Wound protection cage

Abstract

A wound protection device (400) is for providing a protective shield for an animal or human wound. It has a cage (401) with a rim (403), the rim which is concave in end view, and a three dimensional mesh (402) extending distally from the rim. There are engagement features (404, 406) on the rim, and a pair of opposed tunnels (405) for passage of an intravenous line at either end. The device has a separate skin-engaging base (450) also of concave shape in end view and having features (454, 457, 452) for engaging corresponding engagement features of the cage so that they are inter-engaged in use. The cage comprises at least two pairs of opposed slots (406, 407) for receiving a trained strap (475) to press the cage against the base and to secure the device to a human or animal. The arrangement of the slots allows a strap to be trained over the base and interwoven into the slots so that it presses the cage against the base with the desired pressure and secures the whole device in place. Alignment of the base and the cage is particularly simple and accurate because the base has ridges (457) which engage in the cage rim slots (406).
