Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: Mineral sunscreen composition comprising a hydrophobic polymer SCOPE OF DISCLOSURE
[0001] This disclosure relates to mineral sunscreen compositions comprising a unique hydrophobic polymer, and methods of using mineral sunscreen compositions to protect skin and hair against ultraviolet light. CONTEXT
[0002] The negative effects of exposure to ultraviolet (“UV”) radiation are well known. Prolonged exposure to sunlight causes damage, such as sunburn, to the skin and dries out the hair, making it brittle. When the skin is exposed to UV radiation with a wavelength of approximately 290 nm to approximately 400 nm, long-term damage can lead to serious conditions such as skin cancer.
[0003] UV radiation also contributes to aging by causing the formation of free radicals in the skin. Free radicals include, for example, singlet oxygen, hydroxyl radicals, superoxide anions, nitric oxide, and hydrogen radicals. Free radicals attack DNA, membrane lipids, and proteins, generating carbon radicals. These, in turn, react with oxygen to produce a peroxyl radical, which can attack adjacent fatty acids to generate new carbon radicals. This cascade leads to a chain reaction producing lipid peroxidation products. Damage to the cell membrane results in a loss of cell permeability, an increase in intercellular ion concentration, and a decreased ability to excrete or detoxify waste. The end result is a loss of skin elasticity and the appearance of wrinkles. This process is commonly called photoaging.
[0004] Sunscreens can be used to provide protection against UV damage and delay the signs of aging. The degree of UV protection provided by a sunscreen composition is directly related to the quantity and type of UV filters it contains. The higher the quantity of UV filters, the higher the degree of UV protection. Mineral UV filters often produce a white cast when applied to the skin, especially when used in large quantities in sunscreen formulations, which many consumers dislike. Furthermore, consumers seek a water-resistant sunscreen composition to To avoid the need for frequent reapplication of sunscreen, especially for those who enjoy water, the inventors in this disclosure propose sunscreen compositions that improve the transparency of mineral sunscreens, are water-resistant, and provide exceptional protection against harmful UV rays. Summary of the invention
[0005] This disclosure relates to sunscreen compositions that are highly effective, water-resistant, and aesthetically pleasing. The sunscreen compositions include mineral UV filtering agents, known to be non-irritating, natural, and gentle on the skin. One drawback of mineral-based sunscreen compositions, however, is their tendency to leave a white cast on the skin. Consumers prefer sunscreen compositions to have a natural (imperceptible) appearance. However, developing mineral-based sunscreen products with a high sun protection factor (SPF) that exhibit minimal whitening is challenging. The inventors discovered that using a hydrophobic polymer formed as a reaction product of a natural or food-grade oil and a methacrylate or acrylate polymer not only improves the transparency of the mineral-based sunscreen composition but also increases water resistance and durability. The resulting sunscreen compositions are long-lasting, wash-resistant, and minimize bleaching. Generally, mineral sunscreen compositions are oil-in-water emulsions and include: a. a hydrophobic polymer formed as a reaction product of a natural or food-grade oil and a methacrylate or acrylate polymer; b. one or more solvents capable of solubilizing the reaction product of (a); c. one or more mineral UV filtration agents; d. one or more surfactants; and e. of water.

Surfactant#
[0058] For the purposes of this disclosure, the term "surfactant" includes emulsifiers and detergents. Surfactants are compounds that reduce the surface tension between two liquids or between a liquid and a solid. Surfactants are amphiphilic, meaning they contain hydrophilic (water-loving) head groups and hydrophobic (water-repelling, or oil-loving) tails. Surfactants adsorb at the oil-water interface, thereby reducing the surface tension.
[0059] For the purposes of this disclosure, an "emulsifier" is a surfactant that stabilizes emulsions. Emulsifiers coat the droplets of an emulsion and prevent them from clumping together or coalescing. An "emulsion" is a mixture of two or more liquids, with or without an emulsifier, that are normally immiscible. One of the liquids, the "dispersed phase," forms droplets in the other liquid, the "continuous phase."
[0060] A “detergent” is a surfactant which has cleaning properties in dilute solutions and is generally anionic.
[0061] Surfactants may be anionic, cationic, amphoteric (zwitterionic), or nonionic. Preferably, the emulsions described herein include one or more surfactants selected from anionic surfactants, amphoteric (zwitterionic) surfactants, nonionic surfactants, or mixtures thereof. In various embodiments, the emulsions are preferably free or substantially free of cationic surfactants. In other embodiments, the emulsions include one or more cationic surfactants. In preferred embodiments, the emulsions contain one or more biosurfactants, one or more anionic surfactants, optionally one or more nonionic surfactants, or mixtures thereof.
