Description

Title of the invention: Device configured to be attached to a tow ball of a vehicle technical field

[0001] The invention relates to the field of attachment devices on a tow ball and more particularly to such a device and a luggage rack comprising such a device. Prior art

[0002] A tow ball, also called a tow ball or coupling head, is a mechanical device used to connect a device to be transported to a vehicle, such as a car. The tow ball is fixed to the rear of the vehicle, and more specifically to the rear chassis. The device to be transported is therefore positioned on an external part of the vehicle.

[0003] The terms "front" and "rear" of the vehicle are defined as referring to the vehicle in a forward-moving position. In other words, when a driver of said vehicle is normally seated in a driving position, said driver has their back to the rear of the vehicle and is facing the front of the vehicle.

[0004] The exterior part of the vehicle is opposed to the interior part of the vehicle which corresponds to a volume delimited by a body of the vehicle.

[0005] The terms "upper" and "lower" of the tow ball are defined as referring to the tow ball fixed in the position of use on a vehicle.

[0006] The tow balls are made of metal and have a generally spherical fixing part connected to a linking element which is designed to be fixed to the chassis of the vehicle.

[0007] The tow ball has features defined by regulations, for example ISO / R 468 and ISO 1302 in the European Union. According to these regulations, the mounting portion has a diameter of 50 mm. A groove is present between the mounting portion and the connecting element, i.e., on a lower area of the mounting portion. In addition, the mounting portion includes a flat surface positioned on an upper part of the mounting portion.

[0008] There are devices to be transported which, when connected to the vehicle by means of the tow ball, may exhibit relative movement between the tow ball's mounting part and an additional mounting part of the device to be transported, said additional mounting part coming into contact with the tow ball's mounting part. This is the case, for example, with devices to be transported such as a trailer or a caravan.

[0009] Furthermore, there are also transportable devices which, when connected to the vehicle by means of the tow ball, do not exhibit any relative movement between the tow ball's mounting part and the complementary mounting part of the transportable device. This is the case, for example, with transportable devices such as luggage racks or bicycle carriers. These transportable devices will hereafter be referred to as fixed devices.

[0010] There are solutions for assembling a fixed type device on a tow ball in a demountable manner.

[0011] However, there is no solution allowing for a quick, secure and inexpensive assembly to manufacture, as well as high rigidity allowing a significant payload to be positioned on the tow ball. Description of the invention

[0012] One embodiment relates to a device comprising an additional fastening part configured to come into contact with a fastening part of a tow ball of a vehicle, the additional fastening part being configured to be permanently assembled onto the fastening part, the additional fastening part comprising:

[0013] A support wall provided with a notch, the notch being configured to be inserted around a groove in the fixing part of the tow ball;

[0014] A clamping element extending along a clamping axis, the notch in the support wall being aligned with the clamping axis, the clamping element being configured to exert a holding force on a flat of the coupling ball fixing part, the clamping element comprising a screw fixing means.

[0015] Characterized in that the complementary fastening part also comprises a first locking plate opposite a second locking plate connected to each other by at least one locking element, the first locking plate and the second locking plate being configured to come into contact with a convex wall of the fastening part, the at least one locking element extending transversely to the clamping axis.

[0016] The device which is the subject of the invention is a fixed type transportable device which can be attached to a tow ball in a removable manner.

[0017] The device includes a complementary fastening portion configured to cooperate with a fastening portion of a tow ball in a fixed manner. In other words, when the device is fixed to the tow ball, there is no relative movement between the complementary fastening portion and the fastening portion. The fastening portion becomes fixed to the complementary fastening portion.

[0018] Subsequently, it is defined that the terms "upper" and "lower" of the device refer to the device fixed in the position of use on the tow ball of a vehicle.

[0019] The additional fastening portion comprises a support wall. This support wall has a notch, i.e., a concave recess in one edge of the support wall. The notch is substantially U-shaped, with the spacing between two sides of the notch equal to the diameter of a groove in the tow ball. The notch is configured to be positioned around the groove in the tow ball. In other words, the groove in the tow ball is inserted into the notch with a translational movement along an elongation axis of the notch. Thus, the fastening portion is locked along two axes perpendicular to the elongation axis of the support wall. The fastening portion can be removed from the support wall only with a translational movement along the elongation axis of the notch.

