Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: Control of functions of a motor vehicle
[0001] The present invention belongs to the field of functions implemented in a motor vehicle, in particular functions based on data from an interior camera.
[0002] It is particularly advantageous when the vehicle implements a driver attention monitoring function, also called DAA for “Driver Attention Alert” in English.
[0003] The term “vehicle” means any type of vehicle such as a private, utility or heavy goods vehicle.
[0004] Driving assistance systems, such as AD AS for example, for “Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems” in English, make it possible to assist the driver of the vehicle or even to fully control certain parameters of the vehicle's driving, such as the longitudinal trajectory, the speed in particular, and the lateral trajectory, turning or changing lanes in particular.
[0005] Furthermore, a vehicle module may implement safety functions to enhance the safety associated with driving. In particular, when the vehicle is driven manually, in particular for the aforementioned autonomy levels 1 and 2, the DAA function makes it possible, by means of an interior camera capable of capturing images of the driver, to detect whether the driver is attentive or not, and / or to detect a level of driver fatigue.
[0006] New regulatory constraints tend to impose the DAA function in motor vehicles.
[0007] The DAA function can be: - in an activated state; - faulty, in particular when a fault is detected on the indoor camera or in the operation of the module which implements the function; and / or - in a deactivated state, following a command to stop the function by the driver, and / or because the vehicle is stationary for example.
[0008] Indicator lights are used to indicate the status of the DAA function on a human-machine interface of the vehicle, in particular on the so-called “digital handset” interface, located behind the steering wheel of the vehicle.
[0009] For example, a first indicator light may indicate that the DAA function is enabled, and active, i.e., it is operational. At least one second indicator light may indicate: - that the function is activated but not active, for example because the camera is obstructed or the driver is wearing a scarf or mask; - that the function is enabled but the function is faulty, due to a fault in the camera or the module that performs the DAA function; and / or - that the function is disabled.
[0010] Additionally, when the function is enabled and active: - luminous information can be displayed in the form of a widget on the digital instrument panel, to indicate a level of driver attention and / or a level of driver fatigue; - an alert can be displayed on the digital instrument panel, in the form of a light and / or a message, possibly supplemented by an audible alert, in the event of driver fatigue or distraction.
[0011] The development of motor vehicles tends to include more and more functions in the motor vehicle, whether driving assistance functions, safety functions, but also infotainment functions.
[0012] The development of these functions, however, requires integrating more and more sensors and / or interfaces into the vehicle, which poses problems of vehicle size, weight, but also costs.
[0013] There is thus a need to allow the development of new functions in a vehicle, without adding new sensors and / or new interfaces in the vehicle.
[0014] The present invention improves the situation.
[0015] To this end, a first aspect of the invention relates to a method for controlling at least one function implemented in a motor vehicle, comprising the following steps: - displaying a pictogram on a component of a human-machine interface of the vehicle, the pictogram indicating information relating to a first function, said first function being a driver attention monitoring function based on data from an interior camera of the vehicle; - detection of user input on said pictogram displayed on the human-machine interface component; - activation of a second function of the vehicle, said second function being distinct from the first function, depending on the user input.
[0016] Thus, the second function can be activated from a user input on a pictogram relating to a first function, distinct from the second function. The first and second functions thus share the pictogram, which makes it possible both to provide information relating to the first function, but also to activate the second function. It is thus made possible to multiply the functions in the motor vehicle without adding graphical or hardware interface elements in the human-machine interface of the vehicle.
[0017] According to embodiments, the vehicle human-machine interface component may be a touchscreen centrally positioned in a dashboard of the vehicle or above a dashboard of the vehicle.
[0018] Since such touch screens are generally present in most current motor vehicles, the implementation of the invention does not require the addition of an additional human-machine interface component, which limits its costs and the associated size.
[0019] According to embodiments, the pictogram can indicate an activation state of the first function.
[0020] The first and second functions thus share the pictogram, which makes it possible both to provide information relating to the first function, but also to activate the second function. The activation state of the first function can indicate the availability of the second function, when the first and second functions both use the interior camera.
