Description

[0001] An emptying system for an ostomy implant

[0002] The present disclosure relates to an emptying system for emptying of stomal waste from an ostomy implant, an emptying device, an adapter, and related methods.

[0003] Background

[0004] Ostomy surgery is a critical medical intervention performed on patients who have undergone procedures such as colostomy, ileostomy, or urostomy due to various medical conditions or surgical necessities. Ostomies involve the surgical creation of an opening, known as a stoma, on the abdomen, through which waste products are diverted to the outside of the body for collection in an ostomy pouch or bag.

[0005] Traditional ostomy pouch systems typically rely on attachment devices such as adhesive baseplates that adhere to the skin around the stoma to secure the ostomy pouch in place. These solutions often come with several issues, including skin irritation, leakage, difficulty achieving a reliable seal, and the need for frequent maintenance and replacement. Additionally, any spillage of intestinal content on the skin can cause rashes and severe skin problems. These challenges result in patients experiencing reduced confidence, diminished quality of life, and a limited ability to engage in daily activities without fear of complications.

[0006] For example, adhesive baseplates can sometimes fail to maintain a secure seal, leading to leaks. This compromises hygiene and skin health, causing discomfort. Leaks can occur due to the adhesive losing grip, poor adherence to moist or uneven skin, or body movements disrupting the seal.

[0007] Further, wearing adhesive baseplates for extended periods can be uncomfortable. The adhesive can irritate the skin, and the presence of the baseplate can feel intrusive. Activities like bending, stretching, or sleeping can exacerbate discomfort.

[0008] Additionally, baseplates do not prevent waste from reaching the area of the skin around the stoma, causing irritation. The acidic nature of stoma waste can damage the skin, necessitating the use of stoma barrier creams to mitigate this effect. However, these creams are not always fully effective and can be an additional nuisance for patients, requiring constant care and reapplication. Ostomy implants, as for example, disclosed in WO2014 / 140344 A1 , offer patients the ability to have a normal life, where they do not have to worry about the risk of complications such as leakages. The ostomy implant comprises a tubular interior section for implantation into a patient and an exterior section connected to the interior section, wherein a surface of the exterior section comprises a three-dimensional porous structure at an inner circumference that tissue can grow into, acting to prevent leakages and secure the implant.

[0009] By attaching the bowel segment to such an ostomy implant instead of the skin of the abdomen, patients are relieved from complications such as skin irritation and high risks of infections. Further, the implant can advantageously be used in connection with a lid, such that the ostomy implant is closed, preventing the discharge of stomal waste. This allows ostomy patients to be alleviated from the otherwise constant requirement of having ostomy pouches connected to collect stomal waste.

[0010] When the patient wants to discharge stomal waste, a pouch may be connected by adhering it to the stomach area around the ostomy implant, or directly to the lid, as disclosed in WO 2019 / 197291. In the disclosed system, when the patient wants to discharge stomal waste, an ostomy pouch is temporarily attached to the lid. Once attached, the patient must open a hatch of the lid, through the ostomy pouch, to discharge stomal waste into the ostomy pouch. Following the discharge of the stomal waste, the hatch is closed, and the ostomy pouch is removed from the implant and discarded.

[0011] While this system, comprising an ostomy implant and a lid, offers a means for a patient to control the discharge of stomal waste, the system is typically not able to withstand larger forces, and therefore cannot be used securely for longer time periods, such as while the patient is sleeping. Further, the operation of the lid can be difficult to use, as the patient has to control when stomal waste is discharged through the ostomy pouch.

[0012] Summary

[0013] Thus, there exists a need for a secure system for emptying of stomal waste from an ostomy implant that can be used for extended periods and is comfortable to use for the patient.

[0014] As disclosed herein, this can be achieved by an emptying system for emptying stomal waste from an ostomy implant, the emptying system comprising: • an emptying device comprising an ostomy pouch, the ostomy pouch having a first opening and an interior volume arranged to receive stomal waste through the first opening, the ostomy pouch further comprising, as an integral component, a connecting part; and

[0015] • an adapter for connecting the emptying device to the ostomy implant, the adapter comprising:

[0016] - a through-hole;

[0017] - at least one engaging unit arranged around the through-hole, the engaging unit being configured for sealing attachment to the ostomy implant; and

[0018] - a receiving structure for receiving the connecting part, and wherein the connecting part can be arranged in one or more positions comprising an open position wherein a sealed fluidic connection between the interior volume of the ostomy pouch and the through-hole of the adapter is formed.

[0019] Conventional ostomy pouches are not designed to form a sealed environment to an interior of the ostomy implant, but instead are provided as adhesive patches that have been adhered to the skin around the stoma, or alternatively to lids of ostomy implant, such as WO2019 / 197291. Contrary to this, the presently disclosed emptying system is arranged such that the emptying system is securely attached directly to the implant by an adapter.

[0020] In this way, the presently disclosed emptying system offers a secure attachment and seal to the implant that can be used for extended periods. This can, for example, enable the ostomy patient to securely use the emptying device during sleep.

[0021] As the emptying system is arranged to be attached directly to the implant, the length by which the emptying system protrudes from the patient can be minimized, for example, in comparison with systems that are arranged to be attached to ostomy lids. Thus, the presently disclosed emptying system is also comfortable to wear.

[0022] The emptying system may be arranged such that the adapter is, during use, attached to the implant and to the emptying device. The adapter may be reusable, while the ostomy pouch is typically for single use only. In alternative embodiments, the adapter may form an integral part of the emptying device, such as by being welded to the ostomy pouch of the emptying device. In such embodiments, the entire emptying device may be for single use only. In a further aspect, the present disclosure relates to an adapter configured for connecting an emptying device to an ostomy implant.

[0023] In yet a further aspect, the present disclosure relates to an emptying device configured for emptying of stomal waste from an ostomy implant, comprising an ostomy pouch having a first opening and an interior volume arranged to receive stomal waste through the first opening.

[0024] In another aspect, the present disclosure relates to a kit of parts comprising an adapter as disclosed herein and an emptying device as disclosed herein.

[0025] In a further aspect, the present disclosure relates to a method of manufacturing an emptying system, the method comprising providing an adapter; providing an emptying device; and assembling the adapter and the emptying device.

[0042] Detailed description

[0043] Percutaneous ostomy implants are known, as demonstrated in applicant’s earlier application WO 2014 / 140344. The implant disclosed therein comprises a tubular interior section, which is formed mainly of a mesh, and a circular, radially-extending anchoring flange or dermal anchor. The tubular interior section is attached to an exterior section, which, when the implant is implanted in a patient, protrudes from the patient’s body.

[0044] A groove around the exterior circumference of the exterior section of the implant allows a lid, bag, catheter, irrigation sleeve or other device to be attached to the implant. The implant is designed to be implanted in the subcutaneous tissue of the abdomen of a patient and to receive a bowel section through it. Nevertheless, other percutaneous ostomy implants are however known to the skilled person.

[0045] The ostomy implant may for example be arranged so that the patient’s ileum grows into a mesh structure of the implant, helping to secure the implant in place. Once implanted, and securely attached to the body, a lid as disclosed in WO 2019 / 197291 can be used to control the opening of the ostomy implant. This allows the patient’s bodily waste to be held in an internal reservoir until the lid is removed from the implant. The internal reservoir forms in the patient’s ileum after regular wearing of the lid has started.

[0046] The above-mentioned lid offers an easy means of opening and closing the ostomy implant, thereby facilitating the emptying of stomal waste. However, it does not allow for a secure connection with the ostomy pouch that can be used for a prolonged period and is comfortable for the patient. There is a need for an emptying system that addresses these drawbacks, providing solutions for the emptying of ostomy implants, which can be used securely for a prolonged period and are comfortable for the user.

[0047] Additionally, there is an unmet need for a system that allows for simple, secure, and quick attachment of ostomy pouches to an ostomy implant. Furthermore, the present disclosure solves the problem of providing a system for simple, secure, and efficient emptying of stomal waste. For example, the patient does not have to open and close a lid (as disclosed in WO 2019 / 197291) through the ostomy pouch, avoiding difficulties in controlling the state of the lid.

[0048] To overcome these drawbacks of the prior art, the present disclosure relates, In a first aspect, to an emptying system for emptying of stomal waste from an ostomy implant. The emptying system may comprise an emptying device as disclosed herein, and / or an adapter as disclosed herein. FIG. 1 shows an emptying system (1) according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The emptying system is arranged for emptying stomal waste from an ostomy implant, for example, the ostomy implant disclosed in WO 2014 / 140344 A1. The disclosed emptying system (1) may comprise an emptying device (2) and an adapter (7). The emptying device (2) may comprise an ostomy pouch (3) that is arranged for receiving stomal waste through a first opening (5). The ostomy pouch can have an interior volume (6) and is typically arranged to receive stomal waste into said interior volume (6) through the first opening (5).

[0049] The ostomy pouch (3) may, for example, be formed by two layers of a film material, typically a polymer film. The ostomy pouch (3) may be welded around the perimeter to form the interior volume. A skilled person knows other methods for forming an ostomy pouch with an interior volume (6).

[0050] The emptying device may comprise attachment points, such as hooks, loops, or holes, for attaching a girdle and / or a belt to ensure that the emptying device and / or the ostomy pouch is maintained in position. Such girdles or belts are known to a person within this technical field.

[0051] Further, the emptying pouch may comprise a gas release mechanism, which may also remove odors. The user may be able to selectively release gas from the ostomy pouch, or the ostomy pouch may be arranged to release gas when the pressure of the interior volume exceeds a pressure threshold.

