[0008] (The knowledge and other information that formed the basis of this disclosure) For example, a display device for an electronic device such as a notebook computer (laptop PC) includes a housing having a front case and a rear case, and a display module built into the housing. The display device has a configuration in which a display surface of the display module is exposed through a display opening formed inside a frame of the front case.
[0009] In the above-mentioned configuration of the display device, for example, the peripheral portion of the display module and the frame portion of the front case are adhesively supported by double-sided tape or the like. The display opening of the front case is configured to have a large opening so as to secure as large a display area as possible, but the frame portion of the front case is narrow. The rigidity of the front case having a narrow frame portion is lower than the rigidity of the rear case extending in a planar shape. A configuration in which the display module is adhesively supported by a front case with low rigidity has the problem of making little contribution to improving the rigidity of the display module.
[0010] Therefore, the present inventors have investigated electronic devices for solving the above problems and have arrived at the present disclosure.
[0011] Hereinafter, embodiments of the present disclosure will be described with reference to the drawings. In the following, the same or corresponding elements are denoted by the same reference numerals throughout the drawings, and duplicated descriptions thereof will be omitted. In addition, the drawings show each component diagrammatically for ease of understanding.
[0012] (Embodiment) Hereinafter, the embodiment will be described with reference to Figures 1 to 7. Note that the X direction, Y direction, and Z direction in the figures respectively indicate the width direction, thickness direction, and height direction of the display device 2.
[0013] [1-1. Configuration] FIG. 1 is a schematic perspective view showing an example of an electronic device 1 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0014] <Electronic equipment> 1, the electronic device 1 is a notebook personal computer (laptop PC). The electronic device 1 includes a display device 2 and a main body 3. Each of the display device 2 and the main body 3 has a thin box-shaped outer shell and is rectangular in plan view.
[0015] 1, the main body 3 has, for example, a keyboard 5 and a touchpad 6 that function as an input unit. The input unit is exposed from the main body 3. Inside the main body 3, a CPU, a memory, a storage, a battery, and the like are housed, which are not shown.
[0016] The display device 2 and the main body 3 are connected via a hinge unit 7. The hinge unit 7 rotatably connects the display device 2 and the main body 3. The hinge unit 7 rotates the display device 2 and / or the main body 3, and the electronic device 1 can be in an open state or a closed state. The "open state" refers to a state in which the display device 2 and the main body 3 are separated and the display module 11 and the input units 5 and 6 are exposed. The "closed state" refers to a state in which the display device 2 and the main body 3 are disposed opposite each other, the display module 11 and the input units 5 and 6 face each other, and the display module 11 and the input units 5 and 6 are not exposed.
[0017] <Display device> FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the display device 2 of the electronic device 1 shown in FIG. 1, as viewed from the rear side. FIG. 3 is a front view of the display device 2 shown in FIG. 2, as viewed from the front side. FIG. 4 is a diagram showing a state in which the rear case 30 is removed from the display device 2 shown in FIG. 2. FIG. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of a main part of the display device 2 shown in FIG. 4. FIG. 6 is an enlarged perspective view of other main parts of the display device 2 shown in FIG. 4. FIG. 7 is a schematic enlarged partial cross-sectional view of the display device 2 shown in FIG. 3, taken along line VII-VII.
[0018] As shown in FIGS. 2 to 4, the display device 2 has a display module 11 and a housing 10 that houses the display module 11. The housing 10 of the display device 2 has a front case 20 and a rear case 30. The housing 10 is made of various metal materials such as magnesium alloys or aluminum alloys, or resin materials. The front case 20 has a frame shape, and the rear case 30 has a substantially flat rectangular shape. The front case 20 has a front-side fitting portion (not shown) on its periphery. The rear case 30 has a rear-side fitting portion (not shown) on its periphery that fits into the front-side fitting portion.
[0019] The frame portion 21 of the front case 20 includes an upper frame portion 21a, a first frame portion 21b, an opposite frame portion 21c, and a lower frame portion 21d. The upper frame portion 21a and the lower frame portion 21d extend in the X direction. The first frame portion 21b and the opposite frame portion 21c extend in the Z direction.
