Abstract
Description
[0001] SYSTEM FOR ADAPTIVE PLAYBACK OF AN ORCHESTRAL
[0002] BACKING
[0003] The present invention relates to a system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing, particularly, although not exclusively, useful and practical in the study and practice of a soloist musician who plays a musical instrument that can be accompanied by, or inserted in, an orchestra.
[0004] In music, in particular classical music, the differences in interpretation of progression, tempo and dynamics (for example accelerando, trattenuto, differences in sound volume, crescendo, diminuendo, etc.) are fundamentally important and distinguish the characteristics of every musician.
[0005] When a soloist musician interacts with an orchestra, the orchestra conductor and the soloist musician coordinate the musical performance. In other words, the orchestra conductor acts as an intermediary between the soloist musician and the orchestra, making the right interpretative choices, so that the overall musical performance is consistent and follows the interpretation chosen by the soloist musician.
[0006] However, for musicians (or aspiring musicians) who follow (or who intend to follow) a career as a soloist or as a concert performer, it is extremely difficult to be able to practice with an entire orchestra available, or part of one, mainly for economic, organizational and logistical reasons. Furthermore, in concerts, it is extremely difficult to have the space and resources necessary for the performance of concerts with the physical presence of an entire orchestra, or part of one.
[0007] Nowadays, solutions are known which entail the prerecording of an orchestral backing of interest without the part of the soloist musician (known as “minus one”), so as to enable soloist musicians to play their part together with the prerecorded orchestral backing.
[0008] However, these known solutions are not devoid of drawbacks, among which is the fact that the prerecorded orchestral backing cannot be modified and is played back faithfully, with no possibility for interaction and / or coordination with the soloist musician.
[0009] The impossibility of modifying the prerecorded orchestral backing derives from the fact that the reading and playback of the performance of the orchestra are constant and continuous over time, with no possibility to modify the speed (i.e. the tempo) of reading / playback or the sound volume of said prerecorded orchestral backing.
[0010] The aim of the present invention is to overcome the limitations of the known art described above, by devising a system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing that makes it possible to obtain better effects than those that can be obtained with conventional solutions and / or similar effects at lower cost and with higher performance levels.
[0011] Within this aim, an object of the present invention is to devise a system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing that makes it possible to modify the agogic accents (slow / fast), i.e. the speed or tempo of reading / playback, of the orchestral backing, in real time, without altering its intonation and so as to follow the interpretation chosen by a soloist musician.
[0012] Another object of the present invention is to devise a system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing that makes it possible to modify the dynamic (soft / loud), i.e. the sound volume or the sound intensity, of the orchestral backing, in real time, without altering its intonation and so as to follow the interpretation chosen by a soloist musician.
[0013] Another object of the present invention is to devise a system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing that enables a soloist musician to be actively accompanied in study and practice, but also in concert performance by an orchestral backing that follows his or her variations of tempo and / or of sound volume without restricting him or her to a predetermined and non-modifiable interpretation.
[0014] Another object of the present invention is to devise a system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing that makes it possible to simulate the performance experience, and therefore the interaction, of a soloist musician with an orchestra, in all situations in which it is not possible to be in the physical presence of said orchestra, or part of it.
[0015] Another object of the present invention is to devise a system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing that makes it possible to improve the understanding between an orchestra conductor and a soloist musician, by offering the possibility to execute rehearsals that can be replicated at will so as to define the interpretation of the concert prior to rehearsing with a real orchestra.
[0016] Another object of the present invention is to provide a system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing that is highly reliable, easily and practically implemented, and economically competitive when compared to the known art.
[0017] This aim and these and other objects which will become better apparent hereinafter are achieved by a system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing, comprising an audio playback device, at least one loudspeaker, and at least one microphone which is associated with a solo musical instrument, wherein said audio playback device is configured to play back an orchestral backing and to generate a first audio signal corresponding to said playback of said orchestral backing, said loudspeaker is configured to diffuse into the environment said first audio signal corresponding to said playback of said orchestral backing, and said microphone is configured to acquire a performance of said solo musical instrument and to generate a second audio signal corresponding to said acquisition of said performance, characterized in that it further comprises a control device configured to adjust said first audio signal corresponding to said playback of said orchestral backing, performed by said audio playback device, on the basis of said second audio signal corresponding to said acquisition of said performance of said solo musical instrument, performed by said microphone.
