Description

Seed coating binderThe present invention relates to binder for a film and seed coating composition, to a method of forming a film and seed coating composition comprising said binder and coating on to a seed, and to a seed coated with said composition.Commercial agricultural practices have come to use coating compositions increasingly over the last few years. Typically these coating compositions are used to bind various components, such as agrochemical actives, to the surface of a plant or seed. The purpose of the coating compositions may include a number of functions including adhering an agrochemical active to the seed or plant surface, adhering a pigment to a seed or plant surface, or simply for adding volume or bulk to a seed. In all cases the coating is desirably easy to apply, remains fixed to the seed or plant surface, may be permeable to water and / or air, resistant to dust off, and forms uniform coatings. The present invention seeks to provide a binder suitable for use in coating compositions and formulations, where said binder is able to overcome the above described problems. Additionally, the present invention seeks to provide coatings which have desired properties of adhesion, dust off, germination, permeability, water retention etc. when applied to the seed surface. There is also a desire for said binders to be biobased and biodegradable. The present invention also provides for the use of the coating composition in agrochemical coating compositions. The present invention also seeks to provide the use of dilute coating composition for treatment of seeds.According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a film coating composition comprising i) a binder selected from an alkyd resin formed from C2 to C16 diacids, C6 to C30 fatty acids, and C3 to C8 polyols; andii) optionally, at least one selected from an agrochemical active, nutrient, or biostimulant.According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of forming a film coating composition which comprises combining i) a binder selected from an alkyd resin formed from C2 to C16 diacids, C6 to C30 fatty acids, and C3 to C8 polyols; and ii) optionally, at least one selected from an agrochemical active, nutrient, or biostimulant dispersed in a water medium.According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of coating seeds which comprises applying a seed coating composition which comprises a film coating composition in accordance with the first aspect, to said seeds.According to a fourth aspect of the present invention, there is provided seeds with a seed coating, said seed coating composition comprising a film coating composition in accordance with the first aspect.According to a fifth aspect of the present invention, there is provided the use of an alkyd resin formed from C2 to C16 diacids, C6 to C30 fatty acids, and C3 to C8 polyols, as a binder for a film coating composition for seeds.According to a sixth aspect of the present invention there is provided an emulsified formulation comprising a binder selected from an alkyd resin formed from C2 to C16 diacids, C6 to C30 fatty acids, and C3 to C8 polyols, suitable for aqueous seed application. It has been found that the binder of the present invention provides desired binder properties and is water dispersible. The binder maintains other good properties such as dust off, abrasion resistance and so forth, whilst also having desired biobased and biodegradable properties. Unless otherwise specified, these examples are provided only as an aid for understanding the applications illustrated in the present disclosure, and are not meant to be limiting in any fashion. The term ‘seed" as used in this application is meant to refer in particular to the ripened ovule of gymnosperms and angiosperms, which contain an embryo surrounded by a protective cover. The protective cover can comprise the seed coat (testa). Some seeds comprise a pericarp or fruit coat around the seed coat. In particular, when this layer is closely adhered to the seed, as in cereal kernels, it is in some cases referred to as a caryopsis or an achene. As used in this application, the term ‘seed coat" is meant to include a caryopsis or an achene. The term ‘seed" includes anything that can be planted in agriculture to produce plants, including pelleted seeds, true seeds, plant seedlings, rootstock, regenerable and plant forming tissue, and tubers or bulbs. The term ‘coating" as used in this application, is meant to refer to applying material to a surface of a seed, for instance as a layer of a material around a seed. Coating includes film coating, pelleting, and encrusting or a combination of these techniques as known in the art. It will be understood that the term ‘film coating" refers to a concentrated composition which can be diluted and formed into a slurry with other components added, such as agrochemical actives, in order to make a ‘seed coating" which is then applied to the seeds or bulbs. The term ‘seed coating composition" as used in this application is meant to refer to a composition to be used for coating of seed. The coating is preferably applied over substantially the entire surface of the seed, such as over 90% or more of the surface area of the seed, to form a layer. The coating is also found to be tough and flexible coating with good adhesion. It will be appreciated particle size and distribution is a factor which reflects the stability of the dispersion / emulsion. It is important that there is a homogeneous distribution of the particles to ensure stability for a longer period. It is important that any components added do no lead to particles coming together or cause phase separation. Therefore, stable particle size, homogeneous particle distribution, and limited particle size growth over time, is likely to provide more stability. In the form of a distribution of particle sizes, the particles would have a median volume particle diameter value. It will be understood that the median volume particle diameter refers to the equivalent spherical diameter corresponding to