In the illustrated embodiments, where possible, like reference numerals are used to designate like parts, but with the addition of the prefixes "300"; "400" to indicate that these features belong to the fourth and fifth embodiments, respectively. Because the alternative embodiments share many common features with the embodiments of Figures 1-6, only the differences from the embodiments shown in Figures 1-6 are described in more detail.

[0130] 7A and 7B show a blank 310 with a main panel 312 that forms an engagement panel 312 of an item engagement device 390 (see FIG. 8). The device in FIG. 8 is an identification tag, such as a keg ring. Optionally, the main panel 312 is hexagonal in shape, although in other embodiments other shapes may be used, such as, but not limited to, a square, a pentagon, an octagon, a dodecagon, a hexagon, and a circle.

[0131] The main panel 312 includes a single item engaging structure RT. The item engaging structure RT includes an item receiving opening defined in part by the cover panel 314.

[0132] The article engaging structure RT is disposed about the cover panel 314 and comprises a plurality of engagement tines 340a, 340c, 340e which form the periphery of the article receiving opening.

[0133] The plurality of tines 340a, 340c, 340e are hinged to the main panel 312 by fold lines. The fold lines may be defined by a plurality of cuts 343, 345. The plurality of cuts 343, 345 may define or approximate a circle or a portion of a circle.

[0134] The article engagement structure RT may comprise a plurality of first complete teeth 340a disposed about the cover panel 314. Each first tooth 340a comprises an engagement edge E1 opposite the hinge edge. The engagement edge E1 is defined by a linear portion of the cut forming the cover panel 314. Each engagement edge E1 defines a portion of a polygon, such as, but not limited to, a hexagon. In some embodiments, the cut forming the cover panel 314 may be at least partially arcuate in shape. Each complete tooth 340a comprises a pair of side edges, the side edges being defined by cuts 341 extending radially outward from respective vertices of the polygon, i.e., extending from respective vertices between pairs of adjacent linear portions of the cut forming the cover panel 314. The cuts 341 are disposed to diverge from one another and define an angle therebetween, which may be approximately 22.5°.

[0135] The article engagement structure RT may comprise a plurality of first peripheral cuts 343. Each of the plurality of first peripheral cuts 343 is aligned with one of the radial cuts 341 such that said one or a notional extension of said first peripheral cuts 343 bisects each of the plurality of first peripheral cuts 343.

[0136] The first complete tooth 340a may include a pair of first peripheral cuts 343 spaced apart from and bisecting the respective radial cuts 341 to form interlocking notches or bridge portions N between pairs of adjacently disposed teeth 340a, 340c, 340e. Each of the plurality of first peripheral cuts 343 may be linear in shape. Alternatively, each of the plurality of first peripheral cuts 343 may be non-linear or arcuate in shape.

[0137] The article engaging structure RT may include a plurality of second peripheral cuts 345. Each of the plurality of second peripheral cuts 345 is disposed between and spaced apart from a pair of the plurality of first peripheral cuts 343 to form a pair of interlocking notches or bridge portions between the teeth 340a, 340c, 340e and the main panel 312. The pair of interlocking notches or bridge portions provides a hinged or foldable connection between each of the teeth 340a, 340c, 340e and the main panel 312. Each of the plurality of second peripheral cuts 345 may be linear in shape. Alternatively, each of the plurality of second peripheral cuts 345 may be non-linear or arcuate in shape.

[0138] In the illustrated embodiment, the radius of curvature of each of the plurality of second peripheral cuts 345 is equal to the radius of curvature of each of the plurality of first peripheral cuts 343, but may be different in other embodiments.

[0139] The article engagement structure RT comprises at least one, two, or more connecting teeth 340c. The illustrated embodiment comprises four connecting teeth 340c, each connected or coupled to a bridge or connecting portion 342. In the illustrated embodiment, a first or proximal end of the bridge or connecting portion 342 is connected in part to the connecting teeth 340c and in part to the main panel 312. The first end of the bridge or connecting portion 342 may be connected to a side edge of the connecting teeth 340c, the side edge being disposed adjacent to the engagement edge of the connecting teeth 340c. A second or distal end of the bridge or connecting portion 342 is directly connected or coupled to the cover panel 314. The bridge or connecting portion 342 may be substantially "Z" or "S" shaped. The bridge or connecting portion 342 comprises a generally radially extending section and a generally circumferentially extending section.