[0021] According to embodiments, the second function can be activated according to a type of user input and / or descriptive information of a current situation of the vehicle.
[0022] Thus, the second function may only be activatable in certain vehicle situations, for example depending on the driving situation of the vehicle, and / or depending on a user input of a given type. This prevents any inadvertent input leading to the triggering of a second function which could be dangerous depending on the current vehicle situation. The safety associated with the activation of the second function is thus improved.
[0023] In addition, the second function can be selected from several possible second functions, depending on a type of user input and / or depending on the descriptive information of the current situation of the vehicle.
[0024] It is thus made possible to control the activation of several second functions from the same pictogram, which makes it possible to multiply the number of vehicle functions without inducing additional graphic elements on the human-machine interface.
[0025] Further in addition, the second possible functions may include any combination of the following functions, or all of the following functions: - an image capture function by the vehicle's interior camera, activation of the image capture function comprising the acquisition of an image and the storage of the acquired image in a vehicle memory accessible by the human-machine interface; - a function for viewing an image stored in the motor vehicle; - a vehicle interior monitoring function, said monitoring function interior monitoring being activated if the vehicle is stationary when receiving user input, and implemented when the vehicle is locked.
[0026] It is thus possible to activate functions of different natures, infotainment or security, from the same pictogram.
[0027] Alternatively, the second function may be one of the following functions: - an image capture function by the vehicle's interior camera, activation of the image capture function comprising the acquisition of an image and the storage of the acquired image in a vehicle memory accessible by the human-machine interface; - a function for viewing an image stored in the motor vehicle; - a vehicle interior monitoring function, said interior monitoring function being activated if the vehicle is stationary when receiving the user input, and implemented when the vehicle is locked.
[0028] Thus, only one second function is controllable via the pictogram, which makes it easier for the user to understand and avoids handling errors. The image capture function and the vehicle interior monitoring function allow the same hardware component to be used as the first function, namely the interior camera: it is then possible to use such an interior camera for several functions and not just for the DAA function, which makes its installation in a vehicle more advantageous.
[0029] In addition or as a variant, the activation of the image capture function may comprise the determination of a presence of at least one passenger, an adaptation of a field of vision of the interior camera as a function of the determination of the presence of said at least one passenger, and an image acquisition after adaptation of the field of vision of the interior camera.
[0030] Thus, the image capture function is improved in an automated and transparent manner for the user.
[0031] A second aspect of the invention relates to a computer program comprising instructions for implementing the method according to the first aspect of the invention, when these instructions are executed by a processor.
[0032] A third aspect of the invention relates to a control module for at least one function implemented in a motor vehicle, comprising a processor configured to: - controlling a display of a pictogram on a component of a human-machine interface of the vehicle, the pictogram indicating information relating to a first function, said first function being a driver attention monitoring function based on data from an interior camera of the vehicle; - detect user input on said pictogram displayed on the component of the human-machine interface; - activating a second function of the vehicle, said second function being distinct from the first function, based on user input.
[0033] Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will appear on examining the detailed description below, and the appended drawings in which:
[0034] [Fig-1] illustrates a motor vehicle according to embodiments of the invention;
[0035] [Fig.2] represents a display of a screen of a human-machine interface of a motor vehicle according to embodiments of the invention;
[0036] [Fig.3] is a diagram illustrating the steps of activating a vehicle function according to embodiments of the invention;
[0037] [Fig.4] illustrates the structure of a control device according to embodiments of the invention.
[0038] [Fig.l] shows a vehicle 100, according to one embodiment of the invention.
[0039] The vehicle 100 comprises a control device 101. The control device 101 may be an ECU type element, for “Electronic Control Unit” in English, in charge of the centralized control of the vehicle 100. The control device 101 may comprise several modules in charge of piloting or communicating with different elements of the motor vehicle.
[0040] Alternatively, the control device 101 is dedicated to the implementation of the method described below, and is not responsible for other functionalities of the vehicle 100.
[0041] The vehicle 100 may optionally comprise a module 102 capable of performing the DAA function described above, based on data from a camera 106 capable of acquiring images of the interior of the vehicle, in particular of the driver. The field of vision of the camera 106 includes at least the driver, but may also include one or more passengers according to embodiments of the invention.
