Abstract
Description
[0001] TITLE: Electrical cable extension system, electrical cable extension kit and mounting method
[0002] Technical field
[0003] The present invention relates to an electrical cable extension system. The present invention also relates to an electrical cable extension kit and a mounting method.
[0004] State of the prior art
[0005] Nowadays, traditional cables are thick and require significant work for the general public when they want to hide them, for example for the installation of a television or a light fixture. A known technical solution to this problem is cable ducts or conduits that allow the cables to be hidden.
[0006] Other possibilities exist but involve either expensive work, the need for a professional or give an unsightly result.
[0007] In addition, existing connection systems generally include two circular cables and connectors to connect two circular cables. However, on the one hand, the circular cable is difficult to carry in a narrow space and it must be specially slotted for wiring. On the other hand, the circular cable is difficult to fix during wiring, and is difficult to cover with wallpaper or paint. Therefore, the existing connection system is limited in practical applications. It is difficult to adapt to a complicated wiring environment.
[0008] The aim of the present invention is to remedy at least one of the drawbacks mentioned above.
[0009] Statement of the invention
[0010] This objective is achieved with an electrical cable extension system comprising at least one connection box, said connection box being formed by a lower part coupled to an upper part, the connection box comprising a connector for electrically connecting a flat cable with a circular cable, said circular cable being composed of two conductive wires, each conductive wire being fixed to the connector of said box, the connection box also comprising, at a first end, an insertion slot at its lower part intended for the passage of the flat cable and two openings at a second end opposite the first, the two openings being intended to receive the two conductive wires of the circular cable, the flat cable being connected to the connector once the latter is inserted into said insertion slot.
[0011] The flat cable in this system is a flat electrical cable that sticks to any surface and can be hidden under paint, wallpaper, or tiles without any work.
[0012] The flat cable is tested in France, does not catch fire and meets all safety standards. The flat cable allows you to use up to 16 amps and 3000 watts with approximately 1.5 mm2 of copper (in cross-section), at 230 volts.
[0013] A connector is a domino-type element.
[0014] The extension system allows the flat cable to be positioned in the area where the user does not want to have exposed cables.
[0015] The flat cable can be cut by the user to the desired length, allowing the system to be adapted to any usage conditions, for example connecting a light or a television.
[0016] This system therefore allows for a discreet and aesthetic installation, while limiting the cost for the user.
[0017] The connector may comprise two mounting parts and an extension part connecting the two mounting parts, each of the conductive wires of the circular cable being received in one of the mounting parts, the second mounting part being provided with an insertion groove intended to receive said flat cable.
[0018] The connector allows a flat cable and a circular cable to be received in the same element and allows the connection between the two cables.
[0019] The extension portion may include an opening configured to receive a closure member. Each mounting portion may include at least one protruding member, each protruding member including an opening configured for securing the cable received in said mounting portion.
[0020] Each mounting portion may include at least one mounting element location configured to receive a mounting element fixedly in said mounting element location.
[0021] Each mounting element may comprise two receiving portions, the first corresponding to a circular cable receiving portion, the second corresponding to a flat cable receiving portion, the flat cable receiving portion comprising a receiving groove.
[0022] The system may also include at least one closure element. The closure element may be a screw, for example, or any other equivalent element. The closure element is used to secure the upper part, the connector, and the lower part of the housing together.
[0023] The connector may also include at least one fastener. The connector's fastener connects the flat cable to the circular cable. In use, the flat cable is inserted into the connector through the insertion slot, and then the fastener is tightened so that it pierces the copper of the cable. This is how the signal is transmitted through the connector to the circular cable. The fastener also secures the said cables in the connector.
[0024] The element can correspond to a screw for example or any other equivalent means.
[0025] The upper portion of the housing and the lower portion of the housing may comprise a means for closing said housing.
[0026] By closing means, we mean a protrusion for the lower part and an opening for the upper part, for example. These closing means allow a closing element such as a screw to pass through, for example, to close the entire system. The closing means mentioned above are not limiting. Other equivalent means may be used. The housing may be composed of a single part, the upper part being connected to the lower part by one of the sides of each part. This makes it easier to close the housing, and potentially prevents elements from being lost when assembling it.
[0027] The flat cable can be 1.97 cm wide and 0.25 mm thick. This width allows for easy insertion of the flat cable into the connector for the user while ensuring a good connection between the flat cable and the circular cable. Indeed, with this width as well as this thickness of flat cable, the fixing means cross the cable optimally and in the right place to ensure the connection.
