Description

Title of the invention: COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS FOR removing hair color technical field

[0001] This disclosure relates to compositions and processes for removing color from keratinous fibers, such as hair. BACKGROUND

[0002] Consumers often wish to change their hair color. For example, as a person ages, the hair follicle loses its natural pigment, resulting in gray, silver, or white hair. It is common for consumers to dye their gray hair, for example, to match their natural color. Similarly, consumers may want to change their hair color from their natural color. For example, consumers often wish to lighten or darken their hair color.

[0003] However, the process of changing hair color is complex, particularly when permanent (oxidative) hair dyes are used. In some cases, the process requires that the natural pigment (melanin) in the hair fiber be destroyed before adding the dye molecules of the desired color. This process is generally used when an individual wishes to change their hair color to a shade lighter than their natural color, by dissolving the melanin with an oxidizing agent before the oxidative dye molecules penetrate the hair, where they achieve the target shade by undergoing a chemical reaction with the oxidizing agent. If a person wishes to change their hair color to a shade darker than their natural shade, it may not be necessary to destroy the melanin in the hair, but the oxidative dye must still undergo a reaction with an oxidizing agent to achieve the target shade.

[0004] However, if a person who has previously changed the color of their hair with a first oxidative dye wishes to change the color of their previously colored hair to obtain a second color or shade, the first oxidative dye, which cannot be removed by washing, must be neutralized so that it no longer transmits the first color to the hair fiber. Although there are known methods for removing the first hair color by neutralizing (reducing) the first molecules of oxidative dye, these methods are not completely satisfactory because the first molecules of oxidative dye can reoxidize, thus interfering with the consumer's ability to obtain the desired second color or shade. Other known methods for removing the The first hair colorings used oxidizing agents, but these compositions are aggressive and cause damage to the hair, making it weak, brittle and giving it an unhealthy appearance.

[0005] It has now been discovered, surprisingly, that a synergistic combination of components unexpectedly removes oxidative hair dyes in a way that also prevents the dyes from reoxidizing. The combination of components can therefore be used to modify the overall hair color by removing all or almost all of the previously applied color, or to remove only certain colors or shades, in order to vary the hair color or tone without removing all the color (for example, to change the hair color to a warmer or cooler tone). [0078] The total quantity of auxiliary agents, if present, is typically in the range of about 0.01% to about 15%, relative to the total weight of the composition. For example, in some embodiments, the individual quantities of each component or the total quantity of components may range from approximately 0.1% to approximately 10%, from approximately 0.1% to approximately 8%, from approximately 0.1% to approximately 5%, from approximately 0.1% to approximately 4%, from approximately 0.1% to approximately 3%, from approximately 0.1% to approximately 2%, from approximately 0.25% to approximately 10%, from approximately 0.25% to approximately 8%, approximately 0.25% to approximately 5%, approximately 0.25% to approximately 4%, approximately 0.25% to approximately 3%, approximately 0.25% to approximately 2%, approximately 0.5% to approximately 10%, approximately 0.5% to approximately 8%, approximately 0.5% to approximately 5%, approximately 0.5% to approximately 4%, approximately 0.5% to approximately 3%, approximately 0.5% to approximately 2%, approximately 0.75% to approximately 10%, approximately 0.75% to approximately 8%, approximately 0.75% to about 5%, about 0.75% to about 4%, about 0.75% to about 3%, or about 0.75% to about 2% by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition.

[0079] In some embodiments, the compositions may be free of sulfites, bisulfites, metabisulfites, persulfates, peroxides and / or ammonia. In still other embodiments, the compositions may be essentially free from sulfites, bisulfites, metabisulfites, persulfates, peroxides and / or ammonia, for example, may comprise less than 5%, less than 4.5%, less than 4%, less than 3.5%, less than 3%, less than 2.5%, less than 2%, less than 1.5%, less than 1.25%, less than 1%, less than 0.75%, less than 0.5%, less than 0.4%, less than 0.3%, less than 0.2%, less than 0.1%, less than 0.05% or less than 0.01% of a total amount of sulfites, bisulfites, metabisulfites, persulfates, peroxides or ammonia, or of a total amount of any combination of two or more of these.

