Description

[0001] Support bracket and method for applying a roof covering .

[0002] The present invention relates to the protection of roof edges of existing buildings or buildings under construction, more speci fically to protect the workplace from falls during construction .

[0003] More speci fically the invention relates to support brackets for safety rails or scaf folds applied to a roof edge , and to construction works that are carried out while the safety rail is applied, such as while applying a roof covering, for example .

[0004] During the construction or the maintenance of buildings it may people may be required to work on raised floors or flat roofs that are open at the edges . This can be dangerous . It is known, and also legally required for safety reasons , to provide safety rails in the form of temporary protective barriers at such open edges to protect the workplace from falls during construction .

[0005] In practice the edges may be at the same height as the upper side of the raised floors or flat roofs , but often the edges protrude above such floors or roofs . More speci fically, the invention is aimed at safety rails that can be attached to such protruding edges .

[0006] GB2291920A discloses a safety rail whereby clamps are mounted to the wall . The attachment of the clamp is by clamping a protruding section of the wall to its facing sides . An upright post is placed on every clamp . A rail is secured between the posts .

[0007] An obj ective of the invention is to provide an ef fective safety rail that can be ef ficiently and easily assembled and disassembled . Furthermore , it is an obj ective that the roof edge protection can remain in place throughout the construction works , such as for example the complete finish of a flat roof , including the roof flashing of the roof curb, and as such forms a permanent safety feature .

[0008] It is a further obj ective of the invention to provide a safety rail that forms as few obstructions as possible for carrying out the works on or near the open edges of a building or a building under construction .

[0009] It is also an obj ective to provide a safety rail that allows a roof covering to be provided safely which also covers the roof edge in a qualitative way .

[0010] To at least partially meet one or several of the aforementioned obj ectives , the invention, in one aspect , provides an alternative support bracket for attachment to a protruding edge of a building structure to protect the edge from falls during construction . Typically, the edges are protruding parts of walls , made from a porous material , such as for example concrete , aerated concrete , or bricks , consisting breadthways of one or several layers , with or without insulation in between, and provided with an upper side , an inner side and an outer side . However, it must be clear that the use of the support brackets according to the invention is not intended to be limited to applying protective safety rails on buildings , but can be used in every suitable context for every suitable purpose , such as for example applying scaf folds .

[0011] Typically, support brackets are made from metal , for example steel . Characteristic for the support bracket is that it is provided with three supports , comprising an inner support , a top support and an outer support , with which the support bracket when in use can rest on the inner side , the upper side and the outer side of the edge respectively, whereby the top support and at least one of the inner support and the outer support are each provided with an adj ustable clamping section, whereby the adj ustable clamping section of the top support comprises first coupling parts that can be coupled with second coupling parts provided at the upper side of the edge by screwing, and whereby the support bracket is configured such that , when in use , the support bracket can be selectively clamped on the edge by adj usting the clamping sections of the top support and the at least one of the inner support or the outer support such that the support bracket clamps the edge between the inner support and the outer support and / or such that the support bracket clamps the edge with the top support and is connected to the edge by the screw coupling of the first coupling parts with the second coupling parts .

[0012] The advantage of this configuration of the support bracket is that i f , when in use , the support bracket clamps the edge with the top support , it not only clampingly rests on the edge but is additionally detachably connected to the edge by the screw coupling of the first coupling parts with the second coupling parts . This benefits the stabil ity and safety, among others because said coupling between the top support and the edge prevents the support bracket from shi fting relative to the edge and of fers resistance against the exertion of a tensile force on the support bracket .

[0013] In an embodiment according to the invention the first coupling parts of the clamping section of the top support comprise a floor plate provided with a hole and a ring nut , and the second coupling parts comprise a tension bar which on the upper side protrudes from the edge for connecting the top support to the edge , configured such that , when in use , the floor plate with the hole is placed over the tension bar on the edge and is coupled by screwing the ring nut on the part of the tension bar protruding from the hole of the floor plate .