[0062] In a preferred embodiment, the compositions of this disclosure include a plurality of surfactants, wherein the plurality of surfactants includes one or more biosurfactants and one or more surfactants other than one or more biosurfactants. In other embodiments, the compositions of this disclosure include one or more biosurfactants, one or more anionic surfactants, and optionally, one or more nonionic surfactants.
[0063] In a preferred embodiment, the mineral sunscreen composition includes one or more biosurfactants. In other embodiments, the mineral sunscreen composition includes one or more biosurfactants and one or more additional surfactants different from the one or more biosurfactants selected from anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants, or combinations thereof. Biosurfactant
[0064] Biosurfactants are amphiphilic molecules, for example glycolipids (e.g., sophorolipids, rhamnolipids, cellobiose lipids, mannosylerythritol lipids, and trehalose lipids), lipopeptides (e.g., surfactin, iturine, fengycin, arthrofactin, and lichenysin), flavolipids, phospholipids (e.g., cardiolipins), fatty acid ester compounds, fatty acid ether compounds, and high molecular weight polymers such as than lipoproteins, lipopolysaccharide-protein complexes and polysaccharide-protein-fatty acid complexes.
[0065] Biosurfactants are environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and non-toxic, and can be classified as high-molecular-weight or low-molecular-weight biosurfactants. Low-molecular-weight biosurfactants effectively reduce surface and interfacial tension, while high-molecular-weight biosurfactants are more effective as emulsion stabilizers. Examples of low-molecular-weight biosurfactants include glycolipids, such as rhamnolipids, sophorolipids, lipopeptides, and trehalolipids. These low-molecular-weight biosurfactants have hydrophilic heads composed of sugar motifs linked by glycosidic bonds to hydrophobic, nonpolar portions. Examples of high-molecular-weight biosurfactants include polysaccharides, lipopolysaccharides, proteins, and lipoproteins.A polysaccharide-based biosurfactant can be classified into sorbitan esters, sucrose esters, and glucose-based surfactants, which include alkyl polyglycosides and fatty acid glucamides.
[0066] Non-limiting examples of biosurfactants include lipopeptides such as surfactin; fatty acids and phospholipids, polymer matrix biosurfactants; particulate biosurfactants; and bacterial biosurfactants composed of polysaccharides, proteins, lipopolysaccharides, lipoproteins or complex mixtures of these biopolymers.

[0073] The term “rhamnolipids” includes compounds of general formula (II) and their salts,
[0074]
[0075]
[0076]
[0077]
[0078] in which • mRL=2, 1 or 0, • nRL=l or 0, • R1rl and R2rl = are independently organic residues having 2 to 24, preferably 5 to 13 carbon atoms, in particular alkyl residues optionally branched, optionally substituted, in particular hydroxy-substituted, optionally unsaturated, in particular optionally mono-, bi- or tri-unsaturated, preferably those selected from the group consisting of pentenyl, heptenyl, nonenyl, undecenyl and tridecenyl and (CH2)O-CHs where o = 1 to 23, preferably 4 to 12. The term "di-rhamnolipid" in the context of the present invention refers to compounds of general formula (II) or their salts, where nRL=l. The term "monorhamnolipid" in the context of the present invention refers to compounds of general formula (II) or their salts, where nRL=0. The distinct rhamnolipides are abbreviated according to the following nomenclature: "diRL-CXCY" denotes the di-rhamnolipides of general formula (II), in which one of the residues R1rl and R2rl=(CH2)o—CH3 where o=X-4 and the remaining residue R1 or R2=(CH2)O— CH3 where o=Y-4.
[0079] “monoRL-CXCY” refers to mono-rhamnolipids of general formula (II), in which one of the residues R1rl and R2RL=(CH.sub.2).sub.o—CH.sub.3 where o=X-4 and the remaining residue R1rl or R2rl=(CH2)o—CH3 where o=Y-4. The nomenclature used therefore does not distinguish between “CXCY” and “CYCX”.
[0080] For rhamnolipids where mRL=0, monoRL-CX or diRL-CX is used accordingly.
[0081] If one of the aforementioned indices X and / or Y is provided with ":Z", this means that the respective residue R1rl and / or R2rl is equal to an unbranched, unsubstituted hydrocarbon residue having X-3 or Y-3 carbon atoms having Z double bonds.

