AI Technical Summary
Current heating, cooling, and ventilation systems face challenges in achieving thermal comfort and flexibility, as they often rely on either convection or radiation, leading to inefficiencies and discomfort due to stratification and draft issues, and require extensive installation on ceiling surfaces, limiting adaptability in changing room configurations.
A modular island system that combines radiation and thermal convection, featuring a peripheral frame with a diffusion element, articulated deflectors, and thermostatic actuation to automatically adjust air flow direction and speed based on temperature, allowing for efficient heating, cooling, and ventilation without the need for extensive ceiling coverage.
The system provides excellent thermal comfort by optimizing air flow direction and speed based on temperature, eliminating stratification and drafts, while offering high flexibility and efficiency in heating and cooling, and allowing for modular installation on partial ceiling surfaces.
Description
Field of invention
[0001] The present invention relates to a modular island system for heating, cooling and ventilating buildings by thermal radiation and convection as well as for the acoustic treatment of premises. Discussion of the state of the art
[0002] We know of ceiling diffusers in the form of grilles which blow the treated air (heated or cooled air and ventilation air) towards the room at a specific angle.
[0003] Some of them blow air horizontally to the ceiling, which is suitable for cooling rooms (cold air, denser than the ambient air, naturally descends towards the room) but is very ineffective for heating (hot air, less dense than the ambient air, stagnates in the upper part of the room, thus creating a stratification phenomenon).
[0004] Some of them blow air perpendicular to the ceiling, which is suitable for heating rooms (hot air, which is less dense than the ambient air, needs to be blown downwards to prevent it from stagnating in the upper part of the room and creating a stratification phenomenon) but very uncomfortable for cooling (cold air, which is denser than the ambient air, falls at high speed towards the room, creating air currents).
[0005] Some of them blow air at a specific angle (for example 45°) relative to the ceiling towards the room so as to be suitable for heating and cooling, but the diffusion efficiency is then not optimal in either mode, and the overall comfort is therefore very approximate.
[0006] Perforated ceilings or modules are also known, which use perforations to blow treated air vertically into the room at very low speed. This technology is suitable for cooling but is very inefficient in heating mode. Indeed, hot air, which is less dense than ambient air, needs to be blown at a certain speed in order to benefit from sufficient kinetic energy to reach the floor of the room and therefore avoid stratification phenomena.
[0007] Ceiling cassettes are also known, frequently installed in office spaces or shops. These are equipped with motorized diffusion vanes on their periphery, which allow the angle of air blown into the room to be adjusted. Their disadvantage lies in the fact that it is up to the user to adjust the diffusion angle daily, depending on the temperature of the blown air, which is very difficult to achieve in practice.
[0008] It should be noted that all of the processes mentioned above use air blowing, therefore a convection phenomenon, to transmit 100% of the thermal power. They therefore require significant air flow rates (and therefore air speeds) as well as a blown air temperature quite far from the ambient temperature inside the room, which most of the time generates thermal discomfort within the room.
[0009] Other processes known as radiant panels use thermal radiation to diffuse 100% of the useful thermal power. These can be presented in the form of modules, some of which have the possibility of treating the acoustics of the room via a perforated plate permeable to thermal radiation in the lower part of the module and acoustic insulation placed inside the module.
[0010] This process, which only uses thermal radiation as a diffusion vector, has very limited cooling power due to the risk of reaching the dew point on the surface of the panel and therefore the risk of condensation forming.
[0011] We also know the cold beams, this process uses a heat exchanger which, in contact with the ambient air, generates an induction and therefore a convective air flow. The low speeds of the induced air flow allow this process to benefit from satisfactory performance but only in cooling mode.
[0012] Finally, we know the Barrisol Clim ® device described in document WO 2018 / 037184 A1 (Jean-Marc SCHERRER [FR]; Damien LANG [FR]).
[0013] This device, unlike the previously mentioned processes, uses both convection and radiation to distribute thermal power. Very comfortable in both heating and cooling mode thanks to its parietal air diffusion (along the walls of the room), it avoids air currents and allows for very good temperature homogeneity within the occupied volume of the room. However, it must be installed over the entire ceiling surface of the room served, thus allowing reduced flexibility in buildings where the rooms may often have to be redefined via changes in partitioning, such as office floors.