[0052] The presently disclosed emptying system may further comprise an adapter (7) for connecting the emptying system (1) to an ostomy implant. Typically, the ostomy implant comprises a rounded opening that protrudes through the skin of the patient. The opening is typically, as mentioned above, connected to a bowel segment, such that the opening expels stomal waste. The adapter may hence be dimensioned to fit onto an ostomy implant. The adapter may, for example, have a rounded shape.

[0053] The adapter may have a through-hole (11). This through-hole may extend from a side of the adapter arranged to, during use, face the emptying pouch (3) to a side of the adapter (7) arranged to face the patient and / or the implant. The adapter may comprise a first part (8), a second part (9), and at least one first engaging unit (10), arranged around a through-hole (11) of the adapter (7). The through-hole is typically fluidically connected with the first opening (5) of the ostomy pouch (3). The emptying system (1) is typically arranged so that, in use, when the emptying system (1) is attached to the ostomy implant, stomal waste is discharged from the ostomy implant to the interior volume of the emptying device.

[0054] The emptying system may be arranged so that the stomal waste is discharged via the through-hole (11) to the first opening (5). In specific examples, the emptying device may comprise a connecting part (24) extending across at least a part of the adapter (7), such as across a part, or the entirety, of the through-hole (11) of the adapter (7).

[0055] Thus, the emptying system (1) may be arranged so that, in use, when attached to the implant, the adapter (7) and / or the emptying device (2) is in direct contact with the ostomy implant. The emptying system may be arranged such that, in use, rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9) attaches the emptying system (1) to the implant. The attachment of the emptying system or the adapter can, however, be done in other ways, as disclosed elsewhere herein. Thus, the present disclosure is not necessarily limited to an adapter that is arranged such that, in use, rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9) attaches the emptying system (1) to the implant.

[0056] The adapter may, for example, be arranged so that rotation of the first part with respect to the second part, in a first direction (17), attaches the emptying system (1) to the implant. The adapter may be arranged so that rotation of the first part with respect to the second part, in a second direction (18), detaches the emptying system (1) from the implant.

[0057] Thus, the adapter (7) may be so arranged as to allow for attachment or detachment of the emptying system from the ostomy implant, depending on the direction of the relative rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9). It should be noted that rotation of the first part with respect to the second part is equivalent to the rotation of the second part with respect to the first part, as it is the relative rotation between these two parts that results in an actuation of the adapter (7), such as an attachment to the implant or a detachment from the implant. While the direction of rotation is not the same when considering rotation of the first part with respect to the second part or rotation of the second part with respect to the first part, this is not important to the presently disclosed emptying system, as the exact direction of rotation for attachment or detachment is not crucial, as long as the first direction (17) and the second direction (18) are opposite directions. The first direction (17) may be considered clockwise (or counter-clockwise) and the second direction (18) may be considered counter-clockwise (or clockwise), seen from the patient side of the emptying system (1) during use.

[0058] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the first part (8), the second part (9), and the at least one first engaging unit (10) are arranged such that, in use, rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), such as in a first direction (17), moves the at least one first engaging unit (10) from a disengaged position, wherein the emptying system (1) is not attached to the implant (4), to an engaged position, wherein the emptying system (1) is attached to the implant (4).

[0059] Alternatively or additionally, the first part (8), the second part (9), and the at least one first engaging unit (10) are arranged such that, in use, rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), such as in a second direction (18), moves the at least one first engaging unit (10) from an engaged position, wherein the emptying system (1) is attached to the implant (4), to a disengaged position, wherein the emptying system (1) is not attached to the implant (4).

[0060] Thus, the adapter (7) may be arranged so that the ostomy implant is engaged when rotating the first part with respect to the second part in a first direction and disengaged when rotating the first part with respect to the second part in a second direction that is opposite to the first direction.

[0061] However, the adapter may alternatively be arranged to be attached to the ostomy implant by various other mechanisms, such as snap-fit mechanisms, latch and hook systems, magnetic attachments, threaded connections, compression fittings, adhesive bonding, clamps or cuffs, hook-and-loop fasteners, bayonet fittings, or quick-release buckles. These alternatives ensure that the adapter can securely attach to the ostomy implant using various attachment methods. Thus, an adapter comprising a first part and a second part that can be rotated with respect to each other, resulting in attachment of the adapter to the ostomy implant, is merely an embodiment of the present disclosure. The adapter may be arranged to be attached to the ostomy implant by alternative mechanisms, as described herein.

[0062] The ostomy pouch (3) may be provided with tearing marks (45), such that a user can tear off a distal portion of the ostomy pouch (3) and form a second opening for discharging the stomal waste from the ostomy pouch (3), such as from the interior volume (6) of the ostomy pouch (3). Alternatively, or additionally, the ostomy pouch may be provided with a second opening that may be opened and closed, such as resealable. Such ostomy bags are known to a person within this technical field.

[0063] FIG. 2 shows a cutaway schematic illustration of an adapter (7) according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The adapter (7) may be arranged to attach the emptying system (1) to the ostomy implant (4). The adapter (7) may be arranged according to FIG. 2A wherein the adapter (7) comprises a first part (8), a second part (9) and a first engaging unit (10). The adapter may be arranged so as to allow for rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), in a first direction (17) whereby the adapter attaches the adapter and / or the emptying system to the implant (4).

[0064] The attachment may be facilitated by having the first part and / or the second part comprising a first engaging unit (10) that is arranged to engage with the implant (4). FIG. 2A shows the second part comprising a first engaging unit (10) that is arranged to engage with the implant (4), so as to attach the adapter and / or the emptying system to the implant (4).

[0065] The first part (8) and the second part (9) are typically arranged around a through-hole (11) of the adapter (7). Said through-hole (11) may be arranged so as to accommodate an exterior part (outside the patient) of the implant, such as at least a part of the implant comprising an exterior opening.

[0066] The second part (9) may comprise one or more first engaging units (10) that are arranged for engaging with a corresponding receiving part (14) of the ostomy implant (4). For example the first engaging units (10) may be arranged so as to move inwardly (e.g. towards the center of the through-hole (11)), such that the engaging units engages the corresponding receiving part(s) (14) of the ostomy implant (4). In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the emptying system comprises: an emptying device comprising an ostomy pouch, the ostomy pouch having a first opening and an interior volume arranged to receive stomal waste through the first opening; and an adapter for connecting the emptying device to the ostomy implant, the adapter comprising a first part, a second part, and at least one first engaging unit, arranged around a through-hole of the adapter; wherein the emptying system is arranged such that, in use, rotation of the first part with respect to the second part attaches the emptying system to the implant.

[0067] In the shown example of FIG. 2A, the first part (8) comprises an actuator (15) that is arranged to apply a force onto the first engaging unit (10), upon rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9). The first engaging unit (10) may be a resilient member that moves upon application of said force by the first part (8). For example, the first engaging unit (10) may be bent, twisted and / or turned, such that it can engage with the receiving part (14) of the ostomy implant (4). While not shown in FIG. 2A, it should be noted that the adapter (7) may be arranged so that the first part (8) is drawn downwards with respect to the second part (9), such as wherein the first part is drawn in an axial direction of the through-hole (11), towards the patient side of the adapter (7), upon rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), such that the adapter (7), in use, attaches to the ostomy implant (4). In this way, a sealing element (16) may be arranged to form a seal against a part of the ostomy implant (4), such as a part facing away from the patient, in the axial direction of the ostomy implant (4).

[0068] FIGS. 2B-C show another cutaway schematic illustration of an adapter (7) arranged for attaching to an ostomy implant (4). The adapter (7) may be arranged according to FIG. 2B wherein the adapter (7) comprises a first part (8), a second part (9) and a first engaging unit (10). The adapter may be arranged so as to allow for rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), in a first direction (17) whereby the adapter attaches the adapter and / or the emptying system to the implant (4).

[0069] FIG. 2B shows the first engaging unit (10) in a disengaged position, wherein the adapter (7) is not attached to the implant (4). Upon rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), the first part (8) is drawn downwardly, in an axial direction (19) of the adapter and / or the implant. FIG. 2C shows the adapter (7) after said rotation whereby the first part has been axially moved with respect to the second part. Typically, the axial movement is in a direction perpendicular to the radial plane of the adapter (7) and / or implant (4).

[0070] The first part (8) may comprise a sealing element (16), that upon said axial movement of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9) forms a seal to the ostomy implant (4). The seal may be arranged to prevent leakages in the connection between the ostomy implant and the emptying system (1).

[0071] As mentioned above, the attachment of the emptying system (1), such as the adapter (7) to the implant (4) may be facilitated by having the first part and / or the second part comprising a first engaging unit (10) that is arranged to engage with the implant (4).

[0072] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the second part (9) comprises the at least one first engaging unit (10). In specific examples, the second part (9) comprises a plurality of first engaging units (10). Each first engaging unit (10) is arranged so as to engage with the implant (4) upon rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9). Typically, the first engaging units (10) are arranged in a symmetrical pattern around the through-hole (11) of the adapter (4). For example, the adapter (4) may comprise one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine or ten first engaging units (10).

[0073] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the at least one first engaging unit(s) (10) is arranged for engaging with a corresponding receiving part (14) provided on the implant (4).

[0074] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the first part comprises at least one actuator, arranged for moving the at least one first engaging unit from a disengaged position to an engaged position, and / or from a engaged position to a disengaged position, upon rotation of the first part relative to the second part.

[0075] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, each first engaging unit is actuated, such as radially moved, by a respective actuator.

[0076] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the first engaging unit is arranged to be moved inwardly, such as radially inwardly, and / or upwardly, such as axially in a direction away from the patient side of the adapter, such as to attach and / or seal the emptying device to the implant, when being moved from the disengaged position to the engaged position, such as upon rotation of the first part relative to the second part in a first direction.

