An elongated access port has a needle-impenetrable housing enclosing a fluid reservoir. The housing includes a base having a floor with an upstanding encircling sidewall and a cap having a top wall with a depending encircling skirt. The skirt of the cap receives the sidewall of the base. An access aperture extends through the top wall of the cap to communicate with the fluid reservoir. The access aperture is encircled by a continuous rim having an elongated shape in the plane of the access aperture. The rim of the access aperture may be elliptical, oval, polygonal, or parabolic-ended. An elastomeric, needle-penetrable, generally planar septum is disposed in the access aperture with the periphery of the septum in sealing engagement with the rim of the access aperture. Prior to installation, the septum has a periphery with a cross section in the plane of the septum that is geometrically proportional to and larger than the shape of the access aperture. Installation causes the periphery of the septum to be displaced inwardly by the rim of the access aperture in a direction parallel to the plane of the septum. In view of the relative shapes of the rim of the access aperture and the periphery of the septum, this produces substantially uniform hydrostatic pressure in regions of the installed septum that are subjected in use of the access port to needle penetrations. Opposite faces of the periphery of the septum are urged toward each other between the cap of the housing and the top of the sidewall of the base of the housing.

A safety needle device and positive flush mechanism for use with a vascular access port. In one embodiment, the combination needle assembly includes a needle, a body and a base, the body being collapsible to expunge fluid therefrom as the needle is withdrawn from a vascular access port. In another embodiment, the combination needle assembly includes a needle, a housing and a reservoir, the housing squeezing the reservoir to expunge fluid therefrom as the needle is withdrawn from the port. In another embodiment, the needle assembly includes a compression plate and balloon extension, the compression plate forcing fluid out of the balloon extension as the needle is withdrawn from the port. In all embodiments, the needle assembly is configured to provide a positive flush to overcome negative pressures in the vascular access port, while also providing a locking mechanism to prevent accidental needle sticks.

An injectable substance delivery device comprising a pen device body, a cartridge, a plunger, a drive mechanism, and at least one of a lock-out mechanism and a rate-limiting mechanism. The lock-out mechanism is provided through a ratchet engagement between the body and the plunger to restrict plunger movement and to ensure that the required needle puncture depth is realized prior to injection by locking out the injection mechanism from advancing until a specified force is applied to the skin. A rate-limiting mechanism is also provided through a user compressed plunger drive spring to ensure that a specific rate of injection is realized during the injection of a medicament.

The invention is a transvaginal ultrasound probe having an attached echogenic needle that is useful in the treatment of uterine fibroids. The echogenic needle has an echogenic surface near its tip that allows the physician to visualize its location using ultrasound imaging. In one embodiment, the needle has an active electrode at its distal end. The active electrode supplies radio frequency energy to a fibroids causing necrosis of the targeted fibroid or by destroying the fibroid's vascular supply. A safety needle device for protecting a user against inadvertent needle-stick injury. This needle device includes a needle housing having a distal housing opening. An arcuate groove extends within the needle housing terminating adjacent the distal housing opening. A needle is disposed within the arcuate groove having a distal needle portion extending away from the needle housing through the distal housing opening. An elongate sheath assembly surrounds the needle within the groove. A biasing member is disposed within the needle housing and is configured to move the sheath assembly throughout the length of the arcuate groove and through the distal housing opening. The sheath assembly then completely enclose the distal needle portion.

An endoscopic suturing system and method are disclosed as are devices for use with the system and method such as a suture dispenser, a cinch device, and a tissue grasper. In one embodiment the suturing system includes a cap assembly arranged at the distal end portion of an endoscope or guide member, with the cap assembly including a rotatable needle holder. The present invention circular ablation system CAS includes a multiplicity of expandable needles that can be expanded around a central axis and positioned to inject a fluid like ethanol to ablate conductive tissue in a ring around the ostium of a pulmonary vein quickly and without the need for expensive capital equipment. The expansion of the needles is accomplished by self-expanding or balloon expandable structures. The invention includes centering means so that the needles will be situated in a pattern surrounding the outside of the ostium of a vein. Also included are members that limit the distance of penetration of the needles into the wall of the left atrium. The present invention also has application to ablating tissue around the ostium of a renal artery for the treatment of hypertension.