[0020] A plurality of positioning ribs 23 are disposed near the rear corners of the frame portion 21 of the front case 20. That is, the first rib 23a and the second rib 23b are disposed on the upper frame portion 21a, and the third rib 23c and the fifth rib 23e are disposed on the other side frame portion 21c. The fourth rib 23d and the seventh rib 23g are disposed on the one side frame portion 21b, and the sixth rib 23f and the eighth rib 23h are disposed on the lower frame portion 21d. The first rib 23a, the second rib 23b, the sixth rib 23f, and the eighth rib 23h extend in the X direction. The third rib 23c, the fourth rib 23d, the fifth rib 23e, and the seventh rib 23g extend in the Z direction. Therefore, in the upper part of the frame 21, the first rib 23a and the third rib 23c located adjacent to each other are disposed near the first corner, and the second rib 23b and the fourth rib 23d located adjacent to each other are disposed near the second corner, and the fifth rib 23e and the sixth rib 23f located adjacent to each other are disposed near the third corner, and the seventh rib 23g and the eighth rib 23h located adjacent to each other are disposed near the fourth corner, and the seventh rib 23g and the eighth rib 23h located adjacent to each other are disposed near the fourth corner, and the rectangular display module 11 can be easily and accurately positioned with respect to the front case 20.
[0021] A spacer 35 is disposed between the positioning rib 23 and the display module 11. The spacer 35 has a structure in which a rib adhesive portion and a cushion portion are laminated. The rib adhesive portion has a function of adhering and supporting the cushion portion of the spacer 35 to the positioning rib 23, and is, for example, a double-sided tape. The cushion portion of the spacer 35 has cushioning properties so that it can softly abut against the side surface of the display module 11 and absorb shock during positioning. The cushion portion of the spacer 35 is made of urethane foam having a fine and uniform cell structure, for example, urethane foam (registered trademark PORON, product number TR-32) manufactured by Rogers Inoac Corporation. This reduces shock when positioning the display module 11 with respect to the positioning rib 23. The spacer 35 is preferably disposed to reduce shock during positioning, but is not an essential component of the present disclosure.
[0022] <Display module> The display module 11 of the display device 2 is, for example, a liquid crystal module having a liquid crystal panel and a backlight. A display area 13 of the display module 11 is exposed from a display opening 12 formed inside a frame portion 21 of a front case 20. In addition, built-in parts such as a camera 16 and an antenna 17 are built into the upper part of the display device 2.
[0023] The liquid crystal panel displays an image, and may be, for example, a transmissive liquid crystal panel, a semi-transmissive liquid crystal panel, or a reflective liquid crystal panel. The backlight is a light source for displaying an image on the liquid crystal panel. For example, an edge-light type light source may be used as the backlight. In the liquid crystal module, the liquid crystal panel and the backlight are, for example, integrated.
[0024] The liquid crystal panel has a structure in which a first glass substrate and a second glass substrate are overlapped facing each other. The overlapping portion of the first glass substrate and the second glass substrate has a liquid crystal layer, a polarizing plate, a color filter, etc., and is used as a display area 13. The second glass substrate has a size larger than the first glass substrate below. The liquid crystal panel has, for example, a mounting area 18 below the display area 13. In the mounting area 18, a semiconductor chip (driver IC) is directly mounted on the second glass substrate by, for example, COG (Chip On Glass) technology. This allows the liquid crystal panel to be made thinner and lighter, and improves reliability.
[0025] As described above, the liquid crystal panel has the display area 13 in which two glass substrates are overlapped, and the mounting area 18 in which one glass substrate is included. The display area 13 is located above the display module 11, and the mounting area 18 is located below the display area 13. The mounting area 18 and its neighboring area are so-called low-strength areas having a lower mechanical strength than the display area 13 because only the mechanical strength of the single glass substrate contributes to the mechanical strength of the display module 11. In contrast, the display area 13 in which two glass substrates are overlapped is a so-called high-strength area having a higher mechanical strength than the mounting area 18. Therefore, the elastic support member 40 is disposed in the peripheral portion of the display area 13, which is a so-called high-strength area.