[0014] Furthermore, US 2020 / 003450 (A1) (SURMINSKI DAVID MARK [CA] et AL) describes a laminar flow diffuser with integrated lighting having a frame for supporting an air plenum and a lower housing. The air plenum receives conditioned air from a conditioned air source. The lower housing is attached to the bottom of the plenum. An aperture plate damper installed below the upper plenum regulates the airflow from the plenum through the laminar flow diffuser. A transparent or translucent perforated diffuser face forms the outlet from the lower housing to the room below. LED strips are positioned around the inner periphery of the lower housing. A perforated reflector panel is positioned below the aperture plate damper and above the LED strips to diffuse light from the LED strips through the perforated diffuser face.
[0015] As for it, JP H02 68445 (A) (DIESEL KIKI CO) aims to eliminate a drive power supply, reduce the number of parts and enable prevention of a drive noise of the engine to be carried out by a method in which a heat-sensitive part is formed by a hydrogen occlusion alloy, an actuator is actuated by a hydrogen pressure. When a temperature of the air blown inside an air blowing duct is high, hydrogen is discharged from a hydrogen occlusion alloy, so that a hydrogen pressure inside a pipe and an actuator is increased. The actuator consisting of bellows is extended due to this increase in hydrogen pressure, a rod is moved upward and each of the flaps is set to be directed downward. In turn, when the temperature of the air blown inside the duct is low, hydrogen is absorbed into the hydrogen occlusion alloy, so that the hydraulic pressure inside the pipe or actuator decreases and thus the actuator is retracted and the rod is moved downward. Each of the flaps is arranged upward. At an intermediate temperature between a high temperature and a low temperature, an angle of each of the flaps is linearly controlled in response to a hydrogen absorption and discharge characteristic of the hydrogen occlusion alloy.
[0016] US 3,937,133 A (BERTIN MANNIE et AL) discloses an air conditioning outlet having a plurality of interconnected modules establishing its side walls which support a closed bottom and by which the outlet is connected to a mounting frame. Each module has a support frame consisting of upper and lower side members and end members, each of a length of an extrusion providing an outer wall and an inwardly disposed wall. Means are provided for interconnecting the frames to each other vertically or laterally in the same plane or at right angles so as to provide airtight seals.
[0017] Generally speaking, and in order to combine significant cooling power with good thermal comfort (absence of drafts and uniformity of temperature in the room), it is necessary to have a device allowing thermal diffusion both by radiation and by convection (blowing air into the room).
[0018] Regarding the power diffused by thermal convection, it is important to diffuse the cooling air parallel to the ceiling and at low speed so as to avoid air current phenomena.
[0019] The heating air must be diffused towards the floor of the room and at a higher speed so as to give it sufficient range to avoid stratification phenomena.
[0020] Finally, and apart from the Barrisol Clim ® device mentioned above, which has the disadvantage of having to be installed over the entire ceiling surface of the room, diffusion systems use either thermal convection or thermal radiation as the vector for diffusing the thermal power required for heating and cooling the room, which does not allow them to combine significant cooling power with satisfactory thermal comfort. Brief description of the invention
[0021] The present invention proposes to overcome these drawbacks by proposing a modular system of islands allowing the heating, cooling and ventilation of premises (homes, apartments, buildings, factories, sports halls, schools, hospitals, etc.) while ensuring excellent thermal comfort (absence of drafts and temperature homogeneity within the occupied volume) in both heating and cooling; the modular system of islands does not need to be positioned against the vertical walls and thus allows it to be fixed only on a part of the ceiling surface.
[0022] One of the aims of the present invention is to propose a radiant and convective system making it possible to heat or cool the premises with very high efficiency, high admissible thermal powers and excellent thermal comfort resulting from uniform temperatures and the absence of air currents.

Detailed description of the invention
[0027] As mentioned previously, the best thermal comfort within a room is achieved when it is possible to distribute the thermal power necessary for heating and cooling the latter via a combination of radiation and thermal convection.
[0028] Furthermore, the diffused convective power can be a source of discomfort (draft) or inefficiency (stratification) if the blown air is not oriented according to its temperature. In addition, hot air requires high speed blowing in order to benefit from sufficient kinetic energy to reach the floor of the room, unlike cold air, which is denser than ambient air, which naturally falls towards the floor of the room and must be blown at low speeds in order to avoid draft phenomena.
[0029] Finally, many buildings or premises, such as office spaces, require flexibility allowing the modularity of spaces which are often subject to rearrangement via partitioning modifications.
