Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a composition comprising at least one silane-functional amine, and a method for preparing at least one silane-functional amine. The present disclosure further relates to a rubber composition comprising a composition comprising at least one silane-functional amine, at least one diene-based polymer, silica, at least one processing aid, and a vulcanization package, and a process for preparing the rubber composition. [Background technology]

[0002] Tire treads have historically been compounded with carbon black and natural rubber due to their good wear and tear properties. One drawback of using carbon black and natural rubber is that the resulting rubber tread compositions have high hysteresis (i.e., high rolling resistance), which negatively impacts fuel efficiency. Regulatory factors such as Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) regulations, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, and European tire label regulations have placed an increased emphasis on energy conservation. As a result, tire manufacturers are increasingly focused on producing tires with low rolling resistance while maintaining good wear and tear properties.

[0003] One approach to improve rolling resistance (reducing hysteresis) is the use of sulfur-containing silane and silica fillers, which works very well in tires made from synthetic rubber. However, the use of standard sulfur-containing silanes in natural rubber and silica formulations results in reduced wear and tear compared to carbon black and natural rubber formulations. It has been a long-standing goal of the tire industry to produce a natural rubber-based tread compound that has excellent wear / tear properties similar to carbon black and natural rubber formulations, and low rolling resistance similar to sulfur-containing silanes with natural rubber and silica formulations.

[0004] A need exists to produce natural rubber tread compounds that have both excellent wear / tear and low hysteresis properties. Summary of the Invention

[0304] Table 1 lists the test procedures for evaluating the vulcanized (cured) rubber compositions. [Table 1]

[0305] The rubber processing tester is abbreviated as RPA. Example 1 Preparation of Composition A

[0306] Chloropropyltriethoxysilane (133.6 grams, 0.56 moles), o-phenylenediamine (60.0 grams, 0.56 moles), and xylene (100.0 grams) were charged to a 1 liter round bottom flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, addition funnel, 6 inch Vigreux column, short path distillation head, heating mantle, and temperature controller. Sodium ethoxide (21 wt% in ethanol, 170.8 grams, 0.53 moles) was charged to the addition funnel. The reaction mixture in the flask was heated and stirred at 160°C for 2 hours, after which the sodium ethoxide was added through the addition funnel. The sodium ethoxide was added slowly over a period of 7-8 hours while maintaining the reaction temperature at 160°C. After the addition of sodium ethoxide was completed, the temperature in the vessel was gradually reduced.

[0307] The solids obtained from the reaction mixture were removed by centrifugation. The organic component was washed three times with 30% ethylenediamine / ethylenediamine hydrochloride solution to remove unreacted o-phenylenediamine. After washing, the organic component was stripped under vacuum to remove the solvent and low boiling washing reagents, and 122 grams of Composition A was recovered. Example 2 Preparation of Composition A

[0308] A predetermined amount of o-phenylenediamine (220.4 grams, 2.04 moles) and xylene isomer mixture (406.4 grams) were charged into the reaction vessel. The reaction vessel was a 5 liter round bottom flask supported by a heating mantle powered by a temperature controller. The flask was equipped with a 15 cm Vigreux column fitted with a mechanical stirrer, an addition funnel, and a controlled distillation head offtake. A mixture of chloropropyltriethoxysilane (492.7 grams, 2.05 moles) and hexadecane (42.3 grams) was then added into the flask. The reaction mixture was kept under a dry nitrogen atmosphere with stirring. The reaction mixture was heated to 160° C. and held for 67 minutes before adding sodium ethoxide through the addition funnel. Sodium ethoxide (21% by weight in ethanol, 616.0 grams, 1.90 moles) was then added at a constant rate over 6 hours through the addition funnel.

[0309] The reaction mixture was then cooled to room temperature and the liquid layer was decanted from the solids. The solids were then rinsed with toluene. The combined organic layers were vacuum stripped at 0.1 torr to produce a deep purple liquid which was placed in a -20°C freezer for ~2 days. Additional solids formed and the organic layer was again decanted away from the solids. This organic layer was further vacuum stripped at 0.1 torr at elevated temperature to leave Composition A as a clear deep purple liquid. Example 3 Preparation of Composition B

[0310] Chloropropyltriethoxysilane (0.25 moles), chlorobutyldimethylethoxysilane (0.28 moles), o-phenylenediamine (0.50 moles), and xylene (100.0 grams) were charged to a 1 liter round bottom flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, addition funnel, 6 inch Vigreux column, short path distillation head, heating mantle, and temperature controller. Sodium ethoxide (170.8 grams, 21% in ethanol, 0.53 moles) was charged to the addition funnel. The reaction mixture in the flask was heated and stirred at 160°C for 2 hours, after which the sodium ethoxide was added. The sodium ethoxide was added slowly over a period of 7-8 hours while maintaining the reaction temperature at 160°C. The temperature in the vessel was then gradually reduced.

