Abstract
A method of determining energy consumption of a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system 104 installed within a building 100. The method comprises receiving an input vector that comprises an output from each of a plurality of sensors 108, 112 over a time period, with the sensors providing sensor data relating to the operation of the HVAC system, and the sensor data comprising at least an internal temperature 108 of one or more parts of the building during the time period, and instances of operation of the HVAC system during the time period. A machine learning algorithm and based on the input vector determines one or more building occupant controlled parameters affecting energy consumption of the HVAC system occurring during the time period; and an efficiency of use of the HVAC system is determined. Occupant controlled parameters may include occupant controlled events and / or occupant controlled settings of the HVAC system. The parameters may include one or more of sudden ventilation of an area in the building, an inappropriate internal temperature setpoint, a high rate of change of target temperature, human activity, thermostat location and use of a further heating or cooling source.