the point on the distribution which divides the population exactly into two equal halves. It is the point which corresponds to 50% of the volume of all the particles, read on the cumulative distribution curve relating volume percentage to the diameter of the particles i.e. 50% of the distribution is above this value and 50% is below. This value is referred to as the “D(v,0.5 / ’ value and is determined as described herein. Additionally, “D v.O.P ” values can also be referred to, and these values would be the equivalent spherical diameter corresponding to 90% of the volume of all the particles, read on the cumulative distribution curve relating volume percentage to the diameter of theparticles, i.e. they are the points where 10% of the distribution is above this value and 90% are below the value respectively. The particle size values, used to determine the D(v,0.9) values, are measured by techniques and methods as described in further detail herein. It is generally known that particle sizes of 200-18,000 nm are preferred in order to obtain a stable dispersion / emulsion having the desired properties. The particles present in the emulsion of the present invention may have a D(v,0.9) value in the range from 100 nm to 4,000 nm. Preferably, in the range from 150 nm to 3,500 nm. More preferably, in the range from 200 nm to 3,000 nm.All of the features described herein may be combined with any of the above aspects, in any combination.ExamplesIn order that the present invention may be more readily understood, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the following description. It will be understood that all tests and physical properties listed have been determined at atmospheric pressure and room temperature (i.e. 25°C), unless otherwise stated herein, or unless otherwise stated in the referenced test methods and procedures. The following test methods were used to determine performance of the adjuvant compositions.■ Molecular weight - This was determined using the GPC method with chromatograph Agilent 1260 Infinity / 1290 Infinity II, column PL gel 5 pm mixed D, and a refractive index detector. A 1 %w / v sample was made up in tetrahydrofuran solvent, and used in an injection volume of 50 pL, with flow rate 1 cm3min1through the column which was at a temperature of 40°C. Theanalysis time was 30 minutes and area normalisation was used. A standard of polystyrene (Agilent EasiVial PS-M 2ml GPC / SEC Calibration Standards; Mp range: 162 to 364,000 Da) was used.■ Acid value - A 5 g sample of the alkyd resin was accurately weighed (to 0.1 mg) into a 250 cm3flat-bottomed flask. 10 cm3xylene and a quantity of antibumping granules were added and the flask heated until the xylene began to boil and the anti-bumping granules moved freely when the flask was swirled. A 50 cm3portion of industrial denatured alcohol (IDA) was added and heated to brief reflux. 1 cm3of 1% phenolphthalein in IDA was added and the acidity titrated with 0.5 M aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The acid value was calculated as AV = 56.105xt / w mg KOH g where x = molarity of NaOH, T = titre (cm3) and w = weight of alkyd resin (g).■ Dust-off - This was measured by the industry standard, Heubach dust method provided by the European Seed Association. This is the accepted assessment of free floating dust and abrasion particles of treated seeds as a parameter of the quality of treated seeds. 200 grams of seeds were submitted to a five minute Heubach test type 1 in triplicate, averaging the results to a total amount of dust-off per 100 kilograms of seeds. A glass filter grade GF9 was weighed before and after testing to determine dust off amount.■ Germination Testing - Germination testing was carried out in accordance with the following test method:Approx. 1 m of paper towel (4 squares) is folded and wet with 20 mL water. 50 coated seeds are spread over the wet towel. The paper towel containing the seeds is then rolled up. It is then placed in a jar with a further 20 ml of water, covered with a plastic bag and secured. The jars are placed in a growth cabinet for 5 nights, 6 days (temperature controlled at 25°C and in darkness). The seeds are then classified and counted.Upon completion of the above protocol the seeds were split into six categories for no germination, sprout visible, root and sprout visible, multiple roots and sprout visible, multiple roots and sprout large sprout, multiple roots and large sprout with first with first leaf clearly visible. The conditions are in line with the International Rules for Seed Testing (ISTA).■ Percentage solids - An Ohaus MB 120 moisture analyser was used to assess the percentage solids. Samples were dried to a constant weight, allowing calculation of the percentage solids.■ Particle size values (PSD) D(v,0.9) - Particle size was analysed by dynamic light scattering using a Malvern Zetasizer using a particle refractive index of 1.56. Each sample was assessed and the average of 55 measurements recorded, with each measurement lasting 15 seconds. The following materials were used in the examples:■ Soy fatty acid - 8-12% C16:0, <6% C18:0, 20-35% C18:l, 45-60% C18:2, 2- 10% C18:3With other polyols, fatty acids, and diacids as stated in the relevant tables.■ Maxemul 7101 - non-ionic surfactant-based O / W emulsifier and dispersant■ Maxemul 7201 - anionic oil soluble surfactant■ Atlox 4913 - acrylic copolymer surfactant■ Atlas G-5002L - high HLB polyalkylene oxide block copolymer emulsifier■ Silcolapse 5.001 - silicone anti -foam■ Proxel GXL - anti-bacterial, formaldehyde free glycol / alcohol solutionBinder formationThe following methods were used to synthesis a range of alkyd resins for seed coating evaluation.■ Method 1 - Using xylene as water removal aidA 5-necked flask equipped with a magnetic sealed stirrer guide with PTFE centrifugal stirrer, temperature feedback probe and isomantle, a nitrogen inlet and outlet via a Dean and Stark trap (pre-filled with xylene) with a Liebig condenser to an exit bubbler was charged with fatty acid, polyol and xylene (3 wt.