Abstract
Description
[0001] The present patent application for industrial invention relates to an improved washbasin.
[0002] It should be noted that in the present description the term "washbasin" refers to bathroom sinks, bidets, kitchen sinks, washtubs and any other structure having a basin associated with a water device usually consisting of a faucet from which the water supplied from a water source flows.
[0003] A conventional washbasin comprises a basin with a bottom provided with a drain hole for the discharge of waste water. A drain pipe is connected to the drain hole in order to discharge the waste water into the sewer system.
[0004] The drain hole may be provided with a conventional drain or a mesh suitable for preventing hair and other similar solid materials from passing through the drain hole and clogging the drain pipe.
[0005] However, being located in central position in the bottom of the washbasin, the drain hole is always visible to the user.
[0006] As it is well known, hair, solid materials, dirt and sputum tend to concentrate and adhere around the drain hole, catching the eye of the user and consequently creating discomfort for the person using the washbasin.
[0007] The problem is accentuated in public bathrooms, such as those in restaurants, airports, stations and shopping centers, where the same washbasin is used by a multitude of individuals and therefore a multitude of liquids, hair and dirt may be concentrated in the drain hole, making the washbasin extremely unpleasant to look at.
[0008] To solve this problem, solutions have been devised in which the drain hole is made in a portion of the washbasin that is not visible to the user, such as in a narrow cavity of the washbasin. It should be noted that the drain hole is not only hidden because of the dirt, but also for aesthetic reasons, so that the washbasin has a clean and aesthetically pleasing design.
[0009] However, such a solution is not satisfactory because the access to the drain hole for cleaning reasons is extremely difficult and complicated.
[0010] Furthermore, it should be noted that the user who wants to clean the drain hole or the entire washbasin must be equipped with all the necessary cleaning materials, such as gloves, sponges and sanitizing products. Often such cleaning materials are stored in cabinets or on shelves that are far away from the washbasin, and therefore the user must go to the cabinet, take the materials and then return to the washbasin to be cleaned.
[0011] Such a solution is not only inconvenient, but also time consuming.
[0012] This problem also occurs when the user wants to use personal hygiene products or similar accessories, such as soap bars, toothbrushes, toothpaste or razors stored in cabinets or shelves that are positioned far away from the washbasin.
[0013] The purpose of the present invention is to devise a washbasin in which the dirt that is collected on the drain hole is not visible, and that at the same time allows the user to easily access the drain hole in order to clean and sanitize it.
[0014] In addition to the aforementioned purpose, a further purpose of the present invention is to devise a washbasin that uses the space in the washbasin to store items and objects for cleaning the washbasin or personal hygiene products in an orderly and practical manner without having to store them in special cabinets or shelves that are positioned far away from the washbasin.
[0015] These purposes are achieved according to the invention with the characteristics listed in the attached independent claim 1.
[0016] Advantageous embodiments appear from the dependent claims.
[0017] The washbasin according to the invention is defined by claim 1.
[0018] For greater explanatory clarity, the description of the washbasin according to the invention continues with reference to the attached drawings, which are for illustrative and not limitative purposes only, wherein: Fig. 1 is an axonometric view of the washbasin according to the invention having a closing element connected to the basin of the washbasin and disposed in a first position; Fig. 2 is the same as Fig. 1, except for the fact that the closing element is connected to the basin of the washbasin and is disposed in a second position; Fig. 3 is the same as Figs. 1 and 2, except for the fact that the closing element is removed from the basin; Fig. 1A is a sectional view of the basin of Fig. 1 sectioned along the vertical plane I-I of Fig. 1; Fig. 1B is an enlarged view of a detail of Fig. 1A; Fig. 2A is a sectional view of the basin of Fig. 2 sectioned along the vertical plane II-II of Fig. 2; Fig. 2B is an enlarged view of a detail of Fig. 2A; Fig. 4 is a front top view of the washbasin according to the invention in which the closing element is extracted from the basin of the washbasin; Fig. 5 is a detailed view of a cavity of the basin of the washbasin in which the drain hole is made; Fig. 6 is the same as Fig. 5, except for the fact that the elements disposed in the cavity are disconnected from the basin; Fig. 7 is an axonometric view of the closing element of the washbasin according to the invention; Fig. 7A is a detailed view of a slot formed on a side edge of the closing element; Fig. 8 is an axonometric view of the washbasin in Fig. 6 seen from a different angle; Figs. 9 and 10 are two axonometric views of a washbasin according to the invention according to an embodiment of the invention in which the washbasin is also equipped with a removable drawer; Fig. 10A is a sectional view of the washbasin of Fig. 10 sectioned along the plane X-X of Fig. 10; Figs. 11-11E are diagrammatic side views of a method used to detach and extract the closing element from the basin of the washbasin.
