing the two components together. However, the connection between the closure component 10 and the disposal container 6 can also be made, for example, by a screw or bayonet lock or by a force-fitting connection, wherein the connected parts are held only by the disposal container holder 9. The closure component 10 can also be integrated into the disposal container holder 9.

[0035] Also shown schematically is the pickup of the disposal container 6 from the container magazine 4, which has a singling unit (not shown in detail) for singling and transferring the disposal containers 6 from the container magazine 4 to the support arm 5, which picks up the disposal container 6 from the transferring singling unit and places it directly under the discharge unit 2 (not shown).

[0036] In Fig. 5 is a perspective detailed view of section B of the Fig. 4 with the support arm 5 with the disposal container holder 9 connected thereto and the closure component 10 connected thereto. The closure component 10 can, as shown, have three openings 11, which enable multiple discharge of, for example, at least partially degraded fluid, solidifiable material from the discharge unit 2. In principle, however, more or fewer than three openings 11 can also be provided. By means of the multiple discharge, the disposal containers 6 can be utilized efficiently.

[0037] Fig. 6 , another perspective detail view of section B of the Fig. 4 , shows further details of the rinsing station. It shows the support arm 5 with the disposal container holder 9 as well as the other parts of the rinsing station connected to it: the closure component 10, the disposal container 6, the discharge unit 2, and its discharge nozzle 12. The discharge nozzle 12 of the discharge unit 2 is positioned against the opening 11 of the closure component 10 and the connected disposal container 6.

[0038] Also shown are the three openings 11 of the closure component 10, with the pivoting and linear movement mechanism 8 allowing each of the openings 11 of the closure component 10 to be positioned below the discharge nozzle 12. After the material has been discharged into the disposal container 6, the discharge nozzle 12 is separated from the opening 11 of the closure component. Advantageously, any remaining material discharge can be simultaneously wiped off the discharge nozzle 12, thereby further improving its functionality.

[0039] Since the discharge of the fluid, solidifiable material occurs, for example, at a predetermined material temperature, the connection of discharge nozzle 12, closure component 10, and disposal container 6 creates a thermally optimized state in the disposal container 6, which leads to a minimization of the volume of the discharged material. Such a state can, however, also be achieved in other ways, e.g., by pressure or chemical additives. As a result, the large-volume thread swells normally created during discharge are melted into a minimal plug, making it possible to carry out multiple discharges using the multiple openings 11 of the closure component 10, and ensuring efficient and cost-effective multiple use of the disposal containers as needed.

[0040] Fig. 7 is another perspective, partially sectioned detail and sectional view analogous to section B of the Fig. 4with the support arm 5 with disposal container holder 9 and the associated closure component 10, disposal container 6 and discharge nozzle 12, whereby the discharge unit 2 is not shown.

[0041] Clearly visible in this illustration of the rinsing station is the special, coordinated geometry of the discharge nozzle 12 and the openings 11 of the closure component 10, which additionally contributes to reducing adhesions to the discharge nozzle and thus enables a largely thread-free separation of the discharge nozzle 12 from the opening 11 of the closure component 10. In the case shown, this is a conical shape. However, it can be any other coordinated geometric shape that is suitable for reducing adhesions of discharged material to the discharge nozzle 12 and thus enables a largely thread-free separation of the discharge nozzle from the opening 11 of the closure component 10. This avoids additional cleaning processes for cleaning the discharge nozzle 12, thereby improving the efficiency of the device 1.

[0042] In principle, at the same time as the discharge nozzle 12 is separated from the opening 11 of the closure component 10, particularly when these components interact, any material still adhering to the discharge nozzle can also be separated off at the disposal container 6. Excess or adhering material, in particular material that is no longer required or, for example, degraded material, can thus be transferred from the discharge nozzle 12 to the disposal container 6. Advantageously, the rinsing station can be used to clean at least one discharge unit 2, in particular its discharge nozzle 12, which is in the rinsing position and possibly outside the build space 14 and thus not in the production process, at the same time as the production of the three-dimensional object 13 by means of at least one discharge unit 2 which is located in the build space 14 and thus in the production process. This further shortens the production of the three-dimensional objects.

[0043] The disposal containers 6, completely filled with discharge material, can be transported to a disposal facility connected to the device 1 by means of the pivoting and linear movement mechanism 8 and disposed of there. The disposal containers 6 can be disposed of via a guide track connected to the device 1 to an external collection point, which in turn can be emptied independently of the process.

[0044] A method for rinsing at least one movable discharge unit 2 for a device 1 for producing a three-dimensional object 13 from solidifiable material in a construction space 14 is defined in claim 11.

[0045] If several discharge units 2 are used simultaneously, it is additionally possible to carry out the production of the three-dimensional object 13 by means of at least one discharge unit 2 in the construction space 14 and the discharge of the fluid solidifiable material by means of at least one discharge unit 2 in the rinsing position.

[0046] For this purpose, a discharge unit 2 awaiting cleaning is removed from the manufacturing process, e.g., from the build space, while another discharge unit 2 continues with the manufacturing process. The removed discharge unit 2 is rinsed or cleaned according to the above explanations and then reinserted into the build space 14. In this way, all discharge units 2 of the device 1 can be rinsed one after the other, thus eliminating any time loss due to a sequential sequence of the manufacturing process and the rinsing process, as is known from the prior art.

[0047] Advantageously, when separating the discharge nozzle 12 of the discharge unit 2 from the opening 11 of the closure component 10 of the disposal container 6, any remaining material discharge at the discharge nozzle 12 can be wiped off at the same time, which additionally increases the service life of the discharge nozzle 12 and improves the material-specific properties of the material discharged in the construction space.

[0048] Furthermore, when using a closure component 10 with a plurality of openings 11, a multiple discharge of fluid solidifiable material into the disposal container 6 can be carried out, thereby ensuring efficient and cost-effective multiple use of the disposal containers.
