Description

[0001] The present invention relates to a handle assembly for a motor vehicle and a method for mounting a door handle on a vehicle door for a motor vehicle.

[0002] Various devices are known for mounting door handle modules with a concealed door handle and a door handle mechanism on a handle recess in a door panel of a vehicle door of a motor vehicle. Such alignment devices comprise, for example, a cover plate for covering the door handle and a plurality of flexible centering pins protruding perpendicularly from the cover plate and formed integrally with the cover plate, via which the cover plate can be precisely positioned on a visible side of the door handle. Furthermore, a sealing device can be arranged around the door handle in a defined position via the centering pins, forming a gap. In this state, the door handle module can be passed from the inside of the vehicle door through the handle recess and can be precisely positioned on the door panel while maintaining a gap, and can be fixed to it, for example, using screws. The alignment device can then be removed from the outside of the vehicle door. Such an alignment device is known, for example, from documents CN 106 499 272 B and CN 110 485 838 A.

[0003] An alignment device for aligning a door handle for a vehicle door is known from document CN 218 406 994 U. The alignment device has several fixing means for fixing the alignment device to the door handle. The door handle can be aligned with a handle receptacle of the vehicle door via spring-loaded centering means of the alignment device. Such an alignment device has the disadvantage that attaching it to the door handle and disassembling it from the door handle after alignment is very complex. Document DE 10 2009 045 874 A1 discloses a handle device for a vehicle door, which has a first handle module that can be arranged from the inside of the vehicle door and a second handle module that can be arranged from the outside of the vehicle door. The handle modules have locking and counter-locking elements that can be engaged with one another in order to align the handle modules with one another. An additional targeted alignment of the handle modules with the vehicle door is not provided.

[0004] Document WO 2023 / 158 025 A1 discloses a handle assembly for a motor vehicle, in which an alignment device is arranged on a door handle for an assembly process and covers the outer side of the handle. The door handle can be arranged on a handle passage of a door panel and, when moved toward it, can be aligned on the door panel over the alignment device. After the handle assembly is attached to the door panel, the guide cover is removable. The guide cover ensures a uniform gap between the door handle and the door panel.

[0005] Document CN 114 278 168 A discloses a handle assembly with a handle cover held on a handle frame. A plurality of small alignment elements integrated into the handle assembly support a defined multi-axial alignment of the components during assembly and during installation in a handle opening of a door panel. Document EP 4 023 846 A1 discloses a handle assembly in which tolerance compensation between mounting holes and mounting bolts is ensured by an integrated alignment device. Document CN 113 216 768 A relates to a handle assembly in which alignment grooves are formed on an underside of the door handle.A separate alignment device, which can be inserted from the outside of the vehicle door, can be inserted into a gap between the door handle and the vehicle door in such a way that it engages the alignment grooves and thus aligns the door handle with the vehicle door in conjunction with additional catch hooks arranged on a door handle mechanism. After installation, the alignment device can be removed from the gap.

[0006] Conventional handle assemblies have the disadvantage that aligning the components is still very complex and requires precise manual positioning of the components to be joined. With flexible alignment devices, the sometimes very delicate centering devices can easily bend and are therefore only partially reusable.

[0007] It is therefore an object of the present invention to remedy, or at least partially remedy, the above-described disadvantages in a handle assembly for a motor vehicle. In particular, the object of the present invention is to provide a handle assembly for a motor vehicle and a method for mounting a door handle on a vehicle door for a motor vehicle that ensure reliable alignment of the components in a simple and cost-effective manner and / or require reduced material expenditure.

[0008] The above object is achieved by the patent claims. Accordingly, the object is achieved by a handle assembly for a motor vehicle having the features of independent claim 1 and by a method for mounting a door handle on a vehicle door for a motor vehicle having the features of independent claim 10. Further features and details of the invention emerge from the subclaims, the description, and the drawings. Features and details described in connection with the handle assembly according to the invention naturally also apply in connection with the method according to the invention, and vice versa, so that with regard to the disclosure of the individual aspects of the invention, reference is and can always be made to each other.

[0009] According to a first aspect of the invention, this object is achieved by a handle assembly for a motor vehicle. The handle assembly comprises a door handle mechanism and a door handle movably mounted on the door handle mechanism. The door handle is designed for placement in a recess of a vehicle door of the motor vehicle, forming a circumferential gap between the door handle and an inner side of the recess. According to the invention, a deformable alignment device for laterally aligning the door handle with respect to the recess is arranged on a circumferential outer edge of the door handle.