[0030] The invention thus described proposes to respond to all of these constraints by means of modular islands, working in thermal radiation and convection, capable of automatically adapting (therefore without action by the user) the orientation and speed of the air flow blown towards the room, the modular island or the set of modular islands only occupying part of the ceiling surface without needing to be attached to the vertical walls.

[0052] Another object of the invention is to provide a modular island intended for heating, cooling and ventilating a room by thermal radiation and convection, said modular island being able to be suspended from the ceiling of a room, said modular island comprising: a peripheral frame (1) provided with at least one attachment line for a diffusion element such as a stretched canvas (8) located in its lower part opposite the ceiling; on one or more of its faces said peripheral frame (1) comprises an air blowing slot (2) towards the room; a diffusion element such as a stretched canvas (8), attached to the attachment line of the peripheral frame, visible from the room and forming the horizontal lower face of said modular island; a cover (19) forming the upper face of the modular island facing the ceiling; an air blowing connection tapping (4) fixed to the cover (18) of the modular island and allowing the injection of treated air into the interior volume of the modular island;a channel of articulated deflectors (10, 11) formed by an upper articulated deflector (11) and a lower articulated deflector (10), fixed to the peripheral frame (1) at the air blowing slot (2) and allowing the blown air to be directed at a defined angle relative to the ceiling varying from 0°, namely parallel to the ceiling when cold air is blown into the island, to a maximum of 70° when hot air is blown into the modular island; a thermostatic actuating means (13) for actuating said channel of articulated deflectors (10, 11) by means of a deflector actuating means such as an actuating rod (14) and giving the channel a blowing angle dependent on the temperature of the treated air injected into the modular island, said thermostatic actuating means (13) comprising a piston whose output stroke depends on the air temperature in which said thermostatic actuating means (13) is immersed;a return spring (15) for exerting a force opposite to the stroke of the piston of said thermostatic actuating means (13) and thus returning it to its minimum stroke when cold air is blown into the modular island, and wherein said channel of articulated deflectors (10, 11) comprises an articulated means for maintaining parallelism (12) positioned in said channel and connecting the upper and lower articulated deflectors (11 and 10) to the articulation points B and C respectively, said upper and lower articulated deflectors (11 and 10) fixed to the peripheral frame (1) at the articulation points A and D describing with the articulation points B and C of said articulated means for maintaining parallelism (12) a parallelogram ABCD imposing parallelism on its opposite sides. ;
[0053] The invention as described, has the particular advantage of allowing thermal diffusion towards the room served both by radiation and by convection. Indeed, under the effect of the flow of treated air (hot or cold) injected into the modular island, the diffusing surface (8) (ideally a stretched canvas) will heat up or cool down so as to generate thermal radiation towards the room. Furthermore, the treated air injected into the modular island, after having given up part of its thermal energy to the diffusing surface, will come out through the blowing slot(s) (2) thus causing diffusion by thermal convection towards the room (room to be treated).
[0054] Furthermore, thanks to the thermostatic actuation means (13) (for example a thermostatic cylinder) on the articulated channel of deflectors (10, 11), this solution allows an orientation of the air flow blown by the slot (2) (convective power) dependent on the temperature of the treated air flow, so when cold air is injected into the modular island (in cooling mode) it will be blown parallel to the ceiling, ideally at 0°, (minimum stroke of the thermostatic actuation means (13)); conversely when hot air is injected into the modular island (in heating mode), it will be blown towards the room (ideally at 45°) so as to eliminate stratification phenomena.
[0055] Finally, the geometry used based on an articulation (ideally generating a parallelogram at the level of the deflectors), allows a variation of the section of the blowing slot (2), thus in cooling mode the deflectors (or fins) in horizontal position generate the maximum section of the slot (2) and therefore low air speeds; conversely in heating mode the section of the slot (2) is reduced to the maximum thus increasing the speed of the blown air and therefore the range of the air flow.
[0056] The system according to the invention makes it possible to act on the air blowing slot (2) and therefore on the articulated channel of deflectors (10, 11) so as to direct its flow and vary its section. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES
[0057] In particular, it is proposed to the figure 1, a modular island element for heating and / or cooling and ventilating a building premises, the modular island element once suspended from said ceiling by means of hangers (7) comprises: a connection tapping (3) allowing connection to an air suction duct so as to convey the ambient air from the premises to an air conditioning unit, for example a fan-vector or an air handling unit; the air sucked from the premises ideally passing through a filter (6) via for example a sealed filter-holder suction box (18) fixed to the upper cover (19) of the modular island (see Figure 5); once heated or cooled and optionally mixed with fresh ventilation air (if the modular island is also connected to the room's ventilation system), the treated air is injected into the volume of the island via a connection tapping of the blowing duct (4); depending on the temperature of the treated air injected into the island, the thermostatic cylinder (13) (or any other equipment capable of fulfilling the same purpose) deploys a stroke of its piston proportional to the temperature of the injected air (see figures 2 , 3 And 4 ).