[0080] The compositions can be in any suitable form. For example, the compositions can be a liquid, a gel, a cream-gel, a cream, a serum, etc. Advantageously, the compositions can be used as a one-part hair color removal composition, as opposed to known hair color removal systems that require the application of several compositions to effectively remove hair color.

[0081] The pH of the composition is generally acidic, namely: below 7, such as below about 6, below about 5 or below about 4. For example, compositions according to the disclosure may have a pH ranging from about 1 to about 6, such as from about 2 to about 5. In some embodiments, the compositions have a pH ranging from about 2.5 to about 5, from about 2.75 to about 4.75, or from about 3 to about 4.5. II. PROCESSES

[0082] The disclosure further relates to methods for removing color from keratin fibers, particularly from hair that has been previously dyed, such as with an oxidative dye. The methods include applying a composition according to the disclosure to the keratin fibers, optionally leaving the composition on the keratin fibers for a period of time (a "resting period," "resting period," or "application period"), and optionally rinsing the composition from the keratin fibers. Thus, the methods may include a two-step process, which is simpler and more efficient than known three-step or more-step processes where multiple compositions are applied to the hair for color removal before rinsing.

[0083] The appropriate exposure time will be determined according to the color to be removed, and in various embodiments may last up to approximately 1 minute, up to about 2 minutes, up to about 5 minutes, up to about 10 minutes, up to about 20 minutes, up to about 30 minutes, up to about 45 minutes, up to about 1 hour, up to about 2 hours, etc., such as from about 1 minute to about 60 minutes, from about 2 minutes to about 45 minutes, from about 5 minutes to about 40 minutes, or from about 10 minutes to about 30 minutes.

[0084] Surprisingly, the compositions and processes according to the disclosure effectively remove the color imparted to hair by previously applied oxidative dyes without using sulfites, bisulfites, metabisulfites, persulfates, peroxides, and / or ammonia, and can prevent or substantially prevent oxidative dyes from reoxidizing so that the color does not return. Thus, in at least some embodiments, the compositions are free or substantially free of sulfites, bisulfites, metabisulfites, persulfates, peroxides, and / or ammonia, and / or the processes include only compositions that are free or substantially free of sulfites, bisulfites, metabisulfites, persulfates, peroxides, and / or ammonia. This advantage has been remarkably observed on hair even several months after the original color has been removed with compositions and processes as disclosed, and therefore the removal of the color is considered permanent, which is a benefit not obtained with traditional hair color removal compositions that use reducing agents.

[0085] In addition, the synergistic combination of components in the compositions and processes according to the disclosure also remarkably reduces or eliminates the odor generally encountered with hair color removal compositions and processes.

[0086] After describing in detail the numerous embodiments of the present invention, it will become apparent that modifications and variations are possible without departing from the scope of the disclosure defined in the appended claims. Furthermore, it should be noted that all the examples in this disclosure, while illustrating numerous embodiments of the disclosure, are provided by way of non-limiting examples and should therefore not be considered as limiting the various aspects thus illustrated. It should be understood that all definitions in this document are provided solely for the purposes of this disclosure.

[0087] As used herein, the terms "comprising", "having" and "including" (or "comprehension", "having" and "include") are used in their open, non-limiting sense.

[0088] In this application, the expressions "one or more" and "at least one" are interchangeable and expressly include individual components as well as mixtures / combinations. Similarly, the expression "a salt of it" also refers to "salts of it." Thus, when the disclosure refers to "at least one," the expression "a salt of it" also refers to "salts of it." less one element chosen from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt of these, or mixtures of these,” it indicates that one or more of A, B, C, D and F may be included, one or more of a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E and a salt of F may be included, or a mixture of any two of A, B, C, D, E, F, one or more salts of A, one or more salts of B, one or more salts of C, one or more salts of D, one or more salts of E and one or more salts of F may be included.

