Apparatus and method for directing airflow in three dimensions to cool system components

The invention provides forced-air cooling to components mounted on circuit boards oriented in a side-to-side direction in a system. Airflow may enter and exit the system through the front and back (or vice-versa), rather than the sides of the system. In one embodiment, airflow entering the front of the system is re-directed in an upward direction, then split to form airflow branches traversing in a side-to-side direction. The airflow branches traverse across the surfaces of circuit boards, then are directed in an upward direction and out the back (or front) of the system. The airflow branches preferably move substantially the same volume of air per unit of time.

Linear illumination lens with Fresnel facets

A linear Fresnel lens for LED illumination is configured initially by using a meridional flux-assignment method and is then corrected by assessing the three-dimensional flux distribution of individual facets. The facet angles are slightly altered as required to produce uniformity. A variety of specialized lens shapes are generated, such as for illuminating shelves in commercial refrigerator food-display cases. The lens shapes are suitably thin for economical production by extrusion.

Refrigerator incorporating french doors with rotating mullion bar

A refrigerator includes French-style doors and a rotating mullion. The rotating mullion is mounted to one of the French-style doors through first and second hinge members. Each of the first and second hinge members include first and second hinge elements having corresponding cam members. The cam members include multiple lobes and extend about hinge pins that define an axis of rotation for the mullion. The multiple lobes actually define first and second detent positions for the rotating mullion. A spring biases the first cam member against the second cam member so that the rotating mullion is positively maintained in either the first or second position. The mullion is formed from mating halves, each including a portion of an integrally formed pin element. The pin element travels within a guide element to automatically rotate the mullion between the first and second positions during use.