[0010] The handle assembly includes the door handle mechanism, which can be attached to the vehicle door via fastening devices such as screws, bolts, rivets, or the like. The door handle is attached to the door handle mechanism and is movably held by the door handle mechanism, so that the door handle mechanism can be actuated via the vehicle handle. The door handle mechanism can include a locking device for closing and opening the vehicle door or a coupling device for mechanically coupling to a locking device for closing and opening the vehicle door.

[0011] The door handle is designed for placement in the recess of the vehicle door such that a circumferential gap, preferably with a constant gap width, is formed between the door handle and the inside of the recess. The gap is preferably formed between the circumferential outer edge of the door handle and the inside of the recess. Within the scope of the invention, an outer edge of the handle is understood to mean, for example, a circumferential side of the door handle. The outer edge of the handle can also be formed as a curve. Furthermore, the outer edge of the handle can also have a plate-shaped section.Preferably, the door handle is designed to be movable via the door handle mechanism between a hidden position, in which the door handle can be arranged, for example, in alignment with the recess of the vehicle door, and an extended position, in which the door handle protrudes from the recess towards the outside of the vehicle door, for example to improve the operation of the door handle by a user of the vehicle door.

[0012] The alignment device is arranged on the circumferential outer edge of the door handle. The alignment device preferably extends along the entire circumferential outer edge of the door handle. The alignment device is designed to be deformable; for example, the alignment device can comprise a deformable material for this purpose or is formed from a deformable material. Due to the deformability, the alignment device can be arranged on the outer edge of the handle during manufacture of the handle assembly and can be removed from the door handle after installation on the vehicle door. Furthermore, a deformable alignment device reduces the risk of damage to the door handle during installation and removal of the alignment device. The alignment device is preferably designed to be elastically deformable, so that the alignment device can be adapted to be installed or removed. It expands and then contracts again during disassembly, ensuring a secure hold of the alignment device on the door handle, for example, through adhesion, clamping force, wrapping, or the like. The alignment device is thus removable from the handle assembly mounted on the vehicle door, so that the alignment device cannot impair the operation of the door handle.

[0013] The alignment device is also designed to enlarge the circumference of the door handle, so that the gap formed between the outer edge of the handle and the inside of the recess can be filled by the alignment device, preferably with a slight undersize or a slight oversize. Further preferably, the alignment device has a smooth and / or low-friction sliding surface, which improves sliding on the inside of the recess. In this way, the door handle can be aligned with the recess when moving into the recess via the interaction of the alignment device with the inside of the recess. To facilitate removal from the door handle, the alignment device can have one or more predetermined breaking points.

[0014] A handle assembly according to the invention has the advantage over conventional handle assemblies that it provides particularly easy alignment of the door handle to the recess using simple means and in a cost-effective manner, so that a circumferential gap between the door handle and the inside of the recess can be reliably and easily reproducibly adjusted with predefined gap dimensions. Thus, the handle assembly according to the invention is particularly suitable for mass production. Furthermore, the removability of the alignment device when the handle assembly is installed prevents the alignment device from interfering with the door handle during use of the motor vehicle.

[0015] According to a preferred further development of the invention, the alignment device can be provided in a handle assembly that is formed in one piece. In the context of the invention, a one-piece alignment device is understood to mean an alignment device that is manufactured monolithically from a material or a material mixture, for example, using an injection molding process or the like. The deformability, preferably elastic deformability, and the one-piece design of the alignment device ensure that the alignment device is held particularly well on the door handle, so that unintentional slipping off the door handle, for example during the alignment process of the door handle to the vehicle door, in which forces are transmitted via the alignment device, is better prevented. This has the advantage that mounting of the handle assembly on the vehicle door is further improved using simple means and in a cost-effective manner.

[0016] According to the invention, it is preferred that the alignment device comprises silicone or rubber or is formed from silicone or rubber. Such materials are readily available, inexpensive, and easy to process. Furthermore, these materials exhibit particularly good deformability, in particular particularly good elastic deformability, and thus good recovery to an original shape in a relieved state. Furthermore, the alignment device can also be produced using such materials directly on the door handle, so that installation on the door handle is no longer necessary. Removal from the door handle at the end of the assembly of the handle assembly can, for example, also be achieved by destroying the alignment device. This has the advantage that the assembly of the handle assembly on the vehicle door is further improved using simple means and in a cost-effective manner.

