Description

RADIO FREQUENCY UNIT AND RADIO STRUCTURE COMPRISING THE SAMETechnical Field

[0001] The present disclosure generally relates to the technical field of communication, and particularly to a radio frequency (RF) unit and a radio structure comprising the same. Background

[0002] This section introduces aspects that may facilitate better understanding of the present disclosure. Accordingly, the statements of this section are to be read in this light and are not to be understood as admissions about what is in the prior art or what is not in the prior art.

[0003] Base station (BS) is an important part of a mobile communication system, and may include a radio unit (RU) and an antenna unit (AU) . Considering the installation / fixation / occupation, smaller volume and lighter weight is always an important evolution direction in BS design, including legacy base station, street macro, micro, small cell and advanced antenna system (AAS) .

[0004] With the development of advance radio system, the need for a smart radio with high performance and a small size is growing rapidly. Highly integrated AAS system with multi-channels is developing rapidly in recently years. Highly integrated macro system with multi-bands is also under development. For those radio systems, a reduced size and an improved transmission efficiency with a lower cost are desired.

[0005] In the RF channel, especially the transmission channel, a high integration solution may comprise a power amplifier, an isolator, an RF filter, an antenna integrated on the print circuit board (PCB) . It is to be known that there are two key factors which determine the total loss of the radio system. One is the loss of each component (such as the isolator, the filter) , and the other is the loss of the transmission line between each two components.

[0006] In the prior art, multi-layer PCB with FR4 material is widely used in radio systems due to its lower cost and easy for mass production. Both RF function and control signal can be fulfilled in one board by soldering the respective components at the top or bottom of the multi-layer PCB, wherein the RF and control signals can be transmitted via transmission lines at different layers of the PCB, which can simplify the radio solution. However, the FR4 material has a large dielectric loss, and the transmission loss thereof will increase rapidly with the increasing of operation frequency. Of course, other possible materials may be used for the PCB, but such materials will greatly increase the cost.

[0007] Therefore, a high integration solution with a lower loss and an acceptable cost is in need for radio systems.Summary

[0008] This summary is provided to introduce a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are further described below in the detailed description. This summary is not intended to identify key features or essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended to be used to limit the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0046] The embodiments of the present disclosure are described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. It should be understood that these embodiments are discussed only for the purpose of enabling those skilled in the art to better understand and thus implement the present disclosure, rather than suggesting any limitations on the scope of the present disclosure. Reference throughout this  specification to features, advantages, or similar language does not imply that all of the features and advantages that may be realized with the present disclosure should be or are in any single embodiment of the disclosure. Rather, language referring to the features and advantages is understood to mean that a specific feature, advantage, or characteristic described in connection with an embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present disclosure. Furthermore, the described features, advantages, and characteristics of the disclosure may be combined in any suitable manner in one or more embodiments. Those skilled in the relevant art will recognize that the disclosure may be practiced without one or more of the specific features or advantages of a particular embodiment. In other instances, additional features and advantages may be recognized in certain embodiments that may not be present in all embodiments of the disclosure.

[0047] Generally, all terms used herein are to be interpreted according to their ordinary meaning in the relevant technical field, unless a different meaning is clearly given and / or is implied from the context in which it is used. All references to a / an / the element, apparatus, component, means, step, etc. are to be interpreted openly as referring to at least one instance of the element, apparatus, component, means, step, etc., unless explicitly stated otherwise. Any feature of any of the embodiments disclosed herein may be applied to any other embodiment, wherever appropriate. Likewise, any advantage of any of the embodiments may apply to any other embodiments, and vice versa. Other objectives, features and advantages of the enclosed embodiments will be apparent from the following description.