[0019] With reference to the attached figures, a washbasin according to the invention is described, which is comprehensively indicated with reference numeral "100".
[0020] It should be noted that the term "washbasin" (100) indistinctively refers to a bathroom sink, a kitchen sink, a bidet and similar elements comprising a basin to which a water device is connected, usually consisting of a faucet from which the water supplied from a water source flows.
[0021] For now, with reference to Figs. 1-8, a washbasin (100) of a bathroom is suitable for being fixed in projecting position on a bathroom wall or fixed on top of a cabinet.
[0022] With reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the washbasin (100) comprises a basin (1) that has a substantially rectangular shape and comprises four walls (111, 112, 113, 114) at right angles and a bottom (12). All the walls (111, 112, 113, 114) are substantially disposed in vertical position.
[0023] The walls (111, 112, 113, 114) comprise a rear wall (111), a front wall (112) and two side walls (113, 114). In the attached figures, the walls (111, 112, 113, 114) and the bottom (12) may be made of sheet metal. However, the walls (111, 112, 113, 114) and the bottom (12) may be also made in a single piece using known molding or thermoforming techniques.
[0024] The bottom (12) has a drain area (120) and the bottom (12) is slanted and configured to convey the water towards the drain area (120). Otherwise said, the drain area (120) is a portion of the bottom (12) that is lower than the rest of the bottom (12) so that the waste water that is poured into the basin (1) flows spontaneously towards the drain area (120).
[0025] In the embodiment of the invention, the bottom (12) is inclined and sloping towards the rear wall (111). In this regard, the drain area (120) of the bottom (12) is arranged close to the rear wall (111) of the basin (1) and extends across the entire width of the basin (1), that is to say across the entire distance between the two side walls (113, 114) of the basin.
[0026] The washbasin (100) comprises a drain hole (F) that is made in the drain area (120) of the bottom (12) of the basin (1) and is suitable for being connected to a sewage system for draining the water contained in the basin (1). A conventional drain that is known to a technician in the field can be applied to the drain hole (F) and therefore is not shown in the appended figures.
[0027] The wash basin (100) also comprises an upper wall (2) that protrudes from one of the walls (111, 112, 113, 114) of the basin (1) and surmounts the drain area (120).
[0028] In particular, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 1A, and 2A, the upper wall (2) protrudes from the rear wall (111) and extends for the entire distance between the two side walls (113, 114).
[0029] As shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 1A, and 2A the upper wall (2) consists of a panel that is fixed to the rear wall (111) and has its ends fixed to the two opposite side walls (113, 114).
[0030] Alternatively, the upper wall (2) can be an integral part of a counter (P) provided with an opening for the washbasin (100). By way of example, Figs. 9, 10 and 11 show a piece of furniture comprising a base (J), a counter (P) supported by the base (J) and having a rectangular opening through which the washbasin (100) is visible. In such a case the counter (P) has a portion that surmounts the drain area (120) of the bottom (12) of the basin (1) and such a portion coincides with the upper wall (2).
[0031] With reference to Figs. 1A, 1B, 2A and 2B, the upper wall (2) comprises an ending edge (21), an upper face (22) and a lower face (23) facing the drain area (120) of the bottom (12) of the basin (1).
[0032] A notch (24), which is commonly defined as "drip edge", which acts as drip catcher, is provided in the lower face (23) of the upper wall (2), close to the ending edge (21).
[0033] The upper wall (2), the rear wall (111), and the drain area (120) of the bottom (12) define a cavity (V) that is closed at the ends by the side walls (113, 114) and is open at the front, that is to say is provided with an access opening (Vx) facing the front wall (112) of the basin (1).
[0034] With reference to Figs. 1, 2, 3, 1A, 1B, 2A and 2B, the washbasin (100) comprises a closing element (3) that is connected to the washbasin (100) and frontally closes the cavity (V).
[0035] An opening (U) (shown in Fig. 1B) is provided between the closing element (3) and the bottom (12) to let the water to pass through to the drain area (120).
[0036] More precisely, the closing element (3) is spaced from the bottom (12) and therefore the opening (U) consists of a slot that extends under the closing element (3).
[0037] In view of the above, any hair, dirt, waste water or sputum that fall into the basin (1) flow towards the cavity (V) passing through the slot, and even if they were to be deposited around the drain hole (F), such hair, dirt and fluids would not be visible to a user of the washbasin (100) because the cavity (V) is covered by the closing element (3).
