Abstract
A computer-implemented method for generating a 3D image based on a 2D image. The method comprises obtaining a 2D image (S402) from a collection of 2D images (S400); determining a value for a selection metric (S404) for the obtained 2D image, where the selection metric is indicative of suitability of the 2D image for generating a 3D image and the selection metric is at least in part based on a depth map for the 2D image; selecting the 2D image when the determined value indicates that the 2D image is suitable for generating a 3D image (S408); and generating a 3D image for the selected 2D image. Optionally, the method further comprises generating depth embeddings for the 2D image; where the depth embeddings are usable to generate a depth map comprising a depth value for each pixel in the 2D image; the selection metric comprises a depth cluster tightness metric and determining a value of this metric comprises using the depth embeddings to determine at least one of the depth cluster tightness metric, where the tightness metric evaluates similarity of depth values of pixels in each layer of the obtained image.