[0048] Figs. 1 (a) and 1 (b) schematically show an RF unit according to the present disclosure. The RF unit 100 is made of a ceramic material and is formed as a structure with a cavity 101, comprising an outer surface 102, a mounting surface 103 (hereinafter also referred to as SMT surface) for soldering with a PCB by a surface mount technology (SMT) process and an inner surface 104 delimiting said cavity 101, the inner surface 104 comprising a bottom surface and circumferential side walls of the cavity. The outer surface 102 is metalized to provide an electromagnetic shielding  for the entire RF unit 100, and the SMT surface 103 is at least partially electrically connected with the outer surface 102 to form a grounding surface therewith. It should be understood that the shape of the RF unit 100 may be in various forms as long as it can achieve the functions intended herein. For example, as shown in Figs. 12 (a) and 12 (b) , the RF unit may have a configuration having a circular cross section or a rectangular cross section.

[0049] Advantageously, at least one device may be provided on the inner surface 104 of the RF unit 100, the device using a metalized surface line as a transmission line for signal transmission. As such, it is possible to integrate a plurality of devices in the RF unit of the ceramic material, so as to achieve a lower transmission loss and a reduced size of the radio system.

[0050] For example, the device may be a device implemented by a metalized surface line (e.g., a filter) , or may be an active or passive device soldered on the inner surface. The desired RF function can be achieved by means of the metalized surface line. It will be appreciated that, to realize the RF functionality (e.g., in order to obtain an electromagnetic field as shown in Fig. 4 (b) ) , it is typically required to include a signal layer consisting of metalized surface line (s) , a dielectric layer (e.g., a layer of the ceramic material having a dielectric constant εr) and a reference ground. The metalized surface line may have three different basic forms, i.e., a microstrip line 110-1 as shown in Fig. 4 (a) , a coplanar waveguide 110-2 as shown in Fig. 4 (c) , and a stripline 110-3 as shown in Fig. 4 (d) , depending on the different distances between the metalized surface line and the reference ground.

[0051] Compared to the solutions known in the prior art, the RF unit according to the present disclosure has numerous advantages: on one hand, by designing some passive devices with the low-loss ceramic material, the loss of the devices can be reduced, and on the other hand, by integrating one or more RF elements in the ceramic RF unit which use the low-loss ceramic material as the transmission line, the transmission loss can be greatly reduced, and a smaller structural size can be obtained.

[0052] Furthermore, by mounting one or more of the above-described RF units 100 (as shown in Fig. 2) on the PCB 200, it is possible to allow some devices intended to be mounted on the PCB to be integrated within the RF unit, thus enabling a PCB of a reduced size: for example, in a case where the area of the PCB for arranging the components is limited, it is feasible to transfer some of the devices into these RF units.

[0053] With continued reference to Fig. 3, which schematically shows a specific embodiment of the RF unit according to the present disclosure, a metalized surface line 110 is provided on the inner surface 104 of the RF unit 100. From both ends of the metalized surface line 110 extend two ceramic posts 110a, 110b in a direction substantially perpendicular to the metalized surface line and towards the SMT surface 103, each ceramic post having a metalized end surface in flush with the SMT surface 103, the metalized end faces of the two ceramic posts being intended to be soldered with the PCB 200 and electrically connected to each other via a metalized line on a side surface of each ceramic post and the metalized surface line 110, thereby allowing signal transmission via the PCB.

[0054] It may be advantageous to electrically connect such ceramic posts to corresponding locations on the PCB 200, in the case that there are multiple components on the PCB 200 that need to be interconnected. For example, as shown in Fig. 5 (b) , when it is desired to connect the devices 1C and 2A on the PCB 200, it is possible to dispose a connecting line across two different layers of the PCB 200, or to enlarge the size of the PCB, so as to avoid the crossing of the connecting lines for the multiple components. However, by providing the RF unit 100 as shown in Fig. 3 on the PCB to electrically connect the ceramic post 110a, 110b with the respective devices (e.g., devices 1C, 2A) on the PCB (see Fig. 5 (a) ) , the conductive connection of the two devices can be fulfilled without increasing the size of the PCB. More advantageously, since the transmission channel between the two devices is implemented by the metalized surface line using a low-loss ceramic material, the total loss of the system is greatly reduced. In addition, after the RF unit 100 is soldered on  the PCB 200 via the SMT surface 103, the outer surface 102 of the RF unit 100 can provide electromagnetic shielding for the whole unit (including various components such as component 201 disposed in the RF unit) .

