AI Technical Summary
Current laminated glazing configurations for vehicle windshields with decreasing interlayer thickness lead to unevenness and noise due to mismatch between the glass sheets and the seal, causing aesthetic and aerodynamic issues.
A profiled seal with a base fixed to the interior face of the outer glass sheet and a lateral bead that adapts to the reduced thickness of the glazed element, ensuring the seal rests only on the outer glass sheet, independent of the interlayer thickness, and is bonded to the vehicle bodywork without contact with the interlayer.
This configuration reduces or eliminates external misalignment between the seal and the glass sheet, enhancing aesthetics and reducing noise by decoupling the seal's adaptation from the interlayer's thickness variation, thus improving the aerodynamic conditions and implementation ease.

Abstract
Description
LAMINATED GLAZING COMPRISING AN OUTER SHEET OF GLASS ON THE EDGE, AN INTERLAYER IN THE CORNER AND A SEAL
[0001] The invention relates to a laminated glazing comprising an interlayer having a decreasing thickness in the direction of the length of the glazing, in particular intended to form a motor vehicle windshield. Such glazing makes it possible to reduce, or even eliminate, parasitic double images.
[0002] Known from the prior art is international patent application WO 2009 / 071135 A1, which discloses a curved windshield for a vehicle comprising an interlayer made of a thermoplastic and which is arranged between an outer glass sheet and an inner glass sheet. The interlayer has a thickness that decreases longitudinally. The maximum thickness is located at the top of the windshield and gradually decreases to the bottom of the windshield to reach a minimum thickness. This specific dimensional configuration of the interlayer is known as a "wedge angle" in English or, in French, couche intercalaire en coin. A wedge interlayer is implemented to reduce, or even eliminate, double images appearing on a curved windshield.Indeed, double images commonly occur during night driving, from the headlight images of oncoming vehicles or other bright light sources. They are the result of multiple reflections on the windshield surfaces when a portion of the incident light beams, called the secondary beam, leaves the windshield at an angle to the primary beam. The angle between the primary beam and the secondary beam is called the double image angle. Because the intensity of the secondary beam is very low, the secondary beam is only visible if it can be distinguished from the dark surroundings, for example, when night has fallen.
[0003] This problem can be particularly annoying for glazing equipped with a so-called “head-up display”.
[0004] The thermoplastic generally used for the corner interlayer is polyvinyl butyral, better known by the acronym "PVB". The curved windshield also includes, on its periphery, a seal made of a polymer. The seal is arranged on the upper part of the windshield as well as on the side parts. The disadvantage of the current configuration of the glazing is that the side parts of the seal do not adapt to the reduction in thickness of the glazing from top to bottom. This results in a misalignment which is aesthetically unpleasant because it is visible to the naked eye. In addition, noise can be generated due to unfavorable aerodynamic conditions. This noise is obviously unpleasant for the driver and passengers of the vehicle.
[0005] The prior art also discloses from European patent application No. EP 1025986 a laminated glazing configuration with an external overhang. The outer glass sheet has an overhang relative to the inner glass sheet and comprises a profiled seal. The interlayer also has an overhang relative to the inner glass sheet but not relative to the outer glass sheet. A bead of adhesive bonds the outer glass sheet, the interlayer and an intermediate element to an adjacent bodywork rebate.
[0006] The aim of the invention is therefore to overcome the drawbacks of the prior art by proposing a glazing configuration making it possible to obtain a reduced misalignment, or even a flush fit, between the glass sheets, the seal and the vehicle bay.
[0007] The present invention is thus based on the discovery that, surprisingly, it is possible to provide a profiled seal with a base fixed to the glazed element and with a lateral bead (or lip) to equip the edges of a glazed element whose thickness is reduced, and in particular when the profiled seal is a prefabricated seal (technology called "pre-assembly" in the glassmaking field). An aim of the invention is thus to propose a glazing with a profiled seal which adapts well and easily to the reduction in thickness of the glazed element, for easier and less expensive implementation.