[0018] Further characteristics and advantages of the present invention will become better apparent from the detailed description of a preferred, but not exclusive, embodiment of the system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the invention, illustrated by way of non-limiting example with the aid of the accompanying drawings wherein:
[0019] Figure 1 shows a first variation of an embodiment of the system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the present invention;
[0020] Figure 2 shows a second variation of an embodiment of the system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the present invention;
[0021] Figure 3 shows a third variation of an embodiment of the system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the present invention;
[0022] Figure 4 shows a fourth variation of an embodiment of the system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the present invention;
[0023] Figure 5 shows a fifth variation of an embodiment of the system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the present invention.
[0024] With reference to the figures, the system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the present invention, generally designated by the reference numeral 10, comprises substantially a control device 12, an audio playback device 14, at least one loudspeaker 26, and at least one microphone 22 which is associated or can be associated with a solo musical instrument 20, for example a piano (as shown in the figures), played by a soloist musician.
[0025] The control device 12 is functionally connected to the audio playback device 14, and vice versa. In an embodiment, the control device 12 and the audio playback device 14 can be combined in a single device. The audio playback device 14 is functionally connected to the at least one loudspeaker 26, and vice versa. The audio playback device 14 is functionally connected to the at least one microphone 22, and vice versa.
[0026] The audio playback device 14 of the system 10 according to the invention is configured to play back a digital audio backing of the orchestral type without the part of the solo musical instrument 20, in short an orchestral backing, and to generate a first audio signal corresponding to this playback. The audio playback device 14 is further configured to send this first audio signal to the at least one loudspeaker 26.
[0027] The clock or tempo of the orchestral backing can be defined on the basis of an interpretative and executive reference model chosen in advance. By way of non-limiting example, the playback of the orchestral backing can be: stereophonic, quadrophonic, pentaphonic, hexaphonic, nonaphonic. Again by way of non-limiting example, the sampling frequency of the orchestral backing can be 48 kHz at 24 bits.
[0028] In an embodiment, the orchestral backing can be prerecorded and stored in the audio playback device 14. In particular, the orchestral backing can be prerecorded and stored in a memory (not shown) comprised in the audio playback device 14. This memory of the audio playback device 14 can comprise one or more orchestral backings.
[0029] In an embodiment, the orchestral backing can be generated autonomously by the audio playback device 14. In particular, the orchestral backing can be generated by a generation module (not shown) which is comprised in the audio playback device 14 and is configured, by way of adapted artificial intelligence techniques (for example machine learning, deep learning, transfer learning, unsupervised learning, statistical models and mathematical models), to autonomously generate the orchestral backing following, as time goes on, the performance of the solo musical instrument 20 played by the soloist musician, this solo performance being acquired by the at least one microphone 22.
[0030] Advantageously, the orchestral backing can be constituted by a combination of a plurality of digital audio tracks, recorded or generated separately, where each audio track corresponds to the performance of one of the, or of a homogeneous group of, musical instruments that make up the orchestra that performs the orchestral backing.
[0031] The at least one loudspeaker 26 of the system 10 according to the invention is configured to emit into the environment the first audio signal that corresponds to the orchestral backing played back by the audio playback device 14.
[0032] With particular reference to Figure 1, the system 10 for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the invention can comprise two loudspeakers 26, so as to be able to have a playback, and therefore an emission, of the orchestral backing of the stereophonic type.
[0033] With particular reference to Figure 2, the system 10 for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the invention can comprise four loudspeakers 26, so as to be able to have a playback, and therefore an emission, of the orchestral backing of the quadrophonic type.
[0034] With particular reference to Figure 3, the system 10 for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the invention can comprise five loudspeakers 26, so as to be able to have a playback, and therefore an emission, of the orchestral backing of the pentaphonic type.
[0035] With particular reference to Figure 4, the system 10 for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the invention can comprise six loudspeakers 26, so as to be able to have a playback, and therefore an emission, of the orchestral backing of the hexaphonic type.