[0017] The alignment device further preferably has a cross member, via which a first region of the alignment device arranged on the outer edge of the handle is connected to a second region arranged on the outer edge of the handle and spaced from the first region. The alignment device thus has a base body which extends along the outer edge of the door handle. The first region and the second region are designed as regions of the base body and are spaced from one another. The first region is connected to the second region via the cross member. The cross member is preferably monolithic in design with the base body. According to the invention, further cross members can be provided, which preferably connect other regions of the base body to one another. The cross member preferably extends over a visible side of the door handle, i.e., a side of the door handle that, when installed, faces the outside of the vehicle door like an outer surface of the vehicle door. The cross member improves the stability of the alignment device and ensures that the alignment device is held securely in place on the door handle. This further reduces the risk of the alignment device slipping when aligning the door handle to the recess. This has the advantage of further improving the installation of the handle assembly on the vehicle door using simple means and in a cost-effective manner.

[0018] In a particularly preferred embodiment, it can be provided in a handle assembly that the first region is arranged opposite the second region. In the context of the invention, an opposite arrangement is understood in particular to mean that the first region is arranged on a first side of the alignment device and the second region is arranged on a second side of the alignment device, wherein the first side is opposite the second side. The first side and the second side are preferably designed as longitudinal sides of the alignment device. Preferably, the first side runs parallel to the second side. The first region and the second region are preferably arranged such that the stability of the alignment device is improved by the cross member in a particularly required manner, for example in regions which, without a cross member, can most easily slip off the outer edge of the handle during alignment. This has the advantage that the installation of the handle assembly on the vehicle door is further improved using simple means and in a cost-effective manner.

[0019] The alignment device preferably has a cap at one longitudinal end for covering the longitudinal end of the door handle. In the context of the invention, a cap is understood to mean, for example, a design in which the longitudinal end of the door handle is surrounded from several sides. In this case, a part of the visible side of the longitudinal end of the door handle is preferably also covered by the cap. In addition, the cap covers the outer edge(s) of the handle in the region of the longitudinal end of the door handle. The cap preferably engages behind the outer edges of the handle. More preferably, the cap covers part of a rear side of the longitudinal end of the door handle. The longitudinal end of the door handle is therefore preferably designed to be free-standing, making it easier to slide the cap over the longitudinal end. The stability of the alignment device is further improved by a cap. This also improves the hold of the alignment device on the door handle. This has the advantage that the installation of the handle assembly on the vehicle door is further improved using simple means and in a cost-effective manner.

[0020] According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the alignment device comprises a deformable base body for arrangement on the door handle and a plurality of centering elements, wherein the centering elements are held on the base body on sides of the base body facing away from the door handle. The base body is preferably formed from a deformable material. Preferably, the base body is formed from an elastically deformable material. More preferably, the base body is monolithic. The base body preferably covers at least 70% of a longitudinal extent of the handle outer edge. Particularly preferably, the base body covers over 80% of the longitudinal extent of the handle outer edge. According to the invention, it can be provided that the base body covers the entire longitudinal extent of the handle outer edge. In the assembled state of the handle assembly, the centering elements are arranged on an outer side of the base body facing the inside of the recess. The centering elements are preferably formed separately from one another. More preferably, the centering elements are arranged spaced apart from one another on the base body. The centering elements are preferably integrated into the base body in such a way that one area of the centering elements is surrounded by base body material, while another area of the centering elements is exposed to the outside, thus protecting the base body from wear. This has the advantage of further improving the installation of the handle assembly on the vehicle door using simple means and in a cost-effective manner.

[0021] The centering elements particularly preferably comprise a harder material than the base body. The centering elements can comprise, for example, ASA, ABS, COC, PA, PS, PTFE or the like. The centering elements preferably have a smooth surface with a relatively low coefficient of friction. The centering elements preferably have a greater extension in the mounting direction of the handle assembly into the recess than transversely to the mounting direction. The centering elements preferably have a decreasing thickness towards the outside of the door handle, so that the centering process of the door handle in the recess is facilitated. According to the invention, the centering elements can extend beyond the outside of the door handle, for example in order to provide an engagement surface, in particular for pliers or the fingers of a worker, for pulling the alignment device off the door handle. This has the advantage that the installation of the handle assembly on the vehicle door is further improved using simple means and in a cost-effective manner.