[0038] In the attached figures, the washbasin (100) is of "faucet type" and therefore there is a hole (20) on the upper wall (2) for the installation of a faucet or a faucet unit.
[0039] With reference to Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 8, a hydraulic assembly (T, Q) is housed in the cavity (V) and comprises a pipe (T) that protrudes from the drain area (120) of the bottom (12) and into which the hoses of the faucet or of the faucet unit are inserted. The hydraulic assembly (T, Q) comprises a protective casing (Q) that covers the pipe (T). Evidently, the protective casing (Q) may be omitted and in such a case the hydraulic assembly (T, Q) would only comprise the pipe (T).
[0040] The washbasin (100) also comprises supporting means (4) arranged between the closing element (3) and the basin (1) to support said closing element (3).
[0041] The supporting means (4) are configured in such a way that the closing element (3) may be disposed in: a closed position, wherein it closes the cavity (V) so that the cavity (V) is not accessible from the outside; an open position, wherein it opens the cavity (V) so that the cavity (V) is accessible to a user who wants to clean the cavity (V) or work on the pipe (T) arranged in the cavity (V).
[0042] In the particular embodiment of the invention, the supporting means (4) are shaped and configured in such a way that the closing element (3): may be removed from the basin (1) in order to be arranged in the opening position (shown in Fig. 3), and may be coupled to the basin (1) in order to be arranged in the closing position (shown in Figs. 1 and 2).
[0043] Furthermore, the supporting means (4) support the closing element (3) in a movable manner, in such a way as to allow the closing element (3) to move between a first position (shown in Figs. 1, 1A and 1B) and a second position (shown in Figs. 2, 2A and 2B) when the closing element (3) is coupled to the basin (1) in the closed position. In both positions, however, the closing element (3) prevents the user from accessing the inside of the cavity (V).
[0044] With reference to Fig. 7, the closing element (3) has a boxed shape and comprises a compartment (30) for storing products for cleaning the washbasin (100), such as sponges, soap bars, gloves, containers with cleaning liquids and personal hygiene products, such as toothpaste, soap bars, razors, toothbrushes, etc.
[0045] In particular, the closing element (3) comprises: a rectangular front piece (31) having a rear face (311) facing the cavity (V), a front face (312) opposite the rear face (311), a lower border (313) facing the bottom (12), an upper border (314) and two side borders (315) facing the two side walls (113, 114) of the basin (1); two side edges (32) that protrude from the rear face (311) of the front piece (31) in correspondence with the two side borders (315) of the front piece (31); a supporting surface (33) that protrudes from the rear face (311) of the front piece (31) at the lower border (313) of the front piece (31) and extends between the two side edges (32); and a rear containment rail (34) that protrudes from the supporting surface (33) in parallel direction to the front piece (31).
[0046] The front piece (31), the side edges (32), the supporting surface (33) and the rear containment rail (34) define the compartment (30) of the closing element (3).
[0047] The supporting surface (33) comprises a notch (5) shaped in such a way to be transversely crossed by the hydraulic assembly (T, Q). More precisely, the notch (5) has a shape that corresponds to the casing (Q) if the hydraulic unit is provided with the casing (Q) that covers the pipe (T), or to the pipe (T) if the hydraulic unit only comprises the pipe (T) without the casing (Q).
[0048] Obviously, the rear containment rail (34) will be interrupted at the notch (5) and therefore the rear containment rail (34) is composed of two semi-rails (34a, 34b) coplanar with each other.
[0049] On the upper border (314) of the front piece (31) there is a groove (S) in which a gasket is inserted (not shown in the attached figures).
[0050] As mentioned above, the closing element (3) is mounted movably with respect to the basin (1) in such a way that: when the closing element (3) is disposed in the first position (see Fig. 1), the compartment (30) is completely inside the cavity (V) and therefore the compartment (30) is not accessible from the outside; when the closing element (3) is disposed in the second position (see Fig. 2), the compartment (30) protrudes from the cavity (V) and therefore the compartment (30) is accessible from the outside.
[0051] In both positions of the closing element (3) it is impossible for the user to access the cavity (V).
[0052] So, to summarize, the closing element (3) can be disposed in: the open arrangement (shown in Fig. 3), in which the closing element (3) is extracted from the basin (1) and therefore the cavity (V) is accessible; the closing arrangement, with positioning in the first position (shown in Fig. 1), in which the closing element (3) is coupled to the basin (1) and is arranged in such a way that both the cavity (V) and the compartment (30) of the closing element (3) are inaccessible; and the closing arrangement, with positioning in the second position (shown in Fig. 2), in which the closing element (3) is coupled to the basin (1) and is arranged in such a way that the compartment (30) of the closing element (3) is accessible but the cavity (V) is inaccessible.