[0008] To do this, the invention thus relates, in its broadest sense, to glazing for a vehicle, in particular for a motor vehicle, according to claim 1.
[0009] Said glazing comprises a laminated glazed element comprising an outer glass sheet, an inner glass sheet, said glass sheets being assembled by means of an interlayer, said glazing having a first longitudinal edge, a second longitudinal edge, a first lateral edge and a second lateral edge, at least said lateral edges comprising a joint, said interlayer having a laterally non-constant thickness, with a maximum thickness along said first longitudinal edge and a minimum thickness along said second longitudinal edge, said thickness gradually decreasing between said first longitudinal edge and said second longitudinal edge.
[0010] Said glazing is remarkable in that said outer glass sheet has an overhang forming a transverse offset oriented centrifugally relative to the inner glass sheet and to the interlayer, the edges of the inner glass sheet and of the interlayer being in the extension of one another, said seal having a base and a lateral bead, said base being fixed to an inner face of said outer glass sheet; said base preferably being fixed only to said inner face of the outer glass sheet (not fixed to the other elements of the glazed element); said seal preferably being fixed only to said inner face of the outer glass sheet (not fixed to an edge of said outer glass sheet, nor to an outer face of said outer glass sheet; nor to the other elements of the glazed element).
[0011] Thus, due to the fact that the edges of the inner glass sheet and the interlayer are in the extension of each other while the edge of the outer glass sheet is further away in the centrifugal direction (due to the overhang), then only the inner glass sheet and the interlayer are subject to the influence of the reduction in the thickness of the interlayer; neither the outer glass sheet, nor the seal, nor the glue intended to bond the glazing to the vehicle body is influenced (impacted) by the reduction in the thickness of the interlayer.
[0012] Said base of the seal is thus fixed on an inner face of the overhang of said outer glass sheet.
[0013] The configuration proposed by the present invention makes it possible to reduce, or even eliminate, an external misalignment between the glazing seal and the outer glass sheet. The seal rests solely on the outer glass sheet, thus eliminating the influence of the variation in thickness of the interlayer.
[0014] Said second lateral edge may be parallel to said first lateral edge. Said second longitudinal edge may be parallel to said first longitudinal edge. Said lateral edges may be oriented substantially perpendicular to said longitudinal edges.
[0015] Preferably, said first longitudinal edge is a high edge (intended to be arranged in a high part of a bay of the vehicle) and said second longitudinal edge is a low edge (intended to be arranged in a low part of the bay of the vehicle).
[0016] Said profiled seal preferably comprises a single base over its entire extent and a single lateral bead over its entire extent. Said base preferably has a constant profile over its entire extent. Said bead preferably has a constant profile over its entire extent.
[0017] Preferably, said overhang is present only along at least a portion of said first lateral edge and along at least a portion of said second lateral edge, and preferably along the entirety of said first lateral edge and along the entirety of said second lateral edge.
[0018] Preferably, said overhang is not present at all along said second, lower longitudinal edge; it may be present along said first, upper longitudinal edge or be absent from this first, upper longitudinal edge.
[0019] Said base preferably extends from the edge which is located between the edge of the outer pane and the inner face of the outer pane, to the edge of the interlayer and the inner glass sheet, without necessarily being in contact with them. To have a sufficient dimension, said base thus covers the inner face of the overhang of the outer glass sheet.
[0020] Said beading preferably extends from said edge of the outer window, further than this edge in the centrifugal direction.
[0021] Said base is preferably fixed to said inner face along the entirety of said first lateral edge and said second lateral edge. It may further be to said inner face along the entirety of said first longitudinal edge and / or along the entirety of said second longitudinal edge.
[0022] Preferably, said base is fixed to said inner face by an adhesive tape, preferably having a constant thickness.
