Abstract
Description
[0001] DESCRIPTION
[0002] TITLE: Method for managing equipment within a domestic audiovisual environment, corresponding computer program, data medium and playback device.
[0003] Technical field
[0004] The field of the invention is that of the domestic audiovisual network, and the management of electrical consumption in such a network. More specifically, the invention relates to the management of the equipment of such a network in the case where a device for reproducing a multimedia stream can be controlled remotely by several remote control devices.
[0005] Prior art
[0006] The home audiovisual network has evolved significantly in recent years, and can now integrate multiple smart devices, such as a television (for example a connected television such as a Smart TV), a TV decoder, an Internet access gateway, a games console, or even a multimedia streaming player terminal such as an HDMI key (for example the Chromecast® from Google® or the TV Key® from Orange®).
[0007] Each of these devices is provided to the user with its own remote control device, which allows it to be controlled remotely, by radio waves, infrared, or even by wired connection. In addition, given the proliferation of equipment that can be controlled by a dedicated remote control, users are increasingly resorting to so-called "universal" or multifunctional remote controls, which allow them to control several devices, but also to coordinate the use of several devices within an activity.
[0008] It is now common for several remote control devices to be paired with the same piece of equipment in the home audiovisual network, for example a TV-type playback terminal or a set-top-box type TV decoder. For example, an HDMI key such as the Orange® TV Key® can be paired simultaneously with the remote control of the television to which it is connected, and with the proprietary remote control dedicated to it.
[0009] These remote controls can operate using various technologies (infrared, radio frequency, Bluetooth®, etc.) and, depending on this technology, have a more or less significant power consumption. However, in an ecological concern to reduce power consumption in the domestic audiovisual network, it appears unnecessary for all these remote controls to be simultaneously maintained in an active state, if the user prefers to use only one of them.
[0010] To overcome this drawback and save remote control batteries, most manufacturers have already included a standby timer for remote controls: at the end of this timer, if no activity has been detected on the remote control, it automatically enters a standby state. The duration of the timer is chosen by each manufacturer, based on a comparison of the power consumption required to keep the remote control in an active state and the power consumption required to exit a standby state. It also takes into account the time required to exit a standby state. This duration is fixed once and for all, when the remote control is built, and does not depend on its context of use. For example, for the Orange® TV Key®, the duration of this "timer" (in French, temporisation) for putting the remote control into standby mode is set to one hour.
[0011] There is a need to improve this technique and further reduce the power consumption of remote control devices in a home audiovisual network.
[0012] Statement of the invention
[0013] The invention meets this need by proposing a method for managing equipment within a domestic audiovisual environment, comprising a device for rendering a multimedia stream configured to receive commands from at least two separate remote control devices.
[0014] According to the invention, such an equipment management method comprises the following steps, implemented by said restitution device: detection of reception of a command from a first of said remote control devices; disconnection of at least one other of said remote control devices.
[0015] Thus, the invention is based on a completely new and inventive approach to the management of equipment in a domestic audiovisual network, and in particular remote control devices capable of controlling such equipment.
[0016] Indeed, the invention proposes, when a multimedia stream rendering device such as a TV decoder, an HDMI key or a connected television for example, can receive commands from several different remote control devices (for example a remote control dedicated to the TV decoder and a remote control dedicated to the television), to disconnect at least one of these remote control devices, when it is detected that another remote control device has taken over the control of the rendering device. Indeed, the user most often has a preferred remote control, which he prefers to use to control the equipment on his network, either because it is more ergonomic, or because it allows him to access more functionalities for example. Based on this observation, it is not useful to keep active a remote control that is not in use, when it is observed that the user is controlling his equipment from another remote control. This advantageously reduces the power consumption of unused remote control devices, which saves the life of their batteries, and meets an ecological constraint. Thus, the method according to one embodiment of the invention is based on the detection of the reception by the multimedia stream playback device of a command from a remote control device, namely the remote control used by the user of the domestic audiovisual network: for example, the reception of key codes for changing the audiovisual reception channel from this remote control used is detected.
[0017] In response to this detection, and without waiting for the end of the standby timer provided by the manufacturers of the other remote controls paired with the multimedia streaming device, the playback device disconnects all or part of these other remote controls, in order to reduce their power consumption. Indeed, once disconnected, these remote controls automatically switch to standby mode.