[0020] The clamping element is formed by a screw-fastening means, such as a threaded rod screwed into a thread. The screw-fastening means corresponds to the clamping axis. The clamping element is positioned opposite the notch, and more precisely opposite the center of the notch. In other words, the notch is aligned with the clamping axis. The clamping element is screwed in after the notch is inserted around the groove. The clamping element then exerts pressure on a flat surface of the fastening part, and the device is fixed to the fastening part. The flat surface is positioned opposite the groove of the fastening part. The flat surface is positioned on an upper part of the fastening part, and the groove is positioned on a lower part of the fastening part. The pressure exerted by the clamping element prevents the fastening part from being withdrawn from the support wall.

[0021] In addition, the supplementary mounting portion comprises two locking plates that are detachably connected to each other by means of at least one locking element, for example, two locking elements. The locking plates extend opposite, and more precisely parallel to, each other. The locking plates extend, for example, perpendicularly to the support wall. When the device is attached to the mounting portion of the tow ball, the locking plates come into contact with the convex wall of the mounting portion. The convex wall is substantially spherical and extends between the flat and the groove. The locking plates are secured after the notch is positioned around the groove of the mounting portion.

[0022] Thus, the additional fixing part is fixed to the fixing part of the tow ball in a non-removable manner only by means that are simple to implement and inexpensive to manufacture.

[0023] The object of this presentation may also have one or more of the following characteristics taken alone or in combination.

[0024] In some embodiments, the first blocking plate is fixed to the support wall, and the second blocking plate is assembled in a removable manner to the additional fixing part.

[0025] In other words, the first blocking plate is fixed relative to the support wall. For example, the first blocking plate is welded to the support wall.

[0026] The second locking plate is movable relative to the first locking plate.

[0027] Thus, the second locking plate is removed before the notch is positioned around the groove, and then the second locking plate is positioned opposite the first locking plate.

[0028] The second locking plate can preferably be completely removed from the additional fixing part so that no mechanical link connects the second locking plate to the first locking plate.

[0029] In some embodiments, the first locking plate and the second locking plate extend transversely to the elongation axis of the notch.

[0030] In some embodiments, the first locking plate and the second locking plate extend along the elongation axis of the notch.

[0031] In certain embodiments, the first locking plate, and / or the second locking plate, includes a first concave portion having a shape complementary to the convex wall of the fixing part, the first concave portion extending along the clamping axis.

[0032] The first concave portion corresponds to a portion having a hollow configured to cooperate with the convex wall of the fastening part. The first concave portion extends along the clamping axis. The first concave portion therefore has a shape complementary to the convex wall along the clamping axis so that the convex wall can fit intimately into the first concave portion.

[0033] Thus, when the fixing part is positioned in the complementary fixing part, the first concave portion comes to fit the convex wall of the fixing part.

[0034] In certain embodiments, the first locking plate, and / or the second locking plate, includes a second concave portion having a shape complementary to the convex wall of the fixing part, the second concave portion extending transversely to the clamping axis.

[0035] The second concave portion corresponds to a portion having a hollow configured to cooperate with the convex wall of the fastening part. The second concave portion extends transversely to the clamping axis. The second concave portion therefore has a shape complementary to the convex wall transversely to the clamping axis so that the convex wall can fit intimately into the second concave portion.

[0036] Thus, when the fixing part is positioned in the complementary fixing part, the second concave portion comes to fit the convex wall of the fixing part.

[0037] In some embodiments, at least one locking element comprises a threaded rod cooperating with a nut.

[0038] In some embodiments, the clamping element includes at least one control means.

[0039] The control means is preferably a visual control means that allows a user to verify that the expected torque has been applied to the clamping element. Furthermore, the control means can also prevent the screw-fastening means from loosening.

[0040] In some embodiments, the control means is an element which deforms when the expected torque is applied to the clamping element.

[0041] In some embodiments, the control means is a Belleville washer, also called a spring washer, or elastic washer, and / or a spring, and / or a conical washer.

[0042] The Belleville puck has a conical shape which flattens when a predetermined force is exerted on it.