[0014] Clamping with the top support may or may not be in combination with the inner support or the outer support such that the support bracket clamps the edge only with the top support , between the top support and the inner support , or between the top support and the outer support respectively . When the inner support is provided with an adj ustable clamping section, the outer support can be executed as a fixed support or alternatively as a support with an adj ustable clamping section . In the latter case , optionally the inner support can be executed as a fixed support . This configuration of the support bracket allows a selection to be made depending on the works to be carried out between di f ferent stable and safe attachment options of the support bracket , i . e . resting on all three supports , only resting on the inner support and the outer support , or only resting on the inner support and the top support , or only resting on the top support and the outer support , or only resting on the top support . Typical works are , for example , installing utility lines , screed, a vapour barrier, insulation, bitumen, EPDM, or another roof covering . I f the works are not carried out near the edge , the support brackets can be attached according to one of the three options , of which the option whereby the edge is clamped with all three supports is the most stable and safe . I f the works need to be carried out near the edge or at the inner side of the edge the best attachment option of the support bracket is where the edge is only clamped by the top support and in other words no use is made of the inner support and the outer support such that the inner side and outer side of the edge are free to carry out works . I f the works need to be carried out on the upper side of the edge , the best attachment option of the support bracket is where the edge is only clamped by the inner support and the outer support and in other words no use is made of the top support such that the upper side of the edge is free to carry out works .

[0015] In an embodiment according to the invention the support bracket comprises an oblong base and two legs which are attached at the base at a distance from each other . Said distance can be adj ustable . Typically, the base and the legs are tubular hollow profiles with a polygonal or round cross-section . The one leg is connected to the inner support and the other leg is connected to the outer support . The support bracket is configured such that , when in use in the condition that the support bracket clamps the edge between the inner support and the outer support , the base extends above the edge and the legs extend at the facing sides of the edge . Typically, the inner support and outer support protrude inwardly relative to the legs such that upon clamping, the facing sides of the edge are only contacted by the outer support and the inner support respectively . I f the outer support is a fixed support , clamping of the edge is obtained by adj usting the clamping section of the inner support such that the distance between the inner support and the outer support decreases . I f the outer support is also provided with a clamping section, clamping can be obtained by moving the relevant clamping sections towards each other by adj usting both or one of the clamping sections .

[0016] Further in this embodiment , the top support of the support bracket is connected to the base . This can be done by providing the base with an attachment structure in a position between the two legs with which the clamping section of the top support is adj ustably connected . When in use , the base extends over the edge . Or protrude? The adj ustable connection is such that , when in use , the distance between the clamping section and the upper side of the edge is increased or decreased by adj usting . Optionally, the attachment structure can be slideably applied over the longitudinal axis of the base on the base allowing some more leeway with regard to the location on which the top support rests on the edge when in use .

[0017] In an embodiment according to the invention, the clamping section of the top support of the support bracket comprises a floor plate , with which the support bracket can support on the upper side of the edge when in use , and an upright body that is attached perpendicularly to the floor plate and can be adj ustably coupled to the base such that when in use the distance can be set between the floor plate and the edge . To this end, the attachment structure may, for example , comprise a tubular part in which or over which the upright body is slideably applied toward or away from the edge when in use .

[0018] In a further embodiment according to the invention, the base is made from two base parts , whereby the base parts are telescopically coupled with each other . The base parts are each connected to a corresponding leg and as such form substantially L-shaped sections , whereby the leg of the first L-shaped section is connected to one of the inner support or the outer support and the leg of the second L- shaped section is connected to the other of the inner support or outer support , and whereby the inner support and outer support face each other . Preferably, in this configuration the attachment structure is provided with the second L-shaped section on the base part . This has the advantage that the first L-shaped section can be uncoupled from the second one and can be removed in the condition that the support bracket clamps the edge with the top support . Consequently, there are fewer obstructions to carry out works near the edge or at the inner side or outer side of the edge . Optionally, the first L-shaped section can be rotatably coupled with the second L-shaped section such that the first L-shaped section can be rotated such with the longitudinal axis of the base as rotation shaft that it does overlap or overlaps less with the upright side of the edge such that it is accessible more easily . Typically, the rotation angle is an angle in the range of 90 ° to 180 ° relative to the position in which the support rests against the upright when in use .

[0019] Also in an embodiment according to the invention, the base part of the second L-shaped section is provided with an outwardly protruding part pointing upward when in use in or over which an upright support post can be applied . Typically, the post is provided with one or several rail supports such that a rail in the form of tubes or edge boarding made from wood, metal or plastic can be applied between successive posts on successive support brackets . Additionally, rail supports can be provided on the support bracket , more speci fically on the leg that is connected to the outer support and / or on the protruding part of the base part of the second L-shaped section .