[0140] The cover panel 314 includes at least one stopper tab 344 that provides an end stop against which the article B may abut. The stopper tab 344 may abut or engage with a periphery of the port of the article B. In the illustrated embodiment, the article B includes a fill port C (also known as a "spigot"), best shown in FIG. 12. The port C includes a self-closing valve, which may take the form of a ball bearing that is held in a closed configuration by fluid pressure within the article B. The port C is adapted to receive a coupler for filling the article B and for dispensing a product from within the article B. In the illustrated embodiment, the blank 310 includes a plurality of stopper tabs 344, including, but not limited to, four stopper tabs 344. Pairs of the stopper tabs 344 are disposed substantially opposite one another, i.e., diametrically opposed.

[0141] The bridge or connecting portion 342 may be positioned so as to be included within a notional circle NC forming a hinge connection between the plurality of teeth 340a, 340c, 340e and the main panel 312. That is, the bridge or connecting portion 342 is included within the location of the plurality of teeth 340a, 340c, 340e. Portions 371a, 373a of the cuts 371, 373 forming the outermost edges of the connecting portion 342 are offset with respect to the notional circle NC forming said hinge connection.

[0142] At least a portion 371b, 373b of the cut forming the inner edge of the connecting portion 342 also at least partially defines the stopper tab 344, with the connecting portion 342 and the stopper tab 344 sharing a common cut. The stopper tab 344 is nested or form-fitting within the connecting portion 342. The stopper tab 344 is at least partially disposed between a radially extending portion of the connecting portion 342 and the connecting tab 340c to which the connecting portion 342 is connected.

[0143] Partial tooth 340e may abut or be disposed adjacent to a radially extending portion of coupling portion 342.

[0144] 8 shows a blank 310 attached to an article B to form an engagement device, such as a cap 390. The cap 390 includes a cover panel 314 to protect a port C of the article B, optionally a beverage keg. This may prevent or inhibit the ingress of dust, debris, or other foreign matter into the port C. The cap 390 may provide a surface for the display of information, advertising, or branding.

[0145] When engaged with port C, cover panel 314, along with connecting portion or bridge strap 342 and tines 340a, 340c, 340e, are displaced outwardly from main panel 312. Teeth 340a, 340c, 340e engage a flange, protrusion, or lip of port C to inhibit removal or separation of cap 390 from item B.

[0146] 9A and 9B show a blank 410 with a main panel 412 forming an engagement panel 412 of an item engagement device 490 (see FIG. 10), which may optionally be an identification tag with an integrated cap, according to another embodiment. Optionally, the main panel 412 is hexagonal in shape, although in other embodiments other shapes may be used, such as, but not limited to, a square, a pentagon, an octagon, a dodecagon, a hexagon, and a circle. The main panel 412 is larger in dimensions than that of the embodiment of FIGS. 7A and 7B.

[0147] The main panel 412 includes a single article engaging structure RT substantially similar in construction to the article engaging structure RT of Figures 7A and 7B, and will not be described in further detail.

[0148] The item engaging structure RT is surrounded by a line of frangibility or severability 409 that forms a removable portion 408 of the main panel 412. The removable portion 408 and the item engaging structure RT therewith form a cap or cover 490 for a port C of an item B as shown in Figures 10 and 11. Item B may optionally be a beverage keg.

[0149] A portion of main panel 412 outside of possible cut line 409 forms collar 412B. Collar 412B is separable or removable from cap 490 along possible cut line 409, as shown in Figures 11 and 12. In Figure 12, cap 490 has been removed from port C.

[0150] Separation or removal of cap 490 along possible cut lines 409 from main panel 412 creates an opening OP in main panel 412 large enough to accommodate port C such that annulus 412B can seat on top panel T of item B with port C passing through opening OP. Main panel 412 is sized to be received within a recess or opening in the top of item B. The recess in item B provides an upstanding annular wall with one or more handle openings H.

[0151] The tear line 409 may be shaped to provide a tab 408T, which may provide a handle to facilitate removal of the cap 490 from the port C.

[0152] Ring portion 412B may serve as an identification tag to provide an additional surface for displaying information, advertising, or branding, which advantageously remains attached to item B after removal of cap 490.

[0153] 13 and 14, an additional embodiment of the present disclosure is shown. In the illustrated embodiment, where possible, like reference numerals have been used to designate like parts, but with the addition of the prefix "500" to indicate that these features belong to the sixth embodiment, respectively. Because the alternative embodiment shares many common features with the prior embodiment, only the differences from the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1-12 will be described in more detail.