A prosthetic implantable device that offers a reduction in fluid loss when the device is punctured, such as by a dialysis needle or suture needle, and the needle is subsequently removed. The device may be made to be thin and flexible, and with longitudinal stretch, in order that it also offers good handling and kink resistance to a surgeon. While the device is preferably of tubular form, flat sheets or other forms may also be made. The device includes inner and outer layers of a porous material having a microstructure of nodes interconnected by bent fibrils, and having void spaces between adjacent bent fibrils. The inner and outer layers are joined by an elastomeric adhesive that may interpenetrate the void spaces of the adjacent surfaces of the inner and outer layers, that is, the inner surface of the outer layer and the outer surface of the inner layer. Optionally, a middle layer of an elastomeric material may also be provided, joined to the inner and outer porous layers by the interpenetrating elastomeric adhesive. A medical anesthetic needle (1) is provided that includes an inner needle (3) of a straight needle shape, having a pencil-pointed tip (4), and an outer needle (2) of a straight tubular shape, having the inner needle inserted thereinto and therethrough from the rear end thereof. A foremost-end part (12) of a hollow, truncated conical shape or the like of the outer needle (2) is formed so that the minimum inner diameter thereof is smaller than the outer diameter of the main body (5) of the inner needle (3). The present invention relates to a catheter insertion apparatus with a needle protective system to protect a user from an inadvertent needle stick. One aspect of the invention provides for withdrawing a contaminated needle into a protected mode within the handle of the catheter apparatus. A container is provided for storing a product, such as a fat containing liquid product, and includes a body defining a chamber for receiving the product; and a container closure including a sealing portion for sealing the product within the chamber. The container closure includes a member forming a substantially fluid-tight seal between the container closure and the body; a nipple in fluid communication with the chamber that seals the chamber with respect to the ambient atmosphere during storage of the product in the chamber and that can be opened to dispense product from the chamber therethrough; and a needle penetrable and laser resealable portion that is penetrable by the needle for aseptically filling the chamber with the product, and that is thermally resealable by the application of laser radiation thereto to seal the product within the chamber.

A system for converting an off-the-shelf syringe into a safety syringe for preventing accidental needle stick or infection. The preferred embodiment of the present invention is configured to mount to an off-the-shelf syringe via threaded, snap, permanent, or other engagement to the cannula hub of the syringe, wherein the device may include the needle for mounting to the syringe, or via barrel rings configured to mount about the barrel of the syringe. Described herein are systems, apparatus, and methods for precise placement and guidance of tools during surgery, particularly spinal surgery, using minimally invasive surgical techniques. Several minimally invasive approaches to spinal surgeries were conceived, percutaneous technique being one of them. This procedures looks to establish a skin opening as small as possible by accessing inner organs via needle-puncture of the skin. The percutaneous technique is used in conjunction with a robotic surgical system to further enhance advantages of manual percutaneous techniques by improving precision, usability and/or shortening surgery time by removal of redundant steps.

The present invention is directed to a shieldable blood collection set and a needle assembly for use therewith. The needle assembly includes a needle cannula having a puncture tip at a distal end, a hub which supports the needle cannula, and a shield. The hub and the shield are axially movable with respect to each other between a first sampling position, where the puncture tip is exposed from the shield, and a second shielded position where the shield covers the puncture tip. A gauze pad is connected to the shield through a tether. After a venipuncture procedure, the gauze is maintained over the needle puncture tip at the puncture site, and the needle is withdrawn from the patient by pulling on the hub. This movement causes the tether to tightly extend between the gauze and the shield, which causes the needle puncture tip to be withdrawn into the shield.

An endovascular sheath device for use with a thermal treatment apparatus is provided. The device includes a longitudinal tube which is designed to receive a thermal treatment device and is designed to be inserted into a blood vessel. An ultrasonically visible reinforcement element is disposed along the length of the longitudinal tube. The reinforcement element such as a braided wire provides several functions including increased visibility under ultrasound, clearer identification of sheath tip, and increased durability to protect the fiber from needle punctures during tumescent injections into the perivenous space. The wire reinforcement also increases shaft torquability and kink resistance during sheath insertion and withdrawal.

This invention of a prepacked automatic retractable safety syringe comprises a needle hub with a needle tube and a rubber washer, a cap, a barrel, a spring, a vial, and a retractable plunger. To prevent or reduce injuries of needle stab and protect medical staffs, a forward action of the vial plus the needle hub compressed by the retractable plunger can drive a sliding movement between slides on the needle hub and snap hooks on the barrel via the spring's force to complete automatic retraction of the needle hub as well as the vial when an injection is finished.

Needle guards are disclosed for use with needle assemblies comprising a needle hub that joins a flexible trailing tube to a medical needle, the normally open front ends of the guards being closeable after a needle and hub have been pulled therein by the trailing tube. In one example (FIG. 4c), a guard (10) has a stiff upper sidewall (24a) of an inverted U-shape and a flexible lower sidewall (26b) that fits inside the upper sidewall and is resiliently biased to bring its front end (31) into contact with the front end (30) of upper sidewall (24b) so as to close the front aperture of the guard after the needle assembly (16) has been withdrawn into the guard. The lower sidewall (26b) can be locked or clipped into the upper sidewall (24b) by pressing lower sidewall passed catches (72). In this way, the needle is completely and safely enclosed after use to reduce the danger of needle-stick injury and blood-splash contamination.