[0018] According to a first aspect of the invention, the step of disconnecting said at least one other remote control device is implemented at the end of a time delay of determined duration, initialized upon detection of reception of a command from the first remote control device, and in the absence of reception of a command from said at least one other remote control device during the duration of the time delay.
[0019] Indeed, the disconnection of unused remote control devices can be immediate, as soon as the reception of a command from the remote control used is detected: in this case, the timeout is configured to be of zero duration. Alternatively, one can choose to launch a timer upon detection of a command received from the remote control used, and to disconnect the other remote controls only at the expiration of this timer, to ensure that they are indeed unused, and can be deactivated without harming the quality of the user experience. Of course, if during the duration of this timer, the multimedia streaming rendering device receives a command from one of these other remote controls, it deduces that it is also used, and that it must therefore not be disconnected. Only those which have remained inactive during the duration of the timer can be subject to the disconnection step.
[0020] According to another aspect, the determined duration is chosen according to an objective of reducing the electrical consumption of said at least one other remote control device.
[0021] In particular, it is possible to provide for associating timers of distinct durations with the different remote control devices, for example by associating timers of shorter durations with the remote control devices that consume the most energy.
[0022] According to a first embodiment, the device for rendering a multimedia stream comprises a multimedia stream player terminal and a rendering terminal connected to each other by an HDMI (“High-Definition Multimedia Interface”) link and compatible with the HDMI-CEC (“Consumer Electronics Control”) standard. In this embodiment, said at least two separate remote control devices comprise a remote control device for the multimedia stream player terminal and a remote control device for the rendering terminal. Upon detection of receipt of a command from the remote control device of the rendering terminal, the multimedia stream player terminal implements the step of disconnecting the remote control device from the multimedia stream player terminal.
[0023] As a reminder, the HDMI standard defines an audio / video interface used to transmit data from a source device (i.e. a media player terminal) to a screen (i.e. a playback terminal). It is the main connection standard used in the audiovisual environment. HDMI-CEC is an optional feature present on many HDMI-compatible devices that allows commands received from the remote control of one device to be transmitted to other devices connected to it via HDMI, and therefore to control several HDMI devices from a single remote control.
[0024] In this embodiment, it is proposed to advantageously exploit this functionality of the HDMI-CEC standard to implement the invention. We consider the example of a TV decoder and a television connected by HDMI link, and compatible with the optional HDMI-CEC function. When the user uses the television remote control, for example to change channels, the key codes emitted by this remote control are detected by the TV decoder thanks to the HDMI-CEC functionality. The TV decoder can then cut the connection with the remote control dedicated to it (decoder remote control) to put it on standby.
[0025] This de facto reduces the battery consumption of the decoder's remote control by disconnecting it without waiting for the inactivity standby timer provided by its manufacturer to expire.
[0026] According to another embodiment, said at least two remote control devices comply with the Bluetooth standard, and the rendering device comprises a Bluetooth server module configured to perform the step of disconnecting one of the remote control devices.
[0027] In this embodiment, the rendering device is for example a connected television, to which are paired the remote control provided by the manufacturer for this television, and a multi-function remote control that the user has added to the home audiovisual network. If these two remote controls are of the Bluetooth® type, their power consumption can be high and it is then advantageous to quickly put into standby the one of the two which is detected to be not in use. The invention also relates to a computer program product comprising program code instructions for implementing an equipment management method as described above, when it is executed by a processor.
[0028] The invention also relates to a recording medium readable by a computer on which is recorded a computer program comprising program code instructions for executing the steps of the equipment management method according to the invention as described above.
[0029] Such a recording medium may be any entity or device capable of storing the program. For example, the medium may include a storage medium, such as a ROM, for example a CD ROM or a microelectronic circuit ROM, or a magnetic recording medium, for example a USB flash drive or a hard disk.
[0030] On the other hand, such a recording medium may be a transmissible medium such as an electrical or optical signal, which may be conveyed via an electrical or optical cable, by radio or by other means, so that the computer program contained therein is remotely executable. The program according to the invention may in particular be downloaded over a network, for example the Internet.
[0031] Alternatively, the recording medium may be an integrated circuit in which the program is incorporated, the circuit being adapted to perform or to be used in performing the aforementioned display control method.
