[0003] The present invention relates to the field of flame-resistant protective clothing, more in particular to a jacket for firefighters. The present invention further relates to the use of a middle layer in a jacket according to the invention and to a kit of parts.
[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0005] Firefighters and other specialized personnel, such as first responders and rescue teams, are assigned to carry out diverse high-risk tasks during their interventions, each of which necessitates a different attire, the requirements of which are typically set out in official standards. These requirements for such personal protective equipment (PPE) thereby depend on the nature of the task or duty. Standards for protective clothing for firefighters have been set and focus among other things on heat and flame resistance, resistance to water penetration and to water vapour, and / or resistance to penetration by liquid chemicals. Standards may further include rules relating to mechanical properties of the garment (tear, tensile strength), inspection access, anti-wicking properties of the garment and the like. As a result, firefighter and rescue teams end up with a wide range of protective clothing, each suitable for a different set of tasks, wherein each item represents a significant cost and can only be used for a limited amount of duties.
[0006] It is known in the prior art to combine layers, each of which has a different set of properties, in an assembly to form a protective garment.
[0007] US 2008 / 0209611 Al discloses a garment outer shell and liner system, comprising a garment outer shell, a first liner having first protective properties and a second liner having second protective properties. Each liner is adapted to fit within, and is removably securable to, the outer shell. The liners each have a protruding portion, which is arranged to protrude from the outer shell when that respective liner is secured within the outer shell. The protruding portion of each of both liners has a colour which is different from each other. A shell can carry one single liner, but can also carry two liners at a single time.
[0008] EP 2 984 955 Al relates to a protective suit having a first outer fabric layer of a flame-resistant material, a second basic layer having a moisture barrier, and a third layer being heat resistant, wherein the second basic layer and the third layer are connected. The first outer fabric layer is detachably connected with the second basic layer by means of a connection means. When the first, second and third layer are worn together, the protective suit fulfils the requirements of EN 469:2005 / Al:2006. It is an object of this invention to allow the wearer to separate easily the first outer fabric layer from the second basic layer, when the first outer fabric layer has been contaminated during firefighting, without having to take off the second basic layer. When the contaminated outer layer has been removed, a new outer layer may easily be remounted outside the basic layer, so that the protective suit is ready for use again.
[0009] US 5 884332 relates to a firefighter garment including a liner inspection system which enables a firefighter to inspect the liner at any time to ensure that the waterproof sealing means of the liner is intact. The liner has a moisture barrier and a thermal barrier which are permanently connected to one another at the upper edge portions thereof, such upper edge portions also being detachably connected to the outer shell. The lower edge portions of the moisture barrier and the thermal barrier are detachably connected to one another only at spaced points in such a manner that they can be easily detached to gain access to the space between the moisture barrier and the thermal barrier.
[0010] It is a disadvantage of the protective garments and the combinations of layers as proposed in the above documents, that the user of such garments may be wearing unnecessary layers of protection during a mission. It is in the interest of the user of the jacket that the need for thermal protection and the risk for heat stress are carefully considered and balanced. Heat stress can lead to cramps, exhaustion or even a heat stroke. Hence, in interventions where little or no thermal protection is required, unnecessary layers providing such thermal protection will in reality only add to the total weight of the protective clothing while endangering the functioning, safety and wellbeing of the wearer.
[0011] Based on the above, there therefore is a need for a personal protective equipment (PPE), more in particular for a protective jacket, which jacket has to be adaptable by a minimal intervention to render it suitable for a multitude of high-risk tasks, wherein said adapted jacket meets the requirements of the standards required of clothing for such tasks, wherein investment costs may be reduced, and wherein said jacket further provides a maximum of comfort for the user, e.g. without imposing unnecessary layers. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0012] The inventors have surprisingly found that the jacket according to the present invention fulfills the above mentioned needs and overcomes the above mentioned disadvantages.
[0013] In an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a jacket for firefighters having a body portion or body and two sleeves, further having an outside and an inside, said jacket comprising, in the direction from the outside to the inside
[0014] • a flame-resistant, abrasion-resistant outer fabric layer; and
[0015] • a liner, which liner is permanently connected to said outer fabric layer; wherein the jacket further comprises a middle layer, which is adapted to fit in between said outer fabric layer and said liner, and which is removably securable to said outer fabric layer and said liner, and wherein at the distal ends of the sleeves, said middle layer has a wristlet portion, arranged to protrude from said outer fabric layer when the respective middle layer is applied and / or secured between said outer fabric layer and said liner.
[0016] It is an advantage of the present invention that the jacket, having an outer fabric layer and a liner, and optionally a deliberately selected middle layer, qualifies for a wide range of technical missions, including fighting forest fires, structural fires as well as interventions involving liquids under pressure. Wildland firefighting is related to suppression of wildfires, wherein the term "wildfire" relates to uncontrolled and unplanned fire in an area of combustible vegetation. Wildland firefighting typically requires different techniques and equipment than those used in structural firefighting.