[0036] With particular reference to Figure 5, the system 10 for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the invention can comprise nine loudspeakers 26, so as to be able to have a playback, and therefore an emission, of the orchestral backing of the nonaphonic type.
[0037] Finally, the system 10 for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the invention can comprise a respective loudspeaker 26 for each musical instrument that is part of the orchestra that has performed the orchestral backing, so as to be able to have a playback, and therefore an emission, of the orchestral backing that is substantially faithful to a real performance of the orchestral backing by the musical instruments that make up the orchestra.
[0038] Advantageously, each loudspeaker 26 can emit at least one of the digital audio tracks that can constitute the orchestral backing, where each audio track corresponds to the performance of one of the, or of a homogeneous group of, musical instruments that make up the orchestra that has performed the orchestral backing.
[0039] Advantageously, the playback, and therefore the emission, of the orchestral backing can be distributed, or rather spatialized, on a plurality of loudspeakers 26 so as to give a superior three-dimensionality, and therefore a better realism, to the emission of the orchestral backing in playback.
[0040] Advantageously, in cases where the system 10 for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the invention comprises at least three loudspeakers 26, these loudspeakers 26 can be arranged along at least two separate planes (as shown in Figure 5), so as to define at least two respective separate sound fronts which can give a superior three- dimensionality, and therefore a better realism, to the emission of the orchestral backing in playback.
[0041] With particular reference to Figure 5, the system 10 for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the invention can comprise nine loudspeakers 26, of which five are distributed along a first plane for a playback, and therefore an emission, of pentaphonic type, and of which four are distributed along a second plane for a playback, and therefore an emission, of quadrophonic type.
[0042] Preferably, the system 10 for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the present invention can further comprise at least one power device 24 interposed between the audio playback device 14 and the at least one loudspeaker 26. In other words, the audio playback device 14 and the at least one loudspeaker 26 can be connected through the power device 24.
[0043] The power device 24 is functionally connected to the at least one loudspeaker 26. The power device 24 is configured to amplify the first audio signal, corresponding to the orchestral backing, played back by the audio playback device 14 and to be emitted into the environment through the at least one loudspeaker 26.
[0044] Preferably, the system 10 for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the present invention can further comprise at least one audio management device 18 interposed between the audio playback device 14 and the at least one loudspeaker 26, as well as between the audio playback device 14 and the at least one microphone 22. In other words, the audio playback device 14 and the at least one loudspeaker 26 can be connected through the audio management device 18 and, similarly, the audio playback device 14 and the at least one microphone 22 can be connected through the audio management device 18.
[0045] The audio management device 18 can be external to the audio playback device 14 (as shown in the figures), or included in the audio playback device 14. The audio management device 18 is functionally connected to the audio playback device 14.
[0046] The audio management device 18 is configured to distribute the first audio signal, corresponding to the orchestral backing in playback, in output from the audio playback device 14 and intended for the at least one loudspeaker 26. The audio management device 18 is further configured to collect the second audio signal, corresponding to the acquisition of the performance of the solo musical instrument 20, acquired by the at least one microphone 22.
[0047] By way of non-limiting example, the audio management device 18 can be an audio card, model Scarlett 2i4 with 4 channels or Scarlett 18i20 (3rd generation) with 8 channels, made by the Focusrite company.
[0048] The at least one microphone 22 of the system 10 according to the invention is configured to acquire a performance of the solo musical instrument 20 played by the soloist musician, and to generate a second audio signal corresponding to this acquisition. Preferably, the microphone 22 can be of a contact microphone. Preferably, the system 10 for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the present invention can comprise two microphones 22. The at least one microphone 22 can further be configured to send this second audio signal to the audio playback device 14. The at least one microphone 22 can further be configured to send this second audio signal to the control device 12. The at least one microphone 22 can further be configured to send this second audio signal to the headphones 16.
[0049] A digital audio track of the clock or tempo of the orchestral backing can be associated with said orchestral backing. The audio track of the clock or tempo of the orchestral backing can be stored in, or generated by, the playback device 14 together with the orchestral backing itself. As mentioned, the clock or tempo of the orchestral backing can be defined on the basis of an interpretative and executive reference model chosen in advance.