[0032] The invention also relates to a device for reproducing a multimedia stream within a domestic audiovisual environment, the device being configured to receive commands from at least two separate remote control devices.
[0033] According to the invention, such a restitution device comprises: a module for detecting reception of a command from a first of the remote control devices; a module for disconnecting at least one other of the remote control devices.
[0034] According to an advantageous aspect, the disconnection module is configured to disconnect said at least one other of the remote control devices at the end of a time delay of determined duration, initialized upon detection of reception of a command from the first remote control device by the detection module, and in the absence of reception, by the detection module, of a command from said at least one other remote control device during the duration of the time delay.
[0035] According to a particular embodiment of the invention, such a device for rendering a multimedia stream comprises a multimedia stream player terminal and a rendering terminal connected to each other by an HDMI (“High-Definition Multimedia Interface”) link and compatible with the HDMI-CEC (“Consumer Electronics Control”) standard. In this embodiment, the detection and disconnection modules are integrated into the multimedia stream player terminal, and the disconnection module is configured to disconnect a remote control device from the multimedia stream player terminal when the detection module detects receipt of a command from a remote control device of the rendering terminal.
[0036] The aforementioned device for rendering a multimedia stream and the corresponding computer program have at least the same advantages as those conferred by the equipment management method according to the present invention.
[0037] The invention can be proposed for example on multimedia stream reader terminals which broadcast video content (set-top-box, HDMI key such as Chromecast®, Fire TV Stick, etc.), and which can be connected via HDMI to a playback device (e.g. a TV) having the CEC option.

[0045] Detailed description of embodiments of the invention
[0046] The general principle of the invention is based on the disconnection of one or more remote control devices not in use in a domestic audiovisual network, for the purpose of reducing electricity consumption, the non-use of a remote control device being deduced from the detection of the use of another remote control device.
[0047] Figure 1 illustrates an environment for implementing the invention according to a particular embodiment. The environment illustrated in Figure 1 comprises a DOM network of a user's audiovisual equipment (telephone, TV, decoder, tablet, personal computer, game console, etc.).
[0048] In the particular example of implementation described here, the DOM network includes in particular:
[0049] - a PAS home gateway configured to be connected to a RES communication network, for example an Internet network, and to act as a router for the user's terminals when they are connected to the PAS gateway. The PAS gateway is configured to establish a local network to which the user's home devices are able to connect, for example to communicate with each other, or to access the RES Internet network. In addition to access to the Internet network, the PAS home gateway also makes it possible to provide the user with additional services such as IP telephony (for Internet Protocol in English), IP television, etc.
[0050] - a DEC decoder of audio-visual streams, for example IP television streams received via the PAS gateway, from the RES network. According to the particular embodiment described here, the DEC decoder is connected to the home gateway to receive the IP television streams, for example wired, or wireless (WIFI), or using PLC (Power Line Communication) technology. An RCU-DEC remote control allows the DEC decoder to be controlled remotely.
[0051] - a TV1 television connected to the DEC decoder, and adapted to display the decoded audio-visual streams. According to a particular embodiment, the TV1 television may be a television connected, for example via WIFI, to the PAS home gateway. An RCU-TV remote control makes it possible to remotely control the TV1 television. In addition, the TV1 television may be connected to the DEC decoder via an HDMI link, and may be compatible with the HDMI-CEC standard.
[0052] - a CLETV TV key suitable for broadcasting, for example, IP television streams received via the PAS gateway, from the RES network, multimedia content stored on user equipment (computer, storage memory - not shown); the TV key is connected to the PAS home gateway, for example via WIFI, and plugged into an HDMI port of a TV2 television suitable for reproducing decoded television streams or multimedia content. The TV key is, for example, compatible with the HDMI-CEC standard, and can be controlled remotely by an RCU-CLETV remote control.
[0053] The user's home equipment network may include other home equipment not shown, for example a tablet, a personal computer, a landline or mobile phone, Bluetooth speakers or speakers capable of connecting to the PAS home gateway, etc. and various additional remote control devices, which may take the form of a voice control interface, for example. In this case, a voice recognition module, embedded in one of the devices, or in a remote server, analyzes the words spoken by the user and translates them into commands which are then routed to the equipment to be controlled. The various remote control devices illustrated in Figure 1 may be infrared (IR) remote controls, radio wave remote controls, or Bluetooth® remote controls, for example. They may have different buttons, such as an on / off button, navigation arrows in a contextual menu, etc.
