Abstract
Description
METAL COOKING SUPPORT THAT CAN BE HEATED BY INDUCTION
[0001] The present invention relates to the technical field of metal cooking supports compatible with induction heating, for cooking or heating food. Such metal cooking supports can be used with an induction heating device such as an induction hob placed on or integrated into a worktop, or an induction heating zone integrated into an electrical cooking appliance.
[0002] The present invention relates in particular, but not exclusively, to metal cooking supports forming a cooking container.
[0003] The present invention also relates to cooking articles comprising a metal cooking support associated with at least one gripping member. If desired, the gripping member(s) may be removable or detachable from the metal cooking support.
[0004] The present invention also relates to electrical cooking appliances comprising a metal cooking support associated with an induction heating device.
[0005] It is known to produce cookware comprising a metal body made of aluminum, which are compatible with induction heating, by using a metal insert made of ferromagnetic metal assembled with the bottom of said metal body.
[0006] Document EP0509860 describes, for example, in the embodiment illustrated in Figure 12, a metal insert made in the form of a perforated sheet. Such a construction makes it possible to produce cookware compatible with induction heating, which heat satisfactorily.
[0007] A disadvantage of this type of construction, however, is that it is necessary to have a press with a relatively high striking tonnage to correctly assemble said metal body with said insert. Another disadvantage of this type of construction also lies in the fact that it is difficult to reduce the thickness of the metal body below 3 mm, while maintaining deformations of the bottom that remain acceptable over the course of uses.
[0008] Document EP0509860 also describes in the embodiment example illustrated in Figure 15 a metal insert made of expanded metal. This document however proposes to fix this metal insert on the surface of a metal substrate with a stamping operation to at least partially embed said insert in said surface.
[0009] A disadvantage of this embodiment lies in the fact that it is difficult to pre-crimp such a metal insert made of expanded metal onto said surface of the metal substrate before carrying out a stamping operation for the final assembly. If a pre-crimp is carried out on the free edge of the metal insert made of expanded metal, or in other words on the periphery of the metal insert made of expanded metal, the attachment points made on the periphery of said metal insert will generate appearance defects, because during the final assembly the stamping operation generates a radial sliding of the aluminum from the metal substrate, under the effect of the pressure of the press. If pre-crimping is carried out on the surface of the metal insert made of expanded metal, rather than on the free edge of said metal insert, the pressure to be applied risks locally degrading said metal insert, and / or the metal substrate, particularly when the latter is coated, and / or risks locally hardening the metal substrate, which also generates appearance defects.
[0010] Various aspects of the present invention aim to overcome the drawbacks of the prior art by providing a metal cooking support compatible with induction heating, which is easy to produce, and which is free from appearance defects.
[0011] A first aspect of the present invention relates to a metal cooking support compatible with induction heating, having a cooking face and a heating face, comprising a metal substrate made of aluminum or aluminum alloy, as well as an expanded metal insert made of ferromagnetic material, said expanded metal insert being inserted at least partially into the metal substrate on the heating face side, the expanded metal insert having an inter-strand opening diameter, due to the fact that the expanded metal insert has in its central portion a central opening and / or at least one non-central opening, having an opening section at least equal to twice the inter-strand opening diameter, preferably at least equal to three times the inter-strand opening diameter, more preferably at least equal to four times the inter-strand opening diameter, preferably at least equal to five times the inter-strand opening diameter. These arrangements make it possible to pre-crimp the expanded metal insert onto the metal substrate, by locally deforming the expanded metal insert over at least a portion of said central opening and / or said at least one non-central opening. The highly deformable nature of the expanded metal makes it easy to carry out this pre-crimping operation. The inter-strand opening diameter of the expanded metal insert being less than the smallest dimension of said central opening and / or said at least one non-central opening, the expanded metal insert will necessarily have the free strand portions in said central opening and / or said at least one non-central opening, which can be deformed to be implanted in the metal substrate during the pre-crimping operation. The metal substrate will then be visible in said central opening and / or said at least one non-central opening. However, since the inductors intended for induction heating have an annular geometry, the creation of said central opening and / or said at least one non-central opening does not affect the induction heating performance. The striking operation for the final assembly of the expanded metal insert and the metal substrate can then be carried out with correct support of the two parts to be assembled.,
[0012] The heating face may have a depressed area in which at least a portion of said at least one non-central opening extends. Such an arrangement makes it possible to mask defects resulting from the pre-crimping operation.