[0089] The expression "and / or" should be understood as including both conjunctive and disjunctive clauses. For example, "water and / or non-aqueous solvents" means "water and non-aqueous solvents" as well as "water or non-aqueous solvents", and expressly covers cases of either.

[0090] As used herein, the expressions "and mixtures thereof," "and a mixture of these," "and a combination of these," "or mixtures of these," "or a mixture of these," "or combinations of these," and "or a combination of these" are used interchangeably to indicate that the list of components immediately preceding the phrase, such as "A, B, C, D, or mixtures of these," means that the component(s) can / may be chosen from A, B, C, D, from A + B, from A + B + C, from A + D, from A + C + D, etc., without limitation on the variations thereof. Thus, the components may be used individually or in any combination thereof.

[0091] For the purposes of this disclosure, it should be noted that, for the sake of brevity, some of the quantitative expressions given herein are not qualified with the term "approximately". It is understood that, whether the term "approximately" is used explicitly or implicitly, each quantity given herein is intended to refer to the actual value given, and is also intended to refer to the approximation of that value given that would be reasonably deduced by a person skilled in the art, including approximations due to experimental and / or measurement conditions for that value.

[0092] All ranges and quantities stated herein are intended to include subranges and quantities using any disclosed point as a bound, and all bounds are intended to be inclusive unless expressly stated otherwise. Thus, a range of "1% to 10%, such as 2% to 8%, such as 3% to 5%" is intended to encompass ranges of "1% to 8%", "1% to 5%", "2% to 10%", and so on. All numbers, quantities, ranges, etc., are intended to be modified by the term "approximately", whether or not expressly stated, unless expressly stated otherwise. Similarly, a given range of "approximately 1% to 10%" is intended to have its bounds of both 1% and 10% modified by the term "approximately". The term "approximately" is used in this document to indicate a difference of up to + / - 10% from the The indicated number, such as + / - 9%, + / - 8%, + / - 7%, + / - 6%, + / - 5%, + / - 4%, + / - 3%, + / - 2%, or + / - 1%. Similarly, all range boundaries are understood to be disclosed individually, such that, for example, a range of 1:2 to 2:1 is understood to disclose a ratio of 1:2 to 2:1.

[0093] As used here, if a component is described as being present "in an amount less than or equal to" a certain amount, it is expected that this component is in fact present in the composition, namely, present in an amount greater than 0%.

[0094] All quantities and ratios indicated herein are given on the basis of the total weight of the composition, unless otherwise stated. Unless otherwise stated, all percentages indicated herein are by weight of active ingredient.

[0095] As used herein, the expression "applying a composition to keratinous fibers," and its variations, is intended to denote the contact of keratinous fibers, such as hair, with at least one of the compositions of the disclosure, in any manner whatsoever. It may also mean the contact of keratinous fibers with an effective amount of the composition.

[0096] In this document, the term "salts" throughout the disclosure may include salts containing a counterion such as an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, or an ammonium counterion. This list of counterions, however, is not exhaustive. Salts also include a dissociated form of a compound, for example, in an aqueous solution.

[0097] As used in this document, the expressions "substantially free" or "essentially free" mean that the specific material may be present in small amounts that do not significantly affect the basic and novel characteristics of the compositions as disclosed. For example, there may be less than 2% by weight of a specific material added to a composition, relative to the total weight of the compositions (provided that an amount less than 2% by weight does not significantly affect the basic and novel characteristics of the compositions as disclosed). Similarly, the compositions may include less than 2%, less than 1.5%, less than 1%, less than 0.5%, less than 0.1%, less than 0.05%, or less than 0.01%, or none of the specified materials. All components positively presented in this disclosure may be negatively excluded from the claims; for example, a claimed composition may be "free," "substantially free" (or "significantly free") of one or more components that are positively presented in this disclosure. The term "substantially free" or "essentially free" as used here may also mean that the specific material is not. added to the composition, but it may still be present in a raw material included in the composition.