[0077] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the first and second parts are arranged such that as the first part is rotated relative to the second part, the first part is made to move axially with respect to the second part, such as to form a seal by a sealing element of the first part.

[0078] By having the first engaging unit(s) arranged to move inwardly, such as radially inwardly, and upwardly, such as axially in a direction away from the patient side of the adapter, the adapter may be attached and sealed to the implant by a single movement (e.g. rotation of the first part with respect to the second part). By having the first engaging unit(s) arranged to be moved upwardly, they may apply a force onto the implant such that the adapter is pushed in the opposite direction. By having a sealing element arranged to contact a surface of the implant facing away from the patient in the axial direction of the implant, i.e. as shown in FIG. 2B-C, the force applied onto the adapter, may result in a compression of the sealing element such that a seal is formed between the adapter and the implant.

[0079] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the first engaging unit is arranged to be moved outwardly, such as radially outwardly, and / or downwardly, such as toward the patient in an axial direction of the adapter and / or implant, such as to detach and / or release a seal between the emptying device and the implant, when being moved from the engaged position to the disengaged position, such as upon rotation of the first part relative to the second part in a second direction. By having the first engaging unit(s) arranged to be moved downwardly upon rotation of the first part with respect to the second part, the first engaging unit(s) may remove a force applied onto the implant such that the adapter is not in a stressed configuration, and the seal between the adapter and the implant may be released, i.e. going from the arrangement shown in FIG. 20 to that shown in FIG. 2B.

[0080] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the adapter is an integral part of the emptying device, such as adhered and / or welded to the emptying device. In other examples of the present disclosure, the adapter is provided as a separate part, and arranged for attaching to the emptying device and to the implant. Thus, when the adapter is provided as a separate part, the adapter may be arranged to attach to the implant and / or to the emptying device upon rotation of the first part with respect to the second part. Alternatively, or additionally, the adapter may be arranged so as to be attached to the emptying device by a separate mechanism, for example, through connection between a connecting part of the emptying device to the adapter. For example, the emptying device may be arranged to be slidably attached to the adapter. Alternatively, the emptying device may be arranged to be attached to the adapter by a snap-fit mechanism, a lever part that locks the emptying device in position, and / or a screwing mechanism.

[0081] FIG. 3 shows a schematic illustration of a cross section of an emptying system (1) according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In the example shown, the emptying system (1) comprises an emptying device (2) wherein the adapter (7) does not form an integral part of the emptying device (2). Instead, the adapter (7) is provided as a separate part that is arranged to selectively form attachment to the emptying device, such as when a user attaches the emptying device (2) to the adapter (7).

[0082] FIG. 3A shows an ostomy implant (4) and an emptying system (1) comprising an adapter (7) and an emptying device (2) comprising an ostomy pouch (3). The adapter may be provided with a sealing element (16), such as a sealing ring, in order to form a seal with the ostomy implant when attached. For example, this sealing element (16) may be provided in contact with a first part (8) of the adapter. The sealing element (16) may be arranged to form a seal when the first part is pushed down onto the ostomy implant (4), such as in the axial direction of the implant (4), towards the patient side of the implant (4).

[0083] To attach the emptying system (1) to the ostomy implant (4), the ostomy pouch (3) may be drawn over an exterior part of the implant (4). Typically, the ostomy pouch (3) is at least drawn over the exterior part of the implant so that the ostomy pouch (3) covers a receiving part (14) of the ostomy implant, wherein this receiving part (14) is typically arranged to engage with the at least one first engaging unit (10) of the adapter (7).

[0084] The adapter (7) may be provided with the ostomy pouch (3) extending through the through-hole (11). Alternatively, the user may draw the ostomy pouch (3) through the through-hole (11). The adapter (7) is thereafter drawn over the exterior part of the ostomy implant (4), as shown in FIG. 2B. In this position, the adapter has been moved towards the patient side of the implant. Preferably, the patient side of the adapter is sufficiently large in order to accommodate the exterior part of the ostomy implant (4), while the through-hole is made slightly smaller by one or more flanges (40) extending inwardly, which may effectively decrease the diameter of the through-hole. The flanges (40) prevent the adapter from further movement in the axial direction.

[0085] Upon rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9) of the adapter (4), the engaging units (10) engage the ostomy implant (4). As shown, the engaging units may extend inwardly, towards the center of the through-hole (11), and may additionally or alternatively extend in an axial direction away from the patient side of the implant, such as upwardly. The first engaging units (10) may further engage with receiving parts (14) of the implant (4). The first engaging units (10) may, each, for example, extend into a receiving part (14), over a receiving part(14), through a receiving part(14), and / or around a receiving part(14). The one or more first engaging units (10) may be arranged so as to apply a force onto the implant, for example in the axial direction away from the patient side, thereby pushing the adapter in the opposite axial direction, such as in the axial direction towards the patient side of the implant (4). In case the adapter (7) is provided with one or more sealing elements (16) provided in connection with the flanges (40), such as on a patient side of the flanges (40), they may provide a seal towards a lip region of the exterior part of the ostomy implant (4).

[0086] In an alternative embodiment, the adapter may be attached to the ostomy implant using a snap-fit mechanism, where the engaging units (10) snap into place upon contact with the receiving parts (14) of the implant (4). This mechanism provides a secure fit without the need for rotational movement. Another embodiment may employ a latch and hook system, wherein the adapter hooks onto the implant and is latched securely, preventing any axial movement.

[0087] Furthermore, the adapter can also be designed with magnetic attachments, where magnetic forces ensure a strong and secure connection between the adapter and the ostomy implant. This method can provide ease of attachment and detachment, especially for users with limited manual dexterity. Threaded connections can also be used, where the adapter screws onto the implant, ensuring a tight and leak-proof fit.

[0088] FIG. 4 shows a schematic illustration of an emptying system (1) according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The adapter (7) is here shown as a part that is arranged to be selectively attached to the emptying device, such as wherein the adapter is not an integral part of the emptying device (2). In use, in order to connect the emptying system (1) to the implant (4), the emptying system (1) of the present example is arranged such that the emptying device (2) is to be connected to the adapter (7) and the adapter (7) to be connected to the ostomy implant (4). Upon forming said connections, the emptying system (1) attaches to the implant (4). The adapter (4) may be arranged such that, upon rotating the first part (8) of the adapter (7) with respect to the second part (9) of the adapter (7), such as in a first direction (17), the emptying device (2) may be attached to the adapter, and the adapter (7) may be attached to the implant (4). Thus, the same movement may result in attachment of both the emptying device (2) to the adapter, and the adapter (7) to the ostomy implant (4).

[0089] This attachment may be achieved in different ways. The adapter, may for example comprise one or more first engaging units that are arranged to attach the emptying pouch to the adapter and / or the adapter to the ostomy implant. Additionally or alternatively, the adapter may comprise one or more second engaging units that are arranged to attach the emptying pouch to the adapter and / or the adapter to the ostomy implant. Thus, for example, the first engaging units may be arranged to attach the emptying device to the adapter while the second engaging units may be arranged to attach the adapter to the ostomy implant.

[0090] In the example shown in FIG. 4, the emptying device comprises a connecting part (24). The connecting part comprises a first end that is arranged around the first opening (5) of the emptying device (2), and a second end (26) on the opposite side of the connecting part (24). The connecting part (24) is arranged such that it extends away from the first opening (5). The connecting part may have any shape, including varying cross sections. The example shows a tubular connecting part (24). The connecting part is arranged to engage with the adapter (7) by insertion of at least a part of the connecting part (24) into a receiving structure (30) of the adapter (7), for example a recess part. Thus, the tubular connecting part may for example be slid into a part of the adapter. The recess part may be a recess provided on the pouch side (42) of the adapter (7) and arranged to receive at least a part of the connecting part (24). The recess part may be concentric with the first part (8) and the second part (9), and may further be arranged to be concentric with at least a part of an exterior part of the ostomy implant (4) during use.

[0091] Upon insertion of the connecting part (24) into the receiving structure (30), the relative orientation of the emptying device and the adapter may be restricted in order to ensure correct engagement between the two, such as to ensure that the ostomy pouch, in use, extends downwardly, such as in the gravitational direction. The connecting part (24) may comprise a first angular restriction part (27). The adapter may alternatively, or additional, comprise a second angular restriction part (28). The first, or the second, angular restriction part (27) may, for example, be a slit, a protrusion, an extension, and / or a recess that is arranged for engaging with the corresponding second angular restriction part (28) of the adapter. In the example shown, the first angular restriction part (27) is a recess that is arranged to engage with a corresponding second angular restriction part (28) in the form of a protrusion.

[0092] Thus, the connecting part (24) can be arranged for being coaxial with the adapter, and wherein the connecting part comprises a first angular restriction part that is arranged to engage with a corresponding second angular restriction part, wherein said parts are arranged such that they can only engage at one or more specific relative rotation angles.

[0093] The first angular restriction part (27) may for example be a slit, a protrusion, an extension, and / or a recess, that is arranged for engaging with the corresponding second angular restriction part (28) of the adapter. In the example shown, the first angular restriction part (27) is a recess that is arranged to engage with a corresponding second angular restriction part (28) in the form of a protrusion.

[0094] Following insertion of the connecting part (24) into the adapter (7), the first part (8) may be rotated with respect to the second part (9). The user may hold on to a holding part (32), that may for example be provided on the patent side (32) of the adapter (7). The holding part (32) may or may not form a part of the first or the second part. While holding the holding part (32), the user rotates the first part (8) or the second part (9) resulting in a rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9).