[0028] Said system may comprise at least one second connection box, said second connection box being formed by a lower part coupled to an upper part, said second connection box comprising a connector for electrically connecting a flat cable with a circular cable, said circular cable being composed of two conductive wires, each conductive wire being fixed to the connector of said box, the second connection box also comprises, at a first end, an insertion slot at its lower part intended to insert the flat cable and two openings at a second end opposite the first, the two openings being intended to receive the two conductive wires of the circular cable, the flat cable being connected to the electrical connector once the latter is inserted into said insertion slot, each end of the flat cable being connected to a connection box.
[0029] This goal is also achieved with an electrical cable extension kit including the following elements:
[0030] - a flat cable with a defined length,
[0031] - a male adapter connected by a circular cable and connected to a first system according to the invention,
[0032] - a female adapter connected by a circular cable and connected to a second system according to the invention, - a circular wire comprising two stripped conductive wires at each of its ends,
[0033] - at least one closing element for each box of each system.
[0034] This kit can be adapted to all possible uses. The length of the flat cable can be adapted to the user's needs. The user cuts the flat cable to the desired length. The kit also provides a circular cable with a male plug, a circular cable with a female plug, and a circular cable with bare conductor wires at the ends.
[0035] Connectors allow current to be carried between flat cable and circular cable. Connectors are used in pairs: on one side there is the traditional male plug to recover the current and on the other a female plug to connect the products (electrical or electronic) or: a stripped cable that allows direct connection to the light fixture.
[0036] The user can then build their system according to the desired connection. These different options allow the user to adapt the system according to the invention according to their needs.
[0037] The said kit may also include the following elements:
[0038] - at least one means of fixing said flat cable,
[0039] - at least one means of fixing each box of each system,
[0040] - at least one accessory configured to fix at least one closing element of each housing.
[0041] Advantageously, the means for fixing said flat cable may correspond to strong glue or double-sided adhesive for example. This fixing means allows the flat cable to be positioned and fixed on the defined surface. Advantageously, the double-sided adhesive of the flat cable has the same dimensions as said flat cable. The means for fixing each box may correspond to a double-sided adhesive patch. This fixing means allows the user to fix or not the boxes of the system in order to secure the system (no risk of falling for example). Advantageously, the adhesive patch has the same dimensions as the boxes to be fixed.
[0042] The kit can also include a strip of adhesive wallpaper to cover the flat cable once it has been positioned and secured. The kit also makes it possible to offer a lower-cost electrical extension cord since the entire assembly is carried out by the user himself and without having to carry out major, expensive work.
[0043] This objective is also achieved with a method of mounting an electrical cable extension kit according to the invention, the method comprising the following steps:
[0044] - cutting the flat cable to the desired length,
[0045] - connecting a first end of the flat cable with a first connector, the flat cable being first inserted into the insertion slot of the housing of said system,
[0046] - closing the system via a closing element,
[0047] - connecting a second end of the flat cable with a second connector via a fixing element, the flat cable being first inserted into the insertion slot of the housing of said system,
[0048] - closing the system via a closing element.
[0049] The installation of the electrical extension kit is simple and intuitive for the user. This allows anyone to change the cable in order to have a more aesthetic and much less expensive result than the systems proposed by the prior art.

[0075] The electrical extension cable system of the present invention comprises a flat cable 3, a circular cable 2 and a connector 4 for electrically connecting the flat cable 3 and the circular cable 2. The circular cable 2 is a general circular cable in the prior art and will not be described. The flat cable 3 is depicted in Figure 6 and comprises two wires 31 and a jacket 32. The wire 31 is flat and is used to conduct signals. The outer jacket 32 is made of an insulating material that covers the two wires 31 and helps insulate them from each other. The outer jacket 32 also flattens the flat cable 3 as a whole. Preferably, the flat cable 3 uses copper and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) with the precise dimensions of 1.97 cm in width and 0.25 mm in thickness. Other dimensions may be used in other embodiments.
[0076] Referring to Figure 1, we can see a circular cable 2 connected to a mains socket called a male plug at a first end. At its second end, the circular cable 2 is divided into two conductive wires 21 and 22 which are connected to the connection box 1. In other embodiments, the circular cable can, at its first end, be connected to a so-called female socket. This first end can also correspond to the two bare cables 21 and 22. The connection box 1 is square in shape. In other embodiments, the housing 1 can have a circular, rectangular or other shape. The housing 1 is composed of an upper part 10 and a lower part 11 configured to be coupled. A connector 4 is placed inside the housing 1 when the two parts 10, 11 of the housing 1 are assembled.