[0140] The total amount of one or more film-forming polymers in the mineral sunscreen composition, if any, will vary, but may be from about 0.1 to about 15% by weight, based on the total weight of the mineral sunscreen composition. In other embodiments, the mineral sunscreen composition includes approximately 0.1 to approximately 10% by weight, approximately 0.1 to approximately 8% by weight, approximately 0.1 to approximately 5% by weight, approximately 0.1 to approximately 3% by weight, approximately 0.5 to approximately 15% by weight, approximately 0.5 to approximately 10% by weight, approximately 0.5 to approximately 8% by weight, approximately 0.5 to approximately 5% by weight, approximately 0.5 to approximately 3% by weight, approximately 1 to approximately 15% by weight, approximately 1 to approximately 10% by weight, approximately 1 to approximately 8% by weight, approximately 1 to approximately 5% by weight or approximately 1 to approximately 3% by weight, based on the total weight of the mineral sunscreen composition. Stilbenoids
[0141] Mineral sunscreen compositions may optionally include one or more stilbenoids. Stilbenoids are byproducts of heartwood formations in trees that possess phytoalexinic properties. Chemically, they are derivatives of stilbene, often containing one or more phenolic functional groups. Biochemically, they belong to the family of phenylalanine derivatives called phenylpropanoids. Much of their biosynthetic pathway is shared with those of aromatic chalconoids, such as chalcone.
[0142] A well-characterized botanical stilbenoid is resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene), a resorcinol derivative first isolated in 1939 from white hellebore (Veratrum album), which is found in the skin of red grapes, thus than in other fruits and nuts, including berries and peanuts. Non-limiting examples of useful stilbenoids include piceide, resveratrol, piceatannol, pterostilbene, and mixtures thereof. In some cases, piceide and resveratrol are the preferred stilbenoids, with piceide being the most preferred.
[0143] The total amount of stilbenoids in mineral sunscreen compositions, if any, may be about 0.01 to 8% by weight, based on the total weight of the sunscreen composition. In other embodiments, the total amount of one or more stilbenoids in the mineral sunscreen composition is about 0.01 to about 5% by weight, about 0.01 to about 3% by weight, about 0.1 to about 8% by weight, about 0.1 to about 5% by weight, about 0.1 to about 3% by weight, about 0.5 to about 8% by weight, about 0.5 to about 5% by weight, about 0.5 to about 3% by weight, about 1 to about 8% by weight, about 1 to about 5% by weight, or about 1 to about 3% by weight, based on the total weight of the mineral sunscreen composition. Photostabilizers
[0144] Photostabilizers are organic compounds that help prevent UV filters from losing their effectiveness in sunlight. Some photostabilizers help to structurally and geometrically stabilize UV filter molecules through electrostatic and van der Waals interactions, making them less likely to participate in chemical reactions. Other photostabilizers protect sunscreens by helping to dissipate UV energy more quickly, thereby reducing or even eliminating the possibility of a chemical reaction. This process is called energy transfer and can occur when the sunscreen agent and the photostabilizing molecules exchange electrons. In this way, the sunscreen agents are fully active in protecting the skin by absorbing harmful rays, while the photostabilizers dissipate the energy.
[0145] Non-limiting examples of photostabilizers include alpha-cyanodiphenyl acrylate, naphthalenedicarboxylic acid diesters or polyesters, 4-hydroxybenzylidenemalonate derivatives or 4-hydroxycinnamate derivatives, 2-pyrrolidinone-4-carboxy ester, ethylhexyl methoxycrylene, diethylhexyl syringylidenemalonate, or combinations thereof.
[0146] In a preferred embodiment, the mineral sunscreen composition includes a combination of photostabilizers selected from stilbenoids and ethylhexyl methoxycrylene, and diethylhexyl syringylidene malonate. Stilbenoids, ethylhexyl methoxycrylene, and diethylhexyl syringylidene malonate can interact synergistically in combination to unexpectedly increase the SPF of the mineral UV filtering agents. Thus, the amount of stilbenoids, ethylhexyl methoxycrylene, and syringylidene malonate of diethylhexyl and the weight ratio of these compounds to each other in sunscreen compositions are sufficient to improve the SPF of the sunscreen composition.
