Abstract

A microbial electrolysis cell 100 is formed from a plurality of layers 132,134,136 where the outer layers 132 that are sealed together (using, for example, heat sealing, ultrasonic sealing or adhesive) to form a gas-tight pouch 110. Thus the anode 130, cathode chamber 134 and gas diffusion layers may be present. A resilient material may be located in the hydrogen gas collection chamber. A plurality of pouches can be stacked together in a tank with anodes interleaved between neighbouring pouches. An associated tank is also detailed to hold the microbial cell pouches using baffles.