[0013] The at least one non-central opening may extend entirely into the depressed area. Such an arrangement makes it easier to mask defects resulting from the pre-crimping operation.
[0014] The depressed area can be annular. This arrangement makes it easier to create the depressed area.
[0015] The depth of the depressed area can be between 0.1 and 0.5 mm, preferably between 0.2 and 0.4 mm.
[0016] The expanded metal insert may have in its central portion several non-central openings, preferably at least 3 non-central openings, having an opening section at least equal to twice the inter-strand opening diameter, preferably at least equal to three times the inter-strand opening diameter (OB), more preferably at least equal to four times the inter-strand opening diameter, more preferably at least equal to five times the inter-strand opening diameter. These arrangements make it possible to facilitate the pre-crimping operation, the different non-central openings having free edges of different orientation, which are deformed to carry out the pre-crimping, which allows better mechanical strength of the assembly.
[0017] Non-central openings can be elongated more in the radial direction than in the transverse direction. These arrangements provide better mechanical strength for the expanded metal insert while facilitating its pre-crimping.
[0018] The metal cooking support may in particular have at least 6 non-central openings, and preferably 12 non-central openings. These arrangements make it easier to carry out pre-crimping.
[0019] Non-central openings can be distributed in an annular area of the expanded metal insert. This arrangement allows a central area of the metal cooking support to be left free.
[0020] Non-central openings can be distributed regularly around a central area of the expanded metal insert. These arrangements make it easier to carry out pre-crimping.
[0021] The expanded metal insert may have a central opening having an opening section at least equal to twice the inter-strand opening diameter, preferably at least equal to three times the inter-strand opening diameter, more preferably at least equal to four times the inter-strand opening diameter, more preferably at least equal to five times the inter-strand opening diameter.
[0022] The metal substrate may in particular have a substrate thickness less than or equal to 3.4 mm, preferably less than or equal to 3 mm, more preferably less than or equal to 2.5 mm. Compared to an insert made in the form of a perforated plate, the use of an insert made of expanded metal makes it possible to reduce the forces required to implant the insert in the metal substrate, which makes it possible to reduce the thickness of the metal substrate.
[0023] If desired, the metal substrate can be made from recycled alloy. Recycled alloys are indeed harder than the corresponding new alloys.
[0024] The expanded metal insert can in particular be made of ferritic stainless steel, preferably type 430 stainless steel. Other ferromagnetic materials can however be considered for making the expanded metal insert, in particular aluminized steels, these materials comprising a non-stainless steel substrate covered with aluminum on both sides.
[0025] The metal cooking rack may have a bottom configured to rest on an induction heating device.
[0026] According to one embodiment, the bottom is flat.
[0027] A side wall can rise around the bottom to form a cooking vessel.
[0028] The metal substrate may have a non-stick coating forming a cooking surface of the cooking face. The non-stick coating may include a PTFE-type coating, a ceramic-type coating, a sol-gel-type coating, a silicone resin-based coating, or a silicone-polyester resin-based coating. The non-stick coating may be single-layer or multi-layer. If desired, other non-stick coatings compatible with food contact may be considered.
[0029] The metal substrate and the expanded metal insert may have a protective coating forming a heating surface for the heating face. The protective coating may include a PTFE-type coating, an enamel-type coating, a lacquer-type coating, a ceramic-type coating, a sol-gel-type coating, a silicone resin-based coating, or a silicone-polyester resin-based coating. The protective coating may be single-layer or multi-layer. If desired, other protective coatings may be considered.
[0030] A second aspect of the present invention relates to a culinary article comprising a metal cooking support and a gripping member mounted on the metal cooking support, in which the metal cooking support conforms to at least one of the aforementioned characteristics.
[0031] A third aspect of the present invention relates to an electrical cooking appliance comprising a metal cooking support associated with an induction heating zone, in which the metal cooking support conforms to at least one of the aforementioned characteristics.

[0038] The figure represents a schematic view in elevation and in cross-section of an exemplary embodiment of a culinary article comprising a metal cooking support according to the invention.
[0039] The figure represents a schematic view in elevation and in cross-section of an exemplary embodiment of an electrical cooking appliance comprising a metal cooking support according to the invention.