[0095] The first part (8), the second part (9) and the at least one first engaging unit (10) are arranged such that, in use, rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), such as in a first direction (17), moves the at least one first engaging unit (10) from a disengaged position, wherein the emptying system (1) is not attached to the implant (4) , to an engaged position, wherein the emptying system (1) is attached to the implant (4).

[0096] Alternatively, the first part (8), the second part (9) and the at least one first engaging unit (10) are arranged such that, in use, rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), such as in a first direction (17), moves the at least one first engaging unit (10) from a disengaged position, wherein the adapter (7) is not attached to the implant (4) , to an engaged position, wherein the emptying system (7) is attached to the implant (4), and moves the at least one a second engaging unit (20) from a disengaged position, wherein the adapter (7) is not attached to the emptying device (2), to an engaged position, wherein the adapter (7) is attached to the emptying device (2).

[0097] Following attachment of the emptying system (1) to the ostomy implant (4), the emptying system (1) is arranged such that stomal waste may be discharged from the ostomy implant (4) to the interior volume (6) of the ostomy pouch (3).

[0098] Similar to other embodiments disclosed herein, the example shown in Fig 4 is arranged such that the first part (8) is concentric with the second part (9). The adapter (7) may be arranged such that, in use, the through-hole (11) is arranged around an exterior part of the ostomy implant (4), such that an opening of the exterior part of the ostomy implant (4) is fluidically connected with the first opening (5) of the ostomy pouch (3). The opening of the exterior part of the ostomy implant (4) may be fluidically connected with the first opening (5) through the adapter (7) and / or the connecting part (24) of the emptying device (2).

[0099] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the emptying system is arranged such that, in use, when the emptying system is attached to the implant, the ostomy implant, the first part, and the second part are concentric. For emptying devices that comprise a connecting part, the implant, the ostomy implant, the first part, the second part, and the connecting part of the emptying device may be concentric.

[0100] In another embodiment, the emptying system (1) is arranged such that, when the emptying device (2) is attached to the ostomy implant (4), the ostomy implant (4) and the connecting part (24) are concentric, and the first and second parts are arranged around and / or between the ostomy implant and / or the connecting part (24).

[0101] In alternative embodiments, the adapter may be attached to the ostomy implant using different mechanisms such as snap-fit mechanisms, latch and hook systems, magnetic attachments, threaded connections, compression fittings, adhesive bonding, clamps or cuffs, hook-and-loop fasteners, bayonet fittings, or quick-release buckles. These alternatives provide various ways to ensure a secure and reliable attachment of the adapter to the ostomy implant.

[0102] FIGS. 5A-B show a schematic illustration of a cross section of the adapter according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0103] FIG. 5A shows an example of an adapter (7) comprising a first part (8) and a second part (9), wherein a connecting part (24) of an emptying device (2) has been introduced into the adapter (7), and wherein an exterior part of an ostomy implant (4) has been made to extend through at least a part of the through-hole (11) of the adapter (7). The exterior part of the ostomy implant (4) comprising an implant opening (47), that is typically attached to a bowel segment, such as to discharge stomal waste.

[0104] The second part (9) of the present example comprises four first engaging units (10) that are arranged to engage with a corresponding receiving part (14) of the ostomy implant (4) upon attachment. Further, the second part (9) of the presently disclosed embodiment comprises four second engaging units (20). The adapter (7) is arranged such that, in use, rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), such as in a first direction (17), moves the first engaging units (10) from a disengaged position, wherein the adapter (7) is not attached to the implant (4), to an engaged position, wherein the adapter (7) is attached to the implant (4).

[0105] The adapter (7) is further arranged such that, in use, rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), such as in a first direction (17), moves the second engaging units (20) from a disengaged position, wherein the adapter (7) is not attached to the emptying device (2), to an engaged position, wherein the adapter (7) is attached to the emptying device (2), such as to a connecting part of the emptying device (2).

[0106] As seen in FIGs. 5A-B, the first part (8) may comprise a first engaging unit (10) and a second engaging unit (20). The first engaging unit (10) may be arranged to move inwardly, such as radially inwardly, and / or upwardly such as in an axial direction towards the pouch side of the adapter, upon rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), such as in a first direction (17). The first engaging unit (10) may in this way be arranged to engage, such as attach, the implant (4). The adapter (7) may be arranged such that the rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9) in a second direction (18) that may be opposite to the first direction (17) instead disengages, such as detaches the first engaging unit (10) from the implant (4). The second engaging unit (20) may be arranged to move outwardly, such as radially outwardly, and / or upwardly such as in an axial direction towards the pouch side of the adapter, upon rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), such as in a first direction (17). The second engaging unit (20) may in this way be arranged to engage, such as attach, the emptying device (2). The adapter (7) may be arranged such that the rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9) in a second direction (18) that may be opposite to the first direction (17) instead disengages, such as detaches the second engaging unit (20) from the emptying device (2).

[0107] In an alternative embodiment, the second engaging unit (20) may be arranged outwardly, such as radially outwardly of the emptying device (2), such as the connecting part (24) of the emptying device (2). In such an example, the second engaging unit (20) may instead be arranged to move radially inwardly when engaging with the emptying device (2).

[0108] Thus, the second engaging unit (20) may be arranged to move inwardly, such as radially inwardly, and / or upwardly such as in a axial direction towards the pouch side of the adapter, upon rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), such as in a first direction (17).

[0109] The adapter (7) may for example be arranged such that the first part (8) is rotated a predetermined angle with respect to the second part (9), for example in a first direction (17), whereby the first engaging unit (10) attaches the adapter (7) to the ostomy implant (4). The adapter (7) may be arranged to provide user feedback, such as tactile, haptic, audible, and / or visual feedback, indicating when the first engaging unit (10) is moved to its engaged position (i.e. attached to the implant (4)). The user may thereafter rotate the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9) a second predetermined angle, in the same direction, whereby the second engaging unit (20) attaches the adapter (7) to the emptying device (2), such as the connecting part (24) of the emptying device (2). A second user feedback, such as a tactile, haptic, audible, and / or visual feedback, may be provided when the second engaging unit (20) is moved to its engaged position. The same process, but in reverse, may be carried out in order to release the emptying device (2), and thereafter, the implant (4) from the adapter (7).

[0110] The at least one first engaging unit (10) and the at least one second engaging unit (20) may be arranged to be moved by one or more actuators (15). The adapter (7) may for example be arranged such that each first engaging unit (10) and each second engaging unit (20) is moved between its engaged position and / or its disengaged position by a separate actuator (15). Alternatively, multiple first engaging units (10) may be moved between their disengaged position and their engaged position by a single actuator (15) and / or multiple first engaging units (10) may be moved between their disengaged position and their engaged position by a single actuator.

[0111] As shown in FIGs. 5A-B, each actuator (15) is arranged to move a pair comprising a first engaging unit (10) and second engaging unit (20) between their disengaged position, as shown in FIG. 5A, and their engaged position, as shown in FIG. 5B. The actuators (15) are each provided as a part of the first part (8), while the first engaging units (10) and the second engaging units (20) are provided as a part of the second part (9). Thereby, upon rotation of the first part (8), with respect to the second part (9), the actuator (15) applies a force onto the first engaging unit (10) and the second engaging unit (20) whereby the adapter (7) attaches to the implant (4) and the emptying device (2) respectively. Depending on the size and shape of the actuators (15), the first engaging units (10) and the second engaging units (20), it is possible to control whether attachment of the adapter (7) to the ostomy implant (4) occurs before, simultaneous or after, attachment of the adapter (7) to the emptying device (2). This is irrespective of the direction by which the first engaging unit (10) and the second engaging unit (20) are arranged to move in order to engage with the ostomy implant (4) and the emptying device (2). The direction may be the same or the opposite, and it is still possible to control, as mentioned above, which part the adapter (7) attaches to first, or whether the adapter (7) is arranged to attach to the ostomy implant (4) and the emptying device (2) simultaneously.

[0112] When the adapter is in its disengaged position, as shown in FIG. 5A, the first part (8) may be rotated with respect to the second part (9), in a first direction (17) of rotation. At the same time, the first part (8) may be prevented from rotation in a second direction (18) with respect to the second part (9). In the example shown in FIG. 5A, the first part (8) comprises four actuators (15). Each actuator (15) is arranged to move a first engaging unit (10) and a second engaging unit (20) between their disengaged position (as shown in FIG. 5A), and their engaged position (as shown in FIG. 5B), and / or from their disengaged position to the engaged position.

[0113] The first part (8) may comprise the actuators (15), and the second part (9) may comprise the first engaging units (10) and the second engaging units (20). The actuators (15) and the second part (9) may be so arranged that rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), in a first direction (17) is prevented when the first engaging unit (10) and / or the second engaging unit (20) is in the engaged position. This may be achieved by having the adapter (7) arranged so as to prevent further relative rotation between the first part (8) and the second part (9). For example, the actuator (15) may comprise an actuating end (48) that is arranged to engage with a corresponding part of the first engaging unit (10) and / or the second engaging unit (20). The actuating end (48) of the actuator (15) may for example be sized and shaped substantially the same as a corresponding section (49) of the first part (8), wherein the actuator (15) may be pushed into, upon rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9). The actuating end (48) may be arranged so as to apply a force onto the first engaging unit (10) and / or the second engaging unit (20) when the actuating end (48) is pushed into the corresponding section (49), thus the actuating end may be slightly larger and / or have a slightly different shape, so as to be arranged to apply said force onto the first engaging unit (10) and / or the second engaging unit (20) upon rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9).