[0050] A digital audio track, preferably in MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) format, of the part of the solo musical instrument 20 can be associated with the orchestral backing. The audio track of the part of the solo musical instrument 20 can be stored in, or generated by, the playback device 14 together with the orchestral backing. The audio track of the clock or tempo of the orchestral backing and the audio track of the part of the solo musical instrument 20 can be combined in a single stereophonic audio track.
[0051] It should be noted that the audio track of the clock or tempo of the orchestral backing, the audio track of the part of the solo musical instrument 20 and, if any, the stereophonic audio track resulting from the combination of the two are associated with the orchestral backing, but are not emitted into the environment by the at least one loudspeaker 26 as it happens to the orchestral backing.
[0052] The control device 12 of the system 10 according to the invention is configured to adjust, i.e. conduct, the playback of the orchestral backing performed by the audio playback device 14, and therefore the first audio signal corresponding to this playback, on the basis of the acquisition of the performance of the solo musical instrument 20 performed by the at least one microphone 22, and therefore on the basis of the second audio signal corresponding to this acquisition. The control device 12 is further configured to send a control signal to the audio playback device 14. Basically, the control device 12 commands, or conducts, the audio playback device 14, and therefore the playback of the orchestral backing, by way of the control signal.
[0053] Advantageously, the control device is configured to adjust the agogic accents (slow / fast), also known as speed or tempo, of the playback of the orchestral backing performed by the audio playback device 14. Advantageously, the control device is configured to adjust the dynamic (soft / loud), also known as sound volume or sound intensity, of the playback of the orchestral backing performed by the audio playback device 14.
[0054] The control device 12 can further be configured to adjust, or conduct, the playback of the orchestral backing on the basis of the track of the clock or tempo of the orchestral backing. The control device 12 can further be configured to adjust, or conduct, the playback of the orchestral backing on the basis of the audio track of the part of the solo musical instrument 20. The control device 12 can further be configured to adjust, or conduct, the playback of the orchestral backing on the basis of the stereophonic audio track resulting from the combination of the audio track of the clock or tempo of the orchestral backing and the audio track of the part of the solo musical instrument 20.
[0055] Preferably, the control device 12 is configured to adjust, or conduct, the playback of the orchestral backing on the basis of the second audio signal corresponding to the acquisition of the performance of the solo musical instrument 20, on the basis of the audio track of the clock or tempo of the orchestral backing, and on the basis of the audio track of the part of the solo musical instrument 20.
[0056] In an embodiment, the control device 12 is operated by a controller user or “conductor” and comprises manual control means (not shown) which can be operated by this user. By acting on the manual control means of the control device 12, the controller user adjusts the playback of the orchestral backing performed by the audio playback device 14. For example, the manual control means of the control device 12 can comprise one or more sliders, one or more knobs and / or one or more buttons.
[0057] By way of non-limiting example, the control device 12 can be a MIDI pad controller, model MPD 323, made by the Akai company.
[0058] Advantageously, the system 10 for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the invention can further comprise headphones 16 which are configured to enable a user, in particular the controller user, to listen to the acquisition of the performance of the solo musical instrument 20 played by the soloist musician, and therefore the second audio signal corresponding to this acquisition. The at least one microphone 22 can be functionally connected to the headphones 16, and vice versa. The audio playback device 14 can be functionally connected to the headphones 16, and vice versa. The headphones 16 can further be configured to enable the controller user to listen to the audio track of the clock or tempo of the orchestral backing. The headphones 16 can further be configured to enable the controller user to listen to the audio track of the part of the solo musical instrument 20. The headphones 16 can further be configured to enable the controller user to listen to the stereophonic audio track, resulting from the combination of the audio track of the clock or tempo of the orchestral backing and the audio track of the part of the solo musical instrument 20.
[0059] In practice, the controller user can listen to the second audio signal corresponding to the acquisition of the performance of the solo musical instrument 20, the audio track of the clock or tempo of the orchestral backing, and the audio track of the part of the solo musical instrument 20 using the headphones 16, and act on the manual control means of the control device 12 in order to adjust the playback of the orchestral backing performed by the audio playback device 14 on the basis of what the controller user hears.