[0154] Figure 13 shows a blank 510 with a main panel 512 that forms an engagement panel 512 of an item engagement device 590 (see Figure 14). The engagement panel 512 serves as an identification tag such as a keg ring, while the cover panel 514 serves as a cap to cover a spout / valve / port of a keg as shown in Figure 14. Optionally, the main panel 512 is hexagonal in shape, although in other embodiments other shapes may be used such as, but not limited to, a square, a pentagon, an octagon, a dodecagon, a hexagon, and a circle.

[0155] The main panel 512 includes a single item engaging structure RT. The item engaging structure RT includes an item receiving opening defined in part by a cover panel 514. The cover panel 514 is cut out from the main panel 512.

[0156] The article engaging structure RT is disposed about the cover panel 514 and comprises a plurality of engagement tines 540a, 540e, 540f which form the perimeter of the article receiving opening.

[0157] The plurality of tines 540a, 540e, 540f are hinged to the main panel 512 by fold lines. The fold lines may be defined by a plurality of cuts.

[0158] The article engagement structure RT comprises at least a pair of a first nonlinear slit 580a and a second nonlinear slit 580b, each of which comprises a first end region 581, an opposing second end region 583, and an intermediate region 582. The illustrated embodiment comprises four nonlinear slits 580, 580a, 580b. The first region 581 and the intermediate region 582 of each of the first nonlinear slit 580a and the second nonlinear slit 580b form a portion of the cover panel 514. The first end region 581 of the first slit 580a is disposed at a position radially inward of the second end region 583 of the second slit 580b. The intermediate region 582 of each of the first nonlinear slit 580a and the second nonlinear slit 580b forms a radially inner, distal, free, or engagement edge of at least one of the engagement teeth 540a, 540e, 540f.

[0159] The first end region 581 of the first slit 580a and the second end region 583 of the second slit 580b extend between them aligned with but spaced apart from one another to form a bridge strap 542 for connection between the cover panel 514 and the main panel 512 or, in an alternative embodiment, one of the engagement teeth 540a, 540e, 540f.

[0160] The bridge strap 542 comprises a first portion or section 542a extending generally circumferentially relative to the article receiving opening. The bridge strap 542 comprises a second portion or section 542b extending generally circumferentially relative to the article receiving opening and disposed radially outward of the first section 542a (i.e., the second portion or section 542b is further from the center of the article receiving opening than the first portion or section 542a). The first section 542a and the second section 542b are joined together by a third portion or section 542c, which extends generally radially relative to the article receiving opening. This arrangement may be advantageous to allow the main panel 512 to be spaced farther from the cover panel 514 (at a lower or higher elevation) when applied to an article without the bridge strap 542 having to extend radially significantly beyond the article receiving opening. In this manner, the article engaging structure RT has a compact footprint.

[0161] At least one of engagement teeth 540a, 540e, 540f has a side edge defined by a radial cut line 585 that extends generally radially relative to the article receiving opening. The radial cut line 585 extends from an intermediate region 582 of each one of the first nonlinear slit 580a and the second nonlinear slit 580b.

[0162] The first nonlinear slit 580a includes a diverging section 584 extending from a first end section 581 of the first nonlinear slit 580a. At least a portion of the diverging section 584 is disposed radially outwardly of and extends alongside a second end section 583 of the second slit 580b.

[0163] The cover panel 514 includes at least one stop tab 544 for resting on the article perimeter R (see FIG. 15 ). The at least one stop tab 544 extends radially outward from the cover panel 514 and is defined at least in part by a first end region 581 of the first nonlinear slit 580a. The illustrated embodiment includes four stop tabs 544, each defined by a first end region 581 of the nonlinear slit 580a.

[0164] The stopper tab 544 defines a recess in the bridge strap 542 that extends radially outward from the port C and may engage or receive a rim, ridge, protrusion, or lip that extends circumferentially at least partially around the port C. In this manner, the device 590 may be secured to the port C.

[0165] The main panel 512 of the device or keg ring 590 may be held over the top of the item B, barrel or keg (not shown in FIG. 15). The main panel 512 may not, at least initially, be in direct contact with the top of the item, although this may change as the device or keg ring 590 ages or absorbs moisture.

[0166] The engagement teeth 540a, 540e, 540f may be configured to engage a sidewall of port C to stabilize the device 590.

[0176] The blanks 10; 110; 210; 310; 410; 510 include at least a paperboard substrate. The paperboard substrate material may be selected from any conventional paperboard, for example, ranging in weight from about 10 pt. and up, preferably from about 16 pt. to about 28 pt. (0.028 in. / about 0.7 mm). Examples of such substrates are 27 point (pt.) SBS cardboard (a solid bleached sulfate board coated on one side under the trade name PrintKote®) or CNK® cardboard (Coated Natural Kraft® - an unbleached kraft board with a clay coat on one side under the trade name CarrierKote™) manufactured by the WestRock® Company. The paperboard substrate may be bleached or unbleached cardboard. The cardboard may be coated on at least one side, and optionally the side opposite the lamination, with a conventional coating selected for compatibility with the printing method and cardboard composition.

