AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The recycling of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) via pyrolysis to produce high-purity methyl methacrylate is challenging due to the presence of impurities, which require energy-intensive distillation processes with high operational and capital costs.

Method used

A method involving pyrolysis of PMMA followed by at least one distillation step and at least one melt crystallization step to separate and remove impurities, achieving a methyl methacrylate composition with 99.8% purity and minimal impurities.

Benefits of technology

The method achieves high-purity methyl methacrylate with a yield of over 90% while significantly reducing operational and capital expenditures, making it suitable for producing high-quality PMMA for various applications.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for preparing a purified methyl methacrylate composition from a crude composition containing methyl methacrylate comprising the steps of: a) providing as crude composition a pyrolyzed composition obtained by pyrolysis of a polymethyl methacrylate composition, b) subjecting the pyrolyzed composition to at least one distillation step so as to obtain a methyl methacrylate enriched composition and c) then subjecting the methyl methacrylate enriched composition to at least one melt crystallization step so as to obtain the purified methyl methacrylate composition.