[0147] In one embodiment, one or more stilbenoids, ethylhexyl methoxycrylene, and diethylhexyl syringylidene malonate are present in sufficient quantities to increase the in vitro SPF of the sunscreen composition by at least 5% compared to an otherwise identical sunscreen composition in which the total amount of stilbenoids, ethylhexyl methoxycrylene, and diethylhexyl syringylidene malonate is replaced solely by ethylhexyl methoxycrylene. [0170] Droplet size can be determined using Brookhaven dynamic light scattering (DLS). DLS is a technique used to determine droplet size in a colloidal system or emulsion. When samples are illuminated with a monochromatic laser beam, the particles present in the samples undergo Brownian motion, causing fluctuations in the intensity of the scattered light. The scattered light is then collected at different angles, and the autocorrelation function of these intensity fluctuations is analyzed. The analysis provides information on the scattering rate of the particles, from which the size distribution is deduced using mathematical models.Brookhaven's DLS instruments use advanced algorithms to accurately interpret data, providing information on the dynamic behavior and size characteristics of particles ranging from a few nanometers to several micrometers in a liquid medium. FPS in vitro
[0171] The SPF (sun protection factor) is a measure of how effective a sunscreen composition is at providing protection against ultraviolet B (UV-B) rays. The main cause of redness and sunburn, UV-B rays tend to damage the epidermis, the outermost layers of the skin. The in vitro SPF can be determined using methods known in the art. However, a preferred method for determining the in vitro SPF is the method described in Fageon, L. et al. Int. J. Cosmetic Sci., 2009, 405-17.
[0172] The SPF of the mineral sunscreen composition can be adjusted and increased or decreased as needed, for example, by changing the amounts and combinations of UV filtering agents in the composition. Different SPF levels are desired for different uses and skin types.
[0173] The SPF of the mineral sunscreen composition can be adjusted as required. Therefore, the mineral sunscreen composition can have an SPF from about 5 to about 100. In various embodiments, an SPF of about 5 to about 50, from about 5 to about 25, from about 10 to about 50, from about 10 to about 15, from about 50 to about 100, from about 50 to about 70, or from about 5 to about 10, may be desired. EXAMPLES
[0220] An implementation of this disclosure is provided by means of the following examples. The examples are intended to illustrate the technology but are not intended to be limiting. Example 1 Water resistance
[0221] The emulsions shown in the table below were prepared.

[0223] 1 Product of the reaction of linseed oil and a methacrylate polymer isobutyl
[0224] The compositions were prepared by mixing m-rhamnolipid, sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, MycelX®, caprylic / capric triglyceride, and a small amount of water at 2,750 rpm for 2 minutes at 25°C. The composition is a homogeneous mixture. Titanium dioxide was added to the homogeneous mixture at different concentrations, and additional water was added to form the final emulsion containing 5%, 8%, and 10% titanium dioxide.
[0225] Composition A of the invention and comparative composition D were used to determine the resistance of the compositions to water and to washing with water. A quantity of 0.5 ml of composition A of the invention and comparative composition D was applied to glass slides and allowed to dry. The whiteness of the slides was evaluated using a DigiEye® Color Measurement spectrometer, which determines the L*a*b* values. The value "L" refers to whiteness. The glass slides were then washed with tap water at 40 °C and at a low flow rate (500 ml / min), and then allowed to dry. The whiteness of the slides was again evaluated using the DigiEye® Color Measurement spectrometer.
[0226] [Tables3] Whiteness (L value) of compositions on glass AD L value (whiteness) on the glass slide in the dry state before washing 93.20 92.70 L value (whiteness) on the glass slide in the dry state after washing 89.18 27.71
[0227] The whiteness of composition A of the invention and of the comparative composition D on the glass slides before washing was almost identical. However, after washing the slides, the glass slide treated with composition A of the invention was significantly whiter than the glass slide treated with composition D of the invention. This illustrates that composition A of the invention is much more water-resistant than the comparative composition D. Example 2 Transparency on the skin
[0228] A quantity of 0.5 ml of composition A of the invention and comparative composition D (shown in Example 1) was applied uniformly to the backs of hands. Composition A of the invention was applied to the back of an individual's left hand, and comparative composition D was applied to the back of the same individual's right hand. Both composition A of the invention and comparative composition D were applied uniformly to the backs of the hands and allowed to dry for 15 minutes.
[0229] The whiteness of the backs of the hands was assessed using a DigiEye® Color Measurement spectrometer, which determines the L*a*b* values. The value “L” refers to whiteness. The results are presented in the table below.