[0098] As used herein, the terms “treat,” “treated,” “treatment,” and variations thereof are not intended to be limiting, but rather are intended to simply indicate that one or more compositions is / are applied to the hair and possibly removed from the hair. For example, hair that is “treated” with a composition according to the disclosure may have had the composition applied, and / or may have had the composition applied and removed, for example, by rinsing or towel drying. As another example, hair that is “treated” with a composition according to the disclosure may have had the composition applied, and / or may have had the composition applied and rinsed.

[0099] For the purposes of this disclosure, the terms "color removal," "hair color removal," and variations thereof should be understood as referring to the removal of artificial hair color resulting from previously applied oxidative dyes. It should be understood that color removal may include the removal of all color, or it may include the removal of various color tones. Therefore, in some embodiments, an overall lightening of hair color will be observed (e.g., higher AE), whereas in other embodiments, even if the overall color change is not considered significant, a variation of one or more of the L*, a*, or b* values will be observed.

[0100] The following examples are intended to illustrate embodiments of this disclosure but are not intended to be limiting. It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various modifications and variations can be made to the compositions and processes of the invention without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. EXAMPLES

[0101] The following examples are intended to be non-limiting and explanatory only. In the Examples, unless otherwise indicated, quantities are expressed as a percentage by weight (% by weight) of active substances, relative to the total weight of the composition.

[0102] In these examples, the hair color change is evaluated using the CIE L* a* b* system, with Colorshot MS, where the change is determined by evaluating the hair color after treatment (L*2, a*2, b*2) against the hair color before treatment (L*ba*bb*i). The color change (AE) is defined by:

[0103] In this system, the three parameters represent, respectively, color intensity (L*), the green / red color axis (a*), and the blue / yellow color axis (b*). The higher the value of L*, the lighter the color; the higher the value of a*, the redder the color; and the higher the value of b*, the yellower the color. The greater the value of AE, the greater the difference in color between the treated hair and the hair before treatment. Example 1 - Compositions

[0104] Compositions 1A-1E according to disclosure and comparative composition Cl were prepared as shown in Table 1. The pH of each composition was approximately 3.5.

[0106] Example 2 - Evaluation of color removal

[0107] Six strands of permed hair, ~90% grey hair, were coloured with a commercially available oxidative hair dye composition. The oxidative hair dye composition was mixed in a 1:1 ratio with 20V hydrogen peroxide developer to form a hair dye mixture, and the hair dye mixture was applied to the strands at a rate of approximately 3 grams per gram of hair. The strands were left at room temperature for approximately 35 minutes, rinsed, shampooed with a commercial shampoo, rinsed again, and left to air dry.

[0108] Once the strands were dry, they were treated as follows. Each of the compositions 1A-1D and Cl was applied to separate the strands at a rate of approximately 2 grams per gram of hair. The strands were left to rest for 30 minutes at 33°C. The strands were then rinsed for approximately 30 seconds, shampooed with a commercial shampoo, rinsed, shampooed again, rinsed again, and then blow-dried.

[0109] A strand colored with the hair dye mixture was not treated with a color-removing composition and was used as a control.

[0110] The color of each of the strands was then evaluated with the CIE L* a* b* system, as described above.

[0111] First, the color of each strand was evaluated immediately after the strands were treated as described above and dried (time = To), in order to assess the effectiveness of the color removal. Table 2A shows the values L*, a*, b* and AE at To.

[0112] [Tables 2 A] L* a* b* AE L*!, a*!, b*! CONTROL 5.90 1.64 0.20 - L*2, a*2, b*2 IA 49.19 8.92 25.10 50.47 IB 43.90 8.25 24.68 45.68 IC 36.82 7.86 17.11 35.78 1D 28.66 8.53 9.68 25.60 Cl 7.53 0.04 0.74 2.35

[0113] Table 2A demonstrates that the compositions according to the disclosure are surprisingly more effective at removing hair color compared to the compositions not in accordance with the disclosure, as shown by the significantly higher AE values for strands treated with compositions 1A-1D compared to the strand treated with composition CL. As a difference in AE of ~2 is visible to the naked eye, these results are significant.

[0114] The color of the strands treated with compositions 1A-1C and Cl was re-evaluated after one week (time = T7) to assess the durability of the color removal. Table 2B shows the values L*, a*, b*, and AE at T7.