[0020] In another aspect , the invention provides a method for applying a roof covering comprising the steps of :

[0021] - applying a roof covering up to a protruding edge whereby, during the application, support brackets are clamped on the edge to protect the edge from falls , whereby the support brackets are provided with three supports , comprising an inner support ( 9 ) , a top support ( 22 ) and an outer support ( 28 ) , with which the support bracket , when in use , can rest on an inner side , an upper side and an outer side of the edge respectively, whereby the top support and at least one of the inner support and outer support , are each provided with an adj ustable clamping section ( 10 , 23 ) , and whereby the support bracket is configured such that the support bracket can be selectively clamped on the edge by adj usting the clamping sections such that the support bracket clamps the edge between the inner support and the outer support , and / or such that the support bracket clamps the edge with the top support ,

[0022] - applying the roof covering on the inner side of the edge while the support brackets only clamp the edge with the top support , or while the support brackets only clamp the edge between the top support and the outer support , and

[0023] - applying the roof covering on the upper side of the edge while the support brackets only clamp the edge between the inner support and the outer support .

[0024] An advantage of this method is that the inner side of the edge and the upper side of the edge are also easily and safely accessible and no holes or incisions need to be made in the roof covering, for example , to bypass supports , and such holes or incisions thus do not have to be sealed afterwards which benefits the ef ficiency and quality . Furthermore , i f the roof covering comprises a film or mat such as , for example , an EPDM mat , the advantage of this work method is that it can be appl ied in one whole from the flat section up to over the inner side and upper side of the edge such that there are fewer seams and thus also less risk of leaks .

[0025] In an embodiment according to the invention, whereby the support bracket is made from two extendably coupled L- shaped sections , the step of applying the roof covering on the inner side of the edge is preceded by the step of removing the first L-shaped section . Thus , there are even fewer obstructions to carry out works at the edge .

[0026] In a further embodiment according to the invention, whereby the support bracket is made from two extendable L-shaped sections , rotatably coupled relative to each other, the step of applying the roof covering on the inner side of the edge is preceded by the step of rotating the first L-shaped section such that the leg of the first L-shaped section no longer overlaps with the inner side of the edge . Thus , the edge is better accessible to carry out works at the edge .

[0027] With the intention of better showing the characteri stics of the invention according to the invention of a preferred embodiment of a support bracket for attaching to a protruding edge to protect the edge from falls and a method for safely applying a roof covering are described hereinafter, by way of an example without any limiting nature , with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein : figure 1 schematically shows a perspective view of an embodiment according to the invention of a support bracket clamped with three supports on a protruding edge ; figure 2 shows the support bracket of Fig . 1 whereby the protruding edge is only clamped by the top support and the outer support ; figure 3 shows the support bracket of Fig . 1 whereby the protruding edge is only clamped by the inner support and the outer support ; figure 4 shows the support bracket of Fig . 1 on which a post and edge boarding are applied; figure 5 schematically shows a perspective view of the di f ferent steps A to E of an embodiment of the method according to the invention for applying a roof covering .

[0028] Figures 1 , 2 and 3 show the support bracket 1 attached in di f ferent ways on a protruding edge 2 .

[0029] In this example , the protruding edge is formed by a part of a wall that protrudes above a flat roof . Breadthways , the wall is made from several layers , more speci fically a layer of aerated concrete blocks forming the inner wall 6 , a layer of fagade stones forming the support 8 , and a layer of insulation 7 between the inner wall and the support .

[0030] The support bracket 1 has an oblong base 13 which when in use extends above the edge 2 on which the support bracket is attached . The base 13 is connected to two legs 15 which when in use extend along the facing sides 3 , 5 of the edge 2 . In the example shown the base 13 consists of two parts 14 and each base part forms an L-shaped section 16 , 17 with the corresponding leg 15 it is connected to . Said L-shaped sections are formed from hollow steel profiles with a rectangular cross-section . The L-shaped sections 16 , 17 can be extendably coupled with each other via their base parts by making the outer contour of the cross-section of the one base part smaller than the inner contour of the crosssection of the other base part such that they can be slid in and out of each other . I f relevant , the relative position of the base profiles 14 can be secured using a screw or clamp connection . In the example shown, the connection is formed by providing a hole in one of the base profiles 14 and a hole pattern at one and the same side of the other base profile 14 whereby a coupling can be realised i f the hole of the one profile overlaps with a hole of the hole pattern of the other profile by inserting a pin through the overlapping holes . The relative position can be determined depending on the desired distance between the legs 15 of the support bracket 1 .