[0043] Positioning a Belleville washer on the clamping element ensures sufficient tightening by the user and prevents the clamping element from loosening. The user must tighten the clamping element to the predefined torque until the washer flattens. The washer thus serves as a visual indicator to verify that the predefined torque has been applied during assembly of the device.

[0044] In some embodiments, the screw thread of the clamping element is integral with the support wall.

[0045] Thus it is not possible to lose the thread of the clamping element, and more broadly the clamping element.

[0046] In some embodiments, the clamping element is equipped with an anti-theft device.

[0047] The anti-theft device is designed to prevent the clamping element from being loosened or unscrewed so that the fastening part cannot be removed from the additional fixing part. The anti-theft device therefore also prevents the clamping element from loosening due to vibrations during vehicle movement.

[0048] One embodiment relates to a method of fixing a device according to any one of the preceding claims onto a tow ball of a vehicle, comprising the following steps: - An insertion step in which the notch in the support wall is inserted around the groove in the fixing part of the tow ball; - A tightening step in which the clamping element is tightened onto the flat of the coupling ball's fixing part so as to exert a holding force; - A locking step in which the first locking plate is connected to the second locking plate by means of at least one locking element.

[0049] The locking and clamping steps are performed after the insertion step. However, there is no set order for the clamping and locking steps.

[0050] In some embodiments, the blocking step includes a positioning phase of the second blocking plate opposite the first blocking plate, followed by a blocking phase in which at least one blocking element is inserted through the first blocking plate and the second blocking plate. [0063] [Fig. 10] is a three-dimensional representation of a third phase of installation of an anti-theft device; Description of the implementation methods

[0064] Only the elements necessary for understanding the invention have been shown. To facilitate reading the drawings, the same elements bear the same reference numerals from one figure to another.

[0065] It should be noted that in this document, the terms "horizontal", "vertical", "lower", "upper", "top", "bottom", "front", "rear", "longitudinal", "transverse", used to describe the device according to the invention refer to this device in use, when it is fixed on a tow ball of a vehicle.

[0066] The invention relates to a device 1 for transporting objects on an outer wall of a vehicle 3. More specifically, the device 1 can be fixed to a tow ball 2 of the vehicle 3 in a removable manner.

[0067] The device 1 according to the invention comprises a supplementary fastening part 11 configured to come into contact with a fastening part 21 of the tow ball 2 of the vehicle 3, the supplementary fastening part 11 being configured to be assembled, or to cooperate, in a non-removable manner on the fastening part 21. In other words, when the device 1 is fixed to the tow ball 2, there is no relative movement between the supplementary fastening part 11 and the fastening part 21. The fastening part 21 becomes integral with the supplementary fastening part 11.

[0068] In Figures 1 and 2, the device 1 comprises two arms 12, 14 articulated to each other by means of a hinge 13. A first end of the first arm 12 comprises the additional fastening portion 11, a second end of the first arm 12 is provided with a portion of the hinge 13. A first end of the second arm 14 is provided with an additional portion of the hinge 13, and a second end of the second arm 14 comprises a tow ball 15. Thus, it is possible to fix an object on this tow ball 15 of device 1 such as for example a bicycle rack.

[0069] The advantage of this tow ball 15 is that it can be moved away from the vehicle 3 to allow access to the vehicle 3. To achieve this, the second arm 14 is rotated around the hinge 13. The tow ball 15, attached to the second arm, is then movable relative to the vehicle 3. A user can then access the vehicle without removing the object attached to the tow ball 15.

[0070] The invention relates more specifically to the complementary fixing part 11 as illustrated in figures 3 to 9.

[0071] The additional fixing part 11 includes in particular a support wall 110 having a notch 111, the notch 111 being configured to be inserted around a groove 22 of the fixing part 21 of the coupling ball 2.

[0072] The notch 111 corresponds to a concave recess in an edge of the support wall 110. The notch 111 has substantially a U-shape, the spacing between two sides of the notch 111 having a dimension equal to a diameter of the groove 22 of the tow ball 2. The notch 111 is configured to be positioned around the groove 22 of the tow ball 2. In other words, the groove 22 of the tow ball 2 is inserted into the notch 111 with a translational movement along an elongation axis of the notch 111, as illustrated in [Fig. 5]. Thus, the fixing part 21 is blocked along the two axes perpendicular to the elongation axis of the support wall 110. The fixing part 21 can be removed from the support wall 110 only with a translational movement in the elongation axis of the notch 111.