[0023] Preferably, the outer glass sheet has an inner face, the seal has an outer face, the adhesive tape has an outer face in contact with said inner face of the outer glass sheet and an inner face in contact with said outer face of said seal.
[0024] Preferably, the adhesive tape is a double-sided adhesive made of acrylic or having an acrylic-coated polyethylene backing.
[0025] Preferably, said seal has a constant profile over its entire extent.
[0026] Preferably, the overhang has a length of at least 4.0 mm and preferably between 2 and 4 times the thickness of the outer glass sheet, or even between 2.5 and 3 times, in order to provide sufficient space for accommodating said base under said overhang.
[0027] Preferably, the seal comprises, seen in cross section, a first part and a second part. Preferably, the first part has a Shore A hardness greater than the hardness of the second part.
[0028] Preferably, the inner glass sheet has a centripetally oriented edge and the seal has a centrifugally oriented edge, the distance between the edge of the inner glass sheet and the edge of the seal being between 0.1 times and 2.0 times the maximum thickness of the interlayer.
[0029] The present invention also relates to a vehicle, in particular a motor vehicle, according to claim 10, comprising a body, glazing and a bead of glue bonding said glazing to said body.
[0030] This glazing of this vehicle comprises a laminated glazed element, comprising an outer glass sheet having an edge, an inner glass sheet having an edge, said glass sheets being assembled by means of an interlayer having an edge, said glazing having a first longitudinal edge, a second longitudinal edge, a first lateral edge and a second lateral edge, at least said lateral edges comprising a joint, said interlayer having a thickness that is not constant laterally, with a maximum thickness along said first longitudinal edge and a minimum thickness along said second longitudinal edge, said thickness gradually decreasing between said first longitudinal edge and said second longitudinal edge.
[0031] Said glazing of this vehicle is remarkable in that:- said outer glass sheet has an overhang forming a transverse offset oriented centrifugally relative to the inner glass sheet and to the interlayer,- said seal has a base and a lateral bead, said base being fixed to an inner face of said outer glass sheet, said base preferably being fixed only to said inner face of the outer glass sheet, said seal preferably being fixed only to said inner face of the outer glass sheet, and- said bead of glue is located between an inner face of the inner glass sheet and a rebate of said bodywork located opposite an edge of said inner glass sheet.
[0032] Preferably, said bead of glue is without contact with said interlayer; said bead of glue is preferably without contact with said bead of the joint and more preferably without contact with said base of the joint.
[0033] The glazing of this vehicle may be glazing according to the invention.
[0034] An embodiment of the present invention will be described below, by way of non-limiting example, with reference to the appended figures in which: - illustrates a top view of a glazing unit, also called a windshield, intended to be located in a bay at the front of a motor vehicle according to a preferred embodiment of the invention; - schematically illustrates a detailed and sectional view, along a plane A-A', of the glazing unit illustrated in the ; and - schematically illustrates a detailed and sectional view, similar to that of the and showing the bonding of the glazing unit to a bodywork rebate.
[0035] The present invention is described by way of example in the context of an application as fixed glazing 1 for a vehicle. This glazing closes a bay by creating a separation between an exterior space E, which is exterior to the vehicle, and an interior space I, which is interior to the vehicle. The notions of "exterior" and "interior" are therefore considered in the present document respectively in relation to this exterior space E (or oriented towards this exterior space) and this interior space I (or oriented towards this interior space).
[0036] Illustrates a top view of a motor vehicle glazing 1, which is here a windshield, according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, intended to be installed in a bay (not shown).
[0037] Glazing 1 can form a windshield, a roof, a side or rear window of a vehicle. The vehicle can be a land road vehicle, such as a car, a truck, a bus, a tram, a rail vehicle. It can be a fixed glazing (not movable in the vehicle's frame of reference).
[0038] The glazing 1 comprises a glazed element 2 which is curved (i.e. not flat) and laminated.