[0040] Illustrates an exemplary embodiment of a metal cooking support 10 compatible with induction heating. The metal cooking support 10 has a cooking face 11 and a heating face 12. The heating face 12 has a base 13 configured to rest on an induction heating device. Depending on the induction heating device used, the base 13 may be flat or not, for example curved.
[0041] The heating face 12 has a depressed zone 33 relative to the main part of the bottom 13, visible on the. More particularly in the embodiment illustrated on the, the depressed zone 33 is annular. The depressed zone 33 is surrounded by an external zone 36 of the bottom 13. The depressed zone 33 surrounds an internal zone 37 of the bottom 13. The depth of the depressed zone 33 is advantageously between 0.1 and 0.5 mm, preferably between 0.2 and 0.4 mm. The depth of the depressed zone 33 is for example 0.3 mm.
[0042] The metal cooking support 10 comprises a metal substrate 2 made of aluminum or aluminum alloy. The metal substrate 2 may in particular be made of recycled alloy, such alloys usually being harder than the corresponding new alloys.
[0043] The metal cooking support 10 comprises an expanded metal insert 3 made of ferromagnetic material, advantageously ferritic stainless steel. The expanded metal insert 3 may in particular be made of type 430 stainless steel. The expanded metal insert has a mesh network of strands 30 defining inter-strand openings 31.
[0044] As best seen in the, the expanded metal insert 3 has a strand thickness EB, a strand width LB, and an inter-strand opening diameter OB. The expanded metal insert 3 also has a front transparency which corresponds to the ratio of the open area between the strands to the total area.
[0045] As seen in the as well as in the, the expanded metal insert 3 has a central opening 38. The central opening 38 encompasses the geometric center of the expanded metal insert 3. However, the central opening 38 is not necessarily centered on the geometric center of the expanded metal insert 3. In the embodiment illustrated in the figures, the central opening 38 is circular. The central opening 38 has a diameter of the order of 10 mm. As a variant, other geometries may be envisaged for the central opening 38, for example an elongated geometry or a geometry with several branches. Preferably, the central opening 38 has a maximum section of less than 30 mm, more preferably less than 25 mm, more preferably less than 20 mm, more preferably less than 15 mm.
[0046] As seen in the as well as in the, the expanded metal insert 3 has in its central portion several non-central openings 32. The non-central openings 32 are distributed in an annular zone 34 of the expanded metal insert 3. The non-central openings 32 are distributed regularly around a central zone 35 of the expanded metal insert 3. The non-central openings 32 are more elongated in the radial direction than in the transverse direction.
[0047] In the embodiment illustrated in the figures, there are 12 non-central openings. The length of the non-central openings 32 is, for example, of the order of 10.5 mm, while the width of the non-central openings 32 is, for example, of the order of 6 mm.
[0048] The non-central openings 32 have an opening section at least equal to twice the inter-strand opening diameter OB, preferably at least equal to three times the inter-strand opening diameter OB, more preferably at least equal to four times the inter-strand opening diameter OB, more preferably at least equal to five times the inter-strand opening diameter OB. The opening section of the central opening 38 is at least equal to twice the inter-strand opening diameter OB, preferably at least equal to three times the inter-strand opening diameter OB, more preferably at least equal to four times the inter-strand opening diameter OB, more preferably at least equal to five times the inter-strand opening diameter OB.
[0049] As seen in the, the non-central openings 32 extend entirely into the depressed area 33. If desired, at least a portion of at least one non-central opening 32 may extend into the depressed area 33.
[0050] The expanded metal insert 3 is inserted at least partially into the metal substrate 2, on the side of the heating face 12, in order to make the metal cooking support 10 compatible with induction heating.
[0051] Schematically illustrates the expanded metal insert 3 inserted into the metal substrate 2. As best seen in the, the metal substrate 2 has a substrate thickness ES. The substrate thickness ES is advantageously less than or equal to 3.4 mm, preferably less than or equal to 3 mm, more preferably less than or equal to 2.5 mm. Preferably the substrate thickness ES is greater than or equal to 2 mm, more preferably greater than or equal to 2.2 mm.
[0052] As best seen in the, a side wall 16 (partially shown) rises around the bottom 13 to form a cooking vessel 20.