[0073] To fix the device 1 onto the tow ball 2, the user performs a method according to the invention which includes a first fixing step. During this step, the fixing part 21 is positioned opposite the complementary fixing part 11 of the device 1, as illustrated in Figures 3 and 4. More specifically, the groove 22 of the tow ball 2 is positioned opposite the notch 111. Then, the groove 22 is inserted into the notch 111, during an insertion step, as illustrated in [Fig. 5].

[0074] Furthermore, the additional fastening part 11 includes a clamping element 120 extending along a clamping axis. The clamping element 120 includes a screw fastening means and, more particularly in the figures, a threaded rod 121 inserted into a screw thread 122. More precisely, the clamping element 120 is formed by the threaded rod 121 which is screwed into the screw thread 122. The threaded rod 121 corresponds to the clamping axis.

[0075] The notch 111 in the support wall 110 is aligned with the clamping axis. The clamping element 120 is positioned opposite the notch 111, and more precisely opposite a center of the notch 111.

[0076] In the figures, the screw thread 122 of the clamping element 120 is integral with the support wall 110. Thus it is not possible to lose the screw thread 122 of the clamping element 120, and more generally the clamping element 120.

[0077] In addition, the clamping element includes a lock nut 124 positioned on the screw-fixing means and more particularly on the threaded rod 121 in order to prevent loosening of said threaded rod 121.

[0078] As illustrated in the figures, the clamping element 120 includes at least one control means, and more specifically a Belleville washer 123 in the figures. The Belleville washer 123 is also called a spring washer, conical washer, or elastic washer. The Belleville washer 123 has a conical shape that flattens when a predetermined force is applied to it. Positioning a Belleville washer 123 on the clamping element 120 ensures sufficient tightening by the user. The user must tighten the clamping element 120 to the predetermined torque until the washer 123 flattens. The washer 123 thus serves as a visual indicator to ensure that the predetermined torque has been applied during the assembly of the device.

[0079] As illustrated in [Fig.6], the method according to the invention includes a clamping step in which the clamping element 120, and more specifically the threaded rod 121, is screwed into the thread 122 after the insertion of the notch around the groove, i.e. after the insertion step. The clamping element 120 then exerts a holding force on a flat 23 of the mounting part 21 of the tow ball 2. The device 1 is fixed to the mounting part 21. The flat 23 is positioned opposite the groove 22 of the mounting part 21. The flat 23 is positioned on an upper part of the mounting part 21 and the groove 22 is positioned on a lower part of the mounting part 21. The pressure exerted by the clamping element 120 prevents the mounting part 21 from being withdrawn from the support wall 110.

[0080] During the tightening step, the torque applied to the clamping element 120 must be sufficient to crush and flatten the Belleville washers 123 as illustrated in [Fig.9]. This torque tightening can be carried out after a locking step.

[0081] In some embodiments, the clamping element 120 is provided with an anti-theft device 140 as illustrated in figures 10 to 12. The anti-theft device 140 is intended to prevent the clamping element 120 from being loosened or unscrewed so that the fixing part 21 cannot be removed from the complementary fixing part 11.

[0082] The anti-theft device 140 includes a ring 141 that fits around the locknut 124 of the threaded rod 121. This ring 141 has a shape complementary to the locknut 124 of the threaded rod 121, such that movement of the locknut 124 causes movement of the ring 141. The ring 141 is extended by a elongation 142 which is provided with an orifice 143. The ring 141 is positioned on the lock nut 124 of the threaded rod 121 so that the orifice 143 of the elongation 142 is positioned around a stop element 170 as illustrated in [Fig.1 1].

[0083] The stop element 170 is an element fixed securely to the first arm 12 of the device 1. For example, in figures 10 to 12, the stop element is a threaded rod.

[0084] Finally, the anti-theft device 140 includes a stop button 144 equipped with a key lock. The stop button 144 is configured to be inserted onto the stop element 170. After the key has been activated, the stop button 144 cannot be removed from the stop element 170 as illustrated in [Fig. 12].