[0114] While FIG. 5 shows an adapter (7) arranged so that the first part (8), e.g. the actuator (15), engages with the second part (9), e.g. the first engaging unit (10) and the second engaging unit (20), in the same plane and result in the first engaging unit (10) being pushed inwardly, such as radially inwardly, and the second engaging unit (20) being pushed outwardly, such as radially outwardly, other arrangements may be realized with the same or a similar effect.

[0115] In an alternative embodiment, the second engaging unit (20) may be arranged outwardly, such as radially outwardly of the emptying device (2), such as the connecting part (24) of the emptying device (2). In such an example, the second engaging unit (20) may instead be arranged to move radially inwardly when engaging with the emptying device (2).

[0116] The adapter (7) may also be arranged with alternative mechanisms for attachment to the ostomy implant (4) and the emptying device (2). These mechanisms can include snap-fit mechanisms, latch and hook systems, magnetic attachments, threaded connections, compression fittings, adhesive bonding, clamps or cuffs, hook-and-loop fasteners, bayonet fittings, or quick-release buckles. These alternatives provide various ways to ensure a secure and reliable attachment of the adapter to the ostomy implant and the emptying device.

[0117] The first engaging unit (10) and the second engaging unit (20) may be actuated by the same actuators (15), for example pair-wise as shown in FIG. 5, or different actuators (15), for example one or more actuators (15) for one or more first engaging units (10), and one or more different actuators (15) for one or more second engaging units (20).

[0118] The first part (8) and the second part (9) may also be arranged so as to apply a force onto the first engaging unit (10) and the second engaging unit (20) that is inwardly, such as radially inwardly. Thus, while FIG. 5A shows an example wherein forces are applied to first engaging unit (10) to and the second engaging unit (20) that are in the opposite direction, i.e. radially inwardly and radially outwardly, the adapter (7) may instead be arranged so as to apply forces onto said first engaging unit (10) and said second engaging unit (20) that are in the same (radial) direction, i.e. inwardly.

[0119] This may be advantageous as the forces applied to the first engaging unit (10) and the second engaging unit (20) by one or more actuators (15) may be added up, so that the connection is made more secure.

[0120] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the adapter (7) is arranged so as to move the first engaging unit (10) and the second engaging unit (20) between their engaged positions and the disengaged positions at different degrees of rotation between the first part (8) and the second part (9). This may be advantageous, as it allows for, upon an initial rotation between the first part (8) and the second part (9), for example in a first direction (17), engaging the ostomy implant (4) by the first engaging unit (10), thus attaching the adapter (7) to the ostomy implant (4). Upon further rotation in the same first direction (17), the same or different actuator(s) (15) may be arranged to apply a force onto one or more second engaging units (20), which engages the emptying device (2), such as the connecting part (24) of the emptying device (2), or the ostomy pouch, thereby attaching the adapter (7) also to the emptying device (4).

[0121] This may be advantageous as the forces applied to the first engaging unit (10) and the second engaging unit (20) by one or more actuators (15) may be combined, ensuring a more secure connection.

[0122] In one embodiment of the present disclosure, the adapter (7) is arranged so as to move the first engaging unit (10) and the second engaging unit (20) between their engaged positions and the disengaged positions at different degrees of rotation between the first part (8) and the second part (9).

[0123] Thus, attachment of the adapter (7) to the ostomy implant (4) and to the emptying device may be carried out in two subsequent steps, wherein the adapter (7) is initially attached to the emptying device (2) or to the ostomy implant (4), and upon further rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), the adapter (7) will be attached to both the emptying device (2) and the ostomy implant (4).

[0124] The actuation end (48) may be arranged so as to actuate the first engaging unit (10) and / or the second engaging unit (20) by, upon being rotated into the corresponding section (49), applying a force on the first engaging unit (10) and / or the second engaging unit (20). Thus, while the actuator (15) may be shaped and sized substantially the same as the corresponding section (49) of the first part (8), it may be larger and / or of a different shape. Alternatively, or additionally, the actuating end (48) may be wedge-shaped, while the corresponding section of the first part has a corresponding shape. In this way, the actuator may apply a force onto the first engaging unit (10) and / or the second engaging unit (20) such that the first engaging unit (10) and / or the second engaging unit (20) is moved from the disengaged position (FIG. 5A) to the engaged position (FIG. 5B). The actuation end (48) may be arranged so as to actuate the first engaging unit (10) and / or the second engaging unit (20) by, upon being rotated into the corresponding section (49), applying a force on the first engaging unit (10) and / or the second engaging unit (20). 5B).

[0125] FIG. 6 shows a perspective view of a similar adapter (7) as shown in FIG. 5. FIG. 6A shows the adapter (7) without the outermost layer, which is shown in FIG. 6B. The first part (8) is arranged to rotate with respect to the second part (9). FIG. 6B further shows the recess structure (30) that may be arranged to receive a part of the emptying device (2), such as the connecting part (24).

[0126] The adapter (7) may further comprise a holding part (32) that may be arranged so that the first part (8) or the second part (9) remains stationary while the other part is rotated. For example, the holding part (32) may be arranged to prevent rotation of the first part (8), while the user rotates the second part (9) with respect to the first part (8). Alternatively, the holding part (32) may be arranged to prevent rotation of the second part (9), while the user rotates the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9). The holding part may, for example, be an integral part of the first or the second part, or may comprise means for preventing rotation of the first part (8) or the second part (9).

[0127] In another embodiment, the adapter (7) may include locking mechanisms to secure the first part (8) and the second part (9) in place once they have been rotated to the desired position. This can ensure that the adapter remains securely attached to the ostomy implant (4) and the emptying device (2) during use.

[0128] Additionally, the adapter (7) may be designed with ergonomic features on the holding part (32) to provide better grip and ease of use for patients, especially those with limited dexterity. This can include textured surfaces or extended handles. The adapter (7) may also be arranged to include visual indicators or markings that align when the adapter is properly attached to both the ostomy implant (4) and the emptying device (2). These indicators can help users ensure that the device is securely connected.

[0129] Alternative embodiments may incorporate different attachment mechanisms, such as snap-fit, magnetic coupling, or threaded connections, to provide secure and reliable attachment between the adapter (7), the ostomy implant (4), and the emptying device (2). These mechanisms offer versatility in design and can cater to various user preferences and needs.

[0130] For example, a magnetic coupling mechanism could be used where magnetic forces ensure a secure connection between the adapter (7) and the ostomy implant (4). This method can provide ease of attachment and detachment, particularly beneficial for users with limited manual dexterity.

[0131] Threaded connections can be another alternative, where the adapter (7) screws onto the ostomy implant (4), ensuring a tight and leak-proof fit. This method can provide a secure and durable attachment suitable for long-term use.

[0132] FIG. 7 shows an adapter (7) for connecting the emptying device to the ostomy implant according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The adapter (7) comprises a first part (8), a second part (9), and six first engaging units (10), arranged around a through-hole (11) of the adapter (7).

[0133] The second part (9) comprises six first engaging units (10) that are arranged to be moved between a disengaged position (FIG. 7A-B), and an engaged position (FIG. 7E- F), upon rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), in a first direction (17).

[0134] FIG. 7A shows a partial cross-section of the adapter (7) along the cut line shown in FIG. 7B. Both FIGs. 7A-B show the adapter (7) in a disengaged position. In the disengaged position, the first part (8) has been rotated with respect to the second part (9) in a second direction (18). From FIG. 7B, it can be seen how the first part (8) of the adapter (7) applies a force onto the first engaging units (10). The first part may be taken as an actuator (15), as it applies a force onto the first engaging unit (10) to move its position. The first engaging unit (10), and / or the second engaging unit (20) may be a resilient member which moves, such as bends, rotates, and / or twists, upon application of said force. The force moves the first engaging units (10) in an outward direction, such as radially outward, away from the axial center of the through-hole (11). This makes the first engaging units (10) disengage, such as detach, from the receiving part (14) of the ostomy implant (4).

[0135] Upon rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), the first engaging unit (10) of the second part (9) is moved radially inward (FIG. 7C-D). Upon further movement in the same first direction (17), FIG. 7E-F, the first engaging unit (10) engages with the receiving part (14), whereby the adapter attaches to the ostomy implant (4), and after further rotation in the same direction, the second engaging unit (20) provided as part of the first part (8) engages with the emptying device (2). In this example, the second part (9) effectively works as a wedge, and applies a force on the first part (8), whereby the second engaging unit (20) engages with the emptying device (2).

[0136] Thus, the first part (8) and / or the second part (9) may be arranged to move radially outward and / or radially inward upon rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), in a first direction (17). For example, depending on the arrangement of the ostomy implant (4) and the emptying pouch (4). In some examples, the adapter comprises a single type of engaging element, such as one or more first engaging units (10) for engaging with both the emptying device (2) and the ostomy implant (4). In other examples, the adapter comprises a single type of engaging unit, such as one or more first engaging units (8) for engaging with the ostomy implant (4), such as when the adapter is provided as an integral part of the emptying device or when the ostomy pouch is attached to the adapter (7) by other means, such as by a sliding attachment, a screwable attachment, and / or by the use of a lever to hold the emptying device in an attached position.

[0137] Any of the adapters disclosed herein may be provided as an integral part of the emptying device, such as wherein the emptying device (2) has been attached, such as by welding, the provision of adhesive, or by having parts of the adapter (7) being formed together with the emptying pouch (3). The adapter (7) may, for example, be attached to the emptying device, such as the ostomy pouch, for example, around the first opening, at a pouch side (42) of the adapter (7). In an alternative embodiment, the adapter (7) may include locking mechanisms to secure the first part (8) and the second part (9) in place once they have been rotated to the desired position. This can ensure that the adapter remains securely attached to the ostomy implant (4) and the emptying device (2) during use.