[0060] Preferably, the audio management device 18 is interposed between the audio playback device 14 and the headphones 16. In other words, the audio playback device 14 and the headphones 16 can be connected by way of the audio management device 18.
[0061] The audio management device 18 is functionally connected to the headphones 16. The audio management device 18 is configured to distribute the second audio signal corresponding to the acquisition of the performance of the solo musical instrument 20, the audio track of the clock or tempo of the orchestral backing, and the audio track of the part of the solo musical instrument 20.
[0062] In an embodiment, the control device 12 comprises an automatic control module (not shown) which is configured, by way of adapted artificial intelligence techniques (for example machine learning, deep learning, transfer learning, unsupervised learning, statistical models and mathematical models), to autonomously adjust the playback of the orchestral backing performed by the audio playback device 14.
[0063] In an embodiment, the playback of the orchestral backing, i.e. the emission of the first audio signal corresponding to the orchestral backing, is accompanied by the playback of visual content, i.e. video and / or still images, which are configured also to visually recreate the orchestra conductor and / or the orchestra whose performance is being reproduced. For example, the playback of such visual content can be performed on one or more conveniently dimensioned screens or projectors. The playback of such visual content enables a soloist musician to gain confidence in the presence of the orchestra and to practice interaction between his or her own interpretation and the vision of the conductor.
[0064] In practice it has been found that the present invention fully achieves the set aim and objects. In particular, it has been seen that the system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing thus conceived makes it possible to overcome the qualitative limitations of the known art, in that it makes it possible to obtain better effects than those that can be obtained with conventional solutions and / or similar effects at lower cost and with higher performance levels.
[0065] An advantage of the system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the present invention consists in that it makes it possible to modify the agogic accents (slow / fast) and / or the dynamic accents (soft / loud) of the orchestral backing, in real time, without altering its intonation and so as to follow the interpretation chosen by a soloist musician.
[0066] Another advantage of the system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the present invention consists in that it enables a soloist musician to be actively accompanied in study and practice, but also in concert performance by an orchestral backing that follows his or her variations of tempo and / or of sound volume without restricting him or her to a predetermined and non-modifiable interpretation.
[0067] Another advantage of the system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the present invention consists in that it makes it possible to simulate the performance experience, and therefore the interaction, of a soloist musician with an orchestra, in all situations in which it is not possible to be in the physical presence of said orchestra, or part of it.
[0068] Another advantage of the system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the present invention consists in that it makes it possible to improve the understanding between an orchestra conductor and a soloist musician, by offering the possibility to execute rehearsals that can be replicated at will so as to define the interpretation of the concert prior to rehearsing with a real orchestra.
[0069] Although the system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the invention has been conceived in particular for the study and practice carried out by a soloist musician who plays a musical instrument that can be accompanied by, or inserted in, an orchestra, it can in any case be used, more generally, for any type of performance of a soloist musician. For example, the system for adaptive playback of an orchestral backing according to the invention can be used to execute concerts for a soloist and / or orchestra in venues that are too small, i.e. which have insufficient space, to be able to contain an entire orchestra, or part of one.
[0070] The invention thus conceived is susceptible of numerous modifications and variations, all of which are within the scope of the appended claims; by way of non-limiting example, the person skilled in the art will understand without effort that functions can also be provided for pausing and / or resuming the adaptive playback of the orchestral backing. Moreover, all the details may be substituted by other, technically equivalent elements.
[0071] In practice the materials employed, provided they are compatible with the specific use, and the contingent dimensions and shapes, may be any according to requirements and to the state of the art.
[0072] In conclusion, the scope of protection of the claims shall not be limited by the explanations or by the preferred embodiments illustrated in the description by way of examples, but rather the claims shall comprise all the patentable characteristics of novelty that reside in the present invention, including all the characteristics that would be considered as equivalent by the person skilled in the art.
[0073] The disclosures in Italian Patent Application No. 102022000010865 from which this application claims priority are incorporated herein by reference.
[0074] Where technical features mentioned in any claim are followed by reference signs, those reference signs have been included for the sole purpose of increasing the intelligibility of the claims and accordingly, such reference signs do not have any limiting effect on the interpretation of each element identified by way of example by such reference signs.