[0039] The glazing 1 extends transversely along the axis generally called the “X axis” of the vehicle, in particular a motor vehicle, which is the central longitudinal axis of advance of the motor vehicle equipped with the glazing according to the invention and which corresponds to the X axis. The glazing 1 further extends along the Y and Z axes, which are respectively the transverse axis and the vertical axis of the motor vehicle.
[0040] In the context of this document, the notion of "centripetal" and that of "centrifugal" is to be considered in the plane of the sheet, expressed in relation to the center of the glazing, according to the X and Y axes; the centripetal direction is in the direction of this center while the centrifugal direction moves away from this center.
[0041] In the embodiment(s) of the invention, a glazing unit 1 is described comprising a glazed element 10. Each glazed element may be composite, i.e. made up of several sheets of material between which at least one interlayer of adhesive material is inserted, in the case of laminated glazing units. The sheet(s) of material may be mineral, in particular glass, having for example undergone annealing or tempering, or organic, in particular plastic material such as polyvinyl butyral. The interlayer preferably contains at least one thermoplastic plastic material, preferably polyvinyl butyral (PVB), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), and / or polyethylene terephthalate (PET).However, the thermoplastic interlayer may also contain, for example, polyurethane (PU), polypropylene (PP), polyacrylate, polyethylene (PE), polycarbonate (PC), polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl chloride, polyacetate resin, casting resins, acrylates, fluorinated ethylene-propylene, polyvinyl fluoride and / or ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene, or copolymers or mixtures thereof. The thermoplastic interlayer may be formed from one or more superimposed thermoplastic films.
[0042] The glazing 1 has a first longitudinal edge 1s intended to be arranged in the upper part of the bay of the motor vehicle, namely the part closest to the roof of the vehicle and a second longitudinal edge 1i intended to be arranged in the lower part of the motor vehicle, namely the part closest to the engine hood. The glazing 1 further has a first lateral edge 1a and a second lateral edge 1b located on either side of the first and second longitudinal edges 1s, 1i.
[0043] The glazing 1 comprises a seal 7 having a central portion 7c arranged along the first longitudinal edge 1s of the glazing 1, a first lateral portion 7a arranged along the first lateral edge 1a and a second lateral portion 7b arranged along the second lateral edge 1b. The seal 7 is, for example, obtained by extrusion. The seal 7 is made of a polymer such as polyvinyl chloride, known by the acronym PVC, or ethylene-propylene-diene monomer, known by the acronym EPDM. The seal may also be made of a vulcanizable thermoplastic elastomer, which is also known by the acronym TPV. The seal 7 may be made of a single material or of two materials. The seal 7 may thus have a single hardness or two different hardnesses, due to the presence of two different materials. These materials preferably belong to the same family. The two-part seal 7 is, for example, obtained by extrusion.
[0044] The windshield shown in lane does not have a central portion along the second edge 1i. Such a glazing 1 may include, for example, a head-up display (HUD for "Head-Up Display" in English). Information is projected to assist the driver of the motor vehicle in his driving, for example the speed of the motor vehicle or certain information from the navigation system may be displayed. Generally, the information is projected in the lower part of the driver's field of vision. Double images may appear, particularly at night from the headlight images of oncoming motor vehicles. The glazing 1 includes an interlayer (not visible in the) making it possible to attenuate or even eliminate the double images.