[0026] The display module 11 is a rectangular plate. As shown in Fig. 5 and Fig. 6, the peripheral portion of the display module 11 includes an upper edge portion 11a located on the upper side, a side edge portion 11b perpendicular to the upper edge portion 11a, and an other side edge portion 11c facing the one side edge portion 11b. The peripheral portion of the display module 11 corresponds to the frame portion 21 of the front case 20. That is, the upper edge portion 11a corresponds to the upper frame portion 21a, the one side edge portion 11b corresponds to the one side frame portion 21b, the other side edge portion 11c corresponds to the other side frame portion 21c, and the lower edge portion corresponds to the lower frame portion 21d.
[0027] As shown in FIG. 4, a buffer member 37 is disposed between the rear side of the display module 11 and the rear case 30. The buffer member 37 has a rectangular shape extending in a plane in the X and Z directions. The buffer member 37 is located inside a plurality of elastic support members 40 disposed on the periphery of the display module 11, and is surrounded by a plurality of elastic support members 40 described later. The buffer member 37 is configured to be able to move freely in both the X and Z directions. The buffer member 37 has, for example, a plurality of through holes penetrating in the thickness direction (Y direction). The buffer member 37 has a smaller density and is harder than the elastic portion 40b of the elastic support member 40. The buffer member 37 is made of a polyolefin-based closed cell foam, for example, a cross-linked polyethylene foam (product name PE-Lite Z, product number HD-80) manufactured by Inoac Corporation. The buffer member 37 can reduce damage to the display module 11 if a foreign object (for example, a pen) is accidentally caught between the display device 2 and the main body 3 in the closed state.
[0028] <Elastic support member> As shown in FIG. 4, a plurality of elastic support members 40 are disposed between the rear side of the display module 11 and the front side of the rear case 30. When viewed from the thickness direction (Y direction) of the display module 11, the elastic support members 40 are disposed along the periphery of the display module 11. That is, the elastic support members 40 are disposed along the upper edge 11a, the one side edge 11b, and the other side edge 11c. Note that the expression "along the periphery of the display module 11" means that the elastic support members 40 do not necessarily have to be parallel to the periphery of the display module 11 as long as they are within a predetermined distance from the periphery of the display module 11. The "predetermined distance" can be determined appropriately according to the size of the display module 11, and is, for example, within 20 mm from the periphery of the display module 11.
[0029] The elastic support member 40 is disposed in a so-called high-strength region located on the periphery of the rear side of the display module 11. The high-strength region is located at the upper edge 11a, one side edge 11b, and the other side edge 11c of the display region 13 of the display module 11, and has a mechanical strength greater than that of the mounting region 18. This makes it possible to prevent the display module 11 from being damaged when the elastic support member 40 is disposed on the periphery of the display module 11. Furthermore, since the rigidity of the display module 11 is improved, the display module 11 can be protected from the impact of being dropped. Furthermore, since the torsional rigidity of the display module 11 is also improved, the display module 11 can be protected even if a torsional force acts on the display device 2.
[0030] 4 to 6, for example, a first elastic support member 41, a second elastic support member 42, and a third elastic support member 43 are arranged as the elastic support member 40 in the upper edge portion 11a. Macroscopically, the elastic support member 40 in the upper edge portion 11a extends in the X direction from the vicinity of the other side edge portion 11c to the vicinity of the one side edge portion 11b. However, microscopically, the first elastic support member 41 and the second elastic support member 42 are spaced apart in the X direction, and a blank area 14 is formed between the spaced apart first elastic support member 41 and second elastic support member 42. A cable for the camera 16 and a cable for the antenna 17 are arranged in the blank area 14.
[0031] A fifth elastic support member 45 is disposed as the elastic support member 40 at one side edge 11b. The fifth elastic support member 45 extends in the Z direction with its starting end near the upper edge 11a and its ending end near the mounting area 18. A fourth elastic support member 44 is disposed as the elastic support member 40 at the other side edge 11c. The fourth elastic support member 44 extends in the Z direction with its starting end near the upper edge 11a and its ending end near the mounting area 18.