[0022] According to the invention, it is preferred that the alignment device engages around the outer edge of the handle. Within the scope of the invention, "engaging" means that the alignment device encompasses at least one region of the outer edge of the handle, preferably several regions of the outer edge of the handle, and particularly preferably almost all regions of the outer edge of the handle or the entire outer edge of the handle from several sides, for example as in a tongue and groove arrangement. By engaging around the outer edge of the handle, the risk of the alignment device inadvertently slipping off the door handle during the alignment process is reduced. The engagement is preferably designed in such a way that an intentional removal of the alignment device from the door handle, for example non-destructively or by destroying the alignment device, is still ensured. This has the advantage that the installation of the handle assembly on the vehicle door is further improved using simple means and in a cost-effective manner.

[0023] According to a second aspect of the invention, the object is achieved by a method for mounting a door handle on a vehicle door for a motor vehicle. The method comprises: Providing a handle assembly according to the invention, providing a vehicle door with a recess for the door handle of the handle assembly, moving the handle assembly from an inside of the vehicle door to the recess such that the outer edge of the door handle protrudes into the recess, aligning the door handle to the recess via the alignment device, attaching the door handle mechanism to the vehicle door, and removing the alignment device from the door handle via the outside of the vehicle door.

[0024] The handle assembly is provided such that the door handle is held on the door handle mechanism, and the alignment device is arranged on the outer edge of the door handle. The vehicle door can, for example, be provided in a state held on a body of the motor vehicle. The vehicle door has a door panel in which the recess for the door handle is formed. The recess is continuous and thus open toward the outside and inside of the vehicle door.

[0025] The handle assembly is moved from the inside of the vehicle door toward the recess in such a way that the outer edge of the door handle protrudes into the recess. The alignment device thus also protrudes into the recess. As the door handle mechanism is moved further toward the vehicle door, the alignment device engages with the inside of the recess. The resulting transverse force aligns the door handle with the recess. When the door handle mechanism contacts the inside of the vehicle door in an end position, the alignment process is complete and the door handle is aligned with the recess. A predefined gap is now formed between the outer edge of the door handle and the inside of the recess, which gap is filled by the alignment device.

[0026] In this aligned state, the door handle mechanism is attached to the vehicle door. Preferably, a housing of the door handle mechanism is attached to the inside of the vehicle door, for example, using screws, bolts, rivets, or the like. This prevents relative movement of the door handle mechanism to the vehicle door. Finally, the alignment device is removed from the door handle via the outside of the vehicle door, for example, by pulling on the alignment device, tearing the alignment device, or the like.

[0027] The method according to the invention for mounting a door handle on a vehicle door for a motor vehicle results in all the advantages that have already been described for a handle assembly for a motor vehicle according to the first aspect of the invention. Accordingly, the method according to the invention has the advantage over conventional methods that easy alignment of the door handle with respect to the recess is ensured using simple means and in a cost-effective manner, so that a circumferential gap between the door handle and the inside of the recess is set reliably and easily reproducibly with predefined gap dimensions. The method according to the invention is thus particularly suitable for mass production. By removing the alignment device when the handle assembly is mounted, any interference with the door handle by the alignment device during use of the motor vehicle is also ruled out.

[0028] A handle assembly according to the invention and a method according to the invention are explained in more detail below with reference to the drawings. They show schematically: Figure 1 shows a front view of a handle assembly according to a preferred first embodiment of the invention, Figure 2 shows a plan view of the handle assembly from Figure 1 , Figure 3 in a sectional view a section of the handle assembly from Figure 2 , Figure 4 shows a sectional view of a section of a handle assembly according to a preferred second embodiment of the invention, and Figure 5 shows a flow chart of a preferred embodiment of a method according to the invention.

[0029] Elements with the same function and mode of action are listed in the Figures 1 to 5 each provided with the same reference numerals.

[0030] In Fig. 1a handle assembly 1 according to a preferred first embodiment of the invention is shown schematically in a frontal view from a vehicle door outside A. Fig. 2 shows the handle assembly 1 from Fig. 1 schematically in a top view. The handle assembly 1 has a door handle mechanism 2 and a door handle 3 held on the door handle mechanism 2. A base body 14 of an alignment device 8 of the handle assembly 1 is arranged on an outer handle edge 7 of the door handle 3 such that the base body 14 surrounds the outer handle edge 7 from several sides. The base body 14 comprises an elastic material, so that the base body 14 is held on the door handle 3 under prestress and can be removed from the door handle 3 by stretching.