[0055] As an alternative embodiment of the ceramic posts, one or both ends of the metalized surface line 110 may extend to the SMT surface to form signal pad (s) (as will be described in detail below in connection with Figs. 7-9) , the signal pad (s) being intended to be soldered with the PCB, thereby allowing signal transmission via the PCB.

[0056] The two ways for achieving a conductive connection with the PCB (either using ceramic posts or using signal pads) determine different routing ways of the transmission line. For example, when the ceramic posts are soldered to the PCB to achieve the conductive connection, the transmission line needs to pass through the inner layer structure of the PCB. By contrast, when the signal pads are soldered to the PCB to achieve the conductive connection, the transmission line can pass through the inner layer structure of the PCB or extend over the main plane surface of the PCB. Thus, the two ways may be selected depending on the specific location of the signal connection points and / or the routing way of the transmission line desired by the user.

[0057] With continued reference to Fig. 6, a further specific embodiment of the RF unit according to the present disclosure is schematically illustrated. On the inner surface 104 of the RF unit 100, two metalized surface line structures as shown in Fig. 3 are provided, wherein on the inner surface 104 there is also provided a metalized wall structure 106 for isolating the two structures, e.g., avoiding signal interference between the two structures. As shown in Fig. 6, the wall structure 106 is connected to a grounding surface and forms a chamber 1061 to enclose one of the metalized surface line structures. Of course, solutions are also conceivable in which the chamber formed by the wall structure is used to enclose the devices arranged on the PCB in order to isolate the devices arranged on the PCB and / or the devices arranged on the inner surface 104 of the RF unit. For example, Fig. 5 (a) shows a chamber defined by  the wall structure for isolating the device 201 disposed on the PCB 200 from other components; Fig. 8 shows a wall structure 107 in the form of a shielding wall which can isolate a plurality of devices arranged on the RF unit 100; Fig. 10 shows a chamber defined by the wall structure (s) for isolating the device 202 disposed on the PCB 200 from the device 108 disposed in the RF unit 100 and some other devices.

[0058] Advantageously, it will be appreciated that one or more windows 1071 may be provided in the wall structure 107 to facilitate the arrangement or routing of the transmission line, for example as shown in Fig. 8.

[0059] Specific embodiments of the RF unit according to the present disclosure, in which a plurality of devices utilizing a metalized surface line as a signal transmission line are integrated, will be described in detail below in conjunction with Figs. 7-9. These devices may be passive devices that are implemented entirely by metalized surface lines, wherein at least one end of the metalized surface line may extend to the SMT surface to form a signal pad. The devices may also be active or passive devices soldered on the inner surface, wherein at least one end of the active or passive device is connected to a metalized surface line, one end of which may extend to the SMT surface to form a signal pad to realize signal input / output.

[0060] According to a specific embodiment as shown in Fig. 7, a filter implemented by a metalized surface line 120, which may be formed as a low-pass filter (LPF) , is provided on the inner surface of the RF unit. The metalized surface line 120 functions as a transmission line, both ends of which extend to the SMT surface 103 to form respective signal pads 121, 122 intended to be soldered to the PCB. As shown in Fig. 7, the signal pads 121, 122 are separated from the grounding surface via a non-metalized region 1031, the grounding surface being formed by a portion of the SMT surface 103 electrically connected to the metalized outer surface 102.