[0138] Additionally, the adapter (7) may be designed with ergonomic features on the holding part to provide better grip and ease of use for patients, especially those with limited dexterity. This can include textured surfaces or extended handles.

[0139] The adapter (7) may also include visual indicators or markings that align when the adapter is properly attached to both the ostomy implant (4) and the emptying device (2). These indicators can help users ensure that the device is securely connected.

[0140] Alternative embodiments may incorporate different attachment mechanisms, such as snap-fit, magnetic coupling, or threaded connections, to provide secure and reliable attachment between the adapter (7), the ostomy implant (4), and the emptying device (2). These mechanisms offer versatility in design and can cater to various user preferences and needs.

[0141] For example, a magnetic coupling mechanism could be used where magnetic forces ensure a secure connection between the adapter (7) and the ostomy implant (4). This method can provide ease of attachment and detachment, particularly beneficial for users with limited manual dexterity.

[0142] Threaded connections can be another alternative, where the adapter (7) screws onto the ostomy implant (4), ensuring a tight and leak-proof fit. This method can provide a secure and durable attachment suitable for long-term use.

[0143] FIGS. 8A-G show an illustration of an adapter according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. FIG. 8A shows a perspective view of the adapter (7) comprising a first part (8) and a second part (9). FIG. 80 shows a cross-section of the adapter (7) along a plane of the adapter (7) that is parallel with the radial direction of the adapter, cut line A-A of FIG. 8B. The arrangement of the adapter (7) is similar to the adapter shown in FIG. 7A. In FIG. 80, the first adapter (7) is in a disengaged position, wherein the ostomy implant (4) and the emptying device (2) are detached from the adapter (7). Upon rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), the second part (9), such as the first part, engages with the ostomy implant (4) and thereby attaches the adapter (7) to the ostomy implant (4). Upon further rotation in the same direction of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), the first part (8) applies a force onto the second part (9), whereby the second part (9) engages the emptying device (2).

[0144] FIGS. 8D-E show a cross-section of the presently disclosed adapter (7) along the cut line B-B of FIG. 8B. The adapter is in the disengaged position wherein the first part (8) and / or the second part (9) is not arranged to be engaged with the emptying device (2) and / or the ostomy implant (4). In FIG. 8E, a connecting part (24) of an emptying device (2) has been introduced into the adapter (7), and following rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), the emptying device, such as the ostomy pouch (3) and the connecting part (24), may be attached to the adapter (7).

[0145] In this embodiment, the adapter (7) can include various attachment mechanisms to ensure secure connections between the adapter (7), the ostomy implant (4), and the emptying device (2). These mechanisms can include snap-fit, magnetic coupling, or threaded connections, providing versatility and reliability in attachment.

[0146] The adapter (7) may also incorporate ergonomic features for ease of use, such as textured surfaces or extended handles on the holding parts, ensuring better grip and ease of operation, especially for users with limited dexterity.

[0147] Visual indicators or markings on the adapter (7) can align to show proper attachment to both the ostomy implant (4) and the emptying device (2), ensuring that the connections are secure and correctly made.

[0148] Alternative designs may feature locking mechanisms to hold the first part (8) and the second part (9) in place once rotated to the desired position. This ensures that the adapter (7) remains securely attached during use, preventing accidental disconnections.

[0149] Additionally, the adapter (7) can be provided as an integral part of the emptying device (2), where the emptying device (2) is attached through welding, adhesive, or by being formed together with parts of the adapter (7).

[0150] For example, a magnetic coupling mechanism could be used where magnetic forces ensure a secure connection between the adapter (7) and the ostomy implant (4). This method can provide ease of attachment and detachment, particularly beneficial for users with limited manual dexterity. Threaded connections can be another alternative, where the adapter (7) screws onto the ostomy implant (4), ensuring a tight and leak-proof fit. This method can provide a secure and durable attachment suitable for long-term use. FIGS. 9A-E show an embodiment of the present disclosure wherein the emptying device (2) comprises a connecting part (24) comprising a slider, that is arranged to attach to an adapter (7) comprising a corresponding groove (30).

[0151] FIGS. 9A-G illustrate an adapter according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. FIG. 9A shows a perspective view of the adapter (7) comprising a first part (8) and a second part (9). FIG. 9B shows a cross-section of the adapter (7) along a plane that is parallel with the radial direction of the adapter, cut line A-A of FIG. 9B. The arrangement of the adapter (7) is similar to the adapter shown in FIG. 7A. In FIG. 90, the adapter (7) is in a disengaged position, wherein the ostomy implant (4) and the emptying device (2) are detached from the adapter (7).

[0152] FIGS. 9D-E show a cross-section of the presently disclosed adapter (7) along the cut line B-B of FIG. 9B. The adapter is in the disengaged position wherein the first part (8) and / or the second part (9) is not arranged to be engaged with the emptying device (2) and / or the ostomy implant (4). In FIG. 9E, a connecting part (24) of an emptying device (2) has been introduced into the adapter (7), and following rotation of the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9), the emptying device, such as the ostomy pouch (3) and the connecting part (24), may be attached to the adapter (7).

[0153] In this embodiment, the adapter (7) can include various attachment mechanisms to ensure secure connections between the adapter (7), the ostomy implant (4), and the emptying device (2). These mechanisms can include snap-fit, magnetic coupling, or threaded connections, providing versatility and reliability in attachment.

[0154] The adapter (7) may also incorporate ergonomic features for ease of use, such as textured surfaces or extended handles on the holding parts, ensuring better grip and ease of operation, especially for users with limited dexterity. Visual indicators or markings on the adapter (7) can align to show proper attachment to both the ostomy implant (4) and the emptying device (2), ensuring that the connections are secure and correctly made.

[0155] Alternative designs may feature locking mechanisms to hold the first part (8) and the second part (9) in place once rotated to the desired position. This ensures that the adapter (7) remains securely attached during use, preventing accidental disconnections.

[0156] Additionally, the adapter (7) can be provided as an integral part of the emptying device (2), where the emptying device (2) is attached through welding, adhesive, or by being formed together with parts of the adapter (7).

[0157] For example, a magnetic coupling mechanism could be used where magnetic forces ensure a secure connection between the adapter (7) and the ostomy implant (4). This method can provide ease of attachment and detachment, particularly beneficial for users with limited manual dexterity.

[0158] Threaded connections can be another alternative, where the adapter (7) screws onto the ostomy implant (4), ensuring a tight and leak-proof fit. This method can provide a secure and durable attachment suitable for long-term use.

[0159] The adapter (7) is arranged to allow for slidable attachment of a connecting part (24) of an emptying device (2), typically a connecting part (24) comprising a slider. The adapter (7) may be arranged to engage with the connecting part (24) upon sliding of the connecting part (24) onto the adapter (7), such as in a groove (30) of the adapter (7). Typically, the groove (30) is arranged in a radial direction of the slider, such as along a distance across the typically substantially circular pouch side (42) of the adapter, such as along a part of a diameter of the pouch end (42) of the adapter (7).

[0160] The slider may comprise an aperture (31) that is arranged such that, when the emptying device (2) is attached to the adapter (7), the interior volume of the ostomy pouch (3) is fluidically connected to the through-hole (11) of the adapter, through said aperture (31). Thus, the interior volume (6) of the ostomy pouch may be attached to an exterior opening of the ostomy implant (4). The emptying system (1) may, in the attached position, such as when the adapter (7) is attached to the ostomy implant (4) and the emptying device (2) is attached to the adapter (7), function properly. The groove (30) may be provided as a recess in the pouch side (42) of the adapter (7). Thus, the adapter (7) may be arranged such that the part of the adapter (7) that surrounds the groove, which may effectively form the groove, extends in a planar direction across the entire face of the pouch side of the adapter (7). Thus, the pouch side (42) of the adapter (7) may be planar, except for the groove (30). The groove may also be referred to as a track. Thus, the slider may be slid along a track / groove. The groove may be provided in a recess, or a protruding part.

[0161] In this way, attaching the slider to the adapter (7) may result in a substantial smooth and / or flat surface, which may increase the comfort for the patient, and results in a more secure attachment.

[0162] Alternatively, the pouch side (42) of the adapter (7) comprises multiple recesses and / or protrusions. The groove (30) may for example be formed in a part that protrudes from a pouch side (42) face of the adapter (7).

[0163] The adapter (7) may for example first be attached to the ostomy implant (4) by rotating a first part (8) with respect to the second part (9). The user may for example hold a second part (9) of the adapter stationary, while rotating the first part (8), such as in a first direction (17). This may attach the adapter to the ostomy implant (4).

[0164] Following attachment of the adapter (7) to the ostomy implant (4), the user may slidably attach the connecting part (24) of the emptying device (2) to the adapter (7). Alternatively, the adapter may be attached to the emptying device (2) before attachment of the adapter (7) to the ostomy implant (4).

[0165] The connecting part (24) may comprise a holding part (32) that allows the user to control the connecting part (24) and / or the emptying device (2). The user may hold onto the holding part (32) to easier connect the connecting part (24) to the adapter (7), for example such as to easier slide the slider into, and / or in, the groove of the adapter (7). Further, the holding part (32) may allow the user to control the orientation of the ostomy pouch (3) with respect to the adapter (7), for example, the user may want to have a distal part of the ostomy pouch to extend in the gravitation direction, such as downwardly when the user is standing up, such as to ensure that the stomal waste collects in the interior volume (6) of the ostomy pouch (3). Thus, also emptying devices without a slider may comprise a holding part (32). In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the emptying system (1) comprises a stopping arrangement (33), for restricting the movement of the connecting part (e.g., a slider). The stopping arrangement may for example prevent the slider from sliding further in an inserting direction, such as in the direction of insertion of the slider. The stopping arrangement may be arranged to prevent the slider from sliding further in the inserting direction when the slider is in an open position, wherein the interior volume (6) of the ostomy pouch (3) is fluidically connected to the through-hole (11) of the adapter, and / or to the opening of the ostomy implant (4).

