AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current tsunami detection systems are inadequate for providing timely warnings, as they are expensive, require maintenance, and may not detect local tsunamis effectively, often failing to alert communities in time due to the speed at which tsunamis travel across deep seas.

Method used

A device located on the seabed with a ballast tank and pump system that measures water pressure, ascends to the surface upon detecting a tsunami, transmitting a warning signal, and can be tested without maintenance by simulating alarms at predetermined intervals.

Benefits of technology

Enables quick and reliable detection and warning of tsunamis, reducing response time and costs, while being simple and cost-effective, allowing for local independent warning systems to alert coastal communities effectively.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method and device suitable for detection of and warning against tsunamis. The device when in use being located in the water at sea, wherein the device comprises a vessel (2), a sensor (3) for measuring at least one physical quantity of the surrounding water, a control unit (4) located inside the vessel (2) and operatively connected to said sensor (3), and communication means (10) comprising a transmitter for communicating with at least one external receiver that the predetermined condition relating to said at least one physical quantity is fulfilled. The device is characterized in that the device further comprises a ballast tank (8) located inside the vessel (2), wherein the interior of the ballast tank (8) is connected to the outside of the vessel (2), and a pump (6), when active configured to pump water from the interior of the ballast tank (8) to the outside of the vessel (2), wherein the overall density of the device is greater than the density of the surrounding water when the ballast tank (8) is filled with water, and the overall density of the device is less than the density of the surrounding water when the ballast tank (8) is empty of water.
