Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to a clear hair styling formulation. In particular, the present invention relates to a clear hair styling formulation comprising a dermatologically acceptable vehicle and a hair fixative polymer, the hair fixative polymer being a hydrolyzed starch, the hydrolyzed starch having a weight average molecular weight of from 5,000 to 50,000 daltons.
[0002] Clear hair styling formulations are popular with consumers because they perceive the clarity of the formulation as an indication of purity and quality in hair care products. However, clarity alone is not enough. Other properties such as curl strength or hold and humidity resistance are very important for hair styling products.
[0003] Conventional hair styling formulations contain synthetic polymers to provide style to hair. Synthetic polymers are typically based on vinyl monomers such as polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) or n-vinylpyrrolidone (VP). Although such polymers provide good hold while remaining water soluble enough to be easily washed off from hair, they provide a perception of an unfavorable sustainability profile. Therefore, it would be desirable to provide alternative polymers for providing style to hair that provide a more favorable sustainability profile. However, many natural polymers are not compatible with synthetic fixative polymers when blended into hair styling formulations, resulting in a cloudy formulation and / or forming an inhomogeneous film on hair, which inhomogeneity results in poor performance in humidity resistance.
[0004] In U.S. Patent No. 7,972,589, Leighton et al. disclose a hair fixative film having a blend of natural and synthetic polymers. In particular, Leighton et al. disclose a hair fixative film comprising: (a) at least one hair fixative polymer comprising a mixture of synthetic and natural polymers, the ratio of synthetic polymer to natural polymer being about 20:80 to about 75:25, the synthetic polymer being selected from the group consisting of acrylate copolymers, polyurethanes, polystyrenes, polyvinylamides, polyvinyl esters, acrylate / octylacrylamide copolymers, and mixtures thereof; and (b) a plasticizer, the hair fixative film being an unsupported film, having a thickness of about 1 to about 500 microns, providing hair stiffness of about 0.004 Joules to about 0.030 Joules when applied to hair, dissolving when exposed to water, and having a high humidity curl retention of greater than 30 percent after 2 hours.
[0005] Nonetheless, there is a continuing need for new clear hair styling formulations, particularly those containing compatible blends of natural hair fixative polymers and traditional synthetic polymers that are clear and provide effective curl strength or hold and humidity resistance.
[0006] The present invention provides a clear hair styling formulation comprising a dermatologically acceptable vehicle and a hair fixative polymer, the hair fixative polymer being hydrolyzed starch, the hydrolyzed starch having a weight average molecular weight of from 5,000 to 50,000 daltons.
[0007] The present invention provides a clear hair styling formulation comprising a dermatologically acceptable vehicle, a hair fixative polymer, the hair fixative polymer being hydrolyzed starch, the hydrolyzed starch having a weight average molecular weight of from 5,000 to 50,000 daltons, and a thickener.
[0008] The present invention provides a clear hair styling formulation comprising a dermatologically acceptable vehicle, a hair fixative polymer, the hair fixative polymer being a hydrolyzed starch, the hydrolyzed starch having a weight average molecular weight of from 5,000 to 50,000 Daltons, and a thickener, the thickener comprising a crosslinked homopolymer polymerized from (meth)acrylic acid.
[0009] The present invention provides a method of styling hair comprising providing a clear hair styling formulation of the present invention, applying the clear hair styling formulation to the hair, and imparting a style to the hair. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0011] Unless otherwise indicated, ratios, percentages, parts, etc. are by weight.
[0012] As used herein, unless otherwise indicated, "molecular weight" or MW The phrase refers to weight average molecular weight as measured in a conventional manner using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and conventional standards such as pullulan narrow molecular weight standards in the molecular weight range of 180 to 708,000 Daltons. GPC techniques are discussed in detail in Modern Size-Exclusion Liquid Chromatography-Practice of Gel Permeation and Gel Filtration Chromatography, Second Edition, AM Striegel, WW Yau, JJ Kirkland, DDBly; John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 2009. Molecular weights are reported herein in units of Daltons, or equivalently, in g / mol.

In each of Comparative Examples C1-C4 and Examples 1-7, deionized water (50 g) was weighed into a 400 mL beaker equipped with a stir bar. The beaker was placed on a magnetic stirrer and set to stir at 500 rpm. Carbomer (Carbopol 980 from Lubrizol) (1 g) was then added to the contents of the beaker and stirring continued until dispersed, at which point the stirrer setting was reduced to 200 rpm to remove any air bubbles.
[0045] Deionized water (39.9 g) was weighed into a 150 mL flask equipped with a stir bar. The flask was then placed on a magnetic stirrer and set to stir. Disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (0.1 g) was added to the flask contents. Once the disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate had dissolved, glycerin (3 g) was added to the flask contents. A hair fixative polymer (5 g) as shown in Table 5 was then added to the flask contents. Once the solution in the flask was clear, preservative (Euxyl PE 9010 from Ashland) (1 g) was added to the flask contents.
[0046] The contents of the flask were slowly added to the contents of the beaker over a period of 2 minutes with continued stirring, and the contents of the beaker were pH adjusted to 7-7.5 by the addition of triethanolamine to provide the product hair gel formulation. [Table 5]
[0047] High humidity curl retention Hair tresses (medium to dark brown virgin hair obtained from International Hair Importers) with an average length of 8 inches (before curling) and weighing 3.5 g were used for the curl retention experiments. The tresses were washed using a 9% sodium lauryl sulfate SLS solution and dried overnight in a temperature controlled room. The tresses were then treated with a hair gel formulation (0.35 g) according to one of Comparative Examples C1-C4 and Examples 1-7, before being wet curled on 22 mm x 70 mm curlers and pinned in place. After drying, the curlers were gently removed from the tresses and the curls were hung by clips in a humidity chamber at 25°C and 90% relative humidity. The initial curl length was recorded. The length of the curled tresses was then recorded after 8 hours. Curl retention is defined as [(L(0)-L(t)) / (L(0)-L(i))]×100%, where L(0) is the fully extended tress length, L(i) is the initial curl length, and L(t) is the curl length after 8 hours. Higher values of curl retention correspond to better humidity performance. The curl retention observed for the hair gel formulations is reported in Table 6. [Table 6]