[0053] As shown in the, the expanded metal insert 3 extends only in the area of the bottom 13 without reaching the side wall 16. More particularly, the expanded metal insert 3 extends throughout the area of the bottom 13. It should be noted that the representation of the is schematic and that the expanded metal insert 3 does not entirely cover the bottom 13. In other words, the metal substrate 2 is visible through the inter-strand openings 31 of the expanded metal insert 3. As a variant, the expanded metal insert 3 does not necessarily extend over the entire bottom 13. As a further variant, the expanded metal insert 3 could extend over at least a portion of the side wall 16.
[0054] The metal cooking support 10 illustrated in the can be obtained by the following method.
[0055] The expanded metal insert 3 is arranged on the metal substrate 2. A pre-crimping of the expanded metal insert 3 is carried out at at least one of the non-central openings 32 by carrying out at least one localized striking operation on the free edge of the expanded metal insert 3, which locally deforms said free edge of the expanded metal insert 3 and inserts it into the metal substrate 2. The high deformability of the expanded metal insert 3 facilitates the carrying out of such an operation. Preferably the pre-crimping of the expanded metal insert 3 is carried out at several non-central openings 32 by carrying out a localized striking operation on the free edge of the expanded metal insert 3 at said non-central openings 32. Advantageously the non-central openings 32 having undergone a deformation to carry out the pre-crimping surround the central zone 35.Thus, during the pre-crimping operation, only a portion of the expanded metal insert 3 is inserted into the metal substrate 2. Furthermore, this insertion may be partial. In other words, in the deformed area of the expanded metal insert 3, the expanded metal insert 3 is not necessarily completely inserted into the metal substrate 2.
[0056] The expanded metal insert 3 pre-crimped onto the metal substrate 2 can then be assembled more durably by a coining operation. In contrast to the pre-crimping operation, the coining operation concerns the entire surface of the expanded metal insert 3. A shape can be provided on the coining punch at the non-central openings 32 so as to produce the depressed area 33 during the coining operation. The pre-crimping of the expanded metal insert 3 onto the metal substrate 2 ensures the correct positioning of the expanded metal insert 3 onto the metal substrate 2 before and during the coining operation. The coining operation provides a durable assembly of the expanded metal insert 3 into the surface of the metal substrate 2.
[0057] Alternatively or additionally, pre-crimping of the expanded metal insert 3 may be carried out at the central opening 38 by carrying out at least one localized striking operation on the free edge of the expanded metal insert 3, which locally deforms said free edge of the expanded metal insert 3 and inserts it into the metal substrate 2.
[0058] Illustrates an alternative embodiment in which the metal cooking support 10 has a non-stick coating 1 and a protective coating 5. The non-stick coating 1 forms a cooking surface 14 of the cooking face 11. The protective coating 5 forms a heating surface 15 of the heating face 12. The metal substrate 2 carries the non-stick coating 1 on the side of the cooking face 11. The metal substrate 2 and the expanded metal insert 3 carry the protective coating 5 on the side of the heating face 12. The expanded metal insert 3 is inserted into the metal substrate 2 on the side of the heating face 12. Due to the inter-strand openings 31 between the strands 30 of the expanded metal insert 3, the expanded metal insert 3 does not completely cover the metal substrate 2 in the area of the bottom 13.
[0059] The non-stick coating 1 is for example a PTFE (PolyTetraFluoroEthylene; in other words, a PTFE-type fluorinated resin-based coating), or a ceramic-type coating, or a sol-gel-type coating (in other words, a coating synthesized by sol-gel method). The non-stick coating 1 may be single-layer or multi-layer. The non-stick coating 1 may also be a silicone resin or silicone-polyester resin-based coating(s).
[0060] The protective coating 5 is for example a PTFE type coating (in other words, a fluororesin-based coating of the PTFE type), or an enamel type coating, or a lacquer type coating, or a ceramic type coating, or a sol-gel type coating (in other words, a coating synthesized by sol-gel method). The protective coating 5 can be single-layer or multi-layer. The protective coating 5 can also be a coating(s) based on silicone resin or silicone-polyester resin.
[0061] Table 1 summarizes the characteristics of expanded metal insert samples #1 to #4 3 which were inserted into 28 cm diameter and 2.4 mm thick aluminum alloy metal substrates 2 to obtain cooking supports 10 Ref.1 to Ref.4.