[0077] With reference to figures 2a) to e), the upper part 10 comprises an opening 101 which corresponds to a circular opening, an inner face 103, an outer face 104 and four sides projecting from the inner face 103. The opening 101 comprises two parts, a first part wider than the second allowing a closing element such as a screw for example, to come to bear and a second elongated part allowing the passage of the closing element to close the housing. The upper part 10 comprises in its inner face 103, four engagement elements such as studs 102 projecting at the four corners of the square shape of said upper part 10. The four engagement elements 102 make it possible to correctly position the upper part of the housing 10 on the lower part 11 thereof. The opening 101 is off-center. Referring to Figure 2c) a profile section of the upper part 10 can be seen. The upper part 10 also comprises on one of its sides two semi-circular through notches 105 intended to receive the conductive wires 21 and 22 of the circular cable. The other three sides of the upper part 10 as shown for example in figure 2d) are solid.
[0078] With reference to figures 3a) to f), the connection box 1 comprises a lower part 11. The lower part 11 is square in shape, like the upper part 10. The upper part 10 and lower part 11 have the same shape regardless of the embodiment. The lower part 11 comprises an inner face 113, an outer face 114 and four sides projecting from the inner face 113. The sides of the lower part 11 have a height less than the height of the sides of the upper part 10. It comprises on its inner face 113 four engagement elements 112 positioned at the four corners, four positioning elements 116 as well as a protuberance 111 allowing the closing of the box 1. The engagement elements 112 are configured to cooperate with the engagement elements 102. In the embodiment shown, the engagement elements 112 correspond to engagement holes. Each engagement hole 112 cooperates with each protruding stud 102 to engage the upper portion 10 with the lower portion 11 to form a closed receiving space receiving the connector 4. The protrusion 111 is hollow and positioned so as to face the opening 101 of the upper portion 10. The lower portion 11 also comprises an insertion slot 115 positioned on the inner face 113 along one of the sides of the lower portion 10. The lower portion 11 comprises on the side opposite the position of the insertion slot 115, two semi-circular through notches 105 (see figure 3c), the two remaining sides being solid (see figure 3d). The positioning elements 116 make it possible to correctly position the connector 4 as in figure 3f) within the housing 1 and to hold it in position. The connector 4 is then held by said four positioning elements 116.
[0079] Referring to Figures 4a) to 4f), the connector 4 comprises an extension portion 41 and two mounting portions 42 on either side of the extension 41. The extension portion 41 is formed on a side surface of one mounting portion 42, and extends to another mounting portion 42, thereby connecting the two mounting portions 42 such that the two mounting portions 42 are arranged symmetrically on either side thereof. The extension 41 comprises an opening 43 for receiving a closure element. This opening 43 bears on the protrusion 111 of the lower portion 11 and receives the opening 101 above it when the two housing portions are assembled. Each mounting portion 42 comprises two protruding elements 45 on its upper surface, each protruding element 45 comprising an opening configured to receive a fastening element. Each opening 43 is through. Each mounting portion 42 is hollow, this hollow corresponding to a mounting element location 46. The mounting element location 46 comprises a locking element 49 intended to lock the mounting element 5 when the latter is positioned in the location 46. The locking element 49 corresponds to a downwardly projecting element. Each mounting portion 42 also comprises at one of its ends, an insertion groove 44 intended to receive one of the ends of the flat cable (see FIG. 4c). The connector 4 further comprises a mounting element 5 (see FIG. 4e) fixedly received in a mounting element location 46 of the electrical connector 4.
[0080] According to Figures 4f) and 5a) to d), the mounting element 5 is made of an insulating material and is composed of two receiving parts at each of its ends, the first corresponding to a circular cable receiving part 51, the second corresponding to a flat cable receiving part 52. The circular cable receiving part 51 comprises a recess having a substantially cylindrical shape configured to receive a conductive wire 21 or 22 of the circular cable. The flat cable receiving part 52 comprises a receiving groove 53. The receiving groove 53 is arranged in the lower part of the mounting element 5. The receiving groove 53 communicates with the insertion groove 44 of the connector 4. In Figure 4f), the mounting element 5 can be seen positioned in the connector 4 with two fixing elements. The fixing element is used to connect the flat cable 3 or the circular cable 2 with the connector 4.
[0081] The connector 5 is placed in the receiving space formed by the upper part 10 and the lower part 11 of the housing 1. The fixing element passes sequentially through the fixing opening 101 of the upper part 10, the opening 43 of the connector 4, and is fixed in the protrusion 111 of the lower part 11. The opening 43 fixes the connector in the housing space.
[0082] A mounting element 5 is fixed in each mounting element location 46. In the embodiment shown, two mounting elements 5 are fixed in the connector 4. The mounting elements 5 abut against each locking element 49. The two conductive wires 21 and 22 of the circular cable are respectively inserted into the receiving holes 51 of the two mounting elements 5. The two conductive wires 21 and 22 are fixed by a fixing element. The fixing element is inserted into each opening 48 and then tightened. The fixing element corresponds for example to a screw. Once this is positioned, the user screws it into the connector 4.