[0053] The supporting means (4) are configured to let the closing element (3) rotate with respect to the basin (1) about a horizontal axis of rotation (Z) between the first position and the second position.
[0054] More precisely, the supporting means (4) let the closing element (3) to be tilted backwards to dispose the compartment (30) inside the cavity (V), and forwards to make the compartment (30) accessible.
[0055] The horizontal axis of rotation (Z) is perpendicular to the two side walls (113, 114) and parallel to the rear wall (111) and the front wall (112).
[0056] The horizontal axis of rotation (Z) is positioned in relation to the closing element (3) in such a way that the front piece (31) and the supporting surface (33) protrude from the axis of rotation (Z) along two radial directions that define an angle (α) in relation to a geometric plane orthogonal to the axis of rotation (Z).
[0057] The angle (α) defined by the front piece (31) and by the supporting surface (33) is preferably comprised between 88° and 95° (inclusive).
[0058] The supporting means (4) comprise pins (41) and seats (42) obtained in the closing element (3) and in the side walls (113, 114) of the basin (1) to hinge the closing element (3) around the horizontal axis of rotation (Z).
[0059] In particular, the supporting means (4) comprise: two pins (41) that are coaxial and aligned with the axis of rotation (Z) and protrude from the side walls (113, 114) of the basin (1); two seats (42) obtained on the side edges (32) of the closing element (3) to accommodate the pins (41); where each seat (42) comprises an access opening (421) that ends onto a lower border (321) of the side edge (32) and an end border (420) that extends along an arc of circumference and rests and engages in rotation with one of the two pins (41).
[0060] Each seat (42) has a first section (42a) at the end border (420) having a width equal to the diameter of the pin (41), and a second section (42b) that ends at the access opening (421) and has a width greater than the diameter of the pin (41) in such a way that the pin (41) can be disposed in different transversal positions with respect to the seat (42).
[0061] Therefore, to couple the closing element (3) to the basin (1) it is necessary to insert the two seats (42) externally to the two pins (41) until the end borders (420) of the seats (42) rest on the pins (41). Once the end borders (420) rest on the pins (41), the closing element (3) is supported at the ends by the pins (41) and can rotate around the axis of rotation (Z).
[0062] The closing element (3) can rotate about the axis of rotation (Z) between the first position and the second position by an angle comprised between 45° and 65°.
[0063] With reference to Figs. 1A and 1B, when the closing element (3) is in the first position, the front piece (31) is substantially vertical and covers the opening (Vx) of the cavity (V), whereas the supporting surface (33) is positioned in the cavity (V) and is substantially parallel to the bottom (12) of the basin (1). As it can be seen in Fig. 1B, the front piece (31) is positioned behind the notch (24).
[0064] With reference to Figs. 2A and 2B, on the other hand, when the closing element (3) is in the second position, the front piece (31) and the supporting surface (33) substantially define a V-shaped structure when seen laterally. In such a case the access to the cavity (V) is prevented by the presence of the supporting surface (33) that partially closes the cavity (V).
[0065] The closing element (3) is stopped in the first position due to the interference of the upper border (314) of the front piece (31) with the lower face (23) of the upper wall (2). More precisely, when the closing element (3) rotates towards the first position, the upper border (314) slightly interferes with the lower face (23), stopping the closing element (3) with the front piece (31) in vertical position.
[0066] Instead, the closing element (3) is stopped in the second position due to the interference of the closing element (3) with end-stop means (6) positioned in the cavity (V).
[0067] With reference to Figs. 5 and 6, the end-stop means (6) comprises a stop roller made of rubber, against which the closing element (3) is stopped when the closing element (3) is moved from the first position to the second position.
[0068] The stop roller protrudes from the casing (Q) and is fixed to the casing (Q) by means of a fixing screw.
[0069] The supporting surface (33) is suitable for abutting against said end-stop means (6) consisting of the stop roller.
[0070] The closing element (3) also includes a passage (55) suitable for crossing the stop roller when a user wants to extract the closing element (3) from the basin (1) to bring the closing element (3) into the opening position.
[0071] The passage (55) is obtained on the supporting surface (33) in a position adjacent to the notch (5) and in correspondence with the rear containment rail (34).
[0072] By way of example, Figs. 11-11E diagrammatically show how to extract the closing element (3) from the basin (1) to bring the closing element (3) into the open position.
[0073] With reference to Fig. 11, starting from a situation in which the closing element (3) is in the closing arrangement and is disposed in the first position, it is necessary to tilt the closing element forward to dispose it in the second position, as shown in Fig. 11A.
