AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing display devices with multiple chip driver ICs are limited in their ability to perform detailed local dimming control due to the number of LED divisions that can be handled by a single-chip driver IC, especially when the display panel size is large.

Method used

The display device incorporates a first and second source driver to calculate feature amounts of image data signals for respective sub-areas, generating dimming data that are combined and supplied to an illumination driving unit to control backlight luminance, allowing detailed local dimming control without correcting image data.

Benefits of technology

Enables detailed local dimming control for a larger number of LED divisions by utilizing multiple chip driver ICs, improving the control precision and contrast ratio of the display.

Abstract

To provide a display device capable of performing detailed control of simple local dimming without correction of image data, in the display device having driver ICs of a plurality of chips.SOLUTION: A first source driver calculates, on the basis of an image data signal, a feature amount of the image data signal corresponding to each of sub-areas of a first group included in a plurality of sub-areas obtained by dividing a display panel, and generates first dimming data indicating a light amount of backlight corresponding to the feature amount. A second source driver calculates, on the basis of the image data signal, a feature amount of the image data signal corresponding to each of sub-areas of a second group included in the plurality of sub-areas, and generates second dimming data indicating a light amount of backlight corresponding to the feature amount. The first source driver acquires the second dimming data from the second source driver, and sequentially supplies the first dimming data and the second dimming data to an illumination driver.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