[0054] Figure 3 presents in the form of a simplified flowchart the different steps implemented by the equipment management method according to an embodiment of the invention, in a simplified environment as illustrated in Figure 2. In this example, we only consider the case of two devices in the DOM environment of Figure 1, namely a TV connected by a link conforming to the HDMI standard to a multimedia stream player terminal of the HDMI key type, noted CLETV. It is assumed that these two devices are compatible with the HDMI-CEC function of the HDMI standard.
[0055] In Figure 2, there is also shown an RCU-TV remote control device, dedicated to the remote control of the TV set, for example using infrared transmission technology, and an RCU-CLETV remote control device, dedicated to the remote control of the CLETV TV key, for example using Bluetooth® technology, as symbolized by the dotted arrows.
[0056] We consider, in relation to figure 3, the following sequence of steps: during a step referenced E1, the user activates the TV using the RCU-TV remote control dedicated to him (TV_ON (RCU-TV)), at a time noted T.
[0057] For example, we assume that he wants to access television content, for example a program broadcast in real time (LIVE program) from one of the channels in the channel package to which he is subscribed. He therefore needs to start his multimedia stream player terminal, i.e. his TV key denoted CLETV, and to do this he uses the associated remote control RCU-CLETV during a step referenced E2 (CLETV_ON (RCU-CLETV)), for example at a time denoted T+lmin.
[0058] It also uses the TV's RCU-TV remote control to change the source on the TV, and to obtain the reproduction on its screen of the multimedia stream coming from the CLETV terminal. This step E3 CHG_SOURCE_TV (RCU-TV) takes place at approximately the same time T+lmin.
[0059] At a time T+2min, the user changes channels on the CLETV terminal but uses the numeric keys of the RCU-TV remote control of the TV to do so. The reception of this channel change command, in the form of a key code, is detected, during a step referenced E4, by the CLETV terminal thanks to the HDMI-CEC functionality it incorporates. Indeed, this command received by the infrared receiver of the TV is conveyed to the CLETV terminal by the HDMI cable connecting the TV to the TV stick. HDMI-CEC technology allows devices connected to the TV via the HDMI ports to communicate with the TV. The CLETV terminal integrates a command detection module, the operation of which is controlled by a daemon-type computer program, which scans the key codes received and has the list of equipment in the DOM home environment.Upon receiving a key code, it can identify the equipment that issued it.
[0060] In an optional embodiment, upon detection of this command received from the RCU-TV remote control, the CLETV terminal initializes a timer during a step referenced E5. This timer will preferably be of short duration D, for example one minute. During the duration D of this timer, the command detection module of the CLETV terminal scans any other key codes received, to check whether another command is received from the RCU-CLETV remote control (step E6).
[0061] If not, at the end of the timer (step E7 End_Temp), the CLETV terminal deduces that the user prefers to use the RCU-TV remote control dedicated to the TV rather than the RCU-CLETV remote control dedicated to the CLETV multimedia stream player terminal, and that the latter can therefore advantageously switch to standby mode, in order to save energy.
[0062] It therefore proceeds, at a time T+D+2min, to the DCNX disconnection of the RCU-CLETV remote control dedicated to controlling CLETV, during a step referenced E8.
[0063] In another embodiment, step E8 of disconnecting the RCU-CLETV remote control is implemented as soon as the command detection module of the multimedia stream player terminal detects the reception of a command from the RCU-TV remote control of the television, during step E4. This amounts to considering a time delay of zero duration D=0. In this case, the unused RCU-CLETV remote control is put into standby mode from time T+2min.
[0064] Regardless of the embodiment variant chosen, the automatic standby of the RCU-CLETV remote control, which results from its disconnection by the CLETV terminal, occurs much earlier than according to the techniques of the prior art. Indeed, the disconnection is triggered as soon as the use of another remote control is detected, without waiting for the expiry of the automatic standby timer on inactivity, provided by the manufacturer of the remote control, the duration of which varies depending on the manufacturer but generally takes values between ten minutes and one hour.