[0042] The module 102 may for example be a driving assistance module 102, also called AD AS, for “Advanced Driver Assistance Systems” in English, capable of further performing at least one driving assistance function in addition to the DAA function.
[0043] In the following, it is considered, for illustrative purposes only, that the module 102 is an AD AS module capable of implementing the first DAA function, and at least one driving assistance function. However, the module 102 may be exclusively dedicated to the DAA function, or to safety functions, without implementing a driving assistance function.
[0044] As a variant of what is shown in [Fig.l], the modules 101 and 102 can be a single hardware module, capable of implementing the aforementioned DAA function as well as the steps of the method described below with reference to [Fig.3].
[0045] The camera 106 may be arranged in a central position in the passenger compartment of the vehicle, facing the front passengers, in particular near an interior rearview mirror, as shown in [Fig. 1]. Alternatively, the camera 106 may be arranged facing the driver, for example above a steering wheel 105 shown in [Fig. 1].
[0046] The vehicle 100 further comprises a human machine interface, HMI, capable of exchanging information with the driver or with passengers of the vehicle 100.
[0047] No restriction is attached to the HMI, which comprises any component capable of receiving a command from the user, whether this command relates to the piloting of the vehicle or to the control of interior equipment, and / or capable of transmitting information to the driver. For this purpose, the HMI may comprise components such as a screen, a touch screen, a set of one or more buttons, a loudspeaker, a microphone, a dashboard capable of displaying one or more luminous pictograms of predefined shapes, a steering wheel vibration system, etc.
[0048] In the example shown in [Fig.l], the HMI comprises at least the following components: - an interface element 104 arranged behind the steering wheel 105, so as to be visible to the driver of the vehicle. Such an interface element 104 is also called a “digital instrument panel” and is in particular capable of displaying information relating to the operation of the vehicle and the driving situation; and - a central screen 103 capable of displaying information to the user, in particular information relating to the driving situation, such as map information, and / or information from an infotainment system of the vehicle.
[0049] According to the invention, at least one of the aforementioned components of the HMI is capable of receiving a user input, in particular a touch input from the user. For this purpose, at least one of the aforementioned interfaces may be a capacitive or resistive type screen capable of determining a location of a press, or of the approach, of a finger of the user, who may be the driver or a passenger of the vehicle 100.
[0050] In the following, embodiments are considered in which the central screen 103 is a touch screen capable of receiving a touch input from a user of the vehicle 100. It should be noted that in this embodiment, the digital handset 104 may be optional, the driving information display functions performed by most digital handsets then being implemented by the central screen 103, which makes it possible to reduce the number of elements of the HMI, and therefore the space requirement in the vehicle and the associated costs.
[0051] [Fig.2] represents a graphical interface 200 of a screen of a human-machine interface of a motor vehicle according to embodiments of the invention.
[0052] For example, the graphical interface 200 is displayed on the central screen 103 described with reference to [Fig.l], which is a touch screen in the described embodiments.
[0053] The graphical interface 200 indicates a first piece of information relating to the DAA function by means of a first pictogram 201. The first piece of information may be the activation state of the DAA function. Thus, the first pictogram 201 displayed depends on a current activation state of the DAA function, which may be: - an activated and active state, i.e. the DAA function is implemented normally; - an activated but not active state, i.e. although activated, the DAA function cannot be implemented, for example because the camera 106 is obstructed, and / or because the driver's face is hidden; - a disabled state; and / or - a faulty state, for example because the camera 106 is faulty or because the DAA function is faulty in the AD AS module 102.
[0054] For example, the color and / or shape of the first pictogram 201 may vary to indicate the different states mentioned above.
[0055] The graphical interface 200 may further comprise a second pictogram 202 indicating a second piece of information relating to the DAA function. The second graphical information 202 may for example be: - an indicator of the driver's fatigue level; and / or - an indicator of the driver's attention level.
