Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a dietary supplement composition which contains one or more natural sources of melatonin. It is well known that the hormone melatonin regulates night and day cycles and therefore plays a role in sleep-wake cycles. Synthetic melatonin is commonly taken in a dietary supplement form and is recognised as a beneficial agent in sleep disorders and avoiding jet lag. Synthetic melatonin is available in several forms including tablets, capsules and drinks. Some products are available only on prescription by a medical professional. The present invention seeks to provide a dietary supplement composition which contains one or more natural sources of melatonin to assist with jet lag and sleep. The present inventors have devised a dietary supplement composition which has sufficiently high levels of natural melatonin for providing an effective, over-the-counter product. According to the present invention in one aspect there is provided a dietary supplement composition comprising at least 0.5mg of phytomelatonin per predetermined portion, wherein the dietary supplement composition comprises a concentrate of red cherry, an extract of Goji berry, at least one electrolyte and an amino acid. The electrolyte may be magnesium, sodium, potassium or zinc. The electrolyte may be in the form of a salt. The amino acid may be tryptophan. According to the present invention in a second aspect, there is provided a dietary supplement composition comprising a concentrate of red cherry, an extract of Goji berry, magnesium and tryptophan, wherein the composition comprises at least 0.5mg of phytomelatonin per predetermined portion. Phytomelatonin is the term used for melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) of plant origin. In one embodiment, the composition comprises at least 1.0 mg of phytomelatonin per predetermined portion. The composition is administered orally to assist sleep and / or to reduce jet lag. The phytomelatonin in the composition is natural, meaning that the melatonin is derived from natural source(s). The composition preferably contains no synthetic melatonin. The red cherry concentrate is preferably a concentrate of a sour cherry such as a Montmorency cherry. Any red cherry that has a relatively high level of melatonin may be used. The red cherry concentrate may be a concentrated juice. The magnesium may be a magnesium salt such as Magnesium threonate. Magnesium L-threonate is a preferred magnesium salt. The tryptophan is preferably L-tryptophan. The inventors have surprisingly been able to create a dietary supplement composition which has sufficiently high levels of phytomelatonin to provide effective products for reducing jet lag and / or improving sleep. A unique blend of four key ingredients has been devised to achieve this. A red cherry such as Montmorency cherry is provided in concentrate form together with Goji berry extract and magnesium. Goji berry is also a natural source of melatonin. Magnesium has many beneficial effects including contributing to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue and a normal functioning of the nervous system. It may be used to improve relaxation. The dietary supplement composition also includes tryptophan which is a precursor of melatonin and of the neurotransmitter serotonin, and is known to increase brain serotonin and melatonin levels. It is understood that the beneficial effects of tryptophan will increase over time if it is ingested on a regular basis. The dietary supplement composition may comprise sour cherry juice extract as a further source of melatonin. This juice extract may be obtained from a sour cherry such as Montmorency cherry. The dietary supplement composition may comprise lemon balm extract. The dietary supplement composition may comprise collagen which may be in the form of collagen peptides, particularly hydrolysed collagen peptides. Collagen peptides are beneficial to enhance recovery from exercise, for example, and thus may assist with healthy sleep patterns. The levels of melatonin in the dietary supplement composition of the present invention establish whether the composition is suitable for reducing jet lag or for assisting sleep. In this regard, when the composition comprises at least 0.5 mg of melatonin per predetermined portion, it is permissible to make a health claim under EU Commission Regulation No 432 / 2012 that the melatonin contributes to the alleviation of subjective feelings of jet lag. According to the Regulation, the claim may be used only for food which contains at least 0.5 mg of melatonin per quantified portion. In order to bear the claim, information shall be given to the consumer that the beneficial effect is obtained with a minimum intake of 0.5 mg to be taken close to bedtime on the first day of travel and on the following few days after arrival at the destination When the composition comprises at least 1.0 mg of melatonin per predetermined portion, it is permissible to make a health claim under EU Commission Regulation No 432 / 2012 that the melatonin contributes to the reduction of time taken to fall asleep. According to the Regulation, the claim may be used only for food which contains 1 mg of melatonin per quantified portion. In order to bear the claim, information shall be given to the consumer that the beneficial effect is obtained by consuming 1 mg of melatonin close to bedtime. The dietary supplement composition of the present invention may be used for adults or children. In one example, the dietary supplement composition is formulated for children to assist with sleep and may assist with Delayed Sleep-Wake Disorder (DSWPD). In an embodiment of the present invention, the concentrate of red cherry, the extract of Goji berry, the magnesium and the tryptophan are in the relative proportions of: 25 to 120 grams, preferably 25 to 110 grams of red cherry concentrate; 0.3 to 1.5 grams, preferably 0.3 to 1.4 grams of Goji berry extract; 0.3 to 1.6 grams, preferably 0.4 to 1.5 grams of a magnesium salt; and 0.1 to 0.6 grams, preferably 0.1 to 0.5 grams of tryptophan per predetermined portion. The dietary supplement composition may comprise the relative proportions of 0.6 to 3.0 grams, preferably 0.7 to 2.5 grams of sour cherry juice extract per predetermined portion. The dietary supplement composition may comprise relative proportions of 0.1 to 0.6 grams, preferably 0.1 to 0.5 grams of lemon balm extract per predetermined portion. When the composition comprises at least 0.5 mg of phytomelatonin per predetermined portion and less than 1.0 mg of phytomelatonin per predetermined portion, the concentrate of red cherry, the extract of Goji berry, the magnesium and the tryptophan are preferably in the relative proportions of: 25 to 70 grams, preferably 25 to 55 grams of red cherry concentrate; 0.3 to 0.7 grams, preferably 0.3 to 0.6 grams of Goji berry extract; 0.3 to 1.0 grams, preferably 0.4 to 0.9 grams of a magnesium salt; and 0.1 to 0.3 grams, preferably 0.1 to 0.25 grams of tryptophan per predetermined portion. The dietary supplement composition may comprise relative proportions of 0.6 to 1.2 grams, preferably 0.7 to 1.1 grams of sour cherry juice extract per predetermined portion. The red cherry fruit, once screened for quality, is crushed. It is then heated and cooled before being pressed to extract raw juice which is subsequently concentrated. During a 5 clarification process, pectinases and pectolytic enzymes are degraded and bentonite and fining agents are filtered out. The product is a dark red to purple coloured clear viscous liquid with a flavour and aroma characteristic of red / sour cherry. The Goji Berry extract is made from natural plant material (Lycium barbarum) and the solvent in this ingredient is 20% ethanol (E)). 40 grams of botanical (the fruit) is used to manufacture 100 grams of product. The botanical to solvent ratio is 1:2.5. The solvent in the sour cherry juice extract is 20% ethanol.