[0166] The adapter (7) may comprise an opening that is smaller than the through-hole (11), or alternatively larger or the same size. When the slider is in the open position, the aperture (31) of the slider at least partly overlaps with the opening of the aperture. In this way, the interior volume (6) may be fluidically connected to the through-hole (11) of the adapter, and / or to the opening of the ostomy implant (4). Thus, in an embodiment of the present disclosure, the emptying device is arranged such that when the slider is fully inserted, the interior volume of the ostomy pouch is fluidically connected to the through-hole of the adapter, through the aperture of the slider.

[0167] In this embodiment, the adapter (7) can include various attachment mechanisms to ensure secure connections between the adapter (7), the ostomy implant (4), and the emptying device (2). These mechanisms can include snap-fit, magnetic coupling, or threaded connections, providing versatility and reliability in attachment.

[0168] The adapter (7) may also incorporate ergonomic features for ease of use, such as textured surfaces or extended handles on the holding parts, ensuring better grip and ease of operation, especially for users with limited dexterity.

[0169] Visual indicators or markings on the adapter (7) can align to show proper attachment to both the ostomy implant (4) and the emptying device (2), ensuring that the connections are secure and correctly made.

[0170] Alternative designs may feature locking mechanisms to hold the first part (8) and the second part (9) in place once rotated to the desired position. This ensures that the adapter (7) remains securely attached during use, preventing accidental disconnections. Additionally, the adapter (7) can be provided as an integral part of the emptying device (2), where the emptying device (2) is attached through welding, adhesive, or by being formed together with parts of the adapter (7).

[0171] For example, a magnetic coupling mechanism could be used where magnetic forces ensure a secure connection between the adapter (7) and the ostomy implant (4). This method can provide ease of attachment and detachment, particularly beneficial for users with limited manual dexterity.

[0172] Threaded connections can be another alternative, where the adapter (7) screws onto the ostomy implant (4), ensuring a tight and leak-proof fit. This method can provide a secure and durable attachment suitable for long-term use.

[0173] FIGS. 10A-C illustrate an embodiment of the emptying system (1) in the open position, i.e. , the connecting part (24) is positioned in the open position. FIG. 10A presents a perspective view, FIG. 10B shows a side view, and FIG. 10C provides a top-down view. The emptying system (1) comprises an emptying device (not shown in FIGS. 10A-C) and the adapter (7). The emptying device includes an ostomy pouch (3) with a first opening (5) and an interior volume (6). The adapter (7) features a through-hole (11) and at least one first engaging unit (10) arranged around the through-hole for attachment to the ostomy implant (4).

[0174] The emptying system is arranged so that the connecting part (24) can be received by the adapter (7), for example by a receiving structure (30). The receiving structure may be a linear groove. Alternatively, the receiving structure may be a screw arrangement, or a mechanical fastener, such as one or more latches, clasps, or snap-fit connectors. Thus, the connecting part may have a shape that corresponds to the shape of the receiving structure. For instance, the connecting part and the receiving structure may have corresponding shapes of a snap-fit connector, latch connector, screw arrangement, or sliding arrangement (e.g., a slider and a groove). The receiving structure and the connecting part may also be configured as a hook-and-loop fastener, such as Velcro®. Other suitable arrangements for the connecting part and the receiving structure are known to the skilled person, and the present disclosure is not limited to a specific type of arrangement. The connecting part (24) is shown in the open position, wherein a sealed fluidic connection is formed between the interior volume (6) of the ostomy pouch (3) and the through-hole (11) of the adapter (7). In the version shown, this fluidic connection is formed through an aperture (31) of the connecting part (24). The connecting part can be configured to be moved between an open position and a closed position. In the open position, the connecting part ensures a fluidic connection between the through-hole of the adapter and the interior volume of the emptying device, allowing for the transfer of waste from the ostomy pouch to the emptying device, facilitating the emptying process.

[0175] In contrast, in the closed position, the through-hole of the adapter is not fluidically connected to the interior volume of the emptying device. This disconnection can prevent any accidental discharge of waste when the system is not in use. The sealing mechanism between the adapter and the connecting part, typically involving an upper gasket and the closing part of the connecting part, ensures that no waste escapes from the system, maintaining hygiene and safety.

[0176] The connecting part (24) can include an activation tab (36) designed to be pushed or pulled in a direction away from the implant (4) to enable movement to the gas-release position. The activation tab (36) may be arranged so that movement to the unlock position is prevented unless the activation tab (36) is engaged, ensuring secure operation and preventing accidental activation.

[0177] Once the connecting part (24) has been moved to the unlock position (e.g., the gasrelease position or a further position), the connecting part can be used as a lever, controlling the rotation of the first part (8) relative to the second part (9) and thereby facilitating the attachment or detachment of the adapter (7) to the ostomy implant (4).

[0178] In one embodiment, when the emptying system is in the unlock position, the connecting part (24) cannot be detached from the adapter (7) if the one or more first engaging units (10) are in the engaged position. The connecting part (24) can, in the unlock position, be used to rotate the first part (8) with respect to the second part (9) to move the one or more first engaging units (10) from the engaged position to the disengaged position, allowing the emptying system to be detached from the ostomy implant (4). Once detached, the connecting part (24) may be removed from the adapter (7). Thus, the connecting part (24) can in certain examples only be detached when it is in the unlock position and when the emptying system is not attached to the implant (4).

[0179] The emptying system can comprise an emptying device (not shown) that has a first opening attached to a first end (25) of the connecting part (24). The first opening is attached around the aperture (31) of the connecting part (24). In this way, a sealed fluidic connection is formed between the stoma and the interior volume of the emptying device, through the aperture of the connecting part (24).

[0180] The adapter (7) can comprise a first part (8) and a second part (9). The first part (8) fits within the second part (9) and is rotatable with respect to it, allowing for locking and unlocking the adapter (7) to the ostomy implant (4), e.g., by moving a first engaging unit from a disengaged position to an engaged position. This rotational interaction, controlled by the connecting part (24), can thereby move the one or more first engaging units (10) to an engaged or disengaged position. Flexible sealing elements (16) in the adapter (7) provide a secure seal between the adapter and the ostomy implant. Upon rotation of the first part with the second part, the first part can be made to move axially with respect to the second part. This can result in the formation of a seal by a sealing element of the first part, to the ostomy implant. This can also result in the first part pushing on an actuator, which moves the first engaging unit from the disengaged position to the engaged position, thereby also attaching the emptying system to the ostomy implant. The arrangement of how the first part can be used to push onto an actuator, resulting in moving the first part to the engaged position is also described elsewhere herein.

[0181] The first engaging units (10) may be symmetrically arranged around the through-hole (11) to distribute the attachment force evenly and prevent accidental detachment. This symmetrical arrangement ensures uniform pressure distribution, enhancing the seal and reducing the risk of leaks.

[0182] The adapter (7) may comprise a rotatable first part (8) within the second part (9), arranged for effective attachment and detachment of the emptying system to the ostomy implant (4). When the connecting part (24), of this example, is moved to the open position, it ensures that the through-hole (11) of the adapter aligns with the aperture of the connecting part, facilitating efficient waste transfer. The controlled rotation, managed by the connecting part (24), and activation tab (36) when present, ensures secure and leak-proof operation. Flexible sealing elements (16) enhance comfort and prevent leaks, while additional first engaging units (10) ensure stability and prevent accidental detachment.

[0183] In one embodiment, the first part (8) further comprises an upper gasket around the through-hole (11), for example, in the groove of the adapter. The connecting part (24) and the upper gasket can be used to form a liquid-tight sealing in the closed position. In one embodiment, the connecting part (24) comprises two lower side guide rails, while the first part (8) comprises two corresponding guide grooves for guiding these rails.

[0184] The connecting part (24) may extend across the diameter of the adapter when assembled. The connecting part (24) may thereby be substantially rectangular with slightly curved ends to match the circumference. It may have a curved upper surface extending along its length. The groove or recess of the first part (8) is dimensioned to allow the connecting part (24) to move through it.

[0185] By controlling the locking of the adapter, e.g., the second part (9), to the ostomy implant (4) through the rotation of the first part (8), a solution that is easy to use for the wearer is obtained. The second part (9) may comprise a substantially cylindrical sidewall and a substantially flat bottom ring part. This bottom ring part may be a substantially flat annular structure, though it does not have to be completely flat.

[0186] The second part (9) can include a plurality of one or more first engaging units (10), which can be configured to engage with a circumferential groove of the ostomy implant (4). The one or more first engaging units (10) can be made of a flexible and / or resilient material, such as plastic. This can allow them to have a default configuration where they do not engage with the groove of the ostomy implant (4). When a mechanism pushes and holds these first engaging units in the groove in the locked configuration (engaged position of the first engaging unit), they automatically return to their default configuration once the mechanism is deactivated or released.

[0187] The one or more first engaging units (10) can be arranged on an inner edge of the second part (9), pointing upwardly with a slightly inwardly bent edge. 'Upwardly' refers to the longitudinal direction towards the connecting part (24), while 'inwardly' refers to the radial direction towards the center of the cylindrical base part. These engaging units act as resilient pins with hooks designed to engage with the groove of the ostomy implant (4). The number of one or more first engaging units (10) is not limited, and any suitable number may be used, as recognized by those skilled in the art.

