687 results about "Unit of time" patented technology

A unit of time or midst unit is any particular time interval, used as a standard way of measuring or expressing duration. The base unit of time in the International System of Units (SI), and by extension most of the Western world, is the second, defined as about 9 billion oscillations of the caesium atom.

Computerized medical diagnostic and treatment advice system including network access

A system and method for providing computerized, knowledge-based medical diagnostic and treatment advice. The medical advice is provided to the general public over networks, such as a telephone network or a computer network. The invention also includes a stand-alone embodiment that may utilize occasional connectivity to a central computer by use of a network, such as the Internet. New authoring languages, interactive voice response and speech recognition are used to enable expert and general practitioner knowledge to be encoded for access by the public. “Meta” functions for time-density analysis of a number of factors regarding the number of medical complaints per unit of time are an integral part of the system. A re-enter feature monitors the user's changing condition over time. A symptom severity analysis helps to respond to the changing conditions. System sensitivity factors may be changed at a global level or other levels to adjust the system advice as necessary.

Apparatus and method for directing airflow in three dimensions to cool system components

The invention provides forced-air cooling to components mounted on circuit boards oriented in a side-to-side direction in a system. Airflow may enter and exit the system through the front and back (or vice-versa), rather than the sides of the system. In one embodiment, airflow entering the front of the system is re-directed in an upward direction, then split to form airflow branches traversing in a side-to-side direction. The airflow branches traverse across the surfaces of circuit boards, then are directed in an upward direction and out the back (or front) of the system. The airflow branches preferably move substantially the same volume of air per unit of time.

Sliding input user interface

A method, apparatus, user interface and computer program product for using a device to detect a signal corresponding to a sliding input on a touch sensitive area of the device, the sliding input being for a time setting adjustment. A time unit corresponding to a start point of the sliding input is determined, and if the signal indicates that the sliding input is substantially in a first direction, a time setting of the corresponding time unit is increased by a pre-defined increment, and if the signal indicates that the sliding input is substantially in a second direction, the time setting of the corresponding time unit is decreased by a pre-defined increment. Feedback signals are provided at regular intervals of length, along the route of the sliding movement. Those feedback signals can be sensed or felt, which helps in using the device without looking all the time at the screen, which enables the eyes-free-operation of the device for most time settings, so that they can be made with a single hand; with the thumb of the hand which holds the device.

Method and apparatus for preparing signals to be compared to establish predistortion at the input of an amplifier

The invention relates to a method of preparing signals (X and Y) to be compared to establish predistortion at the input of an amplifier (12), the signals comprising a signal (X) before amplification and a signal (Y) after amplification by said amplifier. Preparation includes time aligning (22) the signal before amplification (X) with the signal after amplification (Y) before using them to establish said predistortion. The invention preferably operates in two stages, namely a stage of coarse time alignment, in which the signal before amplification (X) is subjected to a time delay comprising an integer number of first time units, and a stage of fine time alignment, in which a delay or advance value of a fraction of the first time unit is determined.

Method for analysis of abnormal body tremors

A method useful for evaluating abnormal body tremors wherein a subject is positioned onto a support surface and one or more components of the load exerted by the subject upon the support surface are measured. Simultaneously, the cardiac activity of the subject is also recorded and the time interval between each consecutive heartbeat is computed. The measured load output is modified to normalize the weight of the subject and then plotted against a modified frequency wherein each time interval between heartbeats represent a unit of time and a selected equal number of force measurement samples are interpolated between each heartbeat. The frequency spectrum analysis of such a modified power spectrum graph yields information about body tremor which can be compared to a prior analysis of the same subject or to the same analysis of a standard. The standard is created using the identical method upon, preferably, a sufficient number of subjects known to be free of abnormal body tremor to yield an average measure useful for comparison and diagnostic purposes.

System, method and program for migrating files retrieved from over a network to secondary storage

Disclosed is a system, method, and program for caching files retrieved from a server over a network. A computer system receives a request from a requesting computer system for a file maintained on the server. The computer system is capable of communicating with the server via the network. The computer system retrieves the requested file from the server over the network and stores a copy of the requested file in a primary storage. The computer system further returns another copy of the requested file to the requesting computer system. The computer system determines retrieved files to migrate from the primary storage to a secondary storage and migrates the determined retrieved files from the primary storage to the secondary storage. To determine the files to migrate from primary storage to secondary storage, the computer system may determine a distribution of file requests per unit of time according to file size for files maintained in the primary storage and the secondary storage. The computer system then processes the determined distribution and a provided maximum number of file requests per unit of time to determine a minimum file size for migration. Files having a size greater than the minimum file size for migration are migrated from the primary storage device to the secondary storage device.

System, method and program to limit rate of transferring messages from suspected spammers

A system, method and program product for managing e-mails from a source suspected of sending spam. The e-mails are received at a firewall or router en route to a mail server. A determination is made whether a source has sent an e-mail which exhibits characteristics of spam. In response, subsequent e-mails from the source destined for the mail server are rate-limiting at the firewall or router such that the firewall or router limits a rate at which the subsequent e-mails are forwarded from the firewall or router to the mail server. The rate is predetermined and less than a maximum rate at which the firewall or router can physically forward e-mails to the mail server absent the rate limit. A determination is made whether another source has sent another e-mail which exhibits more characteristics of spam than the first said e-mail. In response, subsequent e-mails from this other source are blocked at the firewall or router. The rate limit can be a limit on a number of e-mails per unit of time from the source that will be forwarded from the firewall or router to the mail server.

Synchronous servo channel for longitudinal position detection and position error signal generation in tape drive systems

A fully synchronous longitudinal position (LPOS) detection system is provided for improving the reliability of servo channels in tape systems. The system is based on the interpolation of the servo channel output signal, which is sampled by an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) at a fixed sampling rate, using a clock at a nominal frequency, so that interpolated signal samples are obtained at a predetermined fixed rate, independent of tape velocity. This predetermined fixed rate is defined in terms of samples per unit of length, as opposed to samples per unit of time, which is the measure of the ADC sampling rate. The resolution with which the servo channel signal is obtained at the interpolator output is thus determined by the step interpolation distance.

Time syncrhonization of data

A device external to an implantable medical device (IMD) is provided with an accurate reference clock. The programmer receives time data from the IMD and compares that data to time data from the reference clock. Based on this comparison, the programmer determines how much a clock within the IMD is drifting per unit of time. A correction factor is generated so that data received from the IMD can then be correlated to the correct reference time.