[0230] [Tables4] Whiteness (L value) of compositions on the skin AD L value (whiteness) on the skin, dry state before washing 64.16 75.15
[0231] The results show that skin treated with composition A of the invention was less white (more transparent) than skin treated with the comparative composition D, even though both compositions included the same amount of titanium dioxide. Example 3 Transparency on the skin and water resistance
[0232] A quantity of 0.5 ml of composition C of the invention and comparative composition E (shown in Example 1) was applied uniformly to the backs of hands. Composition C of the invention was applied to the back of an individual's left hand, and comparative composition E was applied to the back of the same individual's right hand. Both composition C of the invention and comparative composition D were applied uniformly to the backs of hands. The whiteness of the backs of the hands was evaluated using a DigiEye® Color Measurement spectrometer, which determines the L*a*b* values, while the compositions were still wet. The value "L" refers to whiteness.
[0233] The compositions were left to dry on the backs of the hands. After 15 minutes of drying, the L values were evaluated again.
[0234] The backs of the hands were then washed with tap water at 40 °C and a low flow rate (500 ml / min). After washing, the backs of the hands were again evaluated using the DigiEye® Color Measurement spectrometer while the hands were still damp. The results are presented in the table below.
[0235] [Tables5] Whiteness (L value) of compositions on skin EC L value (whiteness) on skin, wet state before washing 77.40 78.28 L value (whiteness) on skin, dry state before washing 73.17 76.15 L value (whiteness) on skin, wet state after washing 76.90 71.16
[0236] The whiteness of composition C of the invention and of the comparative composition E on the skin before and after initial application and before drying was essentially identical. However, upon drying, composition C of the invention was less white (more transparent) than the comparative composition E. After rinsing, composition C of the invention was whiter (less transparent) than the comparative composition E. This shows that composition C of the invention is more water-resistant than the comparative composition E. However, composition C of the invention is more transparent after drying on the skin than the comparative composition E, when equal amounts of titanium dioxide are applied to the skin. [0240] 1. Product of the reaction of linseed oil and an isobutyl methacrylate polymer A concentration of 1.3 mg / cm² of each composition from the table above was applied to polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) (HD6) plates using a robot, and the plates were allowed to dry for approximately 15 to 30 minutes (until completely dry). An initial Sun Protection Factor (SPF) was then measured at 64 locations on the PMMA plates. The plates were then positioned vertically in holders of a dissolution apparatus, which immerses the plates halfway in deionized water (DI) and agitates the plate at 24 rpm at 25 °C for 40 minutes. The plates were removed and allowed to dry vertically for approximately 30 to 40 minutes (until completely dry). The SPF was again measured on the plates using an 8x8 grid at 64 locations. maintaining the same orientation as that used for the initial measurements. The percentage of water resistance was then calculated as follows.
[0241] The lowest percentage of water resistance appears along the bottom row of plates, with an average percentage of water resistance as shown in the table below.
[0242] [Tables?] Control Comparative Invention FGHI 14.47% 31.10% 34.99% 13.34%
[0243] The sunscreen compositions of the invention exhibited a percentage of water resistance more than double that of both the control and the comparative sunscreen composition.
[0244] The preceding description illustrates and describes the disclosure. Furthermore, the disclosure shows and describes only the preferred embodiments. However, as mentioned above, it should be understood that it is suitable for use in various other combinations, modifications, and environments, and that it is suitable for changes or modifications in the scope of the inventive concepts as expressed herein, in accordance with the teachings above and / or the skills or knowledge of the relevant art. The embodiments described herein are further intended to explain the best known embodiments of the applicant and to enable other persons skilled in the art to use the disclosure in such or other embodiments, and with the various modifications required by the particular applications or uses thereof.Consequently, the description is not intended to limit the invention to the form disclosed herein. The appended claims are also intended to be interpreted as including other embodiments.
[0245] When the following terms are used in this patent memorandum, they are used as defined below.
[0246] The terms “comprising”, “having” and “including” are used in their broad and non-limiting sense.
[0247] The expression "mineral UV filtering agent" is interchangeable with the expressions "mineral UV blocking agent", "inorganic UV filtering agent", "inorganic UV blocking agent", "mineral UV filter" and "inorganic UV filter". Mineral UV filtering agents are compounds that do not include carbon atoms in their chemical structures and are capable of filtering or absorbing UV radiation between 280 and 400 nm.
[0248] The compositions and processes of the present invention may include, consist of, or consist essentially of the essential elements and limitations of the disclosure described herein, together with any additional or optional ingredients, components or limitations described herein or otherwise useful.
[0249] All percentages, parts and ratios herein are based on the total weight of the compositions in this disclosure, unless otherwise stated.
