Abstract

A wave energy conversion apparatus 10. The apparatus includes a plurality of modules (30C, 30E). The modules 30C, 30E when coupled together form polygonal perimeter edges of the apparatus (60, fig. 3) along with a structural frame, where ocean waves 50 are received when in use. The modules include multiple columns 90 that are configured to be at their lower openings 110 in fluid communication with the ocean 40 and at their upper ends in fluid communication with a power conversion arrangement 100 that converts air flow occurring in the columns to electrical power. The columns share at least one of: one or more non-hollow dividing walls 120 or one or more non-hollow lateral side walls 122, 124. The long axes of the columns may be at an oblique angle to the water surface. The modules may include 2 or up 5 columns, manufactured from sheet metal. The apparatus may include propellers (70, fig. 3) for orientation and location. Ballast tanks (130, fig. 4b), an anchoring arrangement may also be included. The apparatus may function in a survival mode where one or more columns of the modules is filled with water. A method of assembly and installation is also included.