[0031] The leg 15 of the one L-shaped section 16 of the support bracket is connected to the inner support 9 , the leg 15 of the other L-shaped section 17 is connected to the outer support 28 . The inner support 9 comprises an adj ustable clamping section 10 that can be moved inwardly away or toward the leg by turning a handle 12 that is connected to a screw shaft 11 via a passage in the leg 15 with the clamping section 10 . The outer support 28 is a fixed support with a clamping plate 28a which is attached via a connecting piece 28b to the corresponding leg 15 , for example with a screw or welded j oint . In this example the outer support is a fixed support . Obviously, it is also possible to opt for an adj ustable support . On the leg 15 that is connected to the outer support 28 a rail support

[0032] 31a is provided .

[0033] On the base part 14 of the L-shaped section of the support bracket 1 that is connected to the outer support 28 an attachment structure 18 is movably applied . The attachment structure consists of two hollow beam-shaped sectors with open ends that are attached to each other The first segment of the attachment structure 18 is slid over the base part 14 of the L-shaped section of the support bracket 1 that is connected to the outer support 28 . The position of the attachment structure 18 on the base 13 can be secured by tightening a screw shaft 20 through a passage in the attachment structure 18 against the base 13 using a handle 21 . When in use , when the base 13 protrudes through the one segment of the attachment structure 18 , the open ends of the other segment 19 of the attachment structure 18 face the upper side 4 of the protruding edge 2 . The top support 22 contains a clamping section 23 , the upright part 23a of which is slideably inserted and protrudes from the tubular segment 19 of the attachment structure 18 . The position of the clamping section 23 can be secured in terms of height by tightening a screw shaft 26 through a passage in the tubular segment 19 of the attachment structure 18 against the upright part 23a of the top support 22 using a handle 27 . The clamping section 23 of the top support 22 further contains a floor plate 23b connected to the upright part 23a, with which the top support 22 can rest on the upper side 4 of the protruding edge 2 . The floor plate 23b is provided with first coupling parts in the form o f a hole in the floor plate 23b and a fastening nut . The support bracket 1 is configured such that a selection can be made between di f ferent attachment options .

[0034] A first option is shown in Fig . l . The support bracket 1 is placed over the protruding edge 2 whereby the edge 2 is clamped between the outer support 28 at the outer s ide 5 of the edge 2 and the adj ustable inner support 9 at the inner side of the edge . The edge is also clamped with the adj ustable top support 22 of the support bracket 1 with which the support bracket 1 rests on the upper side 4 of the edge 2 via the floor plate 23b of the clamping section 23 of the top support 22 . The floor plate 23b is also placed with the hole over a tension bar 25 with continuous thread which protrudes from the edge 2 at the upper side 4 and is further coupled using a ring nut 24 which is screwed on the part of the tension bar 25 protruding through the floor plate 23b .

[0035] A further attachment option consists of clamping the edge 2 with the top support 22 possibly in combination with the inner support 9 or the outer support 28 . Only clamping with the top support 22 is preferable because then both the inner side 3 and the outer side 5 of the edge 2 are accessible for works . The attachment option whereby the edge is clamped with the top support 22 in combination with the outer support 28 is shown in Fig . 2 . The support bracket 1 is placed over the protruding edge 2 whereby the edge 2 is only clamped between the outer support 28 at the outer side 5 of the edge 2 and the adj ustable top support 22 at the upper side 4 of the edge . The edge is not clamped with the adj ustable inner support 9 of the support bracket 1 such that the inner side 3 of the edge 2 is accessible for carrying out works .

[0036] Another attachment option is shown in Fig . 3 . The support bracket 1 is placed over the protruding edge 2 whereby the edge 2 is only clamped between the outer support 28 at the outer side 5 of the edge 2 and the adj ustable inner support 9 at the inner side 3 of the edge . The edge is not clamped nor coupled with the adj ustable top support 22 of the support bracket 1 , such that the upper side 4 of the edge 2 is accessible for carrying out works .