[0115] [Tables2B] L* a* b* AE L*!, a*!, b*! CONTROL 5.90 1.64 0.20 - L*2, a*2, b*2 IA 46.78 8.02 23.18 47.33 IB 44.68 7.66 23.35 45.56 IC 39.92 7.11 21.13 40.32 Cl 7.53 0.04 0.74 2.35

[0116] Although the L*, a*, b* and AE values for the strands treated with compositions 1A-1C are slightly higher or lower in Table 2B than in Table 2A, these differences are considered to fall within an acceptable range. Visually, there was no color difference between the strands at T7 and T0.

[0117] Tables 2A and 2B therefore demonstrate that color removal with compositions according to the disclosure is not only very effective, but also that the color removal lasts for at least one week. Furthermore, it was observed that even after several months, the strands treated with compositions 1A-1D appeared to visually retain the same color, demonstrating that color re-oxidation does not occur.

[0118] Example 3 - Compositions including amines

[0119] Compositions 3A-3C according to the disclosure were prepared as shown in Table 3. The pH of each composition was approximately 3.5.

[0120] [Tables3] 3A 3B 3C Glycolic acid 7.0 7.0 7.0 Glycine 5.0 5.0 5.0 Monoethanolamine 5.7 Triethanolamine 15 Aminomethylpropanol 8.0 Water Qs per 100 Qs per 100 Qs per 100

[0121] Example 4 - Evaluation of color removal

[0122] Three strands of virgin hair, ~90% grey hair, and four strands of permed hair, ~90% grey hair (7 strands in total) were coloured Using a commercially available oxidative hair dye, the hair was mixed in a 1:1 ratio with 20V hydrogen peroxide developer to form a hair dye mixture. This mixture was then applied to the hair strands at a rate of approximately 3 grams per gram of hair. The strands were left at room temperature for about 35 minutes, rinsed, shampooed with a commercial shampoo, rinsed again, and allowed to air dry.

[0123] Once the strands were dry, they were treated as follows. Each of compositions 3B and 3C was applied to separate virgin strands, and each of compositions 3A-3C was applied to separate permed strands, at a rate of approximately 2 grams per gram of hair, so that the color-removing capacity of each composition could be evaluated both on virgin hair colored with the hair dye mixture and on permed hair colored with the hair dye mixture. The strands were left to rest for 30 minutes at 33°C. The strands were then rinsed for approximately 30 seconds, shampooed with a commercial shampoo, rinsed, shampooed again, rinsed again, and then blow-dried.

[0124] A virgin strand and a permed strand colored with the hair dye mixture but not treated with a color removal composition were used as controls.

[0125] The color of each strand was evaluated using the CIE L* a* b* system immediately after the strands were treated as described above and dried, in order to assess the effectiveness of the color removal. Tables 4A-4B show the L*, a*, b*, and AE values for virgin (Table 4A) and permed (Table 4B) strands.

[0128] The data in Tables 4A-4B show that the addition of various amines can improve the color-removing properties of reducing agents according to disclosure, particularly on hair that has been previously chemically treated. Furthermore, monoethanolamine surprisingly offers the greatest improvement in color removal, even compared to other amine compounds.

[0129] Example 5 - Additional compositions

[0130] Compositions 5A-5D according to the disclosure can be prepared as shown in Table 5, and are also intended to offer synergistic hair colour removal benefits.

[0131] [Tables5] 5A 5B 5C 5D Thioglycolic acid 15 Thiolactic acid 9 Glyoxylic acid 3 Glutaric acid 12 Proline 1 4 Betaine 5 6 Arginine 5 Hydroxypropyl guar 1 0.5 1.5 2 Sodium lauroyl sulfate 2 2.5 1.5 1 Additives (pH adjuster, preservative, per fume) <3 < 3 <3 < 3 Solvent Qs per 100 Qs per 100 Qs per 100 Qs per 100

[0132] The above examples confirm that the compositions and processes according to the disclosure enhance the removal of hair color in a surprising and unexpected way, compared to the compositions and processes not in accordance with the disclosure.