[0045] Referring now to the, there is illustrated a sectional view, along a section plane A-A' visible on the, of the first lateral portion 1a of the glazing 1. The following description is also valid for the second lateral portion 1b, mutatis mutandis. The glazing 1 comprises an outer glass sheet 2 having a thickness e2 and an inner glass sheet 3 having a thickness e3. An interlayer 4, having a thickness e4, is arranged between the outer glass sheet 2 and the inner glass sheet 3. The thickness e4 of the interlayer 4 is substantially constant in the direction of the width of the glazing 1, that is to say along the orientation of the Y axis, and has a maximum thickness e 4’ along the first longitudinal edge 1s and a minimum thickness e 4’’along the second longitudinal edge 1i. Thus, when the glazing 1 is installed in the bay of the motor vehicle, the thickness of the interlayer 4 has a maximum thickness e 4’ in the top of the glazing 1 and a minimum thickness e 4’’in the bottom of the glazing 1. The thickness of the windshield 1 decreases in the same way. The outer glass sheet 2 has a centrifugal transverse offset relative to the inner glass sheet 3 and the interlayer 4 so as to have an overhang 8. The outer glass sheet 2 has an inner face 2' oriented towards the interior I and an outer face 2'' oriented towards the exterior E. The first lateral portion 7a of the seal 7 has an outer face 7' arranged opposite the inner face 2' of the outer glass sheet 2 at the overhang 8. The outer glass sheet 2, the interlayer 4 and the inner glass sheet 3 have, respectively, an edge 21, 41 and 31 oriented, all, perpendicular to the centripetal and centrifugal directions. The edges 31, 41 of the inner glass sheet 3 and of the interlayer 4 are in the extension of each other.
[0046] The overhang 8 has a length l8 between the edge 21 of the outer glass sheet 2 and both the edge 31 of the inner glass sheet 31 and the edge 41 of the interlayer 4. Preferably, the length l8 is at least 4.0 mm and is between 2 and 4 times the thickness e2 of the outer glass sheet 2.
[0047] The seal 7 here consists of two distinct parts: a base 70 and a lateral bead 70'. The base 70 is a part of the seal 7 which is fixed to an inner face 2' of the outer glass sheet 2 by extending to the longitudinal or lateral edge of the outer glass sheet 2. The bead 70' is a part of the seal 7 which is not fixed to the glazed element and which extends from the base (i.e. from the edge 21 in the state installed in the glazing) further than the base 70 (i.e. further than the edge 21 in the state installed in the glazing) in a centrifugal direction. The profiled seal is fixed to the glazed element 10 only due to the fact that only the base 70 is fixed to the inner face 2' and only to this inner face 2' (neither to the interlayer 4 nor to the inner glass sheet 3). Thus, the base 70 does not extend opposite the edge 21; it is the bead which extends opposite the edge 21.The base 70 covers almost all, or even all, of the inner face of the overhang 8 of the outer glass sheet 2.
[0048] In the installed state, the bead 70' extends from the edge 21, being here in surface continuity with an outer face 2'' of the outer glass sheet 2 (the bead 70' is "flush", in English, with the outer face 2'' of the outer glass sheet).
[0049] The seal 7 and the outer glass sheet 2 are assembled by means of a double-sided adhesive tape 9 having an inner face 9', an outer face 9'' and a thickness e9. The inner face 9' of the adhesive tape 9 is in contact with the outer face 7' of the seal 7 and more precisely the outer face of the base 70. The outer face 9'' of the adhesive tape 9 is in contact with the inner face 2' of the outer glass sheet 2. The adhesive tape 9 is thus applied only to the outer glass sheet 2 which has a substantially constant thickness e2. This configuration thus makes it possible to obtain a windshield 1 having a controlled and constant misalignment between the seal 7 and the outer glass sheet 2.
[0050] Preferably, the outer glass sheet 2 has a thickness e2 that is substantially constant and between 1.6 mm and 2.1 mm. Preferably, the inner glass sheet 3 has a thickness e3 that is substantially constant and between 1.6 mm and 2.1 mm. Preferably, the thicknesses e2, e3 of the outer and inner glass sheets 2, 3 are substantially equal. Alternatively, the thicknesses e2, e3 of the outer and inner glass sheets 2, 3 are different. Preferably, the interlayer 4 has a maximum thickness e4 ’ , along the first longitudinal edge 1s, between 1.50 mm and 1.10 mm, or even between 1.30 mm and 1.20 mm. Preferably, the interlayer 4 has a minimum thickness e 4’’ , along the second longitudinal edge 1i, between 0.9 mm and 0.60 mm, or even between 0.80 mm and 0.70 mm. In a particular embodiment of the invention, the interlayer 4 has a maximum thickness e 4’equal to 1.26 mm and a minimum thickness e 4’’ equal to 0.76 mm.