[0061] According to another specific embodiment as shown in Fig. 8, a filter implemented by a metalized surface line 120 is provided on the inner surface of the RF unit, both ends of the filter extending to the SMT surface 103 to form respective  signal pads 121, 122, which are separated from the grounding surface via a non-metalized region. In addition, a coupler implemented by a further metalized surface line 130 is provided on one end side of the filter to couple in / out a signal therefrom. One end of the coupler extends to the SMT surface 103 to form a signal pad 131. Referring to Fig. 8, similar to the signal pads 120, 121, the signal pad 131 is separated from the grounding surface by a non-metalized region. The other end of the coupler is connected to one end of a resistor 140 soldered on the inner surface 104, and the other end of the resistor 140 is connected to a portion 1041 of the grounding surface. The portion 1041 is formed by metalizing a portion of the inner surface 104 and is conductively connected with the grounding surface formed by the SMT surface and the outer surface 102. In the RF unit shown in Fig. 8, a metalized wall structure 107 is also provided, which is also connected to the grounding surface via the portion 1041. Advantageously, a window 1071 is provided at one end of the wall structure 107 to facilitate the arrangement or routing of the transmission line. Of course, it is also possible to provide one or more windows at other suitable positions on the wall structure.

[0062] According to a further specific embodiment as shown in Fig. 9, a filter implemented by a metalized surface line 120 is provided on the inner surface of the RF unit, one end of the filter extending to the SMT surface 103 to form a signal pad 122 (which is separated from the grounding surface via a non-metalized region) and the other end of the filter is connected to an isolator 150 which is soldered on the inner surface. The isolator 150 comprises three ports, wherein a first port is connected to one end of the metalized surface line 120 for the filter, and a second and third ports are connected to two further metalized surface lines 160, 170 respectively, which extend to the SMT surface to form signal pads for the isolator 150, each of which is likewise separated from the grounding surface via a non-metalized region.

[0063] The specific embodiments depicted in Figs. 7-9 involve devices implemented by metalized surface lines and / or passive devices (e.g., resistor 140, isolator 150) soldered on the inner surface. Of course, it is contemplated that the active devices  may be disposed on the inner surface. In a manner similar to that of Figs. 7-9, the active device can be connected with one or more metalized surface line, one end of which can extend to the SMT surface to form an RF signal pad or a direct current (DC) control pad, which is separated from the grounding surface by a non-metalized region.

[0064] In order to enable the RF unit to integrate as many devices as possible to achieve a miniaturized design of the PCB, Fig. 11 schematically illustrates in a cross sectional view an RF unit comprising a double-layer structure. In the RF unit, a ceramic partition 108 is provided, which extends in a direction substantially parallel to the main plane P of the PCB, thereby dividing the cavity of the RF unit into two sub-cavities, i.e., upper and lower cavities. The ceramic partition 108 comprises a first surface 108a and a second surface 108b opposite to each other in the thickness direction, the first and second surfaces 108a, 108b constituting a part of the inner surface of the RF unit and being capable of having one or more devices disposed thereon.

[0065] Specifically, as shown in Fig. 11, a first structural device may be disposed on the first surface 108a and a second structural device may be disposed on the second surface 108b. The two structural devices may be electrically connected via a metalized through hole 1081 of the ceramic partition 108. Of course, the two structural devices may also be electrically connected via a transmission line that passes through a window in the ceramic partition 108. With such a design comprising the ceramic partition 108, the RF unit can be divided into two different spaces for integrating more devices. Thus, a highly integrated radio structure can be formed by mounting one or more RF units of the above discussed on the PCB.

[0066] In the double-layer structure as shown in Fig. 11, the RF unit is provided with a cover 109 which is detachably assembled. After the placement of all devices in the unit, the cover 109 is then mounted on the top of the ceramic structure, the entire  outer surface of the cover 109 being metalized to constitute a portion of the metalized outer surface of the RF unit.

[0067] According to the RF unit of the present invention, a plurality of devices can be integrated in the ceramic RF unit so as to provide a possible solution for the miniaturization design of a radio system, and meanwhile, a low-loss ceramic material is used to implement passive devices or used as the transmission line, so that the structural size of the radio system is reduced at a lower cost, and the loss of the system is greatly reduced. In addition, the RF unit can also provide the electromagnetic shielding for devices arranged within the RF unit and / or some devices on the PCB when it is soldered on the PCB.
