Claims

1. A communication system supporting subband full duplex operation, the communicationsystem comprising at least one wireless communication unit (550) communicating with at least one base station (510), wherein the at least one wireless communication unit (550) is arranged to: receive and process a message from the at least one base station (510); and, in response to the message:measure cross-link interference, CLI due to subband full duplex operation within the communication system in one of: a radio resource control, RRC, idle mode of operation, RRC inactive mode of operation;establish a connection with the at least one base station (510); andreport CLI measurements to the at least one base station (510) when in an RRC idle mode of operation or in a RRC inactive mode of operation.

2. The wireless communication system (100) of Claim 1, wherein the message received by the at least one wireless communication unit (550) instructs the at least one wireless communication unit (550) to measure subband full duplex, SBFD, CLI of at least one other wireless communication unit.

3. The wireless communication system (100) of Claim 2, wherein the at least one wireless communication unit (550) is configured to transmit and receive in the same timeslot when configured to measure sub-band full duplex, SBFD, CLI in RRC idle and RRC inactive modes.

The wireless communication system (100) of any preceding Claim, wherein, prior to receiving the message, the at least one wireless communication unit (550) is arranged to transmit a first message to the at least one base station that indicates the at least one wireless communication unit (550) is able to transition to one of: an RRC idle mode of operation, an RRC inactive mode of operation, and measure CLI.

5. The wireless communication system (100) of any preceding Claim, wherein CLI measurements performed by the at least one wireless communication unit (550) comprise a measurement of at least one communication resource where other wireless communication units are transmitting data in a connected mode.

6. The wireless communication system (100) of Claim 5, wherein the at least one resource comprises at least one of: a layer-1, a layer-2, a layer-3 based communication resource.

7. The wireless communication system (100) of Claim 5 or Claim 6, wherein the at least one communication resource comprises periodic communication resources or semi-persistent communication resources.

8. The wireless communication system (100) of Claim 7, wherein the at least one periodic communication resource or semi-persistent communication resource comprises a Sounding Reference Signal (SRS) resource.

9. The wireless communication system (100) of Claim 7, wherein the at least one periodic communication resource or semi-persistent communication resource comprises a time-bandwidth resource that enables the at least one wireless communication unit (550) to measure received signal strength in communication resources where other wireless communication units are transmitting, and wherein the report transmitted by the at least one wireless communication unit (550) comprises CLI received signal strength measurements.

10. The wireless communication system (100) of any preceding Claim, wherein the at least one wireless communication unit (550) being configured to establish a connection with the at least one base station (510) comprises the at least one wireless communication unit (550) being configured to perform one of:receive a trigger to perform RRC Setup or RRC resume;transmit a RRCSetupRequest message and receive in response thereto an RRCSetup message, ortransmit a RRCResumeRequest message and receive in response thereto an RRCResume message.

The wireless communication system (100) of Claim 10 wherein, in response to a receipt of a RRCSetup message or a RRCResume message, the at least one wireless communication unit (550) is configured to transmit a RRCSetupComplete message or an RRCResumeComplete message to the at least one base station (510) that indicated that CLI measurements are available.

12. The wireless communication system (100) of Claim 11 wherein, in response to a transmission of a RRCSetupComplete message or an RRCResumeComplete message to the at least one base station (510) the at least one wireless communication unit (550) is configured to:receive (730) an UEInformationRequest message that indicates a CLI measurement request; andtransmit (735) an UEInformationResponse message to the at least one base station (510) with the CLI measurements.

13. The wireless communication system (100) of Claim 10, wherein the trigger is one of: arrival of data in a receiver buffer of the at least one wireless communication unit (550), or a procedure unrelated to a measurement of CLI.

The wireless communication system (100) of Claim 10, wherein the receiver and processor are configured to receive a RRC Release message that comprises an indication for the at least one wireless communication unit (550) to measure CLI in RRC idle or RRC inactive and in response thereto the at least one wireless communication unit (550) measures CLI in idle or inactive mode.

15. The wireless communication system (100) of any preceding Claim, wherein the receiver and processor are configured to receive the message from the at least one base station (510) that broadcasts system information that configures the at least one wireless communication unit (550) to perform idle mode CLI measurements.

16. The wireless communication system (100) of Claim 15, wherein the message that broadcasts system information is a field in a system information block 11, SIB11 message.

17. A wireless communication unit (550) configured to communicate with at least one base station, in a communication system that supports subband full duplex operation, the wireless communication unit (550) comprises:a receiver configured to receive a message from the at least one base station (510);a processor, coupled to the receiver, and configured to process the message and, in response to the message:measure cross-link interference, CLI due to subband full duplex operation within the communication system in one of: a radio resource control, RRC, idle mode of operation, RRC inactive mode of operation; andestablish a connection with the at least one base station (510); anda transmitter, operably coupled to the processor and configured to transmit a report of CLI measurements to the at least one base station (510) when the wireless communication unit (550) is in one of: an RRC idle mode of operation, an RRC inactive mode of operation.

18. A method for a wireless communication unit (550) configured to communicate with at least one base station in a communication system that supports subband full duplex operation, the method comprising:receiving a message from the at least one base station (510);processing the message from the at least one base station (510) and, in response to the message;measuring cross-link interference, CLI due to subband full duplex operation within the communication system in one of: a radio resource control, RRC, idle mode of operation, RRC inactive mode of operation;establishing a connection with the at least one base station (510); andtransmitting a report of CLI measurements to the at least one base station (510) when the wireless communication unit (550) is in one of: an RRC idle mode of operation, an RRC inactive mode of operation.

19. A wireless base station (510) configured to communicate with at least one wireless communication unit (550), in a communication system that supports subband full duplex operation, the wireless base station (510) comprises:a transmitter configured to transmitter a message to the at least one wireless communication unit (550), wherein the message comprises an instruction for the at least one wireless communication unit (550) to:measure cross-link interference, CLI, within the communication system in one of: a radio resource control, RRC, idle mode of operation, RRC inactive mode of operation;a receiver, operably coupled to a processor and configured to:receive a connection request from, and establish a connection with, the at least one wireless communication unit (550); andreceive a report of CLI measurements from the wireless communication unit (550) when the wireless communication unit (550) is in an RRC idle mode of operation or in a RRC inactive mode of operation.

20. The wireless base station (510) of Claim 19 wherein the receiver is arranged to receive initially a first message that indicates the at least one wireless communication unit (550) is ableto transition to one of: an RRC idle mode of operation, an RRC inactive mode of operation, and measure CLI.

21. A method for a wireless base station (510) configured to communicate with at least one wireless communication unit (550), in a communication system that supports subband full duplex operation, the method comprising:transmitting a message to the at least one wireless communication unit (550), wherein the message comprises an instruction for the at least one wireless communication unit (550) to:measure cross-link interference, CLI, within the communication system in one of: a radio resource control, RRC, idle mode of operation, RRC inactive mode of operation;receiving a connection request from, and establishing a connection with, the at least one wireless communication unit (550); andreceiving a report of CLI measurements from the wireless communication unit (550) in response to the message when the wireless communication unit (550) is in an RRC idle mode of operation or in a RRC inactive mode of operation.

22. The method for wireless base station (510) of Claim 21 further comprising receiving initially a first message that indicates the at least one wireless communication unit (550) is able to transition to one of: an RRC idle mode of operation, an RRC inactive mode of operation, and measure CLI.