[0074] With reference to Figs. 11-11E, the closing element (3) is then moved by rotating it in one direction (N1) and making it translate in several directions (N2, N3) so that the passage (55) crosses the end-stop means (6) and the closing element (3) can be freely extracted from the basin (1).
[0075] It should be pointed out that the second section (42b) of the seat (42), which ends at the access opening (421) and has a width greater than the diameter of the pin (41), allows to move the closing element (3) in different directions so that the latter can pass over the end-stop means (6) and be extracted from the basin (1).
[0076] With reference to Figs. 5 and 6, the washbasin (100) advantageously comprises a push-and-pull device (7) disposed in the cavity (V) and configured in such a way that, when the closing element (3) is pushed towards the cavity (V) and interferes with the push-and-pull device (7), the latter is activated and exerts a thrust on the closing element (3) such that it moves it towards the second position.
[0077] The push-and-pull device (7) is a conventional device available on the market and known to a technician in the field and therefore its detailed description will be omitted for the sake of brevity.
[0078] The push-and-pull device (7) is fixed to the casing (Q) by means of fixing screws.
[0079] With reference to Figs. 9, 10 and 10A, the washbasin (100) may comprise a hollow peripheral portion (8) that surrounds the basin (1) at least partially. In particular, in the embodiment shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 10A, the hollow peripheral portion (8) is arranged alongside one of the two side walls (114).
[0080] The hollow peripheral portion (8) has a compartment (81) with an opening formed in the side wall (114).
[0081] The washbasin (100) comprises a drawer (9) that defines a storage compartment (90). The drawer (9) can move inside the compartment (81) of the hollow peripheral portion (8) between an extracted position, wherein the compartment (90) of the drawer (9) is accessible, and a retracted position, wherein the compartment (90) of the drawer (9) is not accessible.
[0082] The drawer (9) has a front panel (91) that, when the drawer (9) is in the retracted position, covers the opening that provides access to the compartment (81) of the hollow peripheral portion (8) and is flush with the side wall (114).
[0083] The drawer (9) is mounted so that it can move inside the compartment (81) in a sliding manner by means of sliding connections interposed between the drawer (9) and opposite walls that define the compartment (81) of the hollow peripheral portion (8).
[0084] Preferably, the washbasin (100) also comprises an additional push-and-pull device, which is not shown in the attached figures, located in the compartment (81) of the hollow peripheral portion (8) and associated with the drawer (9).
[0085] Following the above description, the advantages of the present invention are now evident.
[0086] Firstly, thanks to the provision of the closing element (3) that is coupled to the basin (1) by means of the supporting means (4), it is possible to hide the drain hole (F) so that the washbasin (100) is always aesthetically pleasing to look at and the cavity (V) where the drain hole (F) is located can be accessed easily for cleaning or sanitizing reasons.
[0087] Furthermore, the fact that the closing element (3) has a boxed structure allows the closing element (3) to operate as a concealing element and as a container for elements and objects useful for cleaning the washbasin (100).
[0088] However, it should be noted that even if in the attached figures the closing element (3) has always been shown as a boxed structure, in an alternative embodiment of the invention the closing element (3) may not have a boxed structure and may comprise only the front piece (31).
[0089] In fact, if the closing element (3) only comprised the front piece (31), then the movement of the closing element (3) between the first position and the second position could be useful to completely hide the cavity (V) (first end-of-travel position) and to make the cavity (V) at least partially visible (second end-of-travel position).
[0090] In fact, if the user only wants to check and view the cavity (V) without physically accessing it, the closing element (3) could be kept in the closed arrangement and could be simply disposed in the second position without having to completely extract the closing element (3) from the basin (1) to bring it into the open position. In fact, if the closing element (3) only had the front piece (31), it would be configured as a small lid suitable for being moved by the user to completely or partially cover the cavity (V).
[0091] Furthermore, it should be noted that even if the attached figures always show a washbasin (100) with a faucet on the upper wall (2), the same advantages would be obtained also for washbasins (100) without faucet, i.e. those washbasins in which the faucet is not connected to the washbasin but to a structure separate from the washbasin, such as a wall or a cabinet on which the washbasin rests.
[0092] Finally, it should be pointed out that, even if the attached figures always show a washbasin (100) with four walls (111, 112, 113, 114) at right angles that define a rectangular shape of the washbasin (100), the washbasin (100) may also comprise a single side wall that extends along a substantially elliptical trajectory. In such a case, evidently, the upper wall (2) will be shaped like a sector of an ellipse.
[0093] Numerous variations and modifications of detail can be made to the present embodiment of the invention, which are known to a technician of the field, while still falling within the scope of the invention as expressed by the attached claims.