Claims
CLAIMS1. A jacket (10) for firefighters having a body (17) and two sleeves (18), further having an outside (15) and an inside (16), said jacket (10) comprising, in the direction from the outside (15) to the inside (16)- a flame-resistant, abrasion-resistant outer fabric layer (20); and- a liner (40), which liner is permanently connected to said outer fabric layer (20); wherein the jacket (10) further comprises a middle layer (30), which is adapted to fit in between said outer fabric layer (20) and said liner (40), and which is removably securable to said outer fabric layer (20) and said liner (40), and wherein at the distal end of the sleeve (30), said middle layer (30) has a wristlet portion (31), arranged to protrude from said outer fabric layer (20) when the respective middle layer (30) is applied in between said outer fabric layer (20) and said liner (40).
2. The jacket (10) according to claim 1, wherein said jacket (10) is provided with an opening (41) on the inside (16) of the jacket (10) for inserting and applying said middle layer (30) in between said outer fabric layer (20) and said liner (40), which opening (41) is closable by means of a first connection means (42), wherein said first connection means (42) relates to at least one of a plurality of buttons, a plurality of press buttons, a plurality of magnets, a zipper and / or a hook-and-loop fastener.
3. The jacket (10) according to claim 2, wherein said opening (41) is located at the lower part of the back of the jacket, preferably along the bottom hem (43) of the jacket, wherein said first connection means (42) is a zipper.

The jacket (10) according to any one of claims 1-3, wherein said outer fabric layer (20) is based on meta-aramid fibres; para-aramid fibres; polyamide-imide (PAI); phenylene benzobisoxazole (PBO) fibres, more in particular poly(p-phenylene-2,6- benzobisoxazole); polybenzimidazole (PBI) fibres; polyphenylene sulphide (PPS); polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE); polyetherimide; TLCP fibres; melamine-formaldehyde fibres; wool; flame retardant (FR) viscose; carbon; or a mixture or blend thereof.
5. The jacket (10) according to any one of claims 1-4, wherein said jacket (10) has a water vapor resistance (Ret) which has a value Ret < 10 m2Pa / W, in the absence of said middle layer (30) in between said outer fabric layer (20) and said liner (40).
6. The jacket (10) according to any one of claims 1-5, wherein said middle layer (30) relates to a fabric layer providing a thermal barrier, wherein said jacket (10) has a performance grade Y1 < 20 kPa, with respect to the norm EN 469:2020.
7. The jacket (10) according to any one of claims 1-5, wherein said middle layer (30) relates to a fabric layer providing a thermal barrier and a moisture barrier, wherein said jacket (10) has a performance grade Y2 > 20 kPa, with respect to the norm EN 469:2020.
8. The jacket (10) according to any one of claims 1-7, wherein middle layers (30) according to claim 7 and claim 8 are interchangeable.
9. The jacket (10) according to any one of claims 1-8, wherein said middle layer (30) is provided with a portion of a second connection means (46) for connecting to a cooperating portion of said second connection means (46), which cooperating portion is attached to a band (45) of fabric providing a moisture barrier, which band (45) of fabric providing a moisture barrier is permanently sewn to said outer fabric layer (20) and said liner (40), and / or to said outer fabric layer (20) and a band (44) or strip of fabric of an anti-wicking material, and is provided therein between, and which band (45) of fabric furthermore extends between said outer fabric layer (20) and said liner (40), or between said outer fabric layer (20) and said band (44), wherein said second connection means (46) relates to at least one of a plurality of buttons, a plurality of press buttons, a plurality of magnets, a zipper and / or a hook-and-loop fastener.
10. The jacket (10) according to claim 9, wherein said band (45) of fabric relates to a fabric layer according to claim 8, and / or wherein said band (45) of fabric extends from said sewing in between said outer fabric layer (20) and said liner (40), for at least 0.5 cm.

The jacket (10) according to any one of claims 1-10, wherein at the distal end of the sleeve (30), preferably at the level of the cuff of the jacket (10), the inside (16) of the outer fabric layer (20) is provided with a first part (61) of a third connection means (65), the outside (15) of said middle layer (30) is provided with a second part (62) of said third connection means (65),the inside (16) of said middle layer (30) is provided with a second part (63) of a fourth connection means (66), and the outside (15) of the liner (40) is provided with a first part (64) of said fourth connection means (66), wherein said third connection means (65) and said fourth connection means (66) relate, each independently, to at least one of a plurality of buttons, a plurality of press buttons, a plurality of magnets, a zipper and / or a hook-and-loop fastener, wherein said first part (61) and said second part (62), lying substantially opposite thereof, can be closed for removably connecting said outer fabric layer (20) to said middle layer (30) at said distal end of the sleeve (18), and wherein said second part (63) and said first part (64), lying substantially opposite thereof, can be closed for removably connecting said middle layer (30) to said liner (40) at said distal end of the sleeve (18).

The jacket (10) according to claim 11, wherein, in the absence of said middle layer (30) in between said outer fabric layer (20) and said liner (40), said third connection means (65) and said fourth connection means (66) relate to the same means, and said first part (61) of said third connection means (65) and said first part (64) of said fourth connection means (66), lying substantially opposite thereof, can be closed for removably connecting said liner (40) to said outer fabric layer (20) at said distal end of the sleeve (18).
13. The jacket (10) according to any one of claims 10-12, wherein at least one of said first part (61), second part (62) and / or second part (63) of said third and fourth connection means (65,66) is attached to an anti-wicking material.

A middle layer (30) for use in a jacket (10) according to any one of claim 1- 13, said middle layer being one of the following: a middle layer relating to a fabric layer providing a thermal barrier; a middle layer relating to a fabric layer providing a thermal barrier and a moisture barrier; a middle layer relating to a fabric layer providing a thermal barrier in first sections of the layer and a thermal barrier and a moisture barrier in second sections of the layer;a middle layer relating to a fabric layer providing a thermal barrier, further comprising a particulate barrier capacity based on a non-woven, preferably an electro-spun non-woven; and a middle layer relating to a fabric layer providing a thermal barrier, further comprising a filtration capacity based on active carbon.
15. A kit of parts comprising a jacket (10) for firefighters according to any one of claims 1-13 with or without said middle layer (30), and at least one further middle layer (30) as defined in any one of the claims 1 to 14.