[0051] In the embodiment illustrated in the, the seal 7 comprises a first part 71 having a Shore A hardness greater than the hardness of a second part 72. The seal 7 may for example be made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM).
[0052] Here the first part 71 has a Shore A hardness of 70 to 95 and the second part 72 has a Shore A hardness of 50 to 65. The fact that the second part has a lower hardness makes it possible to limit the stressing forces on the bodywork; The fact that the first part has a higher hardness facilitates the stability of the bonding on glass.
[0053] When the seal is made of a single material, its Shore A hardness is preferably between 50 and 95.
[0054] The adhesive tape 9 is a double-sided adhesive comprising an acrylic-coated polyethylene backing. The seal 7 has an edge 73 oriented centrifugally and arranged opposite the edge 31 of the inner glass sheet 3. The distance d between the edge 73 of the seal 7 and the edge 31 of the inner glass sheet 3 is between 0.1 times and 2.0 times the maximum thickness e 4’ of the interlayer 4 in order to be sufficiently compact.
[0055] Thanks to the invention, along the entire length of the lateral edges 1a, 1b, the bead 70' retains its profile and can extend from the edge 21 while being in surface continuity with the outer face 2'' of the outer glass sheet (the bead 70' is "flush", in English, with the outer face of the glazed element).
[0056] Illustrates a part of a vehicle according to the invention, in particular a part of a motor vehicle. This vehicle comprises a body, materialized here by a rebate F, a glazing 1 and a bead of glue G bonding said glazing to said body, and more precisely to the rebate F. The rebate F may in particular be a metal sheet which makes at least part of the circumference of the opening that the glazing 1 must close, or even the entire circumference of the opening that the glazing 1 must close.
[0057] Glazing 1 is fixed glazing: it is firmly glued to the rebate F, and therefore to the bodywork, by the bead of glue G.
[0058] The glazing 1 comprises a laminated glazed element 10, comprising an outer glass sheet 2 having an edge 21, an inner glass sheet 3 having an edge 31, said glass sheets 2, 3 being assembled by means of an interlayer 4 having an edge 41, said glazing 1 having a first longitudinal edge 1s, a second longitudinal edge 1i, a first lateral edge 1a and a second lateral edge 1b, at least said lateral edges 1a, 1b comprising a joint 7, said interlayer 4 having a thickness e4 which is not constant laterally, with a maximum thickness e4' along said first longitudinal edge 1s and a minimum thickness e4'' along said second longitudinal edge 1i, said thickness e4 gradually decreasing between said first longitudinal edge 1s and said second longitudinal edge 1i.
[0059] For this vehicle:- said outer glass sheet 2 has an overhang 8 forming a transverse offset oriented centrifugally relative to the inner glass sheet 3 and to the interlayer 4,- said seal 7 has a base 70 and a lateral bead 70', said base 70 being fixed to an inner face 2' of said outer glass sheet 2, said base 70 preferably being fixed only to said inner face 2' of the outer glass sheet 2, said seal preferably being fixed only to said inner face 2' of the outer glass sheet 2 and said bead of glue G is located between an inner face 3' of the inner glass sheet 3 and a rebate F of said bodywork located opposite an edge of said inner glass sheet 3.
[0060] As illustrated, the bead of glue G is preferably without contact with said interlayer 4; said bead of glue is preferably without contact with said bead 71 of the seal 7 and more preferably without contact with said base 70 of the seal.
[0061] The bead 71 of the seal preferably rests on the rebate F. This rest provides a constant reference; it is not influenced by the fact that the thickness of the intermediate layer 4 gradually decreases between the first longitudinal edge 1s and the second longitudinal edge 1i.