[0058] So the hotter the air, the greater the stroke and vice versa, a return spring (15) makes it possible to oppose a force to the stroke of the thermostatic cylinder (13) so as to return the latter to its minimum stroke when cold air is blown into the island; the thermostatic cylinder (13) actuates a means for actuating the air blowing deflectors (14), such as for example an actuating rod (or linkage), connected to the articulated deflector channel (10, 11), subjecting the deflectors (10, 11) to an angle dependent on the temperature of the treated air injected into the modular island;whatever their angle, the articulated deflectors, ideally 2 deflectors with an upper and a lower one (10 and 11), fixed to the peripheral frame (1) remain parallel thanks to the articulated means of maintaining the parallelism of the deflectors such as for example an articulated rod (12) connecting them together, in fact the points of articulation between the deflectors (ideally 2 deflectors 10 and 11), the peripheral frame (1) and the articulated means of maintaining the parallelism of the deflectors (12) ideally describe a parallelogram ABCD (see ; figures 2 , 3 And 4); the treated air, injected into the modular island is thus blown towards the room, via the blowing slot (2) at an angle equivalent to that of the deflectors themselves actuated by the thermostatic cylinder (13) and therefore adapts automatically so as to respect the inclination allowing the achievement of the best thermal comfort; due to the characteristics of the geometry adopted by the deflectors, (ideally a parallelogram ABCD) the air passage section between the deflectors (ideally a lower deflector (10) and an upper deflector (11)) decreases when the inclination of the latter increases relative to a horizontal plane, thus during an injection of very cold air ( figure 2 ) the section of the slot is maximum (the deflectors being ideally in a horizontal position) thus generating a low air speed conducive to comfort in cooling mode. Conversely, when very hot air is blown into the island ( figure 3) the section of the slot is minimal, thus generating a higher speed of blown air suitable for heating mode.
[0059] The invention thus described makes it possible to vary both the angle at which the treated air is blown towards the room and the speed at which the latter is blown, automatically depending on the temperature of the air injected into the modular island.
[0060] Advantageously, the modular island is equipped with acoustic insulation (16) as well as a diffusion element (8) (for example a stretched canvas) micro-perforated, thus allowing the acoustic treatment of the room.
[0061] Preferably, the island is also provided with a light diffusion element (ideally a stretched canvas) (9) as well as a light source (17) fixed for example to its periphery or to the lower face of the cover (19) or the insulation (16) allowing the illumination of the room via light distributed on the diffusion element (8) (ideally a stretched canvas) visible from the room.
[0062] Advantageously, the lower articulated deflector (11) acts as a light barrier so as to prevent light from escaping through the blowing slot (2).
[0063] According to a particular embodiment, the modular island described above does not include an air suction connection, a box and a filtration device so as to generate only an air blow towards the room. In this case, the air suction is carried out via a device independent of the present invention.
[0064] According to a particular embodiment of the invention, several modular islands can be placed side by side so as to generate a larger emitting surface. In this case, a connection slot (5) arranged, for example, on the short sides of each modular island allows the treated air, blown into the islands, to circulate from one modular island to the other. These connection slots (5) can of course also be located on the long sides of the modular island, in which case the blowing slots towards the room (2) would be located on the short sides.
[0065] To do this, the connection slots of each modular island are connected to each other, ideally by joining the islands together on the side of the face including the inter-module connection slot (5).
[0066] When several modular islands are joined together (see figures 6 And 7), for example 2 modular islands (20 and 21), their small adjoining sides (23 and 24) are equipped with a connection slot (5) allowing the passage of treated air from one modular island to the other.
[0067] The small sides located at the ends of the structure obtained (22 and 25) are then either devoid of a connecting slot (5), or their connecting slot (5) is closed by any means suitable for this purpose.
[0068] Of course, according to another embodiment of the invention, it is also provided to join more than two modular islands together, for example 3 or 4 or more. In this case, the small sides located at the ends of the structure obtained (22 and 25) are also provided with a connecting slot (5).