[0031] The alignment device 8 has a cross member 9, via which a first region 10 of the base body 14 is connected to a second region 11 of the base body 14. The first region 10 and the second region 11 are arranged on opposite longitudinal sides of the base body 14. The cross member 9 is preferably made of the same material as the base body 14. More preferably, the cross member 9 is formed monolithically with the base body 14. According to the invention, further cross members 9 can also be provided. At a longitudinal end 12 of the door handle 3, the alignment device 8 has a cap 13, which covers the longitudinal end 12 of the door handle 3 towards the outside A of the vehicle door and surrounds it from several sides. The cap 13 is attached to the longitudinal end 12, for example, by being pushed on from the side. The cap 13 is preferably made of the same material as the base body 14.It is preferred according to the invention that the cap 13 is formed monolithically with the base body 14.

[0032] The door handle 3 is arranged in a recess 4 of a vehicle door 5 and is aligned with the recess 4 via the alignment device 8 such that a circumferential gap with predefined dimensions is formed between the outer edge 7 of the handle and an inner side 6 of the recess 4. In this aligned state, the gap is completely filled by the base body 14 of the alignment device 8. The base body 14 is also slightly compressed by the inner side 6 of the recess and the door handle 3. The handle assembly 1 is thus aligned so that the door handle mechanism 2 can be fastened to the vehicle door 5 on the inner side I of the vehicle door.

[0033] In Fig. 3 is a section of the handle assembly 1 from Fig. 2schematically depicted in a sectional view. This view clearly shows that the base body 14 of the alignment device 8 engages around the outer edges 7 of the door handle 3, ensuring a secure hold of the alignment device 8 on the door handle 3. Toward the outer side A of the vehicle door, the alignment device 8 has curves, facilitating the positioning of the handle assembly 1 in the recess 4.

[0034] Fig. 4shows a section of a handle assembly 1 according to a preferred second embodiment of the invention, schematically in a sectional view. The handle assembly 1 according to the second embodiment of the invention differs from the handle assembly 1 according to the first embodiment of the invention in the design of the alignment device 8. A plurality of centering elements 15 made of a harder material than the base body 14 are arranged on the outer sides of the base body 14 of the alignment device 8. The centering elements 15 can, for example, be partially cast around the base body 14, so that the centering elements 15 are firmly held on the base body 14. The centering elements 15 have a wedge-shaped cross-section, with a wedge tip pointing towards the outside A of the vehicle door. The centering elements 15 improve the easy arrangement of the handle assembly 1 on the recess 4 and the easy alignment of the door handle 3 with respect to the recess 4.

[0035] Fig. 5 shows a preferred embodiment of a method according to the invention schematically in a flowchart. In a first method action 100, a handle assembly 1 according to the invention is provided. The handle assembly 1 has a door handle mechanism 2, on which a door handle 3 of the handle assembly 1 is held. A base body 14 of an alignment device 8 is held on a circumferential outer edge 7 of the door handle 3.

[0036] In a second method action 200, a vehicle door 5 for a motor vehicle is provided. A recess 4 for the door handle 3 is formed in a wall of the vehicle door 5. The recess 4 extends from the vehicle door interior I to the vehicle door exterior A and is continuous.

[0037] In a third method action 300, the handle assembly 1 is moved from the vehicle door inner side I of the vehicle door 5 toward the recess 4 such that the outer edge 7 of the door handle 3 protrudes into the recess 4. In this process, the alignment device 8 can contact a recess inner side 6 of the recess 4 at one or more locations. Thus, the handle assembly 1 is ready for aligning the door handle 3 with the recess 4.

[0038] In a fourth method action 400, the door handle 3 is aligned with the recess 4 via the alignment device 8. This is achieved by further moving the door handle mechanism 2 towards the vehicle door 5 until the door handle mechanism 2 or a housing of the door handle mechanism 2 contacts the vehicle door 5 from the vehicle door interior I, such that further movement of the door handle mechanism 2 towards the vehicle door 5 is positively prevented. The further movement causes a transverse force between the recess interior 6 and the alignment device 8, via which the door handle 3 is aligned with the recess 4. In the fully aligned state, the outer side of the door handle 3 preferably ends flush with an outer surface of the vehicle door 5 on the vehicle door exterior A.

[0039] In a fifth method action 500, the door handle mechanism 2 or a housing of the door handle mechanism 2 is fastened to the vehicle door 5 on the vehicle door interior I. Thus, a relative position of the door handle mechanism 2 to the vehicle door 5 is fixed in the aligned state, in which a predefined gap is formed between the handle outer edge 7 and the recess interior 6. In a sixth method action 600, the alignment device 8 is removed from the door handle 3, for example, by pulling it off, away from the vehicle door interior I via the vehicle door exterior A.