%), and heated with stirring (350 rpm) under a flow of nitrogen (15 mlmin ') to 220°C until the quantity of water collected in the Dean and Stark trap was equal to the theoretical quantity calculated for an acid value of 15 mg KOH g’1.The reaction mix was cooled to 170°C and diacid added. The reaction was heated to 220°C as before until the acid value had fallen to ca. 20 mg KOH g ' . The reaction apparatus was re-configured for distillation and the xylene was removed. Vacuum was applied (<10 mbar) to continue the esterification reaction for an additional until an acid value of 10(±2) mg KOH g1was achieved. After cooling to below 100°C the alkyd resin was obtained as a viscous yellow oil.Method 1 used when the diacid was 6 carbons or less, i.e. for polymers P2, P3, P4, P7, P8, and P9.■ Method 2 - No xyleneA 5-necked flask equipped with a magnetic sealed stirrer guide with PTFE centrifugal stirrer, temperature feedback probe and isomantle, a nitrogen inlet and outlet via a distillation arm with a Liebig condenser and receiver flask to an exit bubbler was charged with fatty acid, polyol and diacid. The reaction mix was heated to 190°C for 1 hour and the temperature was increased to 220°C for a further 1 hour. The distillation arm was replaced with a simple pot-to-pot distillation tube and vacuum applied to 200 mbar and the reaction allow to continue until an acid value of 10±2 mg KOH g1was achieved. The alkyd resin was obtained as a viscous yellow oil.Method 2 used when the diacid is greater than 6 carbons, i.e. for polymers Pl, P5, and P6.The following polymers in Table 1 were formed using the methods described herein.Table 1. Alkyd resins formedThe acid values and molecular weights of the synthesised alkyd resin polymers were then determined using the methods described herein, with results shown in Table 2.Table 2. Acid values and molecular weightsEmulsions formedThe alkyd resin polymers were then used to form a number of emulsion systems. The emulsion systems were formed using the following method:A cylindrical (flat bottomed) glass vessel with a full surrounding jacket for a heating fluid, equipped with an Intermig impeller (EKATO) having a diameter only slightly less than the vessel was charged with the alkyd resin (200 g). The circulator fluid temperature was set to 75°C and the stirring rate to 50 rpm.A quantity of water calculated to give the required final weight for the emulsion was charged to a flat-bottomed flask and placed on a hotplate set to the emulsification temperature to pre-heat the water for emulsification.Once the set temperature was reached a quantity of KOH calculated to neutralise 40% of the acid value of the alkyd resin was added to the emulsification vessel and the stirring rate increased to 100 rpm. After 30 min. the emulsifiers were added to the vessel (3% each on alkyd weight) and the stirrer speed increased to 175 rpm. After an additional 30 min. the circulator fluid temperature was decreased to the emulsification temperature for the particular alkyd resin (determined by alkyd viscosity).Addition of the water for emulsification was begun by peristaltic pump precalibrated to an addition rate of 0.4 cm3min1; inversion of the emulsion phase from W / O to O / W occurred after approximately half of the total volume of water had been added, after which the water addition rate was increases incrementally to 1.6 cm3min1until addition was complete.Table 3. Alkyd resin emulsion systemsThe results show in Table 3 for PSD and solid content demonstrate that a stable emulsion was formed.Seed coating formedImportant to the success of any seed coating is the film-former agent that will improve the adherence of components that includes active ingredient to the surface of the seed. The addition of the film-former agent requires a good deal of precision, identifying correct chemistry that will provide adherence under mechanical stress in order to avoid dust-off release and abrasion performance without compromising flowability and germination. The binder of the present invention was therefore assessed with regard to these properties. Coating formulations were prepared using the following method. All ingredients except premix water, xanthan, Vangel B and imidacloprid were combined under stirring 500 rpm. Imidacloprid was added whilst under continuous stirring. The slurry was then milled for 15 minutes 3,500 rpm using an Eigar Torrence mini motor mull. The remaining ingredients were added as a premix with stirring 500 rpm, and the formulation was stirred until homogeneous at 500 rpm.A formulation was prepared with the following recipes as shown in Table 4.Table 4. Imidacloprid based formulationSeed TreatmentThe formulation formed were applied as a seed treatment after 24 hours at room temperature. The treatment was applied to corn seeds at a treatment rate of 0.6 g A.I. per kg of wheat seed. The formulation was diluted to a slurry rate of 10.4 ml / kg (in accordance with Valent published patent application US2012 / 088806) and 1.03 ml of the FS and 9.37 ml of deionised water was used to form the slurry. The seeds were treated, with 500g of corn seeds treated with 1.04ml per 100g (5.2ml in total) of slurry in a Winterseiger drum seed coater seed treater for 1 minute.Dust off resultsDust-off testing measures the amount of dust released from the seed. Treated seeds were put into a Heubach Dustmeter device which keeps the seeds gently circulating inside a small drum with an air stream passing through, and a fiberglass filter to trap dust particles. The methodology measures seed treatment (active ingredient or other components) that flake off or result in dust. Overall, the seed treatment desirably should have a high resistance to abrasion with minimal dust loss.Table 5. Treatment 1 Imidacloprid FSUnits shown are g / lOOkg of seed. Germination resultsThe stages refer to growth stages of the life cycle, where the higher the number the more advanced the growth stage. Some prior binders can negatively affect seed germination. Table 8 shows germination results for two treatments with various alkyd resins.