[0188] Figures 11A-C illustrate an embodiment of the emptying system (1) in the closed position. FIG. 11A presents a perspective view, FIG. 11 B shows a side view, and FIG. 11C provides a top-down view. The connecting part (24) is depicted in the closed position, where the through-hole (11) of the adapter (7) is not fluidical ly connected to the interior volume (6) of the emptying device (2). The adapter (7) may be provided with an upper gasket (50) arranged around the through-hole (11). Alternatively or additionally, the gasket (50) may be provided on the connecting part (24). In the closed position, the upper gasket (50) may form a seal with the closing part (52) of the connecting part (24). Specifically, the closing part (52) is designed to engage with the upper gasket (50), creating a liquid-tight seal. This ensures that no stoma waste can escape through the through-hole (11) when the system is in the closed position. The upper gasket (50) and the closing part (52) work together to maintain this seal.

[0189] The seal is typically formed between the adapter (7) and the connecting part (24), with the gasket provided on either, or both, of these components. When the connecting part (24) is moved to the closed position, the second end (26) of the closing part (52) comes into contact with the upper gasket (50). This contact creates a secure seal around the through-hole (11), preventing any stoma waste from being discharged through the adapter (7) and the connecting part (24).

[0190] The upper gasket (50) is made from a flexible, resilient material that can conform to the shape of the second end (26) of the closing part (52), ensuring a tight and reliable seal.

[0191] By using the upper gasket (50) and the closing part (52) in this manner, the emptying system (1) provides a robust solution for sealing the adapter (7) when not in use, enhancing the safety and reliability of the system for the user.

[0192] The connecting part (24) may comprise a retaining arrangement (34) for retaining the connecting part in one or more positions, such as the closed position. This retaining arrangement (34) ensures that the connecting part remains securely in place until a predetermined force is applied to move it.

[0193] The retaining arrangement (34) typically consists of a series of detents or friction-based elements that interact with corresponding features on the adapter (7). When the connecting part (24) is moved to the closed position, these detents or friction elements engage, creating a resistance that holds the connecting part (24) firmly in place.

[0194] To move the connecting part (24) away from the closed position or any other retained position, a user must apply a predetermined force. This force must be sufficient to overcome the retaining force exerted by the retaining arrangement (34). The design of the retaining arrangement (34) ensures that this force threshold is high enough to prevent accidental dislodging of the connecting part (24) but not so high as to make intentional adjustments difficult.

[0195] For instance, the retaining arrangement (34) may include a spring-loaded mechanism that provides a consistent retaining force. When the user applies the necessary force to the activation tab (36) or directly to the connecting part (24), the spring mechanism compresses, allowing the connecting part (24) to move. Once the force is removed, the spring mechanism returns to its original position, re-engaging the detents and securing the connecting part (24) in the new position.

[0196] In some embodiments, the retaining arrangement (34) may feature multiple detent positions, allowing the connecting part (24) to be held securely in various operational states, such as the closed position, gas-release position, or fully open position. This versatility provides users with precise control over the operation of the emptying system (1), enhancing its functionality and user-friendliness.

[0197] This setup ensures that no waste can escape from the ostomy pouch (3) when the system is not actively emptying, providing safety and reliability. The emptying system comprises an emptying device (not shown) that has a first opening attached to a first end (25) of the connecting part (24). The first opening is therefore attached around the aperture (31) of the connecting part (24).

[0198] The closed position configuration of the emptying system (1) ensures that the ostomy implant remains securely sealed when not in use. This prevents any accidental leakage of stomal waste and provides peace of mind for the user.

[0199] FIGS. 12A-C illustrate an embodiment of the emptying system (1) in the gas-release position. The activation tabs (36) have thereby been activated to move the connecting part (24) to the gas-release position. FIG. 12A presents a perspective view, FIG. 12B shows a side view, and FIG. 12C provides a top-down view. The connecting part (24) with its activation tab (36) is in the gas-release position, allowing degassing of the interior volume (6) and / or the ostomy implant (4).

[0200] An odor control unit may be provided to prevent odor release when the connecting part is in the gas-release position. This configuration allows for safe and hygienic degassing of the system while ensuring that no unpleasant odors are released during the process. The emptying system comprises an emptying device (not shown) that has a first opening attached to a first end (25) of the connecting part (24). The first opening is therefore attached around the aperture (31) of the connecting part (24).

[0201] The gas-release position is particularly beneficial for users who experience gas buildup within the ostomy pouch (3). The activation tab (36) allows for quick and easy access to release gas without removing the entire emptying system (1). The inclusion of the odor control unit ensures that the degassing process is discrete and does not cause any discomfort or embarrassment to the user. This feature enhances the overall usability and convenience of the emptying system, making it a practical solution for daily ostomy care.

[0202] The odor control unit can be designed with advanced filtration materials such as activated carbon or other odor-absorbing substances to maximize its effectiveness. Additionally, the gas-release mechanism can be adjustable, allowing users to control the rate of gas release based on their comfort and needs. This adjustability can be achieved through a variable aperture size or a controllable valve system integrated into the adapter or the connecting part (24). The gas-release mechanism may be arranged so that the through-hole of the adapter is fluidical ly connected to the ambient air, for example, by moving the connecting part axially, so that gas may escape between the adapter and the connecting part. Alternatively, or additionally, gas may escape from the interior volume of the emptying device, through the aperture of the connecting part. As such, while the emptying device may be sealed around the aperture of the connecting part on a first end, the surface around the aperture on the second end of the connecting part may not be sealed to the adapter, allowing gas to escape to the ambient air.

[0203] FIG. 13 illustrates an embodiment of the emptying system (1) from a perspective view. This embodiment features two activation tabs (36) that must be pushed together to allow the connecting part (24) to be moved to the gas-release position. This dual-tab design enhances the security and prevents accidental activation, ensuring that the gasrelease position is only reached intentionally. The emptying system comprises an emptying device (not shown) that has a first opening attached to a first end (25) of the connecting part (24). The first opening is therefore attached around the aperture (31) of the connecting part (24).

[0204] The dual activation tabs (36) provide an added layer of safety, ensuring that the gasrelease function is not accidentally triggered. This design consideration is particularly important for users who may be active or engaged in physical activities, as it minimizes the risk of unintended gas release. The secure and deliberate activation mechanism improves the reliability of the emptying system, making it a dependable choice for managing stomal waste.

[0205] Furthermore, the dual-tab mechanism can be designed to require simultaneous pressure from both tabs, making it difficult to accidentally engage the gas-release position. This design can be further enhanced with ergonomic considerations, such as textured surfaces or finger grips on the tabs, to ensure ease of use and prevent slippage during activation.

[0206] FIG. 14 shows a further embodiment of the emptying system (1) from a perspective view. This embodiment also has two activation tabs (36), but they must be pushed or pulled in a direction away from the implant to allow the connecting part (24) to move to the gas-release position. This configuration combines the security of dual activation with the simplicity of a straightforward push / pull mechanism, providing both safety and ease of use. The emptying system comprises an emptying device (not shown) that has a first opening attached to a first end (25) of the connecting part (24). The first opening is therefore attached around the aperture (31) of the connecting part (24).

[0207] The push / pull activation mechanism for the gas-release position adds to the user- friendly design of the emptying system. This method of activation is intuitive and can be easily performed, even by users with limited dexterity. The dual-tab design ensures that the gas-release function is secure and not prone to accidental activation, providing both safety and convenience.

[0208] FIG. 15 illustrates a flow chart outlining a method of manufacturing an emptying system (400). The method comprises providing an adapter (100), which may include various components necessary for its function. The method further includes a step of providing an emptying device (200), designed to work in conjunction with the adapter. The method can comprise a step of assembling the adapter and the emptying device (300), thereby manufacturing an emptying system.

[0209] The method may further include additional optional steps. For example, the method may comprise incorporating flexible sealing elements in the adapter to ensure a secure seal between the adapter and the ostomy implant. Additionally, the method can include providing a connecting part that can be moved between an open position and a closed position, where the through-hole of the adapter is fluidically connected to the interior volume of the emptying device in the open position and not fluidically connected in the closed position. An activation tab may be added to the connecting part, which must be engaged to move the connecting part to the unlock or gas-release position, ensuring secure operation and preventing accidental activation.

[0210] The adapter can be configured with a first part and a second part, where the first part fits within and is rotatable with respect to the second part. This rotational interaction can facilitate the attachment or detachment of the adapter to the ostomy implant by moving one or more first engaging units to an engaged or disengaged position. The first engaging units may be symmetrically arranged around the through-hole to distribute the attachment force evenly and prevent accidental detachment.

[0211] The method may also include the incorporation of an upper gasket around the through- hole in the first part of the adapter, which forms a liquid-tight seal with the connecting part in the closed position. The adapter's second part can be configured with a substantially cylindrical sidewall and a substantially flat bottom ring part, which may include a plurality of first engaging units made of a flexible and / or resilient material to engage with a circumferential groove of the ostomy implant.

[0212] The connecting part can be designed to extend across the diameter of the adapter when assembled and include guide rails that fit into corresponding guide grooves of the first part, allowing for efficient movement through a groove or recess in the first part.

[0213] By controlling the locking of the adapter, e.g., the second part (9), to the ostomy implant (4) through the rotation of the first part (8), a solution that is easy to use for the wearer is obtained. The second part (9) may comprise a substantially cylindrical sidewall and a substantially flat bottom ring part. This bottom ring part may be a substantially flat annular structure, though it does not have to be completely flat.

[0214] The second part (9) can include a plurality of one or more first engaging units (10), which can be configured to engage with a circumferential groove of the ostomy implant (4).

[0215] The one or more first engaging units (10) can be arranged on an inner edge of the second part (9), pointing upwardly with a slightly inwardly bent edge.