[0177] The blank 10;110;210;310;410;510 may include a tear-resistant layer laminated to the paperboard layer. The blank 10;110;210;310;510;610;710;810 may optionally include an adhesive layer between the paperboard substrate and the tear-resistant layer. The tear-resistant layer may be disposed over the uncoated side of the paperboard substrate and may be formed of a polymeric material and secured to the substrate. The tear-resistant layer provides toughness to the laminate structure. Suitable tear-resistant materials may include, but are not limited to, tear-resistant laminate sheet materials such as NATRALOCK®, which may include layers of n-axis oriented films such as MYLAR®, which are biaxially oriented polyester, oriented nylon, cross-laminated polyolefin, or high density polyolefin. The orientation and cross-lamination structure of these materials contribute to the tear resistance properties, which may also be attributed to the chemistry of the tear resistant materials, such as extruded metallocene-catalyzed polyethylene (mPE).

[0178] Alternatively, the tear resistant layer may be a layer of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE). In embodiments where linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) or mPE is used, it is not necessary to incorporate an adhesive layer. Other suitable materials having a high degree of tear resistance may be used.

[0179] The adhesive layer may be formed from a polyolefin material, such as low density polyethylene (LDPE). The adhesive layer may be disposed between the substrate and the tear resistant layer to secure the tear resistant layer to the substrate.

[0180] It will be understood that various modifications can be made within the scope of the invention. For example, the size and shape of the panels and openings can be adjusted to accommodate items of different sizes or shapes. Shoulder panels may be omitted. The invention is not limited to top-engaging types of cartons, and the invention may be used with other carton styles, such as, but not limited to, open top crates, lidded or closed top crates.

[0181] It will be appreciated that, as used herein, references to directions such as "top," "bottom," "bottom," "front," "back," "end," "side," "inward," "outward," "above," and "below" do not necessarily limit each panel to such orientation, but may merely serve to distinguish these panels from one another.

[0182] As used herein, the terms "hinge connection" and "fold line" refer to any manner of line that forms a hinge feature of the blank, facilitates folding portions of the blank relative to one another, or otherwise indicates the optimal location for folding a panel of the blank. References to "hinge connection" should not necessarily be construed as referring only to a single fold line, and in fact a hinge connection may be formed from two or more fold lines, each of which may be either straight / linear or curved / curved in shape. When linear fold lines form a hinge connection, they may be disposed parallel to one another or may be slightly angled relative to one another. When curved fold lines form a hinge connection, they may cross one another to form a shaped panel within the area enclosed by the curved fold line. A typical example of such a hinge connection may comprise a pair of arched or bowed fold lines that cross at two points to form an elliptical panel between them. The hinge connection may be formed from one or more linear fold lines and one or more curvilinear fold lines. A typical example of such a hinge connection may comprise a combination of a linear fold line and an arched or bowed fold line that intersect at two points to form a half-moon shaped panel therebetween.

[0183] As used herein, the term "fold line" may refer to one of the following: a perforation line, an embossed line, a debossed line, a perforation line, a short slit line, a half-cut line, a single half-cut, an interrupted cut, an aligned slit line, a perforation line, and any combination of the foregoing options.

[0184] It should be understood that each of the hinge connections and fold lines may each include elements formed in the blank substrate, including perforations, perforation lines, short slit lines, half-cut lines, single half-cuts, cuts, interrupted cuts, slits, perforations, embossed lines, debossed lines, any combination thereof, and the like. The elements may be sized and arranged to provide the desired functionality. For example, perforation lines may be sized or designed with a degree of weakness to form fold and / or tear lines. Perforation lines may be designed to facilitate folding while resisting tearing, to facilitate folding while facilitating tearing with greater effort, or to facilitate tearing with less effort.

[0185] The phrase "in registration with" as used herein refers to the alignment of two or more elements in an erected carton, such as an opening formed in a first of two overlapping panels and a second opening formed in a second of two overlapping panels. The elements that are in registration with one another may be aligned with one another in the thickness direction of the overlapping panels. For example, when an opening in a major panel is "in registration with" a second opening in a second panel that is placed in an overlapping arrangement with the major panel, an edge of the opening may extend along at least a portion of an edge of the second opening and may be aligned with the second opening in the thickness direction of the first and second panels.
