AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Fire-resistant floor drains with water seals face challenges in maintaining effective fire sectorization and aeraulic containment due to water evaporation, leading to potential fire spread and temperature increases, especially when the water level falls below a critical threshold, and existing solutions like intumescent materials have limitations such as detachment, degradation, and reduced effectiveness over time.

Method used

A fire-resistant floor drain design featuring a bowl-shaped body with a perforated plate and a tubular bell equipped with a pair of springs, where a shape memory spring with varying stiffness blocks the conduit opening as temperature increases, preventing smoke and heat transfer without the need for intumescent materials, and returns to its initial position after cooling, ensuring continuous operation.

Benefits of technology

Effectively prevents smoke and heat propagation between rooms during a fire, maintaining fire sectorization and aeraulic containment even without a sufficient water seal, ensuring compliance with temperature standards and extending the time between water top-ups, while being simple in structure and operation.

Abstract

The invention relates to a drain (1), which comprises a body (10) with a bottom wall (100) through which a conduit (12) extends, the body (10) having an opening (O) closed off by a perforated plate (11), a hood (111) being provided in the body (10), characterised in that the hood (111) is provided with at least one pair of springs, namely a first shape-memory spring (R1) and a second shape-memory spring (R2) having a stiffness greater than that of the first spring (R1) at room temperature and which decreases when the temperature rises, one end of the second spring (R2) bearing a seal (4), the springs (R1, R2) being shaped so that, at room temperature, the seal (4) extends away from the conduit (12), while, following a rise in temperature, the seal (4) provides sealing to the conduit (12).