[0056] The pictograms 201 and 202 can be controlled by the control module 101, in particular depending on the activation state of the DAA function in the AD AS module 102 and depending on the driver's fatigue and attention levels evaluated by the DAA function from the data from the camera 106.
[0057] Optionally, the graphical interface 200 according to the invention may comprise other pictograms indicating information and / or being selectable by the user to control functions of the vehicle, described for illustrative purposes.
[0058] The graphical interface 200 may for example comprise a third pictogram 203 indicating information on the speed of the vehicle 100, which is advantageous when the HMI does not comprise the digital handset 104.
[0059] The graphical interface 200 may further comprise a map 205 indicating a current position of the vehicle 100 relative to its environment.
[0060] The graphical interface 200 may further comprise an area 204 comprising one or more pictograms, indicating other information and / or capable of allowing the user to control functions of the vehicle 100 by entering a touch input from the user on said pictogram. The user may in particular navigate in a menu by pressing on the pictograms displayed in the area 204. For example, the user may access the settings of the vehicle and / or the infotainment system of the vehicle by one or more of the pictograms in the area 204.
[0061] A pictogram is understood to mean any graphic entity comprising a symbol and / or text composed of alphanumeric characters.
[0062] [Fig. 3] is a diagram illustrating the steps of a method for controlling a trajectory of the vehicle according to embodiments of the invention.
[0063] In an initial step 300, the control module 101 determines a current state of the DAA function, from among the aforementioned states. Optionally, the control module 101 also determines a state of attention of the driver, and / or a state of fatigue of the driver. For this purpose, the AD AS module 102 in charge of the DAA function can indicate the current state of the DAA function to the control module 101, the level of attention and / or the level of fatigue, determined from the data from the interior camera 106.
[0064] In a step 301, the control module 101 commands the display of a pictogram on the central screen 103 indicating information relating to the DAA function. For example, the control module 101 can command the display of the first pictogram 201 indicating the first information relating to the activation state of the function determined in step 300. Alternatively, step 301 is implemented by the DAA module 102, which is capable of controlling the central screen 103 for the display of the pictograms 201 and 202.
[0065] In a step 302, the control module 101 receives from the screen a signal indicating a user input on one of the pictograms 201 and 202 relating to the DAA function. In the following, it is considered that the user input is a touch input applied to the first pictogram 201 indicating the activation state of the DAA function. Thus, step 302 is a step of determining a user input applied to the first pictogram 201.
[0066] A user input applied to the first pictogram 201 designates any user input in a close vicinity of the first pictogram, in particular at a position closer to the first pictogram 201 than to the other pictograms displayed on the central screen 103.
[0067] At a step 303, the control module 101 may determine a type of user input applied to the first pictogram 201. For example, the signal received from the central screen 103 may indicate a type of touch input, such as a touch, a single press, a double press, a long press, a slide, etc.
[0068] In a step 304, the control module 101 may determine descriptive information of a current situation of the vehicle, in which the user input was received. No restriction is attached to the determination of the descriptive information of the current situation of the vehicle, which may include: - a vehicle activation state, “in contact” or “out of contact” for example; - a vehicle operating mode, for example from among a “parking” mode and one or more driving modes (economy, sport, etc.). The vehicle operating mode may in particular identify whether the vehicle is stationary or moving; - a vehicle locking state, from among a “locked” state and an “unlocked” state; and / or - any other information descriptive of the current situation of the vehicle, for example vehicle speed, number of passengers, etc.
[0069] In a step 305, the control module 101 activates a second function of the vehicle, the second function being distinct from the first function, at least as a function of the user input received in step 302.
[0070] No restriction is attached to the second function, which is any function distinct from the first DAA function. The second function can be activated by interaction with a pictogram already used by the first DAA function, and the deployment of the second function thus imposes no additional clutter on the graphical interface 200.
[0071] Preferably according to the invention, the second function may be an infotainment function or a vehicle safety function. Still preferably, the second function may use, just like the first DAA function, the camera 106 described previously. It is thus made possible to enrich the functions of the vehicle, without adding new components to the vehicle, and without cluttering the graphical interface 200, insofar as the pictogram 201 is already used to indicate the operating state of the first function. A pooling of graphical elements and hardware components may thus be provided between the first and second functions.