[0083] The flat cable 3 is then inserted firstly into the insertion slot 115 and then into the receiving groove 44 of the two mounting elements 5. The fixing element is passed through each remaining opening 48 in order to fix said flat cable 3.
[0084] The connector 4 is then installed on the inner face 113 of the lower part 11 of the housing via the positioning elements 116 and the opening 43 of the connector 4 is positioned on the protuberance 111 of the lower part 11 of the housing 1.
[0085] The notches 105 of the upper part 10 and the lower part 11 correspond to each other, so that these form circular openings when the two parts of the housing are assembled. The two conductive wires 20 and 21 pass through said openings.
[0086] In a second embodiment, said system also comprises a second housing as described above. This is fixed in the same manner as described above to the second end of the flat cable 3. The flat cable 3 is then connected at one end to a male socket and at a second end to a female socket, thus forming an extension.
[0087] In yet another embodiment, the housing 1 comprises a connector 4 for connecting two flat cables together. In this embodiment, the connector comprises two mounting elements, each mounting element comprising two flat cable receiving portions. Each portion of each mounting element then comprises a receiving groove.
[0088] Also described is an electrical extension cord kit comprising the following:
[0089] - a flat cable 3 having a defined length,
[0090] - a male adapter connected by a circular cable 2 and connected to a first system as previously described,
[0091] - a female adapter connected by a circular cable 2 and connected to a second system as previously described,
[0092] - a circular wire comprising two bare conductive wires at each of its ends,
[0093] - at least one closing element for each housing of each system. The kit may also include the following elements:
[0094] - at least one means of fixing said flat cable,
[0095] - at least one means of fixing each box of each system,
[0096] - at least one accessory configured to fix at least one closing element of each housing.
[0097] Also disclosed is a method of mounting an electrical cable extension kit system according to any one of claims 13 to 14, the method comprising the following steps:
[0098] - cutting the flat cable to the desired length,
[0099] - connecting a first end of the flat cable with a first connector, the flat cable being first inserted into the insertion slot of the housing of said system,
[0100] - closing the system via a closing element,
[0101] - connecting a second end of the flat cable with a second connector via a fixing element, the flat cable being first inserted into the insertion slot of the housing of said system,
[0102] - closing the system using a closing element. First, the user takes possession of the electrical cable extension kit. This measures the length of cable required for its application. For example, to connect a wall-mounted television, the user may need a two-meter-long flat cable. The user cuts the flat cable 3 to the desired length.
[0103] The kit comprises two systems, each comprising a connector 4 already connected to a circular cable 2. One system comprises a male plug, the other a female plug at the end of said circular cable. In other embodiments, the circular cable 2 of the system may not already be connected to the connector 4. In this specific case, the user will also have to connect the circular cable 2 in the same way as the flat cable 3.
[0104] Generally, the connector comprises four fixing elements already positioned in the projecting elements 45 via the fixing holes 48. In this case, the fixing elements correspond to screws.
[0105] As previously described, the housing comprises an upper part 10 and a lower part 11. The user separates the two parts if they are already pre-assembled and accesses the connector 4. The user takes the lower part 11, one end of the flat cable and passes it through the insertion slot 115 of said lower part 11. The user then unscrews the two fixing elements positioned on the part comprising the receiving groove 44 of the connector. The user slides the end of the flat cable into this receiving groove, then fixes it with said fixing elements. The fixing elements are then tightened using an accessory such as a screwdriver for example. The user then positions the connector on the lower part 11 of the housing 1 via the positioning elements 116 and closes the housing by positioning the upper part 10 on the lower part 11.The user completes the assembly of the first system by securing the entire housing 1 with a closing element. The closing element can be secured with the same accessory provided in the kit.
[0106] Once the first system is installed at the first end of the flat cable 3, the user does the same with the second system provided on the second end of the flat cable. The electrical extension device is then mounted. The user can also, depending on his needs, exchange a circular cable 2 connected to a male or female socket with a circular cable 2 comprising stripped conductive wires at each end. On the same principle as the installation of the flat cable 3 in the connector 4, the user loosens the fixing means on the side of the circular cable 2. The user removes the conductive wires from the connector 4, and positions the new ones in their place. The user can then reattach the new conductive wires via the fixing elements.
[0107] Of course, the invention is not limited to the examples which have just been described and numerous adjustments can be made to these examples without departing from the scope of the invention.
[0108] Of course, the various features, forms, variants and embodiments of the invention may be combined with each other in various combinations provided that they are not incompatible or mutually exclusive. In particular, all the variants and embodiments described above may be combined with each other.