[0066] The 4 cooking supports 10 Ref.1 to Ref.4 tested are lighter than conventional cooking supports comprising an insert made of ferromagnetic material in the form of a perforated plate, due to the smaller quantity of material used to produce the expanded metal insert 3, as well as due to the reduced thickness of the metal substrate 2.
[0067] The 4 cooking supports 10 Ref.1 to Ref.4 tested have satisfactory resistance to deformation, although the thickness of the metal substrate 2 is thinner than that usually used with perforated plate type ferromagnetic inserts, due to the lower mechanical strength of the expanded metal insert 3 compared to a perforated plate. This results in less sensitivity of the cooking supports 10 to deformations due to the differential expansion of the materials of the metal substrate 2 and the expanded metal insert 3. The expanded metal insert 3 also requires a lower insertion force in the metal substrate 2 than the force required to implant a perforated plate in said metal substrate 2, which also makes it easier to reduce the thickness of the metal substrate 2.
[0068] Figures 6 and 7 illustrate a metal cooking support 100 having a heating face 110. The metal cooking support 100 may in particular be formed by the metal cooking support 10 illustrated in Figures 1 and 4 or by the metal cooking support 10 illustrated in the. The metal cooking support 100 comprises a side wall 123 rising around a bottom 122 of the heating face 110 to form a cooking container 124. Alternatively, the metal cooking support 100 does not necessarily form a cooking container 124. The metal cooking support 100 may in particular form a cooking plate.
[0069] Illustrates a cooking article 140 comprising a metal cooking support 100 forming the cooking container 124 and a gripping member 150 mounted on the cooking container 124. In the embodiment illustrated in the, the gripping member 150 is fixed to the cooking container 124 by at least one rivet 151. For this purpose, the rivet 151 is mounted in a hole provided in a side wall 123 of the cooking container. If desired, several rivets 151 may be used to fix the gripping member 150 to the cooking container 124. Preferably, between two and four rivets 151 are used to fix the gripping member 150 to the cooking container 124. Alternatively, the gripping member 150 could be fixed to the side wall 123 by welding or by screwing onto a stud welded to the side wall 123.If desired, another gripping member can be fixed to the side wall 123 of the cooking container 124 by means of at least one other rivet, by welding or by screwing onto a stud welded to the side wall 123.
[0070] The illustrates an electric cooking appliance 160 comprising a metal cooking support 100 associated with an induction heating zone 170. The metal cooking support 100 forming the cooking container 124 is arranged in a heating base 175 comprising the induction heating zone 170. The bottom 122 rests on the induction heating zone 170. If desired, the cooking container 124 can comprise at least one gripping member 155. In the exemplary embodiment illustrated in the, the cooking container 124 comprises two opposite gripping members 155. The or each gripping member 155 is fixed to the cooking container 124 by at least one rivet 156. For this purpose, the rivet 156 is mounted in a hole provided in the side wall 123. If desired, several rivets 156 can be used to fix the or each gripping member 155 to the cooking container 124.Preferably between two and four rivets 156 are used to fix the or each gripping member 155 to the cooking vessel 124. Alternatively the or at least one of the gripping members 155 could be fixed to the side wall 123 by welding or by screwing onto a stud welded to the side wall 123.
[0071] As a variant, the metal cooking support 10 does not necessarily include a non-stick coating 1 forming a cooking surface 14 of the cooking face 11, and a protective coating 5 forming a heating surface 15 of the heating face 12.
[0072] As a variant, the expanded metal insert 3 does not necessarily have a central opening 38.
[0073] As a variant, the expanded metal insert 3 does not necessarily have several non-central openings 32 in its central portion. The expanded metal insert 3 may in particular have in its central portion at least one non-central opening 32 having an opening section at least equal to twice the inter-strand opening diameter OB, preferably at least equal to three times the inter-strand opening diameter OB, more preferably at least equal to four times the inter-strand opening diameter OB, more preferably at least equal to five times the inter-strand opening diameter OB. The expanded metal insert 3 may also be devoid of non-central openings.
[0074] Various modifications and / or improvements obvious to those skilled in the art may be made to the exemplary embodiments of the invention described in the present description without departing from the scope of the invention defined by the appended claims.