[0072] Steps 303 and 304 are only implemented in certain embodiments of the invention. Indeed, the control module 101 can activate the second function in step 305: - from the simple reception of a user input on the first pictogram 201, in which case none of the steps 303 and 304 are implemented. In this case, a single second function is provided according to the invention, and it is implemented upon reception of a user input on the first pictogram 201; - from the reception of a user input of a given type on the first pictogram 201, whatever the current situation of the vehicle, in which case step 303 is implemented but step 304 is not implemented. In this case, the second function can be a single second function, which is implemented on reception of the input of a given type on the first pictogram 201, or can be selected from several possible second functions, the selection being made from the given type. The other possible second functions can thus be associated with other user input types; - from the reception of a user input on the first pictogram 201 in a given vehicle situation, regardless of the type of user input, in which case step 303 is not implemented but step 304 is implemented. In this case, the second function may be a single second function, which is implemented upon reception of the user input in the given vehicle situation, identified by the descriptive information obtained in step 304, or may be selected from several possible second functions, the selection being made from the descriptive information of the current vehicle situation. The other possible second functions may thus be associated with driving situations other than the given vehicle situation; or - from the reception of a user input of a given type on the first pictogram and in a given vehicle situation, in which case steps 303 and 304 are both implemented. In this case, the second function may be a single second function, which is implemented upon reception of the user input of the given type, identified in step 304, and in the given vehicle situation, identified by the descriptive information obtained in step 304, or may be selected from several possible second functions, the selection being made from the type of user input determined in step 303 and from the descriptive information of the current vehicle situation determined in step 304. The other possible second functions may thus be associated with other combinations of user input types and vehicle situations.
[0073] Examples of second functions are listed below for illustrative purposes: - an image capture function by the interior camera 106 of the vehicle 100; - a function for viewing an image stored in the vehicle 100; - a function for monitoring the interior of the vehicle 100, said interior monitoring function being activated if the vehicle is stationary and, being implemented when the vehicle is locked, by triggering a sentinel mode.
[0074] The activation of the image capture function by the interior camera 106 may comprise, at a step 306, the acquisition of an image and the storage of the acquired image in a memory of the vehicle 100 accessible by the central screen 103. The memory is not shown in [Fig. 1]. The interior camera 106 may be oriented so as to acquire an image representing at least the driver. Furthermore, a field of vision of the camera 106 may be adapted according to information indicating the number of passengers in the vehicle. Such information may be obtained by the control module 101 from a seat belt reminder function, also called “Seat Belt Reminder” in English. Thus, if the seat belt reminder function indicates that the passenger seat belt is not fastened, the field of view of the camera 106 can be adapted by the control module 101 to acquire an image centered on the driver. On the contrary, if the seat belt reminder function indicates that the passenger seat belt is fastened, the field of view of the camera 106 can be adapted by the control module 101 to acquire an image including the driver and the passenger.
[0075] The image capture function by the interior camera 106 by receiving a user input on the picogram 201, can be implemented in a current situation of the vehicle in which the vehicle is moving. The user input allowing the activation of the image capture function by the interior camera 106 can be of the long press type for example.
[0076] Preferably, the image acquired during step 306 is not displayed on the graphical interface 200 of the central screen 103, so as not to disturb the driver while driving the vehicle, the vehicle then being in a moving situation.
[0077] Activating the function for viewing an image stored in the vehicle 100 may comprise, in a step 307, the display by the control module 101, on the central screen 103, of at least one image stored in the vehicle. No restriction is attached to the source from which said at least one stored image comes. Preferably, the stored image may come from activating the image capture function during step 306 described previously while the vehicle 100 is moving.
[0078] Activation of the image viewing function in step 307 may be implemented when the current vehicle situation is that the vehicle is stationary. Thus, the image viewing function is only activated if the vehicle is stationary, for example when it is determined in step 304 that the current vehicle situation is that the vehicle is in "parking" mode. In addition, the type of user input for selecting the image viewing function may be a click, or single tap, on the first pictogram 201.