[0085] Thus, the anti-theft device is fixed in a position opposite device 1 so that it is impossible to unscrew the clamping element 120 to remove device 1 without removing the anti-theft device 140.

[0086] The additional fastening portion 11 also includes a first locking plate 130 opposite a second locking plate 150, which are detachably connected to each other by at least two locking elements 160, 161. The locking plates 130, 150 extend opposite, and more precisely parallel to, each other. The locking plates 130, 150 extend perpendicularly to the support wall 110.

[0087] In the figures, the first locking plate 130 and the second locking plate 150 extend transversely to the elongation axis of the notch 111.

[0088] The first blocking plate 130 is fixed to the support wall 110, and the second blocking plate 150 is detachably assembled to the supplementary fastening part 11. In other words, the first blocking plate 130 is fixed relative to the support wall 110. For example, the first blocking plate 130 is welded to the support wall 110. The second blocking plate 150 is movable relative to the first blocking plate 130 when the locking elements 160 are not securing the second blocking plate 150. Thus, the second blocking plate 150 can preferably be completely removed from the supplementary fastening part 11 so that no mechanical link connects the second blocking plate 150 to the first blocking plate 130.

[0089] As shown in [Fig. 3], the first locking plate 130 comprises a first concave portion 131 having a shape complementary to a convex wall 24 of the fastening part 21. The first concave portion 131 corresponds to a portion having a hollow configured to cooperate with the convex wall 24 of the fastening part 21. The first concave portion 131 extends along the clamping axis. The first concave portion 131 therefore has a shape complementary to the convex wall 24 along the clamping axis, such that the convex wall 24 can fit intimately into the first concave portion 131. Thus, when the fastening part 21 is positioned in the additional fixing part 11, the first concave portion 131 comes to fit the convex wall 24 of the fixing part 21.

[0090] As shown in [Fig. 4], the second locking plate 150 comprises a second concave portion 151 having a shape complementary to the convex wall 24 of the fastening part 21. The second concave portion 151 corresponds to a portion having a hollow configured to cooperate with the convex wall 24 of the fastening part 21. The second concave portion 151 extends transversely to the clamping axis. The second concave portion 151 therefore has a shape complementary to the convex wall 24 transversely to the clamping axis, such that the convex wall 24 can fit intimately into the second concave portion 151. Thus, when the fastening part 21 is positioned in the complementary fastening part 11, the second concave portion 151 fits snugly against the convex wall 24 of the fastening part 21.

[0091] In some embodiments, the second blocking plate 150 includes a supplementary support wall 152 extending substantially in a plane parallel to the plane in which the support wall 110 extends when the second blocking plate 150 is fixed to the supplementary fixing part 11. The supplementary support wall 152 includes a supplementary notch 153.

[0092] The locking elements 160, 161 extending transversely to the clamping axis. In some embodiments, at least one of the two locking elements, and preferably both 160, 161, comprises a threaded rod cooperating with a nut.

[0093] The locking step includes a positioning phase in which the second locking plate 150 is positioned opposite the first locking plate 130 so as to come into contact with the convex wall 24 of the fixing part 21. The convex wall 24 is substantially spherical and extends between the flat 23 and the groove 22. In this position, the complementary notch 153 comes into contact with the groove 22.

[0094] Next, the locking step includes a locking phase in which the locking elements 160, 161 are inserted on either side of the fixing part 21, through the first locking plate 130 and the second locking plate 150 so as to connect the second locking plate 150 to the first locking plate 130.

[0095] Thus, the additional fixing part 11 is fixed to the fixing part 21 of the tow ball 2 in a non-removable manner only by means that are simple to implement and inexpensive to manufacture.

[0096] Although the present invention has been described with reference to specific embodiments, it is evident that modifications and changes can be made to these examples without departing from the general scope of the invention as such defined by the claims. In particular, individual features of the various embodiments illustrated / mentioned can be combined in additional embodiments. Therefore, the description and drawings should be considered in an illustrative rather than restrictive sense.

[0097] It is also evident that all the characteristics described with reference to a process are transposable, alone or in combination, to a device, and conversely, all the characteristics described with reference to a device are transposable, alone or in combination, to a process.
