[0028] Hair lightening or highlighting has been around for centuries, but the methods of applying bleaching or lightening solutions to hair have changed generally. For example, major changes have typically involved a shift from cap-based coloring techniques to foils, which are discarded after use. Removing each foil can be time-consuming, and may cause the user / hairdresser to come into contact with the bleaching / lightening solution, and after the foils are removed, they are thrown away.
[0029] The biodegradable hair foils of the invention provide advantages over current foils in that the foils of the invention are made of a biodegradable material for environmentally friendly applications. Due to the biodegradability, the hair foils of the invention do not have to be removed from the hair, but can be rinsed directly from the hair at the same time as the bleaching / lightening solution is rinsed out, thereby saving time and mitigating waste in the environment. Preferably, the biodegradable hair foils are composed of a water-soluble synthetic polymer, such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH, PVA or PVA1), a cellulose and starch fiber and / or combinations thereof. In one embodiment, the biodegradable capillary sheet material is poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH, PVA, or PVA1), cellulose, starch, or combinations thereof. The main body may be formed from a single sheet, or may be formed from one or more sheets or plies of thin biodegradable material.
[0030] The biodegradable capillary sheet or sheets may be made of one or more of recyclable materials, compostable materials, sustainable materials, biodegradable materials, a plant-derived material, and the like that are water-soluble. Biodegradable polymers, biodegradable polyesters, biodegradable polyurethanes, biodegradable starches, biodegradable cellulosic materials, biodegradable aliphatic polyesters, and the like are also contemplated. Other contemplated materials include water-soluble materials composed of bamboo or wood pulp or bagasse and / or thin films that are bound by means of starch and readily dissolve in water. In one embodiment, the biodegradable sheets are made of non-woven polyvinyl alcohol, optionally impregnated with active ingredients. These active ingredients may include hair coloring agents, with tints and / or pigments, hair lightening / bleaching agents and / or hair treatment agents.
[0031] Undulations or textures are preferably integrated on the surface and / or body of the biodegradable hair sheets of the invention to secure the sheets in place while they are applied to the hair during lightening or highlighting. The texture may be formed through heat or mechanical processes. A texture may be formed by stamping, embossing, needling, coating, and / or thermal bonding where fibers of the sheet are formed with different thickness to form textures or patterns. The texture may be formed as a thin texture or a formed sheet attached to the first surface of the main body. The texture facilitates saturation of the hair dye / coloring agent and / or lightening / bleaching agents around the hair while also helping to secure the hair sheet to the hair when in the closed configuration.Advantageously, when the lightening or highlighting application is complete, the user or hairdresser can simply rinse the hair with the biodegradable sheets and the applied hair lightening agent directly into a sink or wastewater tank.
[0032] [Fig.l] illustrates a top plan view of one embodiment of the biodegradable capillary sheet, shown generally with reference numeral 10. [Fig.2] illustrates the biodegradable capillary sheet of [Fig.l] folded or rolled into a closed configuration and secured by means of fasteners, here shown in the form of foldable tabs. [Fig.3] illustrates one use of the biodegradable capillary sheet of [Fig.l].
[0033] Referring to Figures 1 to 3, the biodegradable hair sheet 10 is formed with a planar main body 11 with a first surface 12, which is the surface adapted to engage with a section of hair, and a second surface 13, or ex surface rear interior. The first surface 12 has a texture 14 thereon which may be formed as a separate biodegradable foil layer, or from one or more stamped, raised, or embossed portions on the first surface, or from a coating on the first surface 12. The texture 14 is here shown formed as a plurality of alternating elongated ridges 14a and valleys 14b. The texture 14 may be formed in a plethora of dots, shapes, and / or designs or patterns. When the texture 14 is a coating, preferably the coating is sprayed onto the first surface 12 and is formed of an inert biodegradable friction material, such as, but not limited to, starch, cellulose, PVA, or a combination thereof.
[0034] The texture 14 is preferably substantially integrated into / located on and / or covers the first surface 12 of the main body 11 such that the first surface 12 provides a large surface area of texture 14. The texture 14 on the first surface 12 provides friction against the hair strands of the selected hair portion, while providing ease of application of the hair coloring and / or bleaching agent (lightening agent) to the hair and elongated valleys and ridges 14b, 14a facilitate hair retention and distribution of the agent to the hair strands for improved application. After application of the hair coloring and / or bleaching / lightening agent to the hair, the biodegradable hair sheet 10 is folded or rolled up as demonstrated in Figures 2 and 3.

The main body 11 may be formed as a single-ply sheet, or alternatively formed by one or more thin sheets. The structure of the main body 11 remains when an application of the hair coloring and / or hair lightening agent or a hair treatment agent is applied to the hair. It is noted that the sheet may have one or more hair treatment agents integrated therein, such as conditioning agents. The biodegradable hair sheet of the invention may be used for a plethora of hair applications and / or treatments, including coloring, dyeing, lightening, conditioning, balayage, hair highlighting and / or hair painting. The main body 11 may have fold or separation lines and / or perforations for ease of folding, and / or tearing to adjust the length of the main body / sheet and make the sheet longer and / or shorter.
[0038] Application of the developer may be by brush or paint application, and / or spray application. Where the sheet has one or more coloring agents and / or hair lightening agents incorporated therein, the agent may be spray coated onto the top texture / first surface of the main sheet, and / or incorporated into the fibers forming the sheet, such as by saturating the fibers in a vat, followed by sheet formation for interstitial bonding of the coloring agent or bleaching agent into the sheet fibers. The hair coloring agents may include direct dyes, pigment, and / or oxidative dyes. The developer may be brushed onto the hair section and the sheet and / or sprayed onto the hair section and / or the sheet. It is noted that in this embodiment, the sheet may be slightly thicker and / or include a second sheet or thin film barrier layer such that the sheet does not dissolve, or dissolves only minimally, with spray application of the developer, and ultimately dissolves during rinsing with significant amounts of water.
[0039] In the embodiment shown, the fastener 20 comprises one or more foldable tabs 21 designed to lock the main body 11 in place when the main body 11 is in the closed configuration during application of the hair coloring and / or bleaching and / or lightening agent, as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