[0032] The elastic support member 40 has a structure in which a front-side adhesive portion 40a, an elastic portion 40b having cushioning properties, and a rear-side adhesive portion 40c are laminated. The elastic portion 40b has cushioning properties. The front-side adhesive portion 40a and the rear-side adhesive portion 40c have adhesive properties and are made of, for example, double-sided tape. The front-side adhesive portion 40a is adhesively supported on the rear side of the display module 11 and is fixed, for example, by adhesion. The rear-side adhesive portion 40c is adhesively supported on the front side of the rear case 30 and is fixed, for example, by adhesion. This makes it possible to easily adhesively support the display module 11 to the rear case 30.
[0033] The double-sided tape used for the front-side adhesive portion 40a and the rear-side adhesive portion 40c may be, for example, one that is removably removable or one that has a tape width (for example, 20 mm or less) that is easy to remove. This makes it easy to remove the display module 11, enables on-site replacement, and improves the workability of replacement. The double-sided tape used for the front-side adhesive portion 40a and the rear-side adhesive portion 40c may be, for example, an acrylic or silicone-based tape. For example, VHB (registered trademark) tape 468 or Y-4625 manufactured by 3M, or 5000NS manufactured by Nitto Denko Corporation may be used as the double-sided tape.
[0034] The elastic portion 40b of the elastic support member 40 has a cushioning property so that the display module 11 can be elastically supported on the rear case 30. The elastic portion 40b is made of urethane foam having a fine and uniform cell structure, for example, urethane foam (registered trademark PORON, product number H-48) manufactured by Rogers Inoac Corporation. In order to harden the elastic portion 40b having the cushioning property, the elastic portion 40b is used in a compressed state. Therefore, the thickness of the elastic portion 40b is configured so that the elastic portion 40b is compressed in the thickness direction (Y direction) when the rear case 30 is attached to the front case 20 by fitting the front side fitting portion of the front case 20 with the rear side fitting portion of the rear case 30. This absorbs the variation in the internal space to improve the adhesiveness, and the elastic portion 40b having the cushioning property can have an appropriate hardness, so that the rigidity and torsional rigidity of the display module 11 elastically supported on the rear case 30 can be improved.
[0035] Furthermore, the thickness of the elastic support member 40 when assembled in the housing 10 is dimensioned to be thicker than the thickness of the cushioning member 37. This allows a space for the display module 11 to bend (a so-called bending margin) to be formed between the display module 11 and the cushioning member 37, so that damage to the display module 11 can be mitigated if a foreign object (e.g., a pen) is accidentally caught between the display device 2 and the main body 3 in the closed state.
[0036] [1-2. Assembly of the display device] In assembling the display device 2, first, the display module 11 is prepared in which the elastic support member 40 is arranged on the peripheral portion (high strength region) 11a, 11b, 11c of the display module 11 with the cushioning member 37 disposed on the rear side of the display module 11. With the front side adhesive portion 40a of the elastic support member 40 bonded, the display module 11 is positioned with respect to the positioning rib 23 of the front case 20. Then, with the rear side adhesive portion 40c of the elastic support member 40 made bondable, the rear case 30 is fitted into the front case 20 to mount the rear case 30 to the front case 20. At this time, the display module 11 is supported by adhesion to the rear case 30. Therefore, by mounting the rear case 30 to the front case 20 in which the display module 11 is positioned, the display device 2 in which the display module 11 is elastically supported by the rear case 30 can be assembled. As a result, when the display module 11 is assembled into the housing 10, accurate positioning using a jig is not required, improving workability.
[0037] [1-3. Effects] According to the electronic device 1 of the first embodiment, the following effects can be achieved.
[0038] The electronic device 1 includes a housing 10, a display module 11, a positioning rib 23, and an elastic support member 40. The housing 10 has a front case 20 and a rear case 30. The display module 11 is disposed between the front case 20 and the rear case 30. The positioning rib 23 is disposed on the front case 20 and is used to position the display module 11 on the front case 20. The elastic support member 40 is disposed between the rear side of the display module 11 and the front side of the rear case 30 and elastically supports the display module 11 with respect to the rear case 30. When viewed from the thickness direction of the display module 11, the elastic support member 40 is disposed along the peripheral portions 11a, 11b, and 11c of the display module 11.