[0079] While the image viewing function is activated, the user, driver or passenger, can browse the stored images and display them on the central screen 103.
[0080] In parallel with the image display during step 307, the control module 101 verifies that the vehicle 100 is still in parking mode, at a step 308. If a change in the operating mode of the vehicle is detected, from parking mode to a driving mode, the image display function can be interrupted and the method returns to step 301.
[0081] However, if no mode change is detected in step 308, image viewing on the central screen 103 is continued.
[0082] The vehicle interior monitoring function 100 may be activated following a user input received on the first pictogram 201, while the current situation of the vehicle is that the vehicle is stationary, in particular in parking mode. The activation of the vehicle interior monitoring function 100 may in particular follow the reception of a user input of the long press type on the first pictogram 201. The control module 101 may thus be able to implement, in the same current parking mode situation, either the vehicle interior monitoring function or the image display function, the selection of one or the other of the functions being made according to the type of user input.
[0083] Activating the vehicle interior monitoring function 100 may include the following steps: - in a step 309, the control module 101 changes a color of the first pictogram 201, in order to indicate that the activation is effective. In addition or as a variant, the control module 101 can indicate that locking of the vehicle 100 is required to activate a sentinel mode of the vehicle interior monitoring function 100. In other words, although the function is already active, the sentinel mode is not activated until the driver has locked the vehicle; - at a step 310, the control module 101 detects a locking of the vehicle 100 by the driver; - at a step 311, conditioned by the locking of the vehicle, the sentinel mode is activated, in which monitoring of the interior of the vehicle is implemented on the basis of images acquired by the camera 106. The sentinel mode may involve the acquisition of images in the event of detection of movement inside the vehicle.
[0084] According to a first embodiment, the three second functions described previously are alternatives of the invention: the control module 101 is only capable of implementing one of them.
[0085] According to a second embodiment, the control module 101 is capable of implementing two of the three second functions mentioned above, or the three second functions mentioned above, or even other second functions not described, which are then called “second possible functions”, and step 305 makes it possible to select one of the second possible functions, depending on the current situation of the vehicle identified in step 304, and / or the type of user input identified in step 303.
[0086] [Fig.4] shows the structure of a control module 101 according to embodiments of the invention.
[0087] The control module 101 comprises a processor 401 configured to communicate unidirectionally or bidirectionally, via one or more buses or via a direct wired connection, with a memory 402 such as a “Random Access Memory” type memory, RAM, or a “Read Ordy Memory” type memory, ROM, or any other type of memory (Flash, EEPROM, etc.). Alternatively, the memory 402 comprises several memories of the aforementioned types.
[0088] The memory 402 is capable of storing, permanently or temporarily, at least some of the data used and / or resulting from the implementation of the method described with reference to [Fig.3].
[0089] In particular, in some of the embodiments in which the control module 101 is capable of implementing several second functions, the memory 402 may be capable of storing rules for selecting a second function from among several possible second functions, depending on the current situation of the vehicle and / or a type of user input.
[0090] The processor 401 is capable of executing instructions, stored in the memory 402, for implementing the steps of the method according to the invention, described with reference to [Fig. 3]. Alternatively, the processor 401 can be replaced by a microcontroller designed and configured to carry out the steps of the method according to the invention, described with reference to [Fig. 3].
[0091] The control module 101 comprises a first interface 403 capable of receiving data from the central screen 103, in particular data indicating the user input, and possibly the type of user input, received on the first pictogram 201. The first interface 403 can further be adapted to transmit control signals to the central screen 103, for example to control the second image display function described previously.
[0092] The control module 300 further comprises a second interface 404 capable of communicating with the DAA module 102, in particular during step 300 described previously, or with other modules of the vehicle, in particular to obtain one or more descriptive information of the current situation of the vehicle.
[0093] The control module 101 may further comprise a third interface 405 capable of communicating with the interior camera 106, in particular to control the second function(s) which are based on control of the interior camera 106, such as the image capture function or the function for monitoring the interior of the vehicle.
[0094] The present invention is not limited to the embodiments described above as examples; it extends to other variants.