[0311] The solids obtained from the reaction mixture were removed by centrifugation. The organic component was washed three times with 30% ethylenediamine / ethylenediamine hydrochloride solution to remove unreacted o-phenylenediamine. After washing, the organic component was stripped under vacuum to remove the solvent and low boiling washing reagents, and composition B was recovered. Example 4 Preparation of Composition B

[0312] Chloropropyltriethoxysilane (0.25 moles), o-phenylenediamine (0.50 moles), and xylene (100.0 grams) were charged to a 1 liter round bottom flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, addition funnel, 6 inch Vigreux column, short path distillation head, heating mantle, and temperature controller. The reaction mixture in the flask was heated and stirred at 160°C for 2 hours. Chlorobutyldimethylethoxysilane (0.28 moles) was then added to the flask. The reaction mixture in the flask was allowed to continue reacting for 2 hours. Sodium ethoxide (170.8 grams, 21% in ethanol, 0.53 moles) was then added slowly over a period of 7-8 hours while maintaining the reaction temperature at 160°C. The temperature in the vessel was gradually reduced.

[0313] The solids obtained from the reaction mixture were removed by centrifugation. The organic component was washed three times with 30% ethylenediamine / ethylenediamine hydrochloride solution to remove unreacted o-phenylenediamine. After washing, the organic component was stripped under vacuum to remove the solvent and low boiling washing reagents, and composition B was recovered. Comparative Example Preparation and Evaluation of Rubber Compositions

[0314] Table 2 shows the results of the Vulcan 80 / 20 blend of natural rubber and cis-1,4-polybutadiene. 登録商標 9 carbon black (control), and the ingredients used in rubber compositions prepared containing silanes bonded to silica using TESPT and Composition A. Composition A is a silane of the present invention. [Table 2]

[0315] The silica-containing formulation required slightly more N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazole sulfenamide (CBS) due to the tendency of silica to adsorb accelerators onto its surface. The three formulations were mixed in an internal rubber compounder using a mixing procedure with two consecutive non-productive mix steps followed by a final productive mix. The silica formulation with TESPT was heat treated at 145°C for 150 seconds during two non-productive passes (to drive the necessary silanization reaction). The silica formulation with Composition A was heat treated at 155°C for 90 seconds during two non-productive passes.

[0316] The three formulations were mixed with the curatives in the final production mix for 180 seconds at 105° C. These rubber compositions were cured at 160° C. for 15 minutes.

[0317] Table 3 lists the physical and dynamic properties obtained for the three rubber compositions. [Table 3]

[0318] The Shore A hardness for the rubber composition containing Composition A is lower than the Shore A hardness of both the carbon black rubber composition and the TESPT rubber composition.

[0319] The high Mooney viscosity observed for the rubber compositions containing Composition A is likely due to crosslinking of the silane with the polymer(s) via a Diels-Alder mechanism or directly with the polymer during the free radical initiated mixing process.

[0320] The scorch safety and cure behavior of the rubber composition containing composition A is comparable to the TESPT rubber composition. The higher minimum torque observed for the rubber composition containing composition A is due to the higher viscosity of the green compound. Delta torque is generally related to the degree of sulfur crosslinking; thus, it is believed that the rubber composition containing composition A has a lower degree of crosslinking compared to the carbon black and TESPT rubber compositions. This scenario is also supported by the possibility of pre-crosslinking of the polymer by the silane during the mixing process.

[0321] The rubber composition containing Composition A has a higher stiffness (reinforcement index) than both the carbon black and TESPT rubber compositions. This increased reinforcement is a good indicator of improved friction and wear resistance.

[0322] The slightly lower tensile strength and elongation for the rubber composition containing composition A can be attributed to the shorter and slightly stronger C-N bonds present in the matrix. The three batches have similar high speed tear energies, which is an indication of cut and chip resistance in natural rubber tire compounds.

[0323] The rubber composition containing Composition A provides excellent abrasion resistance to the silica compound as measured using a DIN abrasion tester.

[0324] The Payne effect, a measure of the degree of filler-filler interaction, is significantly lower for the rubber composition containing composition A. This may also be due to the pre-crosslinking between the silane and the polymer during the mixing process, which minimizes the opportunity for the filler aggregates to re-agglomerate. Tire rolling resistance is related to the tire deformation at frequencies between 10-100 Hz and temperatures between 50-70°C, and is proportional to tan δ, which is the ratio of the viscous modulus to the elastic modulus under cyclic deformation. Table 3 shows that the rubber composition containing composition A has a much smaller tan δ value than the carbon black rubber composition and the TESPT rubber composition. Thus, it is believed that the rubber composition containing composition A can minimize the trade-off between wear resistance and rolling resistance in natural rubber tire compounds.