[0037] Figure 4 shows a safety rail . On the support bracket 1 , as also shown in Fig . l and described above , clamped on a protruding edge 2 , an upright support post 30 with rail support 31c is applied on a protruding part 29 of the base 13 . Said protruding part 29 with rail support 31b is attached to the base part 14 that is connected to the outer support 28 . Edge boarding 32 is provided on the rail supports 31a, b, c such that as such an ef fective temporary safety rail is created .

[0038] With reference to the characteristics of the support bracket 1 as shown in figures 1 to 4 , an embodiment of the method to apply a roo f covering on a roof with the protruding edge 2 comprises the steps as partially shown in figure 5 .

[0039] The legs 15 of the support brackets 1 are placed on either side 3 , 5 of the edge and subsequently the clamping section 10 of the inner support 9 is moved inwardly in the direction of the inner side 3 of the edge by tightening the rotary knob 12 until the support bracket 1 clamps the edge 2 between the inner support 9 and the outer support 28 .

[0040] The top support 22 is brought in the right position by sliding the attachment structure 18 over the base 13 . Subsequently, the attachment structure 18 is secured on the base by tightening the handle 21 .

[0041] The clamping section 23 of the top support 22 is lowered to the upper side 4 of the edge 2 with the hole in the floor plate 23a of the clamping section placed over the tension bar 25 which protrudes from the edge 2 at the upper side 4 . The floor plate 23a is af fixed with a ring nut 24 on the tension bar 25 . The support posts 30 are applied on the protruding parts 29 of the support brackets provided to that end . After applying the edge boarding 32 on the rail supports 31a, b, c, the edge is ef fectively protected .

[0042] Subsequently, the necessary works are carried out on the central section of the roof and roof covering 33 is applied hereon . I f the roof covering consi sts of a film or mat , for example EPDM, it is kept sufficiently long such that the part still to be applied in a later phase can cover the inner side 3 and the upper side of the edge . The aforementioned works are carried out with a safety rail whereby the support brackets 1 clamp the edge with all three the supports 9 , 22 , 28 . Alternatively the works can also be carried out with the other attachment options , i . e . only using the inner support 9 and the outer support 28 , or only using the top support 22 possibly in combination with the inner support 9 or the outer support 28 . When the roof covering is applied on the central section of the roof the clamping section 10 of the inner support is unscrewed such that the clamping section 10 no longer contacts the edge 2 at the inner side 3 . Subsequently, the pin that connects both L-shaped sections 16 , 17 is removed . Thus , the L-shaped section 16 that is connected to the inner support 9 can be removed from the other L-shaped section 17 such that the edge 2 is easily accessible at the inner side 3 . I f relevant , as shown in Fig . 5a, the removed L-shaped section 16 can be slid back into the other L- shaped section by rotating over an angle of 180 ° . In the latter case the rotated L-shaped section 16 with the inner support 9 does not form an obstruction for carrying out works on the inner side 3 of the edge 2 .

[0043] The roof covering 33 is further applied on the freed inner side 3 of the edge . Subsequently, as shown in Fig . 5B, the L-shaped section 16 with the inner support 9 is coupled with the other L-shaped section by rotating back 180 ° . The clamping section 10 of the inner support 9 is screwed against the inner side 3 of the edge , provided with roof covering 33 , such that the support bracket clamps the edge with the three supports 9 , 22 , 28 . Subsequently, the top support 22 is detached . This is done by uncoupling the floor plate 23b from the tension bar 25 by unscrewing and removing the ring nut 24 . Subsequently the upright part 23a of the clamping section 23 is sl id up through the tubular segment 19 of the attachment structure 18 and the upright part is af fixed using the handle 27 as shown in Fig . 5C . The edge is only still clamped between the inner support 9 and the outer support 28 . The upper side 4 of the edge is now accessible . On the upper side 4 , as shown in fig . 5D, a boarding plank 34 is applied such that the protruding part of the tension bar 25 is also covered . Then, as shown in fig . 5E , remaining roof covering 33 is placed on the boarding plank 34 such that the edge is ef fectively covered .

[0044] The present invention is by no means limited to the embodiments described as an example and shown in the figures , but a support bracket for attaching to a protruding edge to protect the edge from falls according to the invention can be realised in all kinds of forms and dimensions without departing from the scope of the invention .