[0039] With this configuration, the display module 11 is elastically supported by the elastic support member 40 with respect to the rear case 30, improving the rigidity and torsional rigidity of the display module 11. This improves the rigidity and torsional rigidity of the display module 11 built into the housing 10. Also, after the display module 11 is positioned in the front case 20 by the positioning rib 23 of the front case 20, the rear case 30 with the display module 11 elastically supported thereon is attached to the front case 20. This eliminates the need for accurate positioning using a jig when incorporating the display module 11 into the housing 10, improving workability.
[0040] The peripheral portion of the display module 11 includes an upper edge portion 11a located on the upper side, one side edge portion 11b perpendicular to the upper edge portion 11a, and another side edge portion 11c opposite the one side edge portion 11b, and the elastic support member 40 may be arranged along the upper edge portion 11a, the one side edge portion 11b and the other side edge portion 11c.
[0041] With this configuration, when the elastic support members 40 are disposed on the peripheral portions 11a, 11b, and 11c of the display module 11, damage to the display module 11 can be suppressed.
[0042] The elastic support member 40 includes a first elastic support member 41 and a second elastic support member 42, and the first elastic support member 41 and the second elastic support member 42 may be disposed at a distance from each other.
[0043] With this configuration, interference with the cables of the built-in parts 16 and 17 can be avoided.
[0044] The elastic support member 40 may support the display module 11 relative to the rear case 30 in a compressed state.
[0045] With this configuration, the elastic support member 40 having elasticity is supported by the rear case 30, so that the rigidity and torsional rigidity of the display module 11 elastically supported by the rear case 30 can be improved.
[0046] The elastic support member 40 may have a structure in which a front-side adhesive portion 40a that is adhered to the display module 11, an elastic portion 40b having cushioning properties, and a rear-side adhesive portion 40c that is adhered to the rear case 30 are laminated together.
[0047] With this configuration, the display module 11 can be elastically supported relative to the rear case 30.
[0048] The front side adhesive portion 40a and the rear side adhesive portion 40c may be double-sided tape.
[0049] With this configuration, the display module 11 can be easily supported by adhesion to the rear case 30.
[0050] The double-sided tape may be removably attached.
[0051] With this configuration, the display module 11 can be easily removed, and can be replaced on-site, improving the efficiency of the replacement work.
[0052] A buffer member 37 may be disposed between the display module 11 and the rear case 30.
[0053] With this configuration, even if a foreign object (for example, a pen) is accidentally caught between the display device 2 and the main body 3 in the closed state, damage to the display module 11 can be mitigated.
[0054] The elastic support member 40 may be configured so that the thickness of the elastic support member 40 when assembled into the housing 10 is greater than the thickness of the cushioning member 37 .
[0055] This configuration creates space (so-called flexure) for the display module 11 to flex, thereby reducing damage to the display module 11 if a foreign object (e.g., a pen) is accidentally pinched between the display device 2 and the main body 3 in the closed state.
[0056] A spacer 35 having cushioning properties may be disposed between the display module 11 and the positioning rib 23 .
[0057] With this configuration, the impact generated when positioning the display module 11 relative to the positioning ribs 23 is reduced.
[0058] The display module 11 has a rectangular shape and is provided with a plurality of positioning ribs 23, and two adjacent positioning ribs among the plurality of positioning ribs 23 may be arranged perpendicular to each other near the corners of the frame portion of the front case 20.
[0059] With this configuration, the rectangular display module 11 can be positioned relative to the front case 20 easily and accurately.
[0060] The display module 11 may include a liquid crystal panel having a display area 13 formed by overlapping two glass substrates, and a mounting area 18 formed by a single glass substrate and having a driver IC mounted thereon.
[0061] Such a configuration allows the liquid crystal panel to be made thinner and lighter, and improves reliability.