[0250] All ranges and values disclosed in the description are inclusive and combinable. For example, any value or point described herein that falls within a range described herein can serve as a minimum or maximum value for deducing a subrange, and so on. Furthermore, all ranges provided are intended to include each specific range within the given ranges, as well as a combination of intermediate subranges. Thus, a range of 1 to 5 specifically includes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, as well as subranges such as 2 to 5, 3 to 5, 2 to 3, 2 to 4, 1 to 4, and so on.
[0251] Except in functional examples, or unless otherwise indicated, all numbers expressing quantities of ingredients and / or reaction conditions are understood to be modified in all circumstances by the term "approximately", meaning within + / - 5% of the number indicated.
[0252] As used herein, the expression "at least one" is interchangeable with "one or more" and therefore includes individual components as well as mixtures / combinations.
[0253] The term “treat” (and its grammatical variations) as used herein refers to the application of compositions of this disclosure to the surface of the skin and / or hair. The term “treat” (and its grammatical variations) as used herein also refers to bringing the skin or hair into contact with the compositions of this disclosure.
[0254] The expression "substantially free" or "essentially free" as used herein means that there is less than about 2% by weight of a specific material added to a composition, relative to the total weight of the compositions. However, the compositions may include less than about 1% by weight, less than about 0.5% by weight, less than about 0.1% by weight, less than 0.01% by weight of the specified material, or not include the specified material at all.
[0255] The term "active substance", as used here in relation to the percentage quantity of an ingredient or raw material, refers to 100% of the activity of the ingredient or raw material.
[0256] “Cosmetically acceptable” means that the article in question is compatible with a keratinous substrate such as skin and hair. For example, a "cosmetically acceptable vector" means a vector compatible with a keratinous substrate such as skin and hair.
[0257] The expression "one of their mixtures" does not require that the mixture include all of the elements A, B, C, D, E, and F (although all of the elements A, B, C, D, E, and F may be included). Rather, it indicates that a mixture of two or more of A, B, C, D, E, and F may be included. In other words, it is equivalent to the formulation "one or more elements selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, and a mixture of two or more of A, B, C, D, E, and F."
[0258] Similarly, the expression "one of its / their salts" also refers to "its / their salts." Thus, when the disclosure refers to "an item selected from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, one of their salts, or a mixture thereof," it indicates that one or more of A, B, C, D, and F may be included, one or more of a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F may be included, or a mixture of any two of A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E, and a salt of F may be included.
[0259] The salts referred to throughout the disclosure may include salts having a counterion such as an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, or an ammonium counterion. This list of counterions is not exhaustive.
[0260] The term "stable emulsion" refers to a composition which does not undergo phase separation up to a temperature of 45 °C for at least two weeks.
[0261] The expression "included" for a range of concentrations means that the limits of that range are included in the defined interval.
[0262] “Volatile”, as used herein, means having a flash point of less than about 100 °C.
[0263] “Non-volatile”, as used herein, means having a flash point greater than approximately 100 °C.
[0264] The term "polymers", as defined herein, includes homopolymers and copolymers formed from at least two different types of monomers.
[0265] The term "INCI" is an abbreviation for International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients, which is a system of names provided by the International Nomenclature Committee of the Personal Care Products Council to describe the ingredients of personal care products.
[0266] The expression "ratio by weight" or "ratio by mass", as used here, refers to the amount of a substance in proportion to a mixture containing said substance substance, and is calculated by dividing the quantity of said substance by its weight in the mixture by the weight of the mixture containing said substance. For example, a weight ratio of 0.4 for substance A in a mixture of A, B, and C indicates that the weight of substance A divided by the total weight of substances A, B, and C is 0.4.
[0267] In this document, all provided ranges are intended to include each specific range within the given ranges, as well as a combination of intermediate sub-ranges. Thus, a range from 1 to 5 specifically includes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, as well as sub-ranges such as 2 to 5, 3 to 5, 2 to 3, 2 to 4, 1 to 4, etc.
[0268] Some of the various identified component categories may overlap. In such cases where an overlap may exist and the composition includes both components (or the composition includes more than two overlapping components), an overlapping compound does not represent more than one component. For example, a fatty acid may be characterized as both a nonionic surfactant and a fatty compound. If a particular composition includes both a nonionic surfactant and a fatty compound, a single fatty acid will serve only as either a nonionic surfactant or a fatty compound (the single fatty acid does not serve as both a nonionic surfactant and a fatty compound).