[0065] The principle illustrated by Figure 3 is particularly advantageous in the case where the use of the RCU-TV remote control of the TV provides the user with a more favorable service than the remote control of the RCU-CLETV multimedia stream player terminal, thanks for example to an interface comprising a greater number of keys or access to more varied control functions. It makes it possible to preserve the electrical energy contained in the battery of the RCU-CLETV remote control, which the user will always need for certain specific uses, and to issue certain dedicated commands, not accessible with other remote controls.
[0066] In another embodiment, the general principle of the invention also applies advantageously in the context of a single rendering device, for example a connected TVC television, which can be controlled by two separate remote control devices, for example a conventional RCU-TVC remote control, and an intelligent remote control of the RCU-SmartTV type, both operating using Bluetooth® technology. In this case, the connected TVC television integrates a Bluetooth® server, capable of managing the connections and disconnections of the different remote controls to the TVC television.
[0067] The flowchart in Figure 3 can be adapted to this context, as illustrated in Figure 4.
[0068] The user turns on the TVC television using the conventional RCU-TVC remote control during a step referenced Eli. During a step referenced E12, he sends a command to the TVC television, for example a command to change channels, and uses the same RCU-TVC remote control to do so. The command detection module integrated in the TVC television therefore detects the preferred use of the conventional RCU-TVC remote control by the user, to the detriment of the RCU-SmartTV smart remote control. The Bluetooth® server integrated in the TVC television can then proceed to the immediate disconnection, during a step referenced E16, of this unused RCU-SmartTV remote control, so that it goes into standby mode and thus reduces its power consumption.
[0069] Alternatively, this disconnection E16 is only carried out at the end of an observation period during which it is ensured that no additional command is received from the RCU-SmartTV smart remote control. In this case, the connected television TVC initializes a time delay during a step E13, and checks, throughout the duration D of this time delay, the possible reception (step E14) of a command from the RCU-SmartTV remote control. The disconnection E16 of the remote control to be put on standby is only carried out at the end of the time delay initialized in E13 (step End_Temp referenced E15), and on the condition that no command from the RCU-SmartTV remote control has been received during step E14.
[0070] We now present, in relation to Figure 5, the hardware structure of a rendering device according to an embodiment of the invention. Such a rendering device is for example the connected TVC television whose operation has been illustrated in relation to Figure 4, or the assembly consisting of the CLETV multimedia stream player terminal and the TV rendering terminal, whose operation has been illustrated in relation to Figure 3.
[0071] Such a restitution device 10 is configured to receive commands from at least two separate remote control devices (not shown in FIG. 5). It comprises: a DET_CMD module for detecting the reception of commands from one or other of the remote control devices; a DCNX_RCU module for disconnecting one or other of these remote control devices.
[0072] The term module can correspond to a software component as well as to a hardware component or a set of hardware and software components, a software component itself corresponding to one or more computer programs or sub-programs or more generally to any element of a program capable of implementing a function or a set of functions.
[0073] The rendering device 10 conventionally comprises memories M associated with a CPU processor. The memories can be of the ROM (Read Only Memory) or RAM (Random Access Memory) type or even Flash. It also comprises an input / output I / O module which can be connected by wired or wireless link 1 to other equipment in the home audiovisual network. For example, the link 1 is a wired HDMI type link, or a wireless Bluetooth® type link. The various commands received from the remote control devices are received by the I / O module. The rendering device 10 also comprises a multimedia stream rendering module, denoted REST.This module may be a screen integrated into the rendering device 10 (for example in the case of a connected TVC television); it may also be a rendering terminal (for example a TV television) connected by an HDMI link to a multimedia stream reader terminal (for example a TV key or a decoder) integrating the other modules of the device 10 of figure 5.
[0074] Figure 5 illustrates only one particular way, among several possible ways, of producing the rendering device 10, so that it performs the steps of the method detailed above, in relation to Figures 1 to 4 (in any one of the different embodiments, or in a combination of these embodiments). Indeed, these steps can be carried out indifferently on a reprogrammable computing machine (a PC computer, a DSP processor or a microcontroller) executing a program comprising a sequence of instructions, or on a dedicated computing machine (for example a set of logic gates such as an FPGA or an ASIC, or any other hardware module).
[0075] In the case where the restitution device 10 is produced with a reprogrammable computing machine, the corresponding program (i.e. the sequence of instructions) may be stored in a removable storage medium (such as for example a floppy disk, a CD-ROM or a DVD-ROM) or not, this storage medium being partially or totally readable by a computer or a processor.
